Disappearing Drives, Unstable Boot Up Process

I've been using the windows 7 on my old asus desktop for a few months without a glitch until recently when the hard drives started disappearing by themselves or freeze after copying large files from the external hd and crashed. I reinstall the windows 7 few times, all of the oldie drivers that came with the pc, and the os updates nothing seem to help.

My pc is set to the s3 mode and three of the four internal hard drives are 1tb in sizes and they are all sata drives. I have a cd drive that is on the pata and it doesn't seem to cause any trouble. When the hard drives went to sleep, they woke up without any problem in the past.

When it was fresh installed a few months back, the windows 7 os was already providing all that was needed to run the pc to communicate with the rest of the internal hard drives for a few months without a single problem. I did use the drivers that came with the pc only to solve the problems but the symptions are persistent. I've been downloading microsoft updates regularly from the ms site so my pc is up to date as far as the os is concern and i wonder if the newer updates are to blame.

The moment the pc is booted up, "my computer" icon would show one or two, sometimes all three hard drives (excluding the main c drive) and when one of the troublesome hard drive is clicked to open, the pc would hang indefinitely. Only shutting down the pc completely (not resetting) would allow the boot up process to continue back but often the pc wouldn't boot up but frozen up on the big windows 7 ms icon at the beginning of the boot process indefinitely. If it was the hard drives problem, one or two, even all three drives wouldn't disappear randomly.

Bsod During Boot Process

I was playing an on-line game when the system locked up. The keyboard was unresponsive, no ctlr-alt-del or anything else seemed to have an effect, i power cycled and now the system cannot pass the boot process before bsoding. I get the windows saying starting windows and it just starts to draw the microsoft 4 color logo (about 3 to 5 pixels worth) when it bsods and reboots. Trying the repair mode it just bsods again but without rebooting. If i try the command line it stops when it gets to classpnp.sys then reboots.

I did a full memory test using memtest86, all 8g passed 3 iterations.

If i try the repair, it "loads windows files" and then bsods with a machine_check_exception with a  stop value of 0x0000009c (0x000000000000003, 0xfffff88002865b60, 0x00000000b220000a, 0x00000000002010a)

Dual Boot Two Drives

I have installed windows 7 64-bit on a new hdd, and i have vista home premium 32-bit on another hdd. Can i dual boot these two drives as they stand and how. With windows 7 64-bit installed on one drive and registered, i have windows vista home premium 32-bit on the next drive and registered, i find a couple of programmes will not run properly on the windows 7 system. So i unplug the windows 7 system and run vista, what i want to know is can i install windows 7 32-bit as a clean install on the vista hdd. Fter re formatting the drive and then making this a dual boot system.

Dual Boot Drives Or Hot Swap

I have been using w7 64bit for a few months now and it is awesome, i love it. However my issue is this, i work with video and i have found my expensive editing program and the more expensive io box are both incompatible. The manufacturer has now announced "end of life" on the program and offered a fantastic deal on a new upgrade 80% off. Sounds pretty good, except the necessary io box is only sold at full price $3k.

So i'm thinking, can i use my old xp pro 32 bit drive in a multi-boot set up or is it better to go with a hot swap set up? I would have to leave the external capture and render hd's alone and just change the "c" drive which would only contain windows and the editing program.

Fix Separate System And Boot Hard Drives

I recently purchased and installed a new hd for my system that was running windows 7. I had purchased the windows 7 digital download installer so i have no install/repair cds to work with. My goal is to replace the old hd with the new one such that the new hd serves as both the system and the boot drive and if i want to i can either remove the old hard drive entirely or wipe it and use it for back up storage.

After installing and formatting the new hd i performed a custom installation of windows 7 using my downloaded installer and selected the new drive as the drive to install windows. After the installation completed i checked the disk management and the old drive (c:) is designated as the system drive and the new drive (z:) is the boot drive. As it currently stands if i unplug the old drive (c:) the attempt to turn the system on it tries to boot from the cd (which i don't have) and windows 7 won't start.

Further it appears that both drives now have windows 7 installed and if i have both plugged in, upon startup it asks what software i would like to run "windows 7" or "windows 7, " after a 20 second countdown it starts up normally. This is more of an annoyance than a show stopper because it adds about 20 seconds every time i start the system.

Any ideas on how to fix the issue? I will try reinstalling windows 7. If that doesn't work my next thought is to burn the digital installer to a cd, unplug the old drive and when it prompts to load from cd to try the burned disk.

No Boot Menu Dual Booting On Separate Hard Drives

I'm trying to dual boot vista and windows 7. I have vista installed on one hard drive and windows 7 installed on a separate hard drive. I can boot both by changing the boot order in the bios but i do not get a boot menu on either os.

Here is what i get using "bcdedit /enum all" on vista:

"Microsoft windows [version 6. 0. 6001]

Dual Boot 2 Hard Drives Xp 32-bit With Win 7 64-bit

I would like to set up a dual boot system with windows xp and windows 7. I have 3 hard drives in my system now, one as xp system disc, another for storage and one unallocated that i want to install windows 7 pro(64). I want to leave my xp installation intact for now. I have been trying to research just what i need to do to install windows 7 on that extra drive and i am seeing all kinds of conflicting answers. First, i have all my original operating system disks so i want to purchase an upgrade version of windows 7 pro.

Specifically i want/need to know will i have to install windows xp first on that empty drive before i install windows 7, or can i just insert the xp disc as proof that its an upgrade as i have done with previous windows installations. I would just like to know what i am getting into.

I am asking because i have seen conflicting answers, such as:-i need to buy the full version (lets be honest, the upgrade price is expensive enough) because it won't let me do an upgrade. This just doesn't seem right.

I have to install xp first on that empty drive before i can install the upgrade version. No mention what-so-ever of the windows 7 checking for a previous version of windows even when viewing detail installation instructions regarding installing windows 7 on a separate drive with xp installed first on another. 95% of installation instructions assume you are just doing an upgrade right on top of the old windows xp installation, maybe 4% a dual boot where you are partitioning a single drive and i think my eyes are starting to bleed from reading and sifting through all the tutorials that don't apply to me lol.

System Image Reports Two Boot Drives To Image

I have a sata (boot drive) and an ide drive in my win 7 pro 64 bit machine. Is there any way to remove the old boot partition on my ide from the list of drives to image w/ sys image? I can understand the c: part (sata/boot) and the "system reserved" but i don't want to image the d: part (1st part on old ide xp pro boot drive that has 84gb on it that i don't want to bkup). Funny thing is that the ide drive doesn't even show up on the boot sequence in bios. I really don't want to reformat in case something happens to my new sys i can still run xp on my old one (i lost my xp install disk).

I just want to leave it out of the sys image list. Theres no way to remove it from the list without reformatting the d: part. (Old boot drive)? Can i possibly make the d: part. Non bootable without running the xp installation on it and make it bootable again later?Maybeny help removing it from the list would be greatly appreciated!

Roxio Intermittent Interruption - Cd Drive Unstable

With factory installed windows 7 and roxio 1. 01, when a cd is playing, clicking on the roxio icon causes the music to be intermittently interrupted and the cd drive to go unstable. New dell studio 1555 with factory installed windows 7 and roxio 1. 0. With roxio, when a cd is inserted into the cd drive on the laptop, the roxio icon automatically appears on the desktop, the cd play window appears on the desktop and the cd begins playing.

A click on the roxio icon causes intermittent interruption of the music (about 0. 5 second alternating surges of music and silence. The cd drive sounds like it is switching between speeds at the same rate. Roxio does not open. I downloaded update r226903 for the roxio from dell website. Any fixes?

Alternative To Windows Networking - Unstable Printer Sharing

I've been using windows 7 for a month now on one pc. I have a home network for other pc's running winxp service pack 3. I am a very frustrated windows 7 user. My network is unstable, printer sharing is iffy at best and i have to hold my breath whenever i try to use a shared file. Previously, with an all xp network, my network was flawless for years at a time. I've been following advice on the forum trying to troubleshoot the problem, but i have a day job and can't spend all my time booting this and that and trying different combinations of things. My question:

Is there a reliable alternative to windows networking. I have trivial requirements - to use a printer physically connected to one of the xp machines and to do simple file sharing across the network. I am even considering buying a copy of windows xp and doing a clean install on the machine running windows 7, but this would be days and days of work. Any insights for a frustrated windows 7 user?

Disappearing Drive

I am running windows 7 -64 bit professional
The system boots off a 10k velociraptor

I also have a raid 5 set up for my data through a silicon image sil 3124 running in one of the spare pci-e slots. It comes on just fine (as drive d). Frequently, usually after the system has gone to sleep, the drive just plain disappears. I have to reboot to bring it back to life on the system. Two questions; toward the same end.

1) how do i get it to stop disappearing?
2) how do i get windows 7 from going to sleep? Ive messed round with the power options in the control panel and ive come to the conclusion that windows 7 -64 bit is narcoleptic.

Disappearing Programs

I have yet been able to regularly duplicate this problem, but it seems to happen to me at least once a day. I did a clean install of w7rc on a fresh hard drive and everything installed fine. However, occasionally i will click a program on my task bar and it will way it's not there and ask me if i want to delete the shortcut. If i go to the start bar, there are no programs and the only thing i can do it shut down. I'm uncertain if microsoft is finding this issue as i receive no apparent error. Upon rebooting, everything is fine. Like i said, i don't know how to reproduce it as it seems to have no trend towards doing a specific operation, but it seems to happen to me at least once a day.

Why Are My Files Disappearing?

Lately i have been having problems with my files disappearing and then reappearing. I'll type up a word document and save it in a specific folder. When i go back to look for it in said folder it is not there. I try to search for it and it is no where in the library. I also try to rearrange the folder in a different ways to find the file. Alas, it still does not show up. The way i have to find it is to go into word and hope that the document is in the recently opened documents. If not, i am
Screwed and have to wait for it to magically show up again. Does any one know what my problem is and how to fix it?

Disappearing Mouse Pointer

After a while of using my laptop, my mouse pointer gets uncontrollable for a few seconds. After it starts disappearing or moving objects, maximizing and minimizing for a few seconds it (sometimes) goes back to normal for about a minute and starts acting erratic again. This will go on for hours or until i get frustrated and shut down my system. Is this happening with any other users. If so please tell me how to fix this problem, i am tired of losing unsaved data. I lost seven chapters the other night.

Microsoft Games Keep Disappearing

Some of my microsoft games (e.g, freecell, solitaire, etc. ) Periodically disappear from my desktop - usually after the computer wakes from sleep mode. When that happens, i also cannot open them from the control panel. I've noticed that others seem to have this problem too. I've tried the check/unchecked games trick discussed in the forums. This doesn't work. I've been able to use the system restore, but it is tedious to keep doing that and i'm afraid that i might lose some programs or work one time doing that. I've run anti-spyware and anti-virus programs but they haven't found anything. Anyone have any suggestions?

And this morning i got a pop up that said sticky notes weren't working, ms didn't know why, and they would get back to me when they found a solution. I'm already old. I don't know how much more time i have. These little glitches are enough to turn me into a mac person.

Dvd Drive Disappearing Problem

On 2 laptops - almost identical dell inspiron 1545's - i have installed w7 rc 64 bit - after installation, the dvd drive seems to come and go at random - if its not showing, you can push the button to open the drive, and it reappears, and works fine for a while, but then it disappears again.

One one machine, i tried all of the suggestions about removing uperfilters, and lowerfilters, etc from the registry, disabled the integrity check, and turned off the driver check - have done all driver updates, and windows updates - now the drive works fine!

On machine 2 - did exactly the same things - drive still having this issue. I have also tried installed 32 bit w7 on it, and same thing. It originally came with vista - and it worked fine. Also, i know the drive is good - if it can boot and install windows 7 twice! Any thoughts/advice would be welcome!

Files Disappearing From Recycle Bin

I have had this computer since christmas, and i love it. I have windows 7 and everything has worked perfectly up until i got connected to the internet in late april and so far it has been one problem after another. And that leads me to my latest frustration. Files that i have deleted to the recycle bin have disappeared. And i did not permanently delete then!So far i have not lost anything of major importance, except for some photos, but, that's not even a disaster.

However, i'm now afraid to delete anything, for fear that i would not be able to restore the item if i needed it. Fter losing a handful of files from the recycle bin, i did an experiment:  i purposely deleted some items/folders that were empty or contained stuff that i absolutely didn't need. I checked the recycle bin every day and for a while my deleted files were still in the recycle bin. Now, today. They're gone!

The only thing i did out of the ordinary was download an update for adobe reader. That shouldn't have any affect on what happens to the contents of the recycle bin - or would it?So, i really would like to know why this is happening. Alice bb**** as of today, june 22/10, i have tried your suggestion azeez n. As well as others from related topics and still files disappear from recycle bin.

Now, here's a detailed account of events leading up to the files disappearing from the bin, all from today. Checked my email. Created 2 unimportant word files and then deleted them to the recycle bin. Bell program did a scheduled anti-virus scan.completed. All ok. Opened action center, recycle bin  empty! Windows defender recommended a scan. Normal. Created 3 more unimportant word files and deleted them to the recycle bin.

Went to favorites clicked on microsoft answers, recycle bin empty again!Created 2 more unimportant word files and deleted them to the recycle bin. Signed in to windows mail;  checked mail;  signed out. Selected microsoft answers from favorites; checked my threads; checked some related questions; signed out. Java update notice popped up on screen. Allowed it to download. Bell internet security notice popped up saying it had found and deleted a virus and recommended an immediate scan to see if there were any further infections.

Did deep scan at 98% complete. Recycle bin empty again!Scan completed. All ok. All these instances happened in one day, today. What is happening? As of june 25/10 the problem still exists. I am almost certain than it only occurs when i am online. I am trying to monitor this more closely and will post the outcome. Sometimes it seems as if the recycle bin is on a timer and just empties on queue. One day it seemed to empty about every hour.

One thing is for certain, i cannot use the recycle bin in it's present operating condition. Can i completely delete the bin and reinstall it?  If so, how? I am just a novice so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.

Media Player 12 Music Files Disappearing

For valentines day hubby built me a new computer and put windows 7 on it, which i am highly starting to regret. Anyhow i put my music i had backed up on my back up drive and it works fine, no problems. Then yesterday i ripped 2 c. D's on to it. I thought everything was fine shut down the computer. Then last night i went to play them and neither of them would show up on my media player, but both were in my music folder.

I deleted them and ripped them again and they showed up on the media player but the second i exit out of the media and go back to it they are gone, vanished, poof. I have tried restore media library and restarted computer come back they load on to the media player i exit out of the player and go back and once again gone. I have tried everything i can think of and still nothing is working and i am getting highly frustrated.

Disappearing Printer Icons And Print Failures

In previous win versions it was possible to have different settings for the same printer eg quality, draft, color, black & white, etc. All the different icons would be displayed in printers. Win7 only displays the one printer ican (default) and the not other printer options in devices and printers. The other printer options do however appear in an application print dialogue box. The default printer works fine. The printer options do not print at all. All printer options use the same driver.

1. How do you make all the printer option icons display permanently?
2. Why do the non-default printer options not print?

Aero Peek / Title Preview Not Disappearing

I have following problem with windows 7: i have firefox opened. I hover mouse over task bar and window preview start displaying with window titles. I do not click at them, i click again into firefox window. Usually this results into latest taskbar application i hovered have its title displayed for around 5 seconds, then disappearing, and this application have its bar highlighted with main icon color (which is also not what i want). But sometimes window previews from latest hovered window just do not disappear until i press some keyboard button in firefox. This is quite annoying for me. Is this how it supposed to work? I expect taskbar to stop any highlighting and hide any preview windows when i click into main application window. I have latest drivers and fully updated system if that helps.

Dual Boot Boot Problem After Resizing Win 7

Boot problem on dual boot after resizing windows 7 (32bit) switched from drive w: to drive g: i have a dual boot system that boots into win 7 (64) (c:drive) or win 7 (32) (w:drive). I needed to increase the size of win7 (64) drive and in order to do so i needed to move the win 7 (32) partition. Now i can still boot into win 7 (64) with no problem but when i boot into win 7 (32) it windows states that it is not a genuine copy and it is actually on drive "g:"! Anyway to change it back to "w:" because i believe this is the problem.
