Multiple Hard Drive Pc Installation

Just a simple question! At the moment i'm running xp - which means i'll need to move all my data etc (i know all that business). However, i have 2 hard drives on my pc - one which i will use for the os - the other for my music/videos etc. When i upgrade to windows 7, should i physically remove the music/video hard-drive? Or will it be safe, as i will be installing the os on the other hard-drive? I don't want to lose the data on the music/video hard-drive. I hope that makes sense!

Formatting Hard Drive During Installation

I'm doing a custom install of windows 7 professional from vista home premium. I'd like to reformat the drive before installing, but i'm not sure how. It's unclear to me whether that option will appear during the installation process or if it's something i have to do on my own. Which is it? How do i reformat my disk before the install?

Ok, i just chose which drive to install on and clicked "next. " The program started installing 7! I just wanted to see what the "next" part of the setup was to see if it had the reformat option. Anyway, is there any way to reformat at this point? Will i have to install windows 7, reformat, and reinstall? I'm rather frustrated right now. Note to microsoft: make the button say "install, " not "next. "

Win 7 Installation After A Hard Drive Failure

I had to replace the hard drive on my neice's gateway laptop. I have reinstalled her original operating system because i have the discs that came with her machine. She purchased a windows 7 upgrade and i want to reinstall it now, but i am sure when activation takes place it will tell me that key is invalid and has already been used. I have searched the threads all over the web and i don't see where this issue has been addressed anywhere. Any ideas.

.msi Installation Directory Must Be On A Local Hard Drive

Every time i try to run a particular . Msi i get this. "Installation directory must be on a local hard drive". Its not the msi as ive tested it on another computer. The msi is a plug-in tool called t-splines by autodesk. Ive also tried older versions with the same error, things i've tried so far:

Sys restore
Safe mode
Right click - take ownership

I uninstalled 7zip which i already had, then reinstalled with the . Msi from the website to test if it was all msi, however it actually worked. I was looking around for other . Msi install software just to test it but can't find any. If you could point me in the direction of some . Msi files which i can test on my rig. Edit, just tried a few other msi's i had on my computer and i get the error 1723.

Win 7 Upgrade Version - Installation On Reformatted Hard Drive

Win 7 (upgrade version) reinstallation following hard drive reformat. Need to reinstall xp now in order to activate win 7. I made the mistake of creating primary boot drives too small for an os other than xp or linux. Shortly after install i was unable to update my win 7 because of lack of space on the hard drive (all programs i could change the installation of, were on a separate drive). That meant i had to wipe the hard drive to repartition it.

I was under the impression that i could upgrade to win 7 after a clean install by putting the disk in and having windows check for it, like when i upgraded from me to xp. (Yes, i realize now the error of my ways. ) Now i need to fix it. Add to it, i have 32-bit xp and 64-bit win 7.

Having contacted microsoft tech support, i was told i could simply reinstall my xp and win 7 would recognize that it was there and set up dual boot. That isn't the case, as i suspected. In the reformat, i have lost some data that i thought i had backed up and obviously didn't, which is why i really don't want to reinstall win 7 a third time after reinstalling xp.

I have no windows. Old because of the reformat/repartitioning of my drive. Is there anything else i can do? (I'm so tired of being penalized with drm, activation etc. For purchasing licensed software because of all the pirates out there!).

Installation In Multiple Systems

I have a total of 4 computers (2 desktops and 2 laptops) in my home belonging to myself and my brother. I want to purchase windows 7 ultimate and what i want to know is whether i can install it in all of my 4 computers, that is can i install it in more than one computer. Please understand that i am not talking about multiple users but multiple systems. Of course it will be used for only domestic purposes and not any commercial or business purpose. Would i face any problems if i try to install windows 7 ultimate in more than one system?

Upgrading Existing Hard Drive To Ssd Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a laptop with one hard drive slot. I want to change the existing hard drive slot to a ssd. My laptop came with windows 7 pro pre-installed (no disk supplied). When i purchased the machine i created the windows recovery disk.

I would like to know if the upgrade is as simple as:

1) removing the current 500g hard drive
2) installing the new new ssd
3) running the recovery disks to re-install my copy of windows 7 pro or am i missing something?

Upgrade On New Hard Drive Because Of Failed Hard Drive

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Installation On A Non C: Drive, Still Shows On C: Drive

I have tried various methods and can change the drive letter designation of my various drives under w7p(64) but seemingly one cannot (easily) change the drive letter that the os operates under. (Why w7 feels it has to be on the c: drive eludes me!) My hdd was previously set up under xp with a c: for utility stuff, d: as the wxpp-os and i was trying to install w7p onto the e: partition. (A 1. 5 tb drive, so each partition has plenty of space. )

After rebooting, w7p displays that it had the c: drive, wxpp had the d: drive, and my utility partition had no drive letter designation at all. Rebooting to xpp showed the proper drive designations. As i mentioned first, i can use the "disk management" feature to change all the drive letters around other than for the w7 os drive. Xp has no problems with my setup, and i have even managed to get vista to accept residing on a non c: drive previously.

Any hints as to if or how i can get w7p to accept being called out on the e: drive? (Which is where it is/was installed after all, i just want it to wear its proper name tag. ) It's very confusing to dual boot the system and not have the drive letters be consistent. If w7 is using some sort of remapping to allow more varied handling of the drive resources, why can't it allow me to continue handling them the way i've been handling them for the past 20 years?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Move Win 7 Installation To C Drive

I inadvertently installed windows 7 on the recovery drive in my pc - drive d, not the c drive as it should be. I completely messed up my pc - somehow i installed windows 7 on the small recovery drive in my dell laptop - not the c drive. Now, all my software is gone and i cannot even reinstall ms office, since it forces the installation to the d drive and there is virtually no space.

All my files and photos and music are still on the c drive. How can i move the windows 7 installation to the c drive where it belongs?

Installation Cannot See Drive After System Partition

I recently got a hewlett packard 630 laptop which had linux os. I decided to replace it with windows 7 and face two major issues:

1) when i was installing win 7, it asked me to create a new hard drive because the 10gb partition could not fit win 7 ultimate 64-bit i wanted to install. I therefore created a 20gb hard drive and completed win 7 installation through usb. However, when i finished i could only see the 20gb hard drive and not the remaining 450gb.

2) i installed win 7 and ms office 2010 properly. However, the system is missing hp tools, such as network, ethernet, pci etc. As a result, i do not have internet. I tried a number of drivers from the hp site, with no success. How do i correct the problems above?

Installation Failed - The Wrong Volume Is In The Drive

Windows xp to windows 7 installation failed. "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd". Trying to install a legal copy of windows 7 (not downloaded either, actually purchased disk). The disk is an upgrade disk and i am upgrading from windows xp (32-bit) to windows 7 (64-bit).

When i attempt to install it, when it gets to "expanding windows files" i get the error message "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd into drive d:" and the installation fails regardless of whether or not i click "cancel" "ignore" or "continue". What is wrong?

I ran a system upgrade check before and everything seems to be ready for the 64-bit.

This question has been asked before but no solution proposed on this forum that i found. Everything is is so slow too! Just to get to the initial installation screen takes 20 minutes and when it begins installation it stalls at 0% for 30 minutes before it throws me the error. How can this be so hard to upgrade?

Will Upgrade Installation Require More Space On Boot Drive ?

I have a very small 32gb boot drive with vista premium installed. Will upgrade installation require more space on the boot drive? The boot drive i have is an 32gb ssd. Since ssds are so expensive i ordered this small one as a boot drive only. So will i need space available on the c drive to upgrade my windows vista premium 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit? I have a secondary hard drive as my f drive. It is 320gb and contains all my programs and games, leaving about 200 gigs left.

If space is indeed required from my c drive, is there an alternative way to upgrade?

Clean Installation Issues - Wrong Volume Is In Drive

Clean installation issues results various transient faults - mostly hangs. One reoccurring message is "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd"

I'm using a retail version of windows 7 premium that i purchased tuesday night. I've tried on and off for the past three nights to install w7.initially, i had xp on the machine and installed w7 via the backup of the xp files and using the network for additional patches. The install hung towards the end after i entered a password for the user account (e.g. Drives dead, mouse/keyboard unresponsive, etc).

So i hard-cycled the machine. At this point i was able to log on, but the dvd drive or my second internal drive would not function. I figured something had went wrong with the install over xp and i had no issues with trying a clean install, so i went for that it next.

Prior to the first clean install i removed my second hd and all usb devices to minimize the hardware in play. Once i started running the clean install i've seen mostly hangs during the file extraction process (3%, 11% - haven't got to 62% yet :o) ). One error message in particular i"ve seen is listed in the title "please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd".

Some things i've tried: the package and disc were in mint condition when i purchased them so hopefully there are no issues with the integrity of the dvd. My machines dvd drive is in decent shape and i have recently installed other operating systems and watched dvd's without a without a problem. I don't believe the disc or drive are issues.

I've messed around with turning off the floppy, usb and ahci support in the bios. I've tried installing the 32 and 64 bit versions. I tried to access drivers off the gigabyte cd, but that didn't work so much. At this point i'm open to new suggestions :d

My hardware:
Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l - http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16813128059
Wd raptor - wd360gd
E6850
Nvidia 8800 gt
Sony dvd drive

Ocz Ssd Drive And Reformat Installation Issues

I was having difficulty with my motherboard bios not reading my ocz vertex ssd and 2 other hd. I believe this was due to an incorrect setup of previous bios to run a raid configuration in ahci. The only way the motherboard was able to read the drives again after all cmos were cleared was to put a jumper onto the ocz ssd. I am now trying to reformat my ocz 60gb ssd in order to install windows 7. After inserting the windows 7 disc i am able to access the installation prompt, when i select the ocz drive windows 7 is unable to install, however it gives me the option to install a driver for the device.

1. Will i be able to re-install the ocz ssd drivers from this prompt?

2. Any other suggestions for a fix?

3. I am also having trouble figuring out which driver the ocz drive requires, because i am unable to determine its current driver version.

Hard Drive Not Available

I did an upgrade from vista to windows 7 home premium. I did a clean install, not an upgrade. I had 2 hard drives on the pc. At the start of the process, it asked it i wanted to partition drives. I responded yes and did the reboot from the disk. Each hard drive had 2 partitions under vista. I wanted to move to 1 partition under windows 7. It allowed me to delete the virtual drives and proceeded with the install. Everything when fine from there without any errors.

When i check my computer, only 1 of the drives is available. I went to device manager and the controller for the 2nd drive is there. It says it is working properly. I tried updating the driver and it said i had the latest driver. I checked the tab that shows drive statistics and it is blank. At the bottom there is a populate button. I clicked it and it displays the statistics for the drive correctly. It doesn't make it available. If i exit and come back in the statistics are blank again. I have done reboots and it is still not available under my computer. How do i get windows 7 to see this drive?

Hard Drive Score

I had 2 older hard drives running at 7200rpm in sata raid 0 mode and installed win7 64bit. Score was 5. 9. So i went and bought 2 new hard drives, still seagate but with 32mb cache, 500gb. Firstly i installed win7 on 1 drive and still have a score of 5. 9. Then i installed it on both new hard drives using raid 0 mode again and the score was still 5. 9. How do we get a higher score with this thing? All else is above 7 on my system but just hd's are lacking. What can i do?

Hard Drive Switch

I am about to get a replacement laptop due to issue, my query is the following. I currently have windows 7 ultimate 32bit, my new system comes with windows home premium 7 64bit. Can i just swap the hard drive from my old system to the new system and update drivers for the hard ware etc or will all programs be a mess and i would be better just to transfer all data and lose the ultimate version (which was an upgrade from vista ultimate 32bit)?

Partition Hard Drive

I got a new pc with windows 7 64-bit. The c drive has 578 gb of free space. I want to partition it so the c drive has about 100gb, and then my data drive will have 478gb. When i use the shrink volume utility in computer management, the most i am able to shrink the c drive is about 302gb. That will put the c drive at 276 gb, but i would like to get it down to around 100gb. Do i need to buy some partition software to do this or is there another way to try this in windows.

Corrupted Hard Drive

I tried to upgrade my toshiba laptop from windows vista to windows 7 and it went into a continuous reboot loop and then destroyed my hard drive. I replaced my hard drive and then tried using the windows 7 upgrade for full installation and it seemed to take, but it didn't give me a chance to put the product key in and now it's asking for the product key(which i tried) and saying that i have 24 hours to put a full version product key in or i can't use my windows. What can i do? Please let me know soon.
