Files Copy Over Usb Drive Can Only See Empty Folders

Using transcend f25 external usb drive: files copy over but i can only see empty folders (drive size indicates that the files are still there, though).

I'm using windows 7 professional and everything seems to be working fine. I attached my new transcend f25 usb drive (300g) to use for backups. I copied over about 20 gigs of archives and had windows run it's first backup. Everything seemed fine, and the available space on the drive is now about 230g, which sounds right. The problem is, i can only see empty folders on the drive!

Now, i know for sure that the files are there because i tried plugging the drive into an old xp laptop - bingo there were all my files! Can anyone advise me? This seems like a configuration problem, or maybe a drive error. The files were there when i first added them, though, so it's very odd! How can i see my files?

After Upgrade Usb Hard Drive Folders Are Empty

After upgrade from vista 64 to windows 7 64, usb hard drive initially works, then at some point all the "folders are empty" and i cannot access files untill i reboot. Then same thing all over again. My setup was working perfectly fine with vista 64; i had a 1tb  seagate freeagent external hard drive where i had all my pictures, music and movies. These media was monitored by my zune software, windows media player and windows media center, and also shared on my network.

Then i upgraded to windows 7 64. At first it seemed fine, windows 7 recognized and external drive, all applications were still monitoring my media from it, and i was able to access the files. But after a couple of minutes of accessing the files, the drive just seems to suddenly go offline.

I can still browse the folder structure, but the i don't see any files, and folders are empty. In some folders i see the files (maybe the info was cached) and if i try to access it, i get an error to "check the location of the file" or "file not available". Once i reboot my system, then everything seems back to normal but as soon as i try to access anything, it breaks as before. It fails even more promptly if i try to download something on to the drive.

All the usb drivers seem ok. The external hard drive works normally on my laptop that has a windows 7 32bit, so no problems in the drive itself. I tried removing all other usb devices (i have 7 usb inputs on and two more on my monitor), i tried changing power options so that usb ports are not automatically shut off by the pc, i tried reinstalling all the hardware drives including the nvidia chipset driver, i even reinstalled windows 7. The issue is still not resolved.

Cannot Copy / Paste Large Files From Usb

I tried drag and drop. I tried ctrl+c & ctrl+v. Neither work when trying to move a large folder (7-8gb) from my usb to my hard drive. I feel like i am the only one having this bug. It works with smaller files from my usb to my hard drive - even up to a couple gigs only took a couple minutes.
Update:  xp says "cannot copy file. Cannot read from the source file or disk. " So this is an issue with the usb.

Can't Copy From A Usb Drive

I can copy files from a cd why can't i copy from a usb drive? I know this is hard to believe but i'm having even more trouble with windows 7 security than i had with vista. At least with vista it was easy to turn off uac. So far with windows 7 i have only succeeded in turning down message levels so i get fewer messages for each failure.

I am trying to copy files from a windows 7 desktop to a usb drive and then to a different machine's windows 7 desktop. The target win 7 os say's i don't have permission even though i'm using an admin user account not a standard user account. The files on the original desktop were copied their from a cd without any problems being encountered.

Cannot Rename Folders On Usb Drive

I open my usb drive from my computer, add a new folder, right click it and select rename. After typing the new name, i hit wnter, then, wham!, W7 shuts down and reboots. This is happening with all usb drives i put into the pc. Have i missed a setting or something in w7 that might be causing this?
When i whack the usb into my old pc running xp, no problems, i can add, rename folders no problem at all. Just w7 won't do it.

Unable To Access Shared Folders On Drive Connected Via Usb

I recently set up a home network using the new linksys e3000 router, which provides a usb port for drive sharing, backup, and media streaming. I'm getting a message that says the folder access is denied, and i should contact the administrator for access. Fter spending several hours with linksys support, i was unable to solve the initial problem, which is to get full control over the files and folders on this drive. We did the following without success:remapped the drive. Made sure i was logged in as administrator.

Made sure the workgroup name was consistent. Ttempted to assign full control with permissions. This was particularly strange. When i set permissions to full control for any group or user, after clicking apply windows would attempt to set new permissions, but then the folder would go right back to having limited permissions. I was unable to edit. I'm assuming this is where the problem is. Ny idea why i can't change the permissions on these network folders?

Upgrade To A New Empty Hard Drive

I have a pre order of windows 7 professional upgrade coming when released. I am getting my inspiron 8600 ready, 2 gb memory installed, and i have a new 160 gb hard drive to replace the 40 gb original drive. My plan was to install the new drive and install the upgrade using my original xp install disc from dell as a qualifier. It sounds like i cannot do this based on other threads. Can i install the dell original xp on the new hard drive (basic install) and go to the upgrade disk from there? I understand i will have to reinstall software and documents, etc. After.

Empty Backup Folder On External Hard Drive

This is regarding windows 7 home premium. I recently discovered the files created on my external hard drive by windows automated backup utility are empty. The backup utility continues to apparently create backups: the external drive lights up to indicate activity when the "backup in progress" symbol appears in the notification area of the taskbar.control panel>system and security>backup and restore shows a backup size of 92. 24 gb and verifies the backup location as the external drive.

The external drive itself appears to be working fine: i can move other files, such as outlook backups, to the drive and verify their file size. There are two backup-related file folders on the external drive, one with the name of the computer and the other named windowsimagebackup, which was created about two minutes after the first. But both are empty.

Cannot Restore Backed Up Files From Usb Drive

Bought new pc with win 7. Backed up to external usb western digital hdd 1tb. A week later hdd on computer crashed and was replaced. Plug in external usb and it is no longer recognized. Try on two other computers, same problem. (Not entirely unexpected as this seems to happen all the time with external usb hdd's). Download program "recover my files v4 standard", it sees the files and i copy the backup files to my new hdd.

Problem is when i double click the backup file instead of invoking the "restore" functionality it simply treats this file as a folder and drills down to the next level. And that my friends is my problem, are there any attributes i need to set to get the restore functionality to work for the backed up files?

Copying Files To A Usb Drive Stops

I have a windows 7 (home premium 64 bit) laptop and two usb drives (one 16gb kingston data traveler and another 4 gb cruzer). I also have an xp laptop. On the xp laptop i can use both the usb drives to copy files of any size. Both are partitioned ntfs.

But on the win 7 laptop only the 4gb cruzer is working without a problem. Whenever i try to copy a file to this 16gb drive from the win 7 the copying starts of without a problem but stops somewhere in between. It does not proceed after wards. I tried a number of solutions including a hot fix suggested in this forum and still having the same problem. If i am copying a very small file (few mbs) it can finish copying without any problem.

Problem Transferring Files Using Usb Drive

I am trying to use windows easy transfer via usb to transfer files and some programs new computer: i have a 16gb flash drive. When i try to d/l win easy trans file from desktop old computer to the flash drive, dialog box comes up saying 'too large file - open program and delete some files  or change to other program. I can not seem to make either work. Any suggestions?

The machine is working and many of my programs ie; office, quicken, etc are also working, however a number of other programs are not. I thought getting a print out via windows easy transfer would be useful in determining other changes needed. The computer builder may have transferred over as much possible via a hard wire between two computers, i can not find out as as he will be out of the country for a year. (In national guard, guess where he will be for a year!)

Question: if he transferred most over via hard wire drive to drive, can i still use windows easy transfer to check out what is left? Any suggestion?

Usb Drive Takes Long Time When Sorting Files In Directory

I have several external usb drives on my machine. Some of the folders on those drives contain several thousand files, the default is for them to be in name order. Fine. But i quite often want to rearrange them by date, everytime i do this i get the semi-transparent green progress bar at the top of the folder but it seems to take an age to complete.

On previous versions of windows clicking on the column you wanted files sorted by made the sort almost instant. Each time i go back to the folder i have to wait all over again. I thought i had added the folders to the library etc to make searching and sorting easier. Am i doing/not doing something stupid?

Files And Folders

I installed window 7 last october. Running windows 7 home premium. Really love it. Recently, i went to access some old saved email messages i have saved in a folder, in my documents. When i go to open up (any) file that is a . Eml file from my documents, an outlook 'new message' window opens with a shortcut link at the top of my new message of that file. I click to open it and nothing happens. I try right-clicking the file within my documents folder using 'open with. ' and a window opens with the only option to select or recommended programs is internet explorer.

I tried using this option and the same occurs, outlook new message opens up with the icon shortcut. I try right-clicking /open with/ and browse and ( this is where i think i went wrong!) I browse and select microsoft office/office12/and select the outlook icon for the outlook application, click save. Then the window of 'open with' choose the program you want to use to open this file: and i select microsoft office outlook, the 'ok" with the same result - - - an new outlook message with the shortcut appears and i am back in that same loop with a file i cannot open.

I only have hundred of these . Eml files that i now cannot access. Please someone help me with the solution to what (i am sure) is an easy, but unknown resolution to my issue!

Files And Folders Disappeared

I was organizing a file that i had hundreds of mods for a game. Everything was organized and orderly. All zipped and placed. So now i clicked on the file that had the version number 1. 4 i had all the files under. I selected properties, hidden, read only was already checked and then i selected apply ( i thought that this would show all hidden files). Then i clicked apply.

The computer went through all of those files as the green line smoothly showed the progress of the computer and they all disappeared. Gone just like that. I tried to go back , i tried to restore previous version of the file, but there are no more mod files they are all gone. Please tell me that they were not deleted. They were not in the recycle bin. In in some archive and can be restored?

Lost Files & Folders

I have been in the process of migrating from win xp to win 7. Whilst installing the new operating software, i transferred all my files to my laptop, as a temporary store, within the shared folder, so i could easily access it across the network.

Once i had complete the win 7 installation, i connected up to the local network to look for the files on the laptop, which i found no problem. So, from win 7 i dragged the folder from the laptop shared folder containing 2gb of data, to the win 7 desktop. Whilst transferring, i accidentally pressed cancel, now i can't find my files on either of the two machines! All i am left with is the original folder with 4 single files on the win 7 desktop.

I can't find these files anywhere, having used an undelete recovery, i cannot see the files on the laptop hard drive or anywhere. Can anybody please make any suggestions?

Not Enough Files / Folders Indexed

i am working on a windows 7 virtual machine on a macbook pro. I just upgraded the virtual machine from windows xp to 7 and was trying to search my document and email files and not getting the answers i thought were probably there. I use search not just to find files, but also to remember what i was working on on a specific date. I started to read the windows help info and went to indexing options. It said that i had 87, 000 some odd files/folders.

I added the "add in" that allows you to index network drives (which is how the virtual machine sees my primary hard drive). The drive is actually on the mac side of the machine, but the virtual machine considers it a network drive. I checked the network drive as being one to index, checked the box to index file properties only (as opposed to properties and contents) and asked the index to rebuild. I also went in to control panel, and windows programs and features and checked the box to enable indexing service (it wasn't checked before and yet indexed 87, 000 items).

I then restarted the virtual machine. It only indexed 20, 000 some odd items and says indexing is complete. I would have expected the index to increase by 55, 000 items/files/ folders. I have seen the forum threads where mike mc found that anti virus programs were preventing indexing. I don't currently have any anti-virus program running. Is there anything else that can prevent indexing?  What can i do to get this working?Carol

Manage Files And Folders Separately

In win 7 explorer, under "view, folder options", the option to manage (html) files and folders as separate files is gone. I've tried the registry tweak (i.e. , Add dword nofilefolderconnection to hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentversionexplorer) but it does not work for me! I tried values of 0, 1, and 2. In addition to adding the key to "advanced" and "advancedfolder" under the explorer key.

I also heard that this option showed up in xp only after ms office was installed. So i busted out an old copy of ms works 2002 and installed word. It didn't work. I'm not about to spend another penny buying another copy of office just to fix this issue.

I'm finding the "manage as one file" option to be intolerable. Please help before i give up in disgust and install linux.

Zipped Files And Folders Changing Format

When i receive zipped files or folders in emails or on discs, they show as explorer zip files without the usual 'zippered' icon. A right click has no result. When i left click, i get multiple blank windows repeatedly trying to open. The only way to get past this is to power down my laptop. Very frustrating. I have spent enough time searching other forums but i'm not program savvy so i don't want to try to fix it without understanding the problem.

.kmz Files Downloaded As Compressed Folders

I've been messing around with . Kmz files. If i double click on the kmz file on my local hard drive, it opens in google earth as i'd expect and right click->open with only has google earth in the options. So on my local hard drive, . Kmz files are working great. However, if i click on a link like this http://caiels.com/local/ivybridge. Kmz. I get a dialogue showing a file name of ivybridge.zip and it tries to open in 'compressed folders'.

Also if i link from http://maps.google.com/?Q=http://caiels.com/local/ivybridge. Kmz and click the 'view in google earth' option, it downloads as a zip file. So i hope i'm asking this question in the correct place. Why does explorer work fine with kmz, yet internet explorer treats them as a zip file? And is there anything i can put in the link to force it to download as . Kmz and therefore open in google earth?

Cannot Copy Large File Between Usb Drives

Using windows 7. Have two 1tb ntfs drives and i'm trying to copy a 600g music folder from drive g to drive e. Original file from a third drive was put trough a tag editor and saved to drive g successfully. Have tried copy/paste, drag and drop and send to options. The drag and select show 13k items selected but when released over the intended folder, the copy files window pops up then disappears. Trying break into smaller transfers, was able to transfer half the "a"'s (716 folders) then was only able to transfer single folders.

There are some files where the location was lost in the renaming process or folders that got duplicated which show up as conflicts or options to skip copy or merge two folders in the file copy process at the end of the transfer. I am able to transfer files between the drives, just not this large folder. Western digital support says it's an operating system issue. I acquired the original files from four separate drives  by drag and drop recently with no issues. In compiling all the folders, maybe some errors have crept in, but i can't figure out how to find and eliminate them.

Briefcase Change Sync Copy In Drive

I have been using briefcase for years. I have the original files on the flash drive i wear on a cord around my neck. This particular style of jewelry brands me a geek and proud of it. I have on my desktop computer a set of briefcases. Every morning when i get to my office i sync the files on which i have been working. One touch, it's great. I have on my laptop at home a set of briefcases. Every evening when i get home i plug into my laptop i synch the files on which i have been working. One touch, it's great.

The only part that isn't great is the russian roulette i play with drive numbers. When i set up my new office computers i had several things plugged into the usb ports and the briefcase assined the synch to drive g: instead of drive e: so now i get to my office and plug in my flash drive. I change the drive to e: and synch the briefcases project 1, 3, & 4. Then i change the drive to f: and sync briefcases project 2 & 6. Then i change the drive to g: and sync briefcase project 5.

Yes, i can delete all the briefcases and start over - which is what i will do if i can't find a direct solution. But i would really prefer to finally get some control over the "sync copy in" column.

Also, why the "briefcase is in use on another computer" message. It's not in use on another computer; i am trying to use it myself. It is extremely annoying. If it was in the process of synching i could understand, but it's just sitting there, synced, waiting for me. The flash drive has been disconnected. I should not have to shut down windows explorer to use the files just because it's a briefcase instead of a file folder. Is there any way to stop this message from popping up every time i try to access a file - besides shutting down windows explorer.

Copy Slow To Or From External Hard Drive

I have a 64 bit i7 960 processor running windows 7 home premium when i try to copy a file to or from a usb connected 1 terabyte ext drive the copy starts out at 40mb a sec and degrades down to 2 or3 mb a second some times it drops below 1 mb a sec. I copy large video files so this is really affecting my work. I also have 2 internal 1 tb hard-drives and the copy between those work at great speed( 40 to 70 mb a sec)so far i have turned off rdc. Reloaded the the usb drivers, formatted the drive. Started in safe mode, installed teracopy. Turned off file indexing. Nothing works. The drive works great on my xp machine.

Cannot Read / Copy Jpg From External Drive

I just upgraded to windows 7 premium 64bit. Then i started to copy jpegs from my external hard drive to my new pc internal hard drive. This external hard drive was managed by xp previously.

Suddenly windows 7 complained. It tells me that the file or path does not exist. With some investigation i found that all jpegs larger than 1mb cannot be read or copied. Smaller files are fine. Then i tried to copy my latest photos from my camera's sd card. Same problem. However, windows 7 then asked if i wanted to fix a problem on the card. I decided not to and "imported" the images by choosing it as one of the options in the pop-up box. It then worked.

So manually trying to read, open, thumbnail preview or copy any jpeg larger than 1mb does not work at all only since i have moved from xp to windows 7 64bit. Why is this? How can i solve the problem?

Error When Trying To Copy/paste File From External Drive

I have a new computer with a windows 7 professional 64-bit operating system (500gb drive; 8gb ram). I have two external drives, each of which has a vpc on it. I use the vpcs for training purposes. They are virtually (no pun intended) identical, so one functions as a backup if something goes wrong with the other. One vpc has problems, so i want to overwrite it with the . Vmc and . Vhd files from the other vpc.

I've done this before (on my previous computer, which had windows xp-pro). I successfully copied the . Vmc file and the hard disk 2 . Vhd file, but it won't copy the hard disk 1 . Vhd file. I get an error message (error 0x8007045d) that says there is an i/o device error. How can i fix this so that it will copy the file?
