Windows Applied Some Other Form Of Compatibility Settings To Program

Windows told me some "other" form of compatibility settings were applied to a program, what, where and why? I've ran the program ultramon 64bit for several weeks on my windows 7 x64 system. It's been running fine but one day when i resumed from suspend it crashed and windows popped up a dialog telling me the program wasn't fully compatible in some sense and that windows had automatically applied some form of compatibility setting to the program which would be used the next time it was started. I was also told i couldn't change the setting or something in the line of that.

Now the point is that two programs crashed when i resumed and this probably happened because i resumed very quickly after suspending, i know this can happen when i do that, so there probably is absolutely nothing wrong with the program and it probably doesn't need any "special" setting like this.

I'd like to know what kind of setting this "hidden" compatibility setting is, where it is, what it does and how i change it. Some people recommended me a system restore but i'd rather not do this as i will have to redo some installations etc. I'd rather just remove the compatibility setting but i can't find any info anywhere on what the setting is, what it does or where it is. Sorry for not having more information about the name of the setting, the contents of the dialog etc, i had to close it to proceed with working. Hope you still know what i am talking about here. It's not the normal "compatibility tab" settings, it's something else.

Compatibility Troubleshooter Unable To Save Settings

I am fighting to get the program cd for my online course to work. I finally was told by their tech support that the compatibility setting should be win98 and not xp which i had on my old computer. After using this setting the program worked fine! But the next time i opened it i needed to redo the compatibility troubleshooter.

I tried to save the settings but it came up with an error: incompatible application! Is this because this is on a cd and it can't be changed? Is there anyway to do something about this. Or if i am going to have to open the compatibility troubleshooter every time where is this located so that i won't have to go into help and dig for it.

I would like to put the folders in alphabetical order and have the misc. Files last. It was easy to do on all the other window's programs but i can't seem to find a way with windows 7.

I have the game civilization ii. It ran fine on my old windows lap top. When i tried to run setup on my new windows 7 computer i got the message "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. "

When i tried to run the program using the program compatibility utility nothing happens.

Program Compatibility In Win 7 X64

Cannot Disable Program Compatibility Assistant

I'm hoping someone can provide me with a way to disable the program compatibility assistant. I had this same problem during the beta, but of course during beta testing i was using windows 7 ultimate. First off let me begin by pointing out that i am running using windows 7 home premium.

That said, i realize this means that the most common solution, using local group policy editor to disable the program compatibility assistant will not work, as home premium does not include gpedit. Msc.

Now this is the confusing part, at least for me. I found an alternative solution specifically meant to address this limitation. I was directed to access services, and upon locating program compatibility assistant service, stop the service and then disable it (via properties for that service). I did exactly that. It's stopped and the startup type is "disabled". I even rebooted.

Now here is the part that confuses me. It still comes up. How can it do that when i have the service stopped? Is it another aspect of windows 7 security i'm unaware of that needs to be disabled?

As a note, when i attempted to install the software in question i did choose to "run as administrator", just in case, and that still had no benefit. If anyone knows what i should do, including instructions on editing my registry, let me know.

Mastercook Program Compatibility Issue

I have recently bought a new computer with windows 7 installed. I have one old program called mastercook from about 1994 which always ran on my previous computers 95, 98, 2000, and xp. This program will not run on windows 7. I tried the compatibility wizard indicating the program ran on xp but it will not open to test. When i copy the program to the windows 7 hard drive it indicates the program s an adobe file. In fact, it opens in xp directly to the screen and needs no other program (i.e. Adobe, word, etc. To open it. ) Any suggestions?

Uninstall Program Installed Using Compatibility Mode

I have been a satisfied user of adobe photoshop album 2. 0 for years and have a large library of photos and associated information that i wanted to migrate to my new windows 7 pro machine. I found that although the program would install and run in compatibility mode, the programs database is incompatible with win7. I have now installed the program in xp mode and things are finally running smoothly.

One problem: i would like to uninstall the copy of photoshop album which was originally installed on the win7 operating system. When i try to uninstall in the control panel/programs window, i get the error: this operating system is not supported and the uninstall shield wizard shuts down. I have searched for an uninstall setup.exe for this program and cannot locate one. Is there a way to use compatibility mode to run the uninstall wizard?

It is always associated with the following event in the system event viewer:

Services Settings

I have been trying to maximize the performance of my rig since i only have 4 gigs of ram and my ancient 1 year old mobo can hardly cut it with windows 7 (sarcasm intended). So, i have been fiddling with services but i occasionally mess things up and i end up painstakingly trying to reset those service back to their defaults, one at a time. How hard could it be for the services panel to have a ‘default" or "reset" button? So when people like myself (i’m not very smart) mess up a setting, we can simply click "reset" and the ole’, comfy, default services fix my screwup. Are there other ways to do this other than the aforementioned "by hand" method. Software? Utilities?

Regionalization Settings

It appears that when i change the regionalization settings to prc china, all menus become chinese regardless of how i configure it. In xp, i was able to change this and the menus remained in english. My problem is that with visual basic 6 programs, the text is not unicode. In order to read chinese in my program, i need to maintain english menus but support chinese as big 5, etc and not unicode. This effects microsoft sapi function for foreign languages. Does anyone know how to configure this?

Setting Live Mail Program As Default Program

I am trying to set windows 7 live mail program as a default program. It does not show up as an option on my "set default programs list". I know that i have it because i am using the program. Where else can it be? I asked this question earlier in the context of trying to attach smaller picture files to an email. I followed the written instructions in the help section and those of the person who replied to my earlier question(ramesh). They both said to select live mail from the default programs list-but as i said before it is not on the list. Do you have any other suggestions?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Keyboard Character Settings

I just today picked up a new acer laptop with lots of bells and whistles, including a pre-loaded copy of windows 7 home premium. I asked for professional but i digress. My question is this:

The character settings for my keyboard appear to be stuck on french candian and none of the keys are working as i need them to. (At least that seems to be the problem as far as what i could find in windows help states. ) For example, to capitalize a word i have to turn on the caps lock button just for the first letter. If i want to use the @ symbol, as you would commonly need to for things like typing in your email address - i have to first go into to the character map, select the right symbol and copy it, then paste it into whatever i am working on. Shift 2 brings up this - " (a quote symbol) - instead of the @ symbol.

I have gone into the language bar, selected the us standard option - and have pressed apply, then ok, then checked to see if it works. The file path is showing that it has been changed to us standard, but it is still typing everything in a canadian french keyboard layout! I have repeated this function several times, and tried every way i could think of to find an answer in the windows help menu.

I am way behind in technology so if anyone can help, can you please do so in really simple clear terms? (Even that question mark had to be copied and pasted. In fact i've had to open up the wordpad to write this, then copy and paste the whole thing here in my plea for help!) Again, if you can help please use very simple steps that even an inept user like me can figure out.

Separate Settings For Two Monitors

I have a laptop computer with its built-in lcd display. I have added an external monitor, also an lcd unit, through the vga port on the laptop. In windows 7, with the screen resolution -> multiple displays set to "duplicate these displays" ((i.e. , The same thing shows on both the internal and external displays), is it possible to have each monitor set up separately in terms of the display model, resolution, etc. ?

If not, only one monitor can be optimized at a time, either the laptop lcd or the external monitor. I realize that i can adjust these settings for each monitor as long as the multiple displays setting is "extend these displays. " When i have this field set to "duplicate these displays, " the display value is locked on "1/2. Multiple monitors, " with no way to adjust the two displays individually.

Excessive Security Settings

After installing windows 7 home premium, it has apparently decided that i am no longer the administrator of my machine. I cannot access links in office, nor can i make changes to certain documents in word - they are apparently all read-only. I continually get the default message (something to the effect of) "this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator", whether it's attempting to utilize links in message in outlook, or whether trying to change or save documents in word.

Also, i no longer have access to certain folders on my hard drive. There have been other issues, but i have slowly been able to resolve some of them. I have already tried multiple attempts with the standard microsoft help desk, but they have been no help, and have since refused to answer any of my subsequent questions, and it has now been more than two months since the last time they responded to me.

Cannot Change Backup Settings

I set up windows backup to my drive h: passport, but passport wasn't big enough. I want to backup to "networkmybookworld1public". Now when i try to change the backup settings, i only see h: passport or the dvd drive as options, with the message "windows can't find the disk or network location where backup is being saved". I can't browse to or add networkmybookworld1public. It won't let me change or delete any backup settings, or add or point to "networkmybookworld1public.

It also won't let me 'setup backup' i guess since it was already set up once. How do i delete the original setup so that i can re-setup backup? How do i select or point to networkmybookworld1public? When i go to computer, i see network with mybookworld1 under it.

Settings.ini Is Being Used By Another Process

My gadgets aren't working, neither is firefox. I have a problem with my sidebar, as-well, as a lot of others have on this forum and a lot of others. Every time i start up my computer this message is shown. I tried a clean boot and that took care of the error message, but when i tried running the sidebar it popped up. Besides that my firefox, keeps claiming that another firefox is already running which, from my point of view, doesn't make any sense.

This seems to have started after i tried connecting windows media center to my xbox 360 and there was an error. In searching the internet, i have found that quite a few people have posted this kind of problem, several after a snafu in setting up their xbox 360 for media center, but there seem to be no answers to be found.

Proxy Settings In Ie8

I have both firefox and ie8 and my proxy settings work on firefox but in ie8 i am not able to connect. I go to tools->options->connections->lan settings->here automatically detect settings is already selected and i also select use proxy server and i give the address and port and in advanced i select for all.

Then when i type in any address like gmail.com and press enter a pop up window comes with the name 'windows security' and asks for a username and password. Now even in firefox it ask for a password and username and i give mine and i get internet access but when i give the same password in ie8 it doesn't connect.

Now my main problem is that things like mcafee and infinite other things also are not connecting. So things like updates and other things don't happen.

So i would either like a solution for ie8 or any other way in which windows doesn't depend on ie8 connection settings and uses firefox settings to connect.

Changing Bios Settings

I have a custom built computer that has been running the windows 7 release candidate. I've been trying to install the full version but have not successfully been able to boot from the cd/dvd drive. There are two options to prompt the screen before windows starts either press delete for bios settings or f12 for boot menu. First off, i'm not sure which one i'm supposed to so i tried both. When i went to the boot menu the screen was frozen and i could not select the boot first device. What am i doing wrong?

Picture Import Settings

I want to change the import settings for my canon camera when importing photos using windows 7. I had already managed to do this once but want to adjust the settings again. However, when i connect my camera to my pc, it automatically starts importing photos based on current settings with no option to change.

The above is from another thread regarding the same problem i have. The dialog box with "import settings" flashes, then goes away before you can make changes. The person above was given a link to a boilerplate answer that doesn't address the problem.
