How To Create Mirrored Disks?

I have 2x 1tb hdd's, both connected to my computer via sata (well, one via sata the other via esata). One has data on it already and i'd like to make the second one mirror the first. Unfortunately, i'm not sure how to do this. I right click on the second disk but "new mirrored volume. " Is grayed out. I convert it to a dynamic disk and it's still grayed out. Do i need to make the first disk a dynamic volume as well? Will doing this or making it have a mirror erase my data?

Mirrored Hard Drives Gone

On windows 7, running 2 1. 5tb sata hard drives. While burning a cd the system reboots. On restart no boot disk found. Using windows cd startup repair nothing happens for over 2 hours. I used my external hd with xp pro on it to start up system. After its running plugged in sata drives and they did not show up. I was using mirrored drives to keep my files safe. I do not know what to do next. Any tips or help would be wonderful.

Driver For Hard Disks

Background: i've had a working windows 7 os for several months. Last week, it started running real slow and it kept attempting to install one or more windows updates upon start up, failing and then reverting changes. After finally logging in, i made several attempts with windows updates to install critical updates, with failure on each attempt as well as individually. I even disabled norton 360 and tried again, no luck. I decided to back up personal files and re-install windows 7. Following directions for re-installation, i received an error message indicating installation failed.

Problem: with the original windows 7 disk in the drive, the computer starts up with only two options, launch start up repair or start windows normally. Start windows normally just restarts the computer again, i can no longer get into to windows. When i choose the first option, i get to the system recovery options screen. There is an option button for use recovery tool to repair an operating system. However, no os is listed. When i click on the load drivers button to install drivers for my hard disks, i'm prompted to select a file to open.

Question: what is the location and name of the file (driver) am i supposed to open? The default location that it opens on is system 32.

Issue Copying Files Between Hard Disks

I am experiencing issues copying files between hard drives on my computer. I've been having this problem on windows 7, and windows vista, but have never encountered it on xp. It seems there are several similar threads, but i think i've noticed a few quirks in my own experience. I have several drives, between 500 gb ~ 1 tb. Problems arise when i try to copy a folder with a large number of files (typically pictures, folders around 4gb in size).initially, the transfer rate would be at the hd's burst speed, somewhere between 90mb to 150mb.

Speed would decrease to around 30mb, or even lower. The transfer eventually becomes so slow that the operation would take hours to finish. If i try to cancel, it would take minutes to do so. The computer would perform sluggishly for a long period afterward, with intermittent lag until i reboot the system. This occurs regardless of the source and destination drives. On certain samsung drives, this problem actually lead to data corruption on both the source and destination drives, and i/o error messages. Chkdsk will run at startup, attempt to fix the problem, but the data would be lost or the drive unreadable. I've since tossed the samsung drives for wd, have not had i/o errors, but the file copying problem persists. I've also disabled chkdsk at startup for all drives. My hardware drivers and bios are up to date.computer is free of viruses and malware.

I have no other troubles with windows 7. Curiously, if i compress my folders/files to a single rar file, i do not have problems copying them (transfer rate stays steady at 30~50mb). This leads me to believe that this is not a hardware issue, but a problem with explorer, and that it pertains specifically with the number of files being transferred rather than size. (But unpacking those files also lead to poor performance sometimes. )Is this a known issue that will be fixed?  I really like win7, but because i work with large number of files and numerous backups all the time, stability during file copying is a must. I may have to revert to xp, or use another os entirely.

Copy Os To New Hard Drive Without Physical Disks

My hard drive on my laptop recently crapped out 100%. I purchased a new hard drive, but now need to install the os. My wife's computer has windows 7 on it and i was wondering if it was possible and legal to copy her os to my new hard drive. If it is ok, how do i go about doing this when there were no physical disks sent with the laptop. All restores are done from the computer as is done with most newer laptops. Maybe i sounds stupid, but. Well, maybe i am. Please help?

Data Copying Fails, Usb Disks Keep Getting Restarted

We bought a new hp probook 4520s with windows 7 professional. From the very beginning we have been experiencing problems with usb devices. Our usb flash disks and an external westerndigital usb device (harddisk) often get restarted in windows 7, and errors reported on them, although all of them work properly on any windows xp system (computer) we try.copying to and from those disks often is interrupted and fails. An usb modem has not always functioned, either.

We reinstalled windows 7 - it did not help. The seller checked the hardware and found no problems. They say their usb devices work fine with this computer. In fact, sometimes it seems that our usb devices also work fine with it - however, this does not last long. Usb disks usually get restarted when data copying is just underway. Viruses, malware, etc, have been checked - nothing found. Autorun files turned into txt files - it has not helped, either.

Dvd Drive Wont Read Disks - Error Please Insert Disk

I recently upgraded to windows 7. The drive worked fine as i used it to install the os. On start up windows wouldn't recognize the drive. Finding that this was a common problem on dual boot win7 x64 i tried the 3 standard fixes (f8 on start up, change letter of drive, upper and lower field reg edit) i briefly had the drive working but after about 10 minutes (while i was using the drive) it crashed and disappeared.

I went to the manufacturers site and downloaded the latest software for it, windows installed this and said it was working fine, i can now see the drive but it wont read anything, every time i put a disk in (any disk) it tells me the drive is empty when it isn't and spits it out. I have tried the windows troubleshoot program from the support site, it detects a problem but cant fix it.

The device manager shows the drive as installed and working. The lens shouldn't need cleaning as the drive is less than a month old. Please help, i've run out of ideas.system - dual boot xp / win 7 x64, xp on samsung 1tb hdd win 7 on maxtor 200gb hdd, 4gb ram, intel core 2 duo 3ghz, asus p5g43m motherboard, nvidia 8500gt gpu

Cannot Create New User

In windows 7 home premium, my only account is an administrator account. I want to make a new standard account but i can't. When i open control panel > user accounts > manage another account, i see an empty box under the heading "choose the account you would like to change" i know from looking at help articles that my user icon should appear in this box, but it doesn't.

Furthermore, when i click "create a new account", type a new account name, select "standard" and click "create account", nothing happens. No new user account gets created, and there's still nothing in the box. My computer is a lenovo 3000 h210, with lots of ram (4 gb) and a pentium 2. 5 ghz dual-core processor. I've had it less than three months. It shipped with vista, but  i installed windows 7 (32-bit) from scratch.

Cannot Create Folders

I am running windows 7 on a brand new lenovo lap top. It is a new environment all around. I found one glitch in the windows explorer application. I created a sub-directory in the documents library and named it michigan. The whole path is c:usersmikemcbdocumentscustomersmichigan. I have done the same for folder for indiana, illinois, and kentucky etc. Etc. With no issues. But the one i created and named michigan (not the first one i created either) i cannot add sub-directories to it, or when i try to copy and paste a sub-directory, the files go in but not the directory.

Across the top of the all the other directories there is an option for "new folder" but not in the one i named michigan. I don’t want to delete and rename the file as i have a spreadsheet that has many hyperlinks pointing to many word documents in the michigan folder. I can do all of this with success from the command line (dos prompt) but when i go back to windows explorer, the new directories/files do not appear there. Have you seen this before? Is there a fix?

Unable To Create Directory

Whenever i launched ie web browsers(yahoo, google or msn), a message window (1-1/2"h x 2-1/2"w) with a message "unable to create directory" popping up first in the center of screen (i have to close this window first to open up browser) and then ie browser home page will be opening. This is very annoying and i do not know what caused this and how to correct it.

It started happening after i created a limited user account and try to launching ie in the limited user account. No problem in the admin user account and if i change the limited user account to administrator.

My pc is dell inspiron 9300 and windows xp professional and ie 8 are installed, plenty of hd space and 1gb ram. I have this pc for 4 years and i never have this sort of problem before.

Create A Homegroup Issue

Having a minor issue with the homegroup setup. Our main computer died (flood) and was replaced with this one that was a spare. The problem is: the computer is trying to connect to a homegroup that does not exist anymore. I have tried to "leave the homegroup" & that worked, but the only option it gives me is to "join a homegroup" not create one.

Is there anyway to let all the computers in the house know the old homegroup is no more, and allow me to create a new homegroup using the new computer?

Create A Dual 7/xp Boot

Is there a way to create a dual 7/xp boot? I have a dell xp system with a relative small and relative full hard drive. I'll probably have to upgrade to a new pc with win 7 in the near future. I have a number of programs that have upgrades upon upgrades (mostly downloaded) and i'm seeing a ton of work in my future. So i've seen some virtualization possibilities (e.g. Zinstall xp7) but is there a way to create a dual 7/xp boot by just installing - as a second drive - my existing drive into a win 7 machine. Don't know if it matters but there is a hidden small partition on that drive as well as the main c partition by the way, in case it's not obvious, i'm definitely not a hardware person.

Create A Macro In Ie8

Is there a way to create a macro in ie8? I use ie8 in a windows xp environment. I have multiple email logon id/password combinations that i use to access multiple email accounts, and each one is a fairly lengthy string of characters. It is a hassle to have to type in the whole string every time i want to switch around to different email accounts. Isn't there a way to create macros in internet explorer, so whenever i want to type in one of the id/passwords, i just hit one of the function keys (f1, f2, f3, etc) and it automatically enters the character string that i have assigned to it?  I have seen people do this in other programs, could it work in this application?

Cannot Create Backup To Network Share

Why did microsoft make backup useless in windows 7 home premium by disabling backup to network drive? Clearly a lot of development time went into the code necessary to prevent that. What was the reason?Windows 7 home premium - there is no way to use it to backup to a network share. I have a machine in my home designated as a server, and i'm using an open source solution to backups today.

I really like the concept of backup in windows 7, but for some bizarre reason ms poured tons of resources into disabling that functionality. It's almost as bad as the absurd limitation on manipulating groups (e.g. I cannot create a backup users group in home, that's another features that's limited to "pro"?!

Backup / Create Image Fails

Windows 7 backup/create image fails because it's trying to backup both the system drive and a boot drive that is fat32. The system automatically picks both my system (local) windows 7 drive and my boot drive (another drive i dual boot from) to create an image from. Since image creation cannot be done on fat32 drives the image creation fails with a notice on how to convert the fat32 drive to ntfs (which is not what i want to do).

Unable To Create A Restore Point

I purchased a anytime upgrade from windows 7 home, to windows 7 professional. For some reason my computer will not allow me to set a restore point. The upgrade stops until i provide a restore point. I need to work around this and install windows 7 professional without a restore point. The new operating system should correct all other problems. How do i do this?

Besides not letting me create a restore point my computer seems to have trouble detecting it's own dvd drive. Before i bought it the store was using it as the floor model. Since it was the last one they had, they run out of any installation disks. How would i reinstall the old system so i could install the new system? I need a windows 7 professional work-a-round

Cannot Create A System Repair Disc

We have had this problem since first boot.

After
Start->maintenance->backup and restore->create a system repair disc , a grayed out dialog window comes up with "create a system repair disc" as title, but is immediately covered by another dialog window that says: microsoft windows repair disc has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

There is a choice of "debug" or "close window". Debug leads to the same dialog window without the choice of "debug" and "close. " Closes both dialog windows.

This activity will create errors in the event viewer but there is no information. The event id, source, and log fields are "-". Using recdisc.exe produces the same result. It does not matter if there is media in the drive or not. Re-booting does not help. Device manager says the matshita dvd-ram uj892as dvd drive is ok. The drive plays music and movies fine. Any clues?

Create System Image Failed

Upgraded windows 7 home premium to ultimate using anytime upgrade. Tried to create system image on a second hard drive, and it failed with a message about not having enough disk space on the destination drive. Before starting the backup, i got a message that about 27gb would be needed. There is over 100gb of free space on the second hard drive. Tried again, this time saving to my networked shared drive, also with over 100gb free space. Same failure message. The system c: drive shows 52. 1gb free of 74. 4gb

Xcopy: Unable To Create Directory

'm trying to write a batch file that will perform incremental backups each night. The file looks like this:

Xcopy "c:usersdavalynnmy documents" "z:backupsdavalynn backupmy documents" /h /r /s /e /i /c /y /d
Xcopy "c:usersdavalynnappdataroamingthunderbirdprofilesvdkm8ik1. Default" "z:backupsdavalynn backupvdkm8ik1. Default" /h /r /s /e /i /c /y /d
Xcopy "c:usersdavalynnfavorites" "z:backupsdavalynn backupfavorites" /h /r /s /e /i /c /y /d

The last two xcopy commands work fine. The first one, however, yields the following error:

Access denied
Unable to create directory - z:backupsdavalynn backupmy documents
File not found - *. *
0 file(s) copied

All the directories referenced in the batch file exist on the z: drive - i created them myself. There must be a syntax problem somewhere, and i've been looking at it for so long i can't see it.

Unable To Create The System Image

I have two acer slimline towers. One almost one year, the other just two weeks. I thought that finally i shoud create a system image. So far i was lucky and haven't lost anything but after the purchase of the second acer i became a little more concerned.

I purchased iomega 1tb external drive ntfs and tried to create the system image. On the older comp. I receive a message that the harddrive has not enough free space for creating the system image. The 1tb drive is empty. The newer comp. Will not even let me go to the same point. It tells me that "windows 7 backup stopped working". The next message gives me a choice to cancel or debug but nothing happens anyway. From reading several non-microsoft forums i assume that this is a serious problem and my concern is who will give me new windows if i loose the content of one or both of my computers when there is no longer hard copy of windows supplied. One comp is 32bit, the other is 64bit. Both have w& professional upgrade.

If i may add another question, the newer comp, the 64bit doesn't shut off properly. It takes 4 minutes at least. The older one with much more stuff in it shuts off immediately. I tried to stop services and startup programs but it doesn't help.

I am considering purchasing windows 7 upgrade to go from xp. I do not have my manufacturer's recover disc and they say they are unable to supply a replacement. I have windows 7 on another machine and the first thing i was advised to do was to create some recovery discs. I am looking for confirmation this will be same after upgrading and if i need to reinstall at a later date i can use these discs.
