File Access Permission

I am moving from an older laptop running xp to a new one which came pre-loaded with windows 7. I am unable to access a folder with all of my previous emails in various sub-folders entitled c:usercomputer administratorlocal settingsapplication datamicrosoftoutlookoutlook. Pst unless i log in as administrator. I went into security under properties in 7 and gave my non-administrator user account full access, yet when i try to open the above folder i am still denied access.

I suppose it has something to do with the "computer administrator" in the file name. How do i go about re-naming this file so it is accessible to the non-administrator user, or is there a better way to make it so that all of my previous email folders are available?

Administrator Permission To Delete A File

I have been running as an admin (i have since set up another standard account for my daily work), and i am trying to delete a folder on my external hard-drive. It says i need an admin/everyone's permission to delete the file. I am the only user. I have tried to change the settings for my external hd to share it and grant all users full control. I cannot find a way to change the ownership of it like suggested in one thread.

How can i delete files without getting this message that i need permission, when i am running as an admin or standard user?

Access Denied - Cannot Access The Outlook.ost File

We have installed windows 7 on a new machine. The user is a domain administrator and has full rights. When we try to open outlook, it says that it cannot access the outlook. Ost file and then freezes. We have moved the uac slider all the way to don't notify, granted explicit ownership to the c: users folder, given machine specific administrator rights to the user and the problem still persists.

When we log in as the hidden administrator though, everything works just fine for the same users exchange login. The user cannot even delete files on the network that belong to the user! Everything works fine when he logs in from another machine running xp. What are we missing here?

File Access Problem

Didn't see this fix in the list, so- i just got a machine with windows 7. I wanted to arrange the 80 plus programs in my start menu into folders and to scrap the goofy folders some programs put on there, and i want to get into my cookies files to see who is hanging on, but this os denies access (fwiw, one user, i am administrator). I change the properties> security to allow access as win help says, and it still does not allow access. (I have enabled hidden files, just in case. ).

I've been programming and fixing software and hardware since hollerith cards, and i have had a couple pcs of one type or another since my 1983 ibm. So i don't live to work on them, i just want it to do what_i_ want it to do. >> How does one get to access windows 7 files when the security access "fix" does not work? No smoke now. Those cookies and links exist somewhere and someone looked at them during programming.

Upon clicking yes, a working box appears and then goes away and is replaced with

And then i am back to start again. Please help me regain access to my file.

Directory Paths And File Access In Xp Mode

Hi all, i recently became a windows 7 user when i bought a new laptop. For many years i've been using an old 16-bit program (foxpro for windows 2. 6) under various versions of windows, up through and including xp3. It didn't work under win 7, so i purchased the online upgrade from home premium to professional so that i could download windows xp mode. This all worked well, and i'm able to use the old foxpro when running a virtual session of xp in a window. The only issue i'm having now is that i'd like to create an icon for the program on my windows 7 desktop so that i can run the program without the intermediary step of starting an xp mode virtual session. It appears from the documentation that this should be possible. But i'm having trouble with the directory paths under xp vs. Win 7. In windows xp, i store foxpro's program files in c:program filesfpw26, and i store my scripts and data files in c:documents and applications[me]my documents xyz. In xp, i created a shortcut to the executable, and under properties created a "start in:" path with the path above to the script and data files. I copied the shortcut icon over to the windows 7 desktop, but the "start in:" reference did not make it across.

So i entered this pathname again in properties for the shortcut on the windows 7 desktop. Unfortunately it isn't recognizing this; i can start foxpro from the windows 7 desktop, but it acts as if it's in the directory of its executable files under c:program files. I wondered if there was a way to describe a windows 7 version of the pathname for the script/data file directory, but i couldn't figure out how to do this. So i have three questions:1) how can i pass a pathname in the "start in:" field under properties for the foxpro shortcut icon on the windows 7 desktop to make it recognize my directory of scripts/data files that exists under my documents in the virtual version of xp?2) if i can succeed with this, is there a way to access the directory of scripts/data files from windows 7 (for example, to edit them with a text editor) without needing to start an xp virtual session? In other words, are the xp directories visible from win 7?3) alternatively, would it be feasible for me to put my directory of scripts/data files under my documents in the windows 7 directory tree, and is it possible to pass foxpro a parameter to tell it to "start in" (and act on) that directory?

Opening Outlook Data File - Access Denied

I have an outlook data file created and used when i was running outlook 2003 on windows xp-pro. I've got a new machine now with windows 7 home premium. I'm still running outlook 2003. I am logged in as an administrator. The permissions for all folders in the path and the file itself grant full control. I have changed the owner to my new login.

Importing .pst File From Outlook 2002 To 2007 - Access Denied

Importing outlook 2002 exported . Pst file (using xp, to usb drive), into outlook 2007 (running windows 7. File copied to this laptop, under my documents). File access permission denied.

. Pst file laptop #1:

Exported from outlook 2002
Using xp
Saved on portable usb drive

. Pst file laptop #2:

Runing windows 7
Into outlook 2007
File saved under my documents, on laptio #2

. Pst file "share" set to "owner/user (administrator), everyone, group - full access"
File it self can not be changed from "locked" to "read" or "read/write" or special permissions; by adding user to this file. File access permission (still) denied. Idea: it has to be an issue with "changing ownership or security permissions"

Deny Permission On Drive C:

I was tinkering with group and users policies when i accidentally assigned "deny" permission to "full control" on the c: root folder to the "users" group. Now, since c: is the drive where windows is installed, my sysop is pretty screwed up;even as administrator i cannot access any file on that drive, cannot install almost anything and more. Is there a way to restore the permissions on c: without reformatting and reinstalling? Please keep in mind that being c:  the system drive i cannot install anything like msi or msu packages. I think im going crazy.

Denied Permission As Administrator

Frequently when using windows 7, i am denied permission to do something. I am told i must have administrator permission. Sometimes, i merely have to click continue to proceed. However, other times, i am just told i don't have the permission and that is the end of the story. I have recently been denied permission to install a new program from a dvd disk. The frustrating thing isi am listed as the administrator. I am the only person using the computer, and it is not part of a network. Does anybody know of a workaround for this problem?

Error - Do Not Have Permission To Save To That Folder

When i download files and try to save them to my folders in 'd' drive, i get an error that says i do not have permission to save to that folder. I was a vista user and created these files and folders on 'd' drive. When vista crashed, i began using win7rc for many months and had no problems accessing the folders and files on 'd' drive. Yesterday i installed rtm. Now when i download files and try to save them to my folders in 'd' drive, i get an error that says i do not have permission to save to that folder. I am the only user and am an administrator.

I used the same user name on the install of rtm that i had in rc. I did change the computer name during the install of rtm. How can i regain control of my folders. I do not have any trouble reading the files in the folders. I have set up my libraries the same as all user files are in 'd' drive.

Program Files Download Permission

I have a new windows 7 laptop (64 bit), and struggling at times to learn how to use it. I'm in the habit on my windows xp desktop, of downloading setup/installer files into program files, where i set things up as follows:

Program files
-Adobe
-Games
-Tetris
-Tetris program
-Tetris installer
-Inkscape
-Inkscape program
-Inkscape installer
-Inkscape tutorial #1

Sorry, i can't figure out how to make a single-space. Hopefully you can see that i put my setup/installer file in its own folder, alongside the program folder, both within what i guess you could call an "umbrella folder". For example you can see that i might also put a tutorial or some other related item - i'm very organized. So when i download, i would put the setup/installer or zip file into 'inkscape installer' or 'tetris installer'.

Then when i install or unzip, i do so into 'inkscape program' or 'tetris program'. That's how i do it on my xp desktop computer, and have been for years. But here in windows 7, when i try to download into program files, i get an error message: "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. " I am the adiminstrator, my user account is the only one on this computer, and it's the adminstrator account!

After spending hours (5 or 6) with dell tech support, finally i am told that in windows 7, manual download directly into program files is not allowed. Files can only be installed directly or moved in after downloading elsewhere. I was ready to accept that and create a new sort of workflow for myself, perhaps keeping my installer files all in one folder, outside of program files. But then, while searching these forums, i came across this thread: http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7files/thread/d2bb7c3c-bf0b-4ea6-8463-42461a56c105

It offers instructions for changing permissions. And i think i can probably follow those instructions without further help. But just before i did, i thought i should ask whether that applies to my particular problem, that i detailed above, including error message. Have i been misinformed by dell (it wouldn't be the 1st time). By following those instructions, will i be able to download in my usual manner? Or at the very least, can i try it relatively safely, without major complications?

I suspect that even if it doesn't solve my problem, it may reduce all the other permission related message boxes that keep popping up - moving files around, etc. I hope so anyway.

Why Windows Will Update Computer Without Permission?

Can anyone tell me why windows will update the computer without your permission. I was in the middle of playing the sims 3, did not save. Windows updated by itself. I lost my whole game i had been playing for 3 hours. Its supposed to prompt you but if your playing a game how can you see the prompt? Thats not fair. I'm sure there is some setting i don't know about possibly but that doesn't help me now. It should never restart on its own, well i guess i should have bought a mac. Your right windows its my fault. Should have just thrown you out the window and bought a mac.

Administrator As Only User - Permission Error

I installed windows 7, choosing custom to get maximum benefit over vista. The only user account i have setup is that of an administrator. I have not password protected it yet. I copy/pasted my mcafee program folders from my external hard drive to the programs folder and of course it wont function - i need to reinstall it from their website. When i try to delete the folder it drops an error message: folder access denied - you need permission to perform this action - you require permission from the administrators to make changes to this folder. As far as i can tell i am the only user and the administrator.

Admin Account Problem With Permission

So in the control panel it says i have an admin account. But it's still telling me sometimes when i try to access files that i need admin permission. I'm also having this annoyance with office 2003 where i have to agree to the eula again every time i open it, and when i googled the problem, it says this happens if you're not on an administrator account. I'm having a similar problem with another program too, getting errors caused by running programs as if i'm not on an admin account. What's going on? How do i fix this? I am the only account on this computer and it does say i'm an administrator, so i'm pretty baffled.

Launch Specific .exe Without Asking For Permission

How do i launch specific .exe in win7 without it asking for permission? I set uac to high as possible because i am not bothered clicking yes a few times a day. However there are a few temperature monitoring programs i would like to start with windows without having to click yes and yes, as it takes considerably longer to have to do such things at startup it seems. I cannot find a way to cause permissions to remove this popup box, and do not want to remove the uac completely, is there any way around this?

Drive Is Not Accessible - Permission To Use Network Resource

I have done a clean win 7 64 bit install on c drive on my pc that used to be xp. The hard drive has two partitions c drive and d drive. The win 7 pc also has two other hard drives installed each with a single partition (e drive and v drive). The hard drives are not raid configured. The e and v drives were not involved in the win7 installation and therefore still have their xp configuration.
Prior to installing win 7 all partitions on all hard drives on the pc were accessible on the three other xp machines on my "workgroup" home network.

On the win7 machine i can access all drives on all of the xp machines. On any of the xp machines i can access the e and v drives on the win7 machine. When i try to access the win7 c drive or d drive from any of the xp machines i get:

"Pcpc (x) drive is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource" where (x) is either c or d depending on what drive was accessed.

I have tried un-sharing and re-sharing the c and d drive. I have also compared the property settings between the c and d drives that i can't access with the e and v drives that are accessible. Those setting are the same. Please advise any thoughts on what can be done to render my c and d drives accessible on my network xp pcs.

Unable To Get Permission To Connect To Office Server

New windows 7 pc unable to get permission to connect to office server (win2003). I work in a small office, which up until recently was just 2 pc's running xp, connected to a server which housed accounts and shared files and backups. We purchased a new pc pre-installed with windows 7 (home). We can find (tho not always) the networked drives and view them, but not get permission.

My knowledge of networking is limited, but i'm assuming this is because the win7 pc is not logging onto the server on start up, i have an account for it to log onto, but unable to ascertain how/where exactly to go to enable it to log onto the server. Would upgrading to professional cure this issue? Is there another way around this? The server is running windows server 2003. Can't think of any other info off the top of my head which may help.

I've tried following th kb concerning permissions but it tells me either as administrator or user that i do not have authority to change permissions.
