Win7 Lock Disables Monitor Shut Off

I worked with medical records, and i found a screen lock that also disabled the task manager, but that feature doesn't work with 7. I tried using 7's built in lock feature, but my monitors don't shut off at the 5 minute idle time setting i've set. When i use the old lock, the monitors go off after being idle, even when i have my tv card running underneath.

I tried searching to see if others have reported that problem here, but i didn't come up with anything. Has anyone run into this problem and come up with any work-arounds or fixes?

Monitor Shut Off After Boot Screen

Can't believe i have to ask this problem again, previously my problem is my screen gets lower resolution when windows supposed to shows login screen (honestly it's remain unsolved) now my monitor suddenly just turn off when windows supposed to shows login screen (even though i can clearly hear the login screen's sound. )

It works fine after i press the power button to power up my laptop, the monitor showing bios & windows boot screen, but after that my monitor just turn off. Even when i'm performing clean boot (disable all startup items and disable other than microsoft services via msconfig) this problems still remains.

The only thing i could do it's just press the power button to shut down my laptop improperly then press the power button again to power up, then the problem's gone. Why this problem come on my 1st boot, suddenly gone in 2nd boot and sometime happens again when i'm trying to restart or power up again after shutting down my laptop from my 2nd boot?

Need to upgrade my graphic driver? Already have the newest version
15. 12. 75. 4. 1930 (8. 15. 10. 1930) from downloadcenter. Intel.com

My device manager shows no problem/conflict at all. Don't have any second monitor plugged in my laptop ever since i've installed windows 7.

Explorer 8 Disables Oe In Xp Mode

I have been using outlook express in xp mode (under windows 7) for e-mail. When i installed explorer 8, suddenly oe would allow me to read e-mail and usenet posts but would not allow me to enter text when i tried to reply to messages. No cursor would appear in the message field although i could enter recipients and subjects in those fields. When i uninstalled explorer 8 i could once again use oe completely.could someone from microsoft explain why explorer 8 for xp mode apparently disables oe in xp mode, and if there is a way to both install explorer 8 and continue to use oe in xp mode?

Upgrade Disables Optical Drive

Trying to upgrade to windows 7-64 bit from vista 64-bit on an asus desktop computer. All non-compatible programs have been uninstalled and computer re-booted.

Several attempts at doing the upgrade always result in the same problem. After the 'download updates' completes, files are copied, license accepted. Then the message appears that i have to re-start so system files can be updated. Re-start works just fine back to vista, but i can't get back to the cd to do the upgrade because the optical drive doesn't have a driver anymore. I've restored to a prior time several times to make sure i was following all the directions, but can't get past this issue.

Aero Peek Disables Every Time Software Update

Graphics card: ati radeon hd 4670 from asus. Driver version installed: 8. 703 released i believe 02/10. Every single time i do a software update, it doesn't matter whether it is a windows update or other software, the driver version rolls back to 8. 632. 1. 2000 released 08/09, which is a generic driver for the ati 4600 series and does not support aero peek. Subsequently aero peek becomes disabled as a feature. I have tried and had no luck with the following to get aero peek to work when this occurs.

1. Driver update in device manager with the result being "current driver is the latest version"

2. Disabling and enabling the device in device manager with a reboot.

3. Running "setup" from the driver update i have downloaded, with a reboot.

In all cases the result is the feature does not work and the check box to turn it on is grayed out.
The only thing that works is to uninstall the driver and software in the device manager then reboot the computer and allow windows to find the "new device". I then have to reboot the computer again to get it working. With software updates every three days this is a huge pain. I contacted the device mfg and the best they could do was send me to an updated driver. No luck. I feel this is a issue with windows as something is causing the rollback, and then not allowing an update. Any ideas or solutions would be great.

Lock Memory Privilege

I'm trying to decide on which version of 7 to get and have a few questions. I'm leaning towards 7 pro 64 bit but concerned about compatibility issues with software and hardware drivers. I think i'll be ok with most of my software working but i'm concerned about drivers for things like graphics cards and other drives. Any thoughts?

Which one of the windows 7 versions support the ability to change the lock memory pages setting? I know that vista premium did not support changing this.

Delay In Caps Lock Key

I've recently moved from a computer with vista to one with windows 7. There's a noticeable delay in the operation of the caps lock key, whether toggling on or off. For example, if i'm typing and the cursor is on the screen, and i inadvertently hit caps lock, the cursor goes away for a couple of seconds, i get a caps lock icon in the lower right of my screen, and i can't type nor toggle the caps lock key again until the cursor comes back. On the old vista computer, this was essentially intantaneous. Is this built into windows 7, and can i make a settings change or a tweak to change this?

Cannot Lock Laptop Using Win+l Key Through Keyboard

Within the past 2-3 weeks, i can no longer lock the laptop using win+l through the laptop keyboard, but can using the usb keyboard. It's the oddest thing. I've unplugged the keyboard, waited for the machine to signal it has been disconnected, and still failed. Also tried rebooting with no luck. Anyone ever heard or seen of anything like this before?

Computer Will Freeze, Lock Up During Game Play

So i just bought a new gaming desktop this year. It was $1300 and i'm very disappointed, i bought 500gb of hard drive space and only 9 out of my 46 games work with it. Mostly because a lot of the games were made before 1998. I'm only asking about 3 of the games that i've managed to get working: civilization 3, civ 3 play the world, and civ iv/beyond the sword.

Problem: all of the games start and will play normally but at certain times during the game-play the computer will freeze, lock-up, or just kick me out of the game for no reason. It happens at different times in each game. In civilization 3, i can play fine for the most part but if i accidentally scroll too fast on the map it just locks-up or freezes and i have to shut it down with the task manager. In civilization 3:play the world i can play to the end of a game with no problems but as soon as it switches to the results screen after the game it kicks me out to a black screen and then i have to go into the task manager to turn it off and start over.

In civ iv, about halfway through any game it will just shut down everything and take me back to windows. There doesn't seem to be any particular action that triggers it. As far as i know these games should be compatible with vista, could these issues have something to do with the operating system hogging too much memory?

Hope to get an answer soon, it will save me many headaches trying to fix this alone.

Comp specs: (if you need more of these let me know)
-Windows vista home premium 64-bit
-2gb ram

Dual Monitor Problem - 2nd Monitor Detected Black

Ok, so i have a dell that was running vista and two monitors. When i upgraded to windows 7 pro i ran into the infamous black screen problem and fixed it. However, i only fixed my main monitor. When i open the display window, both of my monitors are detected but my secondary monitor shows a black screen and the monitor itself says there is no signal detected from my pc.

The strange thing is my pc thinks its working (i can drag a window from my working monitor towards the black one and it moves out of my working monitor into the black screen). I currently have both of them plugged in using a dvi to vga splitter and i have also updated the drivers by clicking the "update driver" button in the monitor properties window. Please help if you can!

Cannot Move Windows From One Monitor To Other - Dual Monitor Setup

I have two monitors of the same resolution connected to an ati radeon hd 4300/4500 video card. In windows 7 extended mode i see a full working desktop on one monitor, but only the background picture on the other - the four-square flag motif again a blue background with wispy lines, butterfly etc.

No taskbar, icons or anything else. On one occasion briefly the mouse cursor appeared on it instead of on the full desktop image. If i try to drag a window on to the second monitor it won't go there. The settings are landscape with two mointors "1" and "2". I have two images but how can i use the second one?

Windows Will Not Shut Down

Since installing all my drivers and programs on ultimate 64 windows will not shut down. If i try to restart or shut down it just sits there on the logging off screen forever. There is occasional disk activity. I've tried safe mode and windows shuts down perfectly fine. So i can only assume its a driver of some system setting causing the problem, all the drivers are the latest and are also used on a dual boot vista system.

Pc Will Not Shut Down Completely

I have setup a dual boot system, xp & 7, on two separate hard drives. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks. I am not sure what suddenly caused the problem but windows 7 will no longer shut down completely on its own. It spins at the shutting down screen. I have to hold to power button in to get the computer to shut down. I have tried restoring the computer to an earlier version without success. I have closed the anti-virus program and all other programs. I have also stopped unnecessary processes. It still will not shut down automatically. Windows xp still runs fine and shut down completely on its own.

Pc Restarts Each Time I Try To Shut Down

I've looked through the forums to see if i could find a solution to this issue, but the most i've been able to find is that there might be an incompatible driver somewhere on my system that's causing this to occur. When i click on "shut down", the computer does shut down, but then it turns back on after a few seconds. I had a clean install of windows 7 ultimate (64-bit)done on the computer to wipe everything off of it and start from scratch, and this still occurs. My computer is an mpc clientpro 424. I've tried disabling automatic restart, and the issue still occurs. Can anyone help?

Pc Will Not Shut Down And Explorer Crashing

Hey, so when i try to shut down my computer it just gets stuck on the shutting down screen and i have to switch it off by holding down the power button. I'm fairly sure this is because the system cannot end certain processes but i don't know which ones. At first i thought it was itunes because it wouldn't open but would start a process that wouldn't shut down. Then i got it uninstalled and it hasn't helped. Now the other problem, maybe related? When i right click on the desktop explorer crashes (not ie). It doesn't just shut off but stops responding. For some reason i can still use the taskbar and start menu (i thought that was part of explorer). And my computer is constantly running at 100% cpu usage. Its an hp laptop running windows 7 and has had windows on it for at least a couple months running fine.

Media Center Will Not Shut Off

I am running windows 7 and this is a new problem. It did not occur when i installed windows 7. When i login to my laptop the media center comes up, i can not close it. When i hit the 'x' in the upper right corner, it expands but does not close. Then when i try to run any program, it brings up the media center - not the program. I can't access any of my installed programs - only media center. I'm at a loss. When i installed windows7 everything was running perfectly for several weeks and the only thing i have done is to run the automatic updates.

Many Messages About Updates Before Shut Down

Every time i click on the start up button, there is a little yellow shield with a exclamation mark in the center (). It says that i have updates to install, so far, nothing bad has happened. It's just that it takes a long time to shut down with the updates. It's happened about 4 times already ranging from 5 to 26 updates. I'm thinking that this can't be right. Why would there be so many updates to install? Testing it out, i immediately shut down the computer and let it install updates, then after that, i turned it on and waited, sure enough, there were more updates to be installed. I don't know if this is a some kind of bug of virus but the more i know and the faster it's resolved, the better i'll feel.
