Size Of Windows Image Backup

I have win7 ultimate and i have 26 gb of data to create an image from. I made an image to the hard drive which was about 20 gb. I then immediately made another image to a blu-ray disk but the size of the image is only 10 gb on the blu-ray. Why does the same image vary so greatly in size depending on where you save it. Can i rely on the 10 gb image to be able to restore everything properly? Additionally 6 gb of compression seems about right but 16 gb of compression seems too good to be true.

Ie8 Desktop Icon Image Size

I am having problems with the size of the image within a desktop short cut icon that was created with ie8. Desktop icons created by other programs are okay. I have already tried going a restore and that did not work. I have done a system repair / upgrade using the install disks and that did not correct the problem. I have tried the ctrl / scroll the mouse wheel to change the overall size of the icon but nothing changes the actual i made within the icon itself. Created a new user profile and still the same.

Now here is the really odd thing and that is i have 16 desktop shortcut icons on my screen and 15 of the 16 are incorrect and 1 is the proper. I have looked at the registry to try and find a link and come up with nothing.

There has to be some way to correct this as at one time the images with the desktop icons were all correct. Also looked high and low through all folders for a possible location of the icon images and come up with nothing. It is as though the actual image within the icon is pulling from the favicon and not a larger image.

The system is a 64 bit and using ie8 in 64 bit is not possible in the adobe flash does not support 64 bit and you spend all your time clicking the mouse to accept images when ever you go to web pages.

System Image Restore When Size Of C: Drive Changed

I have so far have had great success in restoring from system image (as opposed from system restore) for my windows 7 ultimate x64. Some small clarifications:1. On day 1, i make a system image of c: os (windows 7 ultimate) and system reserved partition (100mb). Say on that day, the c: was 100 gb in total size. 2. On any day after that, i modify the c: partition size to something different from 100gb. This could be because i am reinstalling windows 7 and thought to change the partition size or want to change the partition sizes or any other reason. Say, the c: is now 90gb or 110 gb or whatever, but not 100gb which it was on the day i made the system image.

Suppose, i am not happy with the result or feel the need to abort this install, and go back to my system image. 3. Will system image restore now work, considering that the c: is no longer the same size as on the day the image was made?4. Finally, windows 7 makes a system image called 'windowsimagebackup' or something. Do subsequent imaging overwrite this completely if i choose the same external hard drive i made the first image from.

Second, i have seen that if i change the name of the image say to 'windowsimagebackup290510', windows system repair disk no longer recognizes it. What is the way out. I basically want one partition with different system images say 'windowsimagebackup290510', 'win. Backup050610' and so on. But windows 7 restoring has failed for me when i rename the image file?

Win 7 Backup File Size Exceeds

I'm using the win 7 backup to backup files and system images and i'm running into an issue with space usage. I've selected "let windows choose" option for "what do you want to back up?", And "let windows manage the space used for backup history (33. 20 gb max)".

However, when i look at the actual space being used, it's reporting 20. 3 gb for data file backup and 62. 95 gb for the system image - way more than 33. 20 gb. Any idea what's going on?  And how do i set it to automatically keep my total backup space usage in check?

Backup / Create Image Fails

Windows 7 backup/create image fails because it's trying to backup both the system drive and a boot drive that is fat32. The system automatically picks both my system (local) windows 7 drive and my boot drive (another drive i dual boot from) to create an image from. Since image creation cannot be done on fat32 drives the image creation fails with a notice on how to convert the fat32 drive to ntfs (which is not what i want to do).

Restoring From Earlier Backup Image

I have tried to find the answer to my query in the various answers on here but have got bogged down with some of the technicalities, so though it might be easier to ask someone how i achieve what i need!I have been using win7's backup and restore for a few months now - i do an automatic backup every week to an external drive. I understand that my system image is backed up incrementally.

My questions are:am i able to restore and image from a date earlier than the last backup - i created my initial image after installing all my required applications but would not necessarily want to restore everything that was on my drive when it was last backed up - there may be things i no longer need - demo programs etc or, corrupt files which have caused problems, hence the need to do a restore. Hope that makes sense! If i am able to do the above, how might i ensure that the earliest image is preserved and not replaced should my external drive space be used up.

How To Restore A Previous Backup / Image?

Ok so i use some programs that were not compatible with windows 7 that came on my new computer. After upgrading to professional and trying xp mode (too slow) i decided to just downgrade to xp and deal with it. However. I didn't realize that all the drivers for my computer are not compatible with windows xp so nothing works. I need to go back to windows 7. I created a "backup disc" which i assumed would be sufficient if i did need to go back. However, when trying to "restore" it says that windows doesn't recognize the backup files or something like that. I assume because it wasn't out yet. So. With that, no factory discs how can i get 7 back on my computer with out buying something that i already had?

Backup Image - Will Programs Copied As Is Without Having To Reinstall ?

In backup for windows 7 the term "system image" is used. Does this mean that the many programs on my computer will be copied as is without having to reinstall each? Looking to purchase version of windows 7 that will do a real backup copying all programs without having to reinstall after possible crash.

System Image & Backup Extremely Slow

I started running windows 7 backup, including a system image 2 days ago. It's only up to 17% completed now. I am running windows 7 professional, 64bit. The internal hd is 2 tb, 8 gb ram & amd phenom ii x3 processor, 2. 5 ghz. I am backing up to a firewire seagate free agent external hd. The mainboard is msi 770-c45. I have set the power option to never turn off the monitor or hd. I have tried other imaging software such as shadowprotect and rebit.

When i run those 2 together i get bsod's. Since the system image and backup features are in windows 7, i thought this might be a better way to make a disk image and backup since they are integrated into the os. But at this rate, the system image and backup may never complete. Any suggestions?
Oh one more piece of information. The c drive that i am attempting to backup has 686gb of used space.

Note: when i had windows xp with about the same amount of used disk space and used shadowprotect or acronis true image, the disk image would complete overnight. This is a new computer so there's no issue of upgrading from xp.

Does Win 7 Image Backup Work Fine For A Ssd?

We are getting new hp envy pcs with solid state drive (ssd) as the primary c: drive, and with regular hdd for the second drive we'll use for daily backups (no network backups for images). I want to know if we will have any problems in case of a crash, using our backup image on the hdd to produce a new ssd working c: drive. For example, acronis does have some such problems; see http://kb. Acronis.com/content/2699 and http://forum. Acronis.com/forum/7687 . Will windows 7 image backups have such problems?

Backup Create System Image On External / Network Drive

I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit and i have 2 internal hdds plus a networked windows home server. When i go to backup and select create system image i am only shown the option of backing up the system drive (c drive) and not the other hdd (d drive). And as destination for the backup of the system drive i am presented with no option other than the d drive. I am not shown the option of an external drive or the whs network drive. Apparently the option of an external or network drive should be available as long as they are ntfs formatted.could it be that these options are not available for the home premium edition?

Backup And Restore - Windows Can't Find Restore Image

I created an image backup with windows 7. It created a large vhd file and appeared to complete correctly. I copied the image to my thumb drive and tried to do a restore. I can find the thumb drive and browse it and all the files are there but if i try to do a restore it doesn't find the restore image. I also tried putting it on a network drive - it can't find it there even though i point it to the share it is in. I've tried using a restore cd, as well as installing windows and using the recovery in control panel.

The folder structure is as follows
Windowsimagebackup\computername
Under that folder are three folders
Backup 2012-07-15 232717
Catalog
Sppmetadatacache
Metadataid

It seems odd there is no obvious way to just say this is the vhd - right here in this folder - use it and restore.

System Image Reports Two Boot Drives To Image

I have a sata (boot drive) and an ide drive in my win 7 pro 64 bit machine. Is there any way to remove the old boot partition on my ide from the list of drives to image w/ sys image? I can understand the c: part (sata/boot) and the "system reserved" but i don't want to image the d: part (1st part on old ide xp pro boot drive that has 84gb on it that i don't want to bkup). Funny thing is that the ide drive doesn't even show up on the boot sequence in bios. I really don't want to reformat in case something happens to my new sys i can still run xp on my old one (i lost my xp install disk).

I just want to leave it out of the sys image list. Theres no way to remove it from the list without reformatting the d: part. (Old boot drive)? Can i possibly make the d: part. Non bootable without running the xp installation on it and make it bootable again later?Maybeny help removing it from the list would be greatly appreciated!

System Image Recovery Can't Find System Image

I am trying to restore a backup system image to my repaired pc. It is wiped clean. I have the "repair disc windows 7 64 bit" that i created in windows 7. Using windows 7 backup i have a system image backup on an external wd essentials 1tb usb hard drive. I insert the repair disc and start the system. Get to system recovery options. I have the external hard disk with the system backup image connected. Select system image recovery option. Says "windows cannot find a system image on this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final dvd from a backup set and click retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options.

Retry gives me the same message. Tried starting with drive attached, not attached, same result. Click cancel. Next option selected is "select a system image. " No system image listed. Hit refresh, still nothing. Top of screen says "click advanced to add a network location or install a driver for a backup device if it does not show up in the list below. "  I click on the advanced tab.

Option to "search for a system image on the network" or "install a driver. " I select install a driver. Find the right driver for the wd essential hard drive (disk.sys and partmgr.sys) and when i click on them i get "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "  Click ok. Can't find how to load these drivers i am being asked for. Funny thing is that on the screen where i search for driver i can see the wd essential hard drive connected to the system. I can also see the system image files but when i click on them i get the same error message, "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "

Win 7 Virtual Xp Backup By Microsoft Backup & Restore

Windows 7 virtual xp backup by microsoft backup & restore - does it backup "both" c drives? I am running microsoft windows 7 professional with virtual windows xp. Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Size Errors

I was going to leave teh computer for a while so i set it to sleep to conserve energy. When i returned to teh computer, i found that (when i logged back on), the size of things had seemed to change. (The icons on screen and many of the windows i opened, including aol, were much bigger). I went onto the control panel, on appearance and personalization, and tried to set teh screen size back to small(default), however, the computer seemed to think that it was already on small. I managed to get the icons back to small and some programs are normal, but other are huge windows. Can anyone help me get the size back to normal please?

C: Drive Size Is Becoming Large

I used an upgrade disc to upgrade to w7 from vista (clean install) 2 days ago and the size of c drive (w7) is 116. 52 gb! What is causing it to be so large ? Shouldn't it only occupy 25 gb or so ? The windows old file has been deleted. So what is causing the upgrade installation of w7 to take 116. 62 gb ? ( That is not counting the 14. 65 gb recovery partition the system partition  alone is 116. 62 gb. In total the upgrade took an entire 131. 27 gb. What is wrong?

File Size Issue

I'm confused. I'm trying to write video files to a dvd. I use sony movie studio 9 pe. It compiles at 5. 4 gb. Yes. It's a long movie i made. To fit it on a 4. 7 gb dvd i used a program to "shrink" it. I now comes in at 4. 2 gb on the hard drive. I can't use sony dvd software to burn it because it says the size is 5. 4 gb when the dvd holds only 4. 7. I know why that is happening. So i' good there. To get around that i tried to use nero 8, it says the file is 4. 8. Again over the 4. 7 gb limit. So i tried using the bundled win 7 dvd burning software. It says the size is 4. 2 and the dvd can only hold 4. 3. Um. What?

I'm on win 7 professional 64 bit on a intel i7 920 processor. Is the 64 bit playing around with the file size? I'm new to 64 bit stuff. I have the latest firmware update installed for the dvd/cd drive. All programs are to their latest releases. I'm stumped.

Window Size Problems

I have the new acer time-line 14" pc installed with windows 7. Recently, the windows size has changed, and i don't know how to fix it! The problem is that the window (to internet-sites, or any other program), are much bigger than before. And is -in a way- partially hidden by the start-line.
To explain better, here's a photo:

http://i46. Tinypic.com/ipuus9.jpg

So you see, at facebook (as an example), is the line of applications, chat and notifications quite hidden. It's not the start-line's fault. Nothing wrong about that. Can anyone help me fix this?

Opening Browser Size

When i open a new browser on ie8 it opens into 2" x 13" window, when it used to open into around a 5"x3" size give or take. This is only an issue in a new browser window or a link, not a tab. When it opens into the 2x13 size obviously i can't see any content until i open it to full size. How do i reset it to open to a size that allows me to see content before opening it to full size.

Hopefully this makes sense.
I'm using vista, ie8 on a laptop.

Print Job Size Issue

We've got a very strange issue. We have a page containing plain text, some of it in tables and some in css layed out divs, and 2 small images (the 2 images have a combined size of 11. 5k). If we print it under vista it produces a 391k print file, which is roughly what would be expected, but if we print the same page under windows 7 it produces a 293mb print file. Obviously this may, once windows 7 gets a wider install-base, start to impact on our network performance. Why would it be doing this?

Window Size Control Issue

My flat screen tv which i also use as a computer monitor via hdmi runs slightly under-scanned and for various reasons i don't want to change that. This means that i don't have visual access to the top rhs and bottom rhs of maximized windows. This makes it difficult to reduce the size of maximized screens. I have had a good look through the help and haven't been able to find a fix.

I thought i was close when i found "windows logo key +shift+up arrow" and discovered that the undocumented "windows logo key + shift + down arrow" also worked . But if the window was maximized then "windows logo key + shift + down arrow" directly minimized the window and didn't reduce the size. Lso i find that if i right click at the top of a window i get a menu that includes a 'size' option but it doesn't seem to work on my stock standard win 7 x64 i5-661 computer using the intel on chip video (gigabyte h57 matx motherboard).

I get a 'move' icon but it doesn't seem to do anything. Everything else, including aero, seems to work. I haven't been able to find any help on this command. By the way it's difficult trying to search help about windows in windows. Is there any easy way to use the keyboard to reduce the size of, but not minimize, a window please? If not are there any other workarounds that spring to mind?

Website Text Size Very Small

I got a new dell laptop with windows 7. For some reason, all websites appear with text in a really small font size. I've tried increasing font size and even set it to appear in largest text size. The problem is, then it's way too big and looks cartoonish. I also set it to make pages appear in 125% and 150%, which is also way too big and distorts the page.

I also lowered page resolution, but that doesn't work because the system has it set at the max, which is the suggested setting. Any ideas as to why windows 7 and internet explorer and firefox looks so different than xp or vista, etc?
