Files Do Not Appear In Search Results

I am having a problem with two files not being indexed and not showing up in searches in windows explorer (windows 7 ultimate 64 bits).

The files are two jpgs that a friend sent me over email. I saved them in a subfolder in the picture folder and tagged them with windows live photo gallery.

When i search for the pictures in the windows live photo gallery, they show up immediately (i can search by file name or any of the tags). However, when i search for them from the start menu or from the explorer search bar, they are invisible: if i type any of the tags or their file name, they do not show up, even when i am in the folder containing such files (all other files in the same folder are indexed correctly).

I right clicked each file, then properties. In the general tab, i then clicked on advanced and i found out that the checkbox "allow this file content to be indexed [. ]" Was unchecked. I checked it, rebooted, rebuilt a search index, but the files still don't show up.

Is there some other properties i have to look at? Any workaround?

Explorer Search In Win 7 Accumulate Results From Previous Searches

Why does explorer file search in windows 7 accumulate the results from previous searches and display them altogether? Explorer file search in windows 7 accumulates the results from previous searches and shows these historical searches under the latest set of results. Why?If this is how microsoft intended this to work, they must have lost the plot. The results list seems to get larger and larger, becoming unwieldy.

How do i get the search facility to only return a list of the file name typed into the search field - ie. If i am looking for all the "index.html" files in the 100 sub directories i am searching? How can i prevent this happening. All i want to see in the list is the 100 index.html files and not the previous files like benefits.html, contactmap.html, which i had searched for earlier. Nyone know how to make this work properly?

Browsers & Mail - Google Search Results In Blank Window

This is one of those out-of-the-blue things that just started the other day. When i do a google search, i'll get the first page of results no problem. If i click on any of the search suggestions at the bottom or click to go to the next page of results, the screen goes blank and that's that. Refreshing the page doesn't do anything either. I can open the search results themselves no problem, but anything that involves further searching from the first page doesn't work. This just happens in ie9, it works normally in firefox no probs. Also, this is only happening on my windows 7/64 laptop. On my windows 7/32 desktop all is a-okay.

I've tried emptying the temporary files/cookies etc. With ccleaner, and tried it in private mode as well where the cache and cookies are bypassed. Finally i then tried resetting ie (tools > internet options > advanced > reset). No dice. I can drag page links from the results page up to the tab bar and drop them there and they will open that way (in other words, to go to the next page of links i can click and hold the "next >" link or one of the page numbers at the bottom, drag it up to the tab bar and release and the next page will open in a tab. )

Media Center - Add Recording Search Fails - No Results Found

Windows media center seems to be getting the guide updates fine and my regularly scheduled programs are being recorded as they should be. I can use the guide or various other list mechanisms to see future programs but the add recording->search->title & ->keyword (where you actually have to type something in) fail. Type any letter, and it says, "no results found. " You can type an entire title to a show and it will not find it, yet i can find it using the add recording -> guide, and then a lot of scrolling. Search used to work, but now hasn't worked for several weeks (months?). Guide updates still work because my existing scheduled recordings get every new episode.

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

How To Search Excel Files?

How do i search for excel files? I've tried searching for *. Xlsx. Ok, that's not supported anymore (apparently) as it returns no results (when there are clearly files with . Xlsx filename extension). So i finally figured out the advanced query syntax is ext: and tried ext:. Xlsx. This also returned no results. For some bizarre reason ext:.docx works but ext:. Xlsx (breifly) shows a message below the search field, "no filter matches"what does that mean? How do i search for excel files?

Search For Files On External Hard Drive

I had created a manual backup files on my external hard drive by creating a folder with my computer name and moving the files to that folder. Yesterday i decided to create a backup of my computer using the windows backup feature so it created a backup folder.

On my external hard drive using the name of my computer. I'm guessing the backup software merged with the preexisting folder since they both were named the same thing. Now the folder that i manually backed up my files to is no longer accessible. I can't search for files or use the explorer window to look for files in it. It is treated as a backup folder. Although i have no way of accessing my files, i know that they were not deleted on my external hard drive because the backup of my pc was 50gb large.

My computer says that the external hard drive has 771gb of free space meaning the windows backup software did not overwrite the preexisting folder. My manual backup is still taking up space on the external hard drive. It just changed the folder so i cannot look through it or search for files. How do i change this folder so i can get to my old files?

Search Won't Find All Files

I have a folder under "my documents" that has a hundreds of solidworks files arranged in about 30 different folders. All of the solidworks files contain "sld" in the extension. I navigate to the top folder and then type "sld" in the search box. Of the hundreds of files, it only finds 4 files. I ran the search troubleshooter and it didn't find any problems. I also went to the control panel and made sure that windows search was turned on. Any other ideas?

Update Searches Endlessly, With No Results

Whenever i start windows update, the search bar activates, but it searches endlessly - up to a half hour or more. It doesn't identify any updates needed, nor say that there are no updates. Because of this ongoing problem, i have not been able to get any updates for months. I have checked and confirmed that the windows firewall is active, and no other firewalls are active.

Right now, i'm trying to install an ocr scanning "pen. " I installed the software, but can't install the device. It says "error updating the driver (hid:*windrvr6) with the inf file. " I hope to resolve this through windows update. However, in fact, when i type windrvr6. Inf in the search box on the start menu, it finds the file. I would welcome advice both about how to get windows update working, and about how to get the software can "find" this missing file.

No Sound Device Strange Results

6 months ago i installed  windows 7 32 bit evaulation copy build 7100, installed all drivers for my external devices. I am using a motu 896 firewire as my audio device. Everything worked beautiful. Last week i decided to install a newly purchased copy of windows 7 home premium. I decided to install a fresh install of the 64 bit version. The install went perfect and i activated it. I installed the motu drivers from there website (as i did 6 months ago) but the 64 bit flavor. The installed , ok and i rebooted and plugged in the device and turn it on, the plug&play triggered and found the device and installed the drivers and said device is ready to use.

I go to the control panel, to the sound section and it says no audio devices found. I check the system devices and the drivers are loaded an they state they are working properly, not yellow flags and no sound. I tried contacting moto but they had no clue since i had it working in the eval copy of windows 7. The only difference was i installed 64 bit, so i removed and installed the 32 bit version but ended up with the same results.

How can the eval version work and the purchased version does not.

Explorer Searches Problem With Ordering Results By Full Path

Explorer searches no longer (i.e. Since xp) seem to allow ordering results by full path in the folder column. Open explorer, browse to "c:", search for "*. *Proj", lots of results, "folder" column (which used to show whole path logically) now shows last folder then first to last-but-one folder (e.g. "Aardvark(c:program files)"). This means that i cannot get a logical order when i order by this column. Very annoying when trying to find visual studio projects on my machine.

This sucks! I realize this is probably by design since the addition of libraries but it means that i have to reboot to ubuntu to do this type of search ordering now (pain!) If anyone knows a way around this to put folder as e.g. "C:program filesaardvark"i will be very grateful.

P. S. Please drop ntfs asap. Linux uses a modern file-system (ext4:2006), solaris uses a modern file-system (zfs:2004 - loved by codeproject.com) please don't keep using this slow and bad filesystem - the little improvements each year since 1993 are really started to seem sad and ineffectual.

Search Not Working

I did a fresh install of windows 7 64 in october and the search in the start menu worked like a charm. It's now two months later and i noticed that it is not working on my default admin profile. When i type in the search box, it does not say "searching" at the top and it doesn't pull up anything. When i click on "see more results", i get an error message that "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item. "

This error puzzled me because search still works on my additional user profile that does not have admin privileges. I double checked to make sure that my admin profile had access to all of the files i was trying to search. I have had no problems accessing any files directly.

I tried deleting and re-indexing, i trimmed down the number indexed files, i tried using the search troubleshooter, and i moved the indexing folder all to no avail. When none of this worked, i created a new windows user profile and ported all the data from my default profile. The search worked on this new profile only until the next time i rebooted my computer. Since my other user profile still works, i even tried changing the newly created admin profile to a user profile just to see if administrators somehow had limited permissions, but had no luck.

At this point, i'm completely out of ideas.

I doubt the other windows issue i'm working on is related to this issue, but i want to mention it anyway on the off chance there is a correlation. I'm having resource issues with wmpnetwk.exe. So far, i've managed to cut its cpu consumption from 100% to 50% through the tips on this site. I'm not asking for help on that issue in this post though.

Search Is Not Working

Content search does not work. The content search in windows explorer does not work. Under "more options" i have selected "content". In indexing options i have selected the correct folder and file type. I have selected "index properties and file contents". I have rebuilt the index. I have tried restarting my laptop. In folder options – search i have tried "always search file names and contents"i have also tried "don’t use the index when searching in file folders for system files" the only results i get is the result of a search of the file name but not the contents.

Search Not Working At All

Windows 7 search has stopped returning any results. If i type into the search bar at the top of explorer, no results are found. I can use wild-cards, complete filenames that i know are in the folder or words that i know are in the indexed files. Most of the references on the web talk about removing or checking registry keys that either don't exist or shouldn't, my event log indicates that there's a problem accessing some files, but the system, local service and normal users have access.

There's no reference to the user that is trying to crawl/gather the data so i can't tell if the error is real. I've tried changing security, i've moved and rebuilt the index. What i don't get, is this was working a few weeks ago. I did a backup and now nothing works. I can't even locate a file by wildcard file searches so it isn't just the index that's broken, its the search behavior. I've looked under as many covers as i can, and yet i still can't fix it. I've changed security, i've researched more web pages than i care to remember and still no resolution that is applicable or makes sense.

The microsoft web site has turned into a fluffy site with no technical data that is relevant. The help system doesn't even describe the options that are present on the screen so you could work out what the options are. I've worked in it for 20 years as a developer and support person. This has got me totally ready to move to a mac.

Cannot Open Items From Within Search

I note that many, many folks are having difficulty with explorer in windows 7. This is likely related, but i can't find discussion of this specific issue.

Windows 7 pro x64

When i have the search window open (i use ctrl-f to launch it), it erratically but frequently ceases to allow me to open a file or email message from within the search window. This is usually accompanied by the preview pane ceasing to work. This is then usually followed by explorer crashing.

However, all of the above are somewhat inconsistent. They happen on a nearly daily basis, but in different permutations. Restarting will always resolve the issue, but only temporarily. It sometimes returns immediately, sometimes hours later.

I don't see this behavior on my other systems so perhaps it is a third party software issue. But i can't associate this with any obvious third party software interference.

Has anyone experienced and resolved a similar issue?

And, who can recommend a third party search utility that works well with windows 7 and specifically with outlook 2007? I am completely dependent on searching my email archives, previewing and then opening the messages from within the search window/utility.

Search Yahoo Problem

Folks, i decided to give yahoo! Search a shot as an alternative to google i have been using, but there is something really bothersome, i am wondering if it is y! Causing this or it is my system, browser, etc?

When i type a search in yahoo, for example "how to edit sendto menu pcmag", it pulls up results, since i am looking for what pcmag had to say about it, i add a pcmag keyword, the link i want to see is listed in the first place, but sometimes, not everytime, when i click on this link, i end up in a totally unrelated advertisement website. It doesn't happen with google. Just a few minutes ago, i was doing another search about windows 7's media center, i clicked on of the search results and i ended up in this vlc media player advertisement. At first you don't notice, you skim through the page and once you can't find the information you are looking for, usually you wake up within a second, you go back, click the link again and this time the result displays correctly.

What is happening here? I use msse for virus protection and spybot for spyware protection, if it is yahoo abusing it, i am going back to google.

Cannot Search Pictures By Tags

I, don't know if this should've been placed pictures & video but i think it's more of a search issue. Here's my problem. I have a lot of images on my computer witch are very well organized but i want to organize them even more with tags. I did some experimenting with this and there is something i don't understand. Some pictures, when i downloaded them from the internet, already had some tags so i searched in that folder for tags:tag_name and the picture was found. Then i only searched for tag_name and again, the same picture was among the results.

I'm not sure i like this very much but i'l get over it. After that i added another tag to that same picture and when i searched for tags:additional_tag_name i found that image again. Ok so far. My problem was when i chose an image without any tags to start with and added some tags to it. It never appeared in the search results. I have absolutely no idea why this picture was different from the ones that worked. All images are jpg and looking at the details, there is no major difference between the ones that are working and the ones that are not.

To a lot of my pictures i added tags from picasa 3 and in the details tab, next to program name it sais picasa 3. Don't know if this is a problem or not, but my issue is the same for pictures that were never modified in picasa or any other program. If you have any ideas?

Search In Media Center

Have upgraded to windows 7 home premium from windows vista home premium. Have a lot of music on my computer and get a problem with search. I have organized my albums by artists and album-artists. i.e. All elvis presley's albums have his name both in artist and album artist and if some one else is participating, they are in artist (and elvis is albumartist). I have a lot of collection albums, as "best of 90's" and "best of bikers" etc.

All these have albumartist like "various artists" and artist like performing artist. In my computer they are shown as described and if i play the album from media center the artist name is shown right. But when i use "search" in media center for one of these artists; i get the name, but when i click on the name i get the answer "no songs available for this artist". If i search for the song, i get it displayed. What do i have to do?

Wildcards, Keywords, Search Items

If i enter track in the search box for folders, it finds 2 files with track. If i enter *track*, it finds 4 files. Why? Are there other search symbols like asterisk? I'm using a book titled ms windows 7 in depth by cowart and knittel. It shows an example of start->search where a 'b' is entered. Every line produced shows some use of "b", but several do not. For example.

Videos(1)
Wildlife

Why wildlife.

Later, a figure showing showing "search results in libraries>" shows a 'b' typed in the search window. Again wildlife shows up. Possibly the same problem above. Further, the figure shows a calendar above the file folder which says "select a date or date range". What's that about?

Somewhere i read w7 allows boolean operators and maybe some search keys like wize: *.txt < 100 mb. Where do i find out more about them?

Xp Style File Content Search

Where is the win7 intuitive search function? Here's a classic example:

I have many of my docs backed up on an 8 gig memory stick (a ton of ms pub files, notepad docs, power-points, and so forth). I must have them on the memory stick so that i periodically search them to another computer with xp installed. Somewhere in this extensive library i have information related to a particular subject. I need to search the content of all files on the drive, looking for a particular ascii string.

In xp a search is easy.
Start / search / . Specify search criteria:
I enter the "word or phrase in the file"
And tell it where to look "look in:" drive g: [the mem stick] and bingo.
It goes and finds it, automatically searching the whole drive (the complete directory tree).

Now in windows 7 the search function has been removed from the start menu!
Well, where is it?! What happened to the xp intuitive search capability?
This is a powerful and important feature! Where did it go?

(Please do not explain how to search file names, or "asdf" contained within the filename.
This is not what i'm looking for. I want to search file contents. )

Win7 help function is worthless in this regard. Either 7 has the capability, or not, and either you know how, or not, but i'm hoping tech support has a straight up answer.

File Download Search In Folder

I use windows 7 ultimate. Firefox latest version. I download music preview files, alot and i want to find a way to better short my file during download. e.g. Axwell - take this ( dj remix )

That is a song name. I have a music folder with many subfolders ( their name are based from source of download or genre ) my problem now is a have multiple ''double'' / alot of same songs in different folders, which take too much hdd space.

When i click download, i have a pop up window, ask for ''save as'' it direct me to my music folder, now i can see if i already own the file if it's written exactly the same (ask to replace file). But when i am into a sub-folder i dont know if i already have it in music main folder or another music subfolder. ( Lets say, im into c:/music/electro , i want to know if i already have that song in c:/music/house or c:/music or all sub-folder in music without having to look every folder before download. )

Do you understand my request? Is their such feature in windows 7?

Search And The Up One Level (folder) Button

So i have searched for something and found the folder i am looking for. I want to delete this folder (not just its contents) and maybe some other things in it's parent folder. Anyhow, i click into this folder from the search and then try to go up. First instinct, up button. Well that's not there, that's just old habit. Look to the whole breadcrumb bit. Only takes me back to my search.

Why would i want to go back to my search if i found what i am looking for. Lright, well maybe i am missing something. *Right click* look for up a level or something. Nada. The only way i can find out where i am is by clicking on a file and going to it's properties. Sorry, but this is just plain poor designing. I'll admit that maybe i am missing something still, please someone help me.

Turn Off Search In Address Bar

I recently downloaded the latest windows update, which in turn updates internet explorer to 8. What i absolutely loved about ie is that i could just type something in the address field (without adding ".com") and it would automatically pull up the website. Saved me a lot of time and loved the functionality of it. Now that it's been updated, i can't do that anymore. Ie8 automatically pulls up google search instead of just loading the page. Is there any way to turn this feature off? It slows my work down. And little minutes each time tends to add up.

Win 7 Search A File Issue

After much browsing through the various questions and responses i oficially give up. I have set settings, rebuilt indices until i quit. Fortunately, i have win7 pro, which includes the xp virtual machine. So, when i want a trustworthy search, i start the virtual machine and go to the xp search routine.
