.exe Files Will Not Open Normally

.exe files will not open normally, they just give a message saying "choose the program you want to use to open this file" i've seen this problem elsewhere but with a few different recommendations. My windows 7 recently started malfunctioning recently after apparently contracting several viruses - i think i've gotten rid of most of the problems by downloading the free version of avg, which was recommended to me by a friend. However, two problems remain:

1. Internet explorer keeps opening erratically and immediately accessing strange websites (i'm sure this is some sort of malware still on my computer). My internet explorer folder won't delete, either (it says i need "permission from trustedinstaller to make changes to this folder").

2. I can't open .exe files normally. Every time i try to (either by double clicking an icon or from the start menu) i get an "open with" window, prompting me to pick an application to open the .exe file with. I can still open applications if i right-click on them and select "run as administrator", but something is still obviously wrong and i'm hoping someone knows what might be happening so they can help.

Oh, and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (where the "safely eject hardware" button usually is") is gone.

Unknown Virus Winoffice11.exe

I have a problem with windows 7 premium 64 bit. I notice i have a new file called winoffice11.exe *32 running in my task manager. This file is located in c:program files (x86)windowswinoffice11.exei am unable to remove this file. I stop the program in task manager, delete the folder but upon reboot after clearing cache and temp files etc i get the same file back. So i think it is a virus yet i cannot see to get any virus scanner to remove it. I have zone alarm installed, i even ran the onelivecare full scan and it was still there. I know this is not a standard install file from ms or is it?I do run vm on the effected machine.

Zipped Files And Folders Changing Format

When i receive zipped files or folders in emails or on discs, they show as explorer zip files without the usual 'zippered' icon. A right click has no result. When i left click, i get multiple blank windows repeatedly trying to open. The only way to get past this is to power down my laptop. Very frustrating. I have spent enough time searching other forums but i'm not program savvy so i don't want to try to fix it without understanding the problem.

Can't Open Explorer.exe, Control Panel, Or Help

Brand new windows 7 computer - can't open explorer.exe, control panel, or help. Can't see or save to c: or d: drives. Got the computer last night, and it worked fine. But tonight i can only access ie, media player, etc.

I only have the default user account at this point, so i have admin rights. I haven't really done much yet since i just got the computer last night. I was going to transfer files from my old vista computer tonight, but i can't even open up explorer on my new windows 7. I tried rebooting, but it didn't help. I also ran the sfc; it did not find any integrity violations.

When i click on the folder icon on the task bar, i get a dialog box with a heading of "explorer.exe" and a message stating "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. " If i try to print a web page to xps, it doesn't commit the save on the c: drive (os and program files) or on the d: drive (data).

I have no idea why it is doing this! It is a brand new system. Last night i installed windows updates and changed the desktop background. I haven't installed any programs or transfered data. And it was just fine last night; this problem started when i turned it on tonight.

Office 2003 Archive.pst File Problem

Fresh install of win 7 home edition 64 bit. Office 2003 installed ok after emulating xp. Imported all . Pst information without any real problems except for the archive. Pst file. This file is older and large, so i elected to rename it and attempt to then create a new archive. Pst file based on procedures posted on numerous forums and websites. None of these procedures worked and when i am prompted to archive my new install of office 2003 i am unable to do so.

As best i can tell, i have all the required administrator authorities. I have not changed any registry information as suggested on some websites. Office 2003 has been updated to all current service pack updates. On an identical computer and install in my wife's computer, she can archive by adding to her older archive file, but we cannot create any new archive files in her application either.

Cannot Run .exe Files

Since yesterday i have been unable to open any .exe programs on my windows 7 computer. I have read numerous questions and possible solutions for this, but none has worked.

I get an error window saying:

These files can't be opened
Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened

I have read about editing the registry but it hasn't worked. I cannot restore windows 7, as i have found out i have no restore points (oops).

I have run a full scan of my system with ms security essentials, and found nothing.

Can anyone help? If you need more details, let me know.

Additional info:
-
- I cannot for example open notepad.exe. But i can open a txt file and it will open in notepad.

- Same goes for firefox, ie and opera. Can't open the browsers directly, but if i run an html file and choose "open with" it will open in the desired browser.

- My ms security essentials doesn't run on startup (non of my startup programs do), but i can right-click a file and choose to scan it with msse and it will open and scan.

.exe Files Programs Problem

I accidentally set my computer so it will run .exe files with windows media center. I cannot seem to find a way to undo this problem. This makes launching programs impossible. I've seen other posts here, but none of the solutions i've seen seem to help. Since i cannot launch .exe files, i am unable to use cmd or notepad. I have tried assigning .exe files to a program and then uninstalling/deleting a file, but that also did not work. I do not want to do a system restore, since it's been a long time since i've created a restore point.

Cannot Access Registry Or .exe Files

Can't access registry or .exe fies so i got a new computer, it has windows  and runs on a 64-bit operating system. I had downloaded and played a game on my other computer, and the client worked just fine. On this computer, i downloaded the same client, from the exact same site, and for some reason i couldn't open, drag, or access the .exe file from my downloads. So i looked into it and over time realized that some .exe files would open while others wouldn't. I went in the registry and changed the value of both options in the exe folder without realizing that i should've just edited the default.

So to get to the point, i can't access any .exe files, on top of having absolutely no access to the registry. I can manage to et on the internet directly, but no programs or downloads will open, or can't access the registry ether. I've tried every trick in the book, booting in safe mode with command prompts, command prompts in general, and none of them seem to work. So without further adue, i'm screwed. Any help or suggestions?Oh and i've managed to have every single .exe file try and start with regedit, reading that if you tried to open regedit with itself it would work. Absolutely not. And now i'm in an even deeper rut. Nd changing it to regedit.com doesn't work either.

Program Association Problem With .exe Files

Have a desktop with 4 accounts (mine =administrator) and 3 others (non-admin) for each of our children. I have downloaded adobe acrobat (+ flash / shockwave plug ins) and made it available to all users. It works fine on all accounts except for one. One our son's it kills all other programs/executable files. i.e. Ie8, word, excel  etc.

No program will work. They all somehow think they're pdf's. I've tried to go into control panel and fix 'associations' but ".exe" isn't an available choice. I need to read pdf's for work, but my son keeps uninstalling acrobat so that programs will work in his account, very frustrating. Ideas?

Cannot Open .jpg Files

It just keeps displaying "loading" but it never loads. It worked fine yesterday. I have a toshiba laptop with windows 7 home premium. It alternates between working fine and having problems. I'm wondering if it has something to do with a lexmark printer i have been trying to get to work properly. I decided to just uninstal it for now but strange things have been happening ever since. I would like to just restore to a restore point but i am unable to do that as well. I get an error message and a suggestion that my virus program may be interfering.

I disabled it but it still will not restore. I was unable to play movies, i had the problem where it would just display a still of the movie. I just decided to get a different movie viewer. Sometimes wmp works though. The other one always works. I got another picture viewer but i would really like to find out whats wrong here. The problems are starting to pile up.

Error - Explorerframe.dll File Damaged

So, yesterday, booted up my laptop to find that when i tried to log in, windows explorer would crash. I would get past the login screen, and before it could load the desktop, i got the error message "windows explorer has stopped working"

I wrote down the specs of the error message.

Problem event name: inpagecofire
Error status code: c0000185
Faulting media type: 00000003
Damaged file name: explorerframe.dll
Os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 768. 3
Locale id: 1033

So, i restarted in safe mode. I got the same error.

Started in safe mode with cmd prompt, and ran sfc/ scannow. It seemed to stall at 13% for nearly 45 minutes. I stopped this, and tried to repair the system -and- also tried 3 system restores (up to two months back) from the f8 menu. They all failed, and i wasn't able to log in normally and have windows explorer function. This file is located at c:/windows/system32/explorerframe.dll

I could back up my hard drive and just do a full wipe, reinstalling windows, but i don't want to have to reinstall all of my programs. Anyone have any suggestions?

Unable To Open Encrypted Files

Ok, here's my situation:- my pc came with windows xp, and i encrypted some files on it. - After a couple of years, i started getting errors that indicated the drive may be going bad. - I bought a new drive, and copied all of my data there, including the encrypted files. - Soon after, i installed windows 7 rc on the new drive, and then windows 7 home edition about 8 months later. - All this time i was able to open the encrypted files on both drives (the old drive with the original files, and the new drive with the copies). - Well, the old drive finally failed and, unfortunately, the system was still booting from that drive.

So now i had a good windows 7 installation on the new drive without a boot sector. - So, i booted with my windows 7 cd, and the only option i had was to install a new version of windows. - Now i can no longer open my encrypted files (copies on the new drive) even though my user name and password are still the same. Were the 'keys' only stored on the old drive that died ?
