Using Keyboard In Win 7

I'm not visually impaired, but i prefer to use the keyboard more than the mouse. I am finding win7 to be very cumbersome to use with the keyboard. I know there are tons of new logo key combinations-i think i've tried them all-but it is still very difficult for me to move around explorer using the keyboard. Seems like everything takes 2 or 3 more keystrokes than it did when i used xp. How are other "keyboarders" or even visually impaired users coping with win 7? Any ideas on working more efficiently with the keyboard?

X6 Keyboard Issue

Recently purchased above keyboard and have noticed after a coule of weeks the #7 key at top of keyboard appears to stick down. Ie hold #7 key down and will repeat at a much faster rate than the other keys, almost 3-4 times as fast. If the plastic key is removed and i use a pen to hit the sensor it works correctly. Do you think it needs to be returned under warranty or is there something which i can do? I thought the key itself might be holding the plastic cover on teh sensor down longer than normal, but its position is consistent with all the other keys. I have checked for dirt etc under keys but all clear.

Changing Keyboard

I have a laptop with a japanese keyboard. I am running an english os. I have gone to control panel. I clicked the change keyboard. I added languages so that i have both english and japanese and both languages keyboard options installed. The ime too. When i press alt and shift, the language bar does change between en and jp. The language bar also indicates that the keyboard has changed too.

However, even when the language bar says the language is japanese and that the keyboard is japanese, the pc still types as if configured for an english keyboard. I have also tried typing with the default input language set as japanese, and then tried it set as english.

Does anyone know why, despite following all the steps; despite having text services and input languages indicating that under installed services that english and japanese input devices have been added (and yes, i pressed apply); and despite having a language bar that does switch between english and japanese when alt+shift is pressed, that nothing changes and the key board still behaves as an english (us) keyboard?

Brazilian Keyboard

I just received a new computer with windows 7, and i'm trying to get a brazilian keyboard to work with it. My old computer was xp, and this same keyboard worked fine. I set up a different language for when i was using this keyboard, and it would let me use all the keys (i don't remember what was the keyboard layout that i used).

When i try and set it up with windows 7, however, there is no keyboard layout that matches my layout. The abnt and abnt2 options look the same, and both are missing two keys. My keyboard has the to the left of the z, and the / to the right of the ;. Is there some error with how windows 7 has set up one of these keyboards?

Login Using Only Keyboard

When i leave my work desk i have to lock my station, i do it very often so i would like to login faster - by using only my keyboard. Is there a combination of keys that would get me straight to the password box? When locked the monitor says "swipe your finger" (i can't use my fingerprint reader at that point because the lid is closed, i'm using external keyboard and monitor) when i try ctrl+alt+del nothing happens, esc key works by displaying user icon and the button "switch user".

I must point the user icon with the mouse to reveal the password box, there is apparently no way to change focus to that icon from the keyboard (tab doesn't work). It's annoying that i must grab my mouse every time i want to unlock the workstation.

The @ Key On Keyboard

I have just bought and started using a netbook. I've got windows 7 running and have installed office 2007 professional. The keyboard layout is qwerty. When i use the number 2 key to add the @ symbol to what i am writing, i get speech-marks (") and visa versa with the speech-marks key i get an @.
The number 3 key give a pound (£) symbol instead of the hash. I have been to the control panel to check the region and the keyboard settings, but it all looks normal. Is there a way of changing these keys to they way they are printed on the keyboard?

No Keyboard Input Available

There is a user who started having problems this morning. The machine is 1 week old, loaded with windows 7 ultimate 64bit. The keyboard is dead, the only thing i'm able to do is turn the f-lock on and off nothing else responds. I tried plugging in another usb keyboard and then a ps-2 keyboard and neither work. When i was finally able to use the on screen keyboard to login i found in device manager there was an error 19 for the keyboard saying that driver information in the registry had become corrupt so the device couldn't be started.

So i look that up and find that deleting the upperfilter in the registry was suggested. So i deleted the upperfilter and rebooted and still no keyboard. I can use the keyboard in the bios and to select safe mode or normal mode but once windows starts the keyboard is dead. I've also noticed that everytime i reboot along with the usb keyboard and mouse a ps-2 keyboard and mouse is installed in the device manager with exclamation marks. I've restored to earlier times when everything worked and still no keyboard. Any ideas?

Keyboard Drivers Becoming Disabled

Keyboard *drivers* becoming 'disabled' (1st usb, then ps/2); show "!" In hw-lst, but win-diags find nothing wrong. This is a most peculiar problem. First my usb kbd driver went dead. At first i didn't notice it, as i was using the mouse, primarily, for input, but remember a hw-rejected sound from windows earlier upon logging in.

My keyboard wouldn't do anything. No led toggles - etc, but on another machine, fine, and on same machine 'fine' - until windows comes up, then kbd goes dead (once bios drivers are no longer driving kbd, likely).

Under keyboards, the hid keyboard driver showed a small yellow triangle with an ! In it.

After trying  reinstalling the driver (its the stock ms driver), upgrading it (no upgrades), repair ("nothing can be found wrong, maybe the driver is corrupt", but file kbd_hid.sys, checks out w/valid ms sig), i decide to hook up a ps/2 keyboard. It worked for all of maybe 20 seconds. Then a low hw reject message as win7 disconnected my ps/2 kbd! Unbelievable! Now both my hid kbd driver and the 'standard ps/2 keyboard driver show up with the yellow triangle with a "!" In it. But i can't figure out what's doing wrong with the.

I also tried system restore to day before any of this happened - no go. I figured going back further would be a waste, since the start of the problem was rather clearly defined.

I *thought* i had caused it when i tried to enter a sw policy restriction to forbid 'wisptis.exe' from executing - (the onscreen digital ink input dealy) - for two reasons - it kept getting in the way and i couldn't figure out how to get it to turn off (i wanted to use my tablet's native drivers, but wisptis was interfering and making the tablet good for nothing but digital ink (handwriting recognition as keyboard input)).

The final straw came when i was looking through my logs and found the security log (~20mb log) mostly full with security failures from wisptis.exe (i turned on monitoring of security failures, only, thinking that failures, should be rare in properly acting sw, and this software was clearly violating win7's own security policy!).

It was after i added the policy that the usb keyboard went dead.

But that policy went away from the first 'backstep' (system restore point) - but the keyboard didn't come back. After that it was downhill for the ps/2 driver. So, to be clear, the policy is not in the security panel - it was back to pre-init state (no sw policies in effect) after the 1st system restore. So that 'had' to be coincidence. But it felt oddly coincidental, that the only 'keyboad' type inputs left to use on the system were the on-screen keyboard and the digital-ink keyboard. (Mouse paths/drivers are unaffected).

No Keyboard Message When Booting

Keyboard and mouse are not being detected during boot process. I have searched microsoft, the hardware manufacturer and used blitware's driver fetch to no avail. All sources indicate i have the most current drivers for my hardware. Once the system boots to the window's desktop i can remove the usb connection and upon reinsertion windows sees the device and installs drivers; then the keyboard and mouse work find.

Keyboard Performing Shortcuts

Why is my keyboard performing shortcuts i don't want and don't mean to type? I have a new dell inspiron laptop (my old computer with windows xp was also a dell laptop). When i am typing, especially when i'm typing an email or anywhere else online (in firefox), i am unintentionally closing windows and tabs, opening up history and bookmarks sidebars, accidentally sending emails, opening up windows explorer windows. It's all from the keyboard - i am accidentally entering in shortcuts somehow, i guess? I have no idea. This was not a problem on my old computer.

I am a fast typer, but this is annoying the _ out of me. Is this a setting i can turn off? Is it windows 7, or firefox, or my keyboard? Of course i use the common computer shortcuts (copy, cut, paste, etc. ) And don't want to completely turn off keyboard shortcuts, but i am not purposely entering in shortcuts, they just keep happening. All the time. What is the deal?

Keyboard & Mousepad Conflict

I have recently installed windows 7 pro (64-bit) over my last os - windows 7 ultimate candidate (32-bit). Before hand, i had no problems with my keyboard and mouse-pad. Now, i can't move my mouse while i press a key on the keyboard (letters, space bar, numbers, etc). The mouse pointer just stays in place while a key is pressed, and even after i let go it takes a second for the mouse to move again. This is especially annoying when i'm trying to use keyboard shortcuts on photoshop.
I am not using any new programs.

Win 7 Keyboard Issues

I have recently installed the windows 7 release candidate. I partitioned my hard drive so that i can dual boot between that and xp. Everything was working fine until i restarted and booted into xp to do a few things in there then restarted again and booted into windows 7. Upon doing so, my keyboard no longer works. It had been working fine prior to the restart. It is a compaq 134 key office/internet keyboard with a ps/2 connection.

I ran the driver disk on windows 7 prior to ever restarting. I also tried using a dell keyboard with a usb connection and that didn't work either. I have a password protected login, therefore i am stuck at the login screen. I have logged in using the on-screen keyboard and gone to device manager. First it would tell me that the drivers for either keyboard were not installed. Then it would tell me that they were installed, but they still wouldn't work. I was really looking forward to testing out this new version of windows, but it's not making a god first impression. I'm just glad that i chose to dual-boot.

Laptop Keyboard Not Working

I had the rc version of windows working fine on my asus aspire 5670 laptop for several months. Then about 2 weeks age, i installed a couple of windows updates and the laptop keyboard stopped working. No red bangs in deice manager, updating driver had no effect. Keyboard works fine in bios as well as in safe mode. Restore points had no effect. Flashed the bios, still nothing. Since windows 7 was released last week, i snagged a copy and did a clean install (formatting the system drive in advance) assuming that this would fix the problem - it did not! I had to use the on screen keyboard to enter  the product key ;).

Keyboard Typing Issue

I have been having a very frustrating problems with my keyboard. First it starts to respond slowly to what i'm typing(sometimes it doesn't even responds) and then its starts typing by itself one letter repeatedly and it continue to press itself without even touching the computer. This will goes on increasing the intensity until i restart the computer. Other symptoms are ms word creates indents in the documents, tries to save the doc, changes zoom etc. (Its cray).

My browser open's up tabs just like that and out of nowhere. Its like something is typing in shortcuts in the keyboard. Sometimes if you open a window it will start to act as if you left the tab key pressed. My laptop is a hp pavilion dv4 with windows 7 home premium  and i bought it less than a month ago!. I tried restoring to the factory default and the same problem persists.

I tried connecting an external keyboard and it works perfect but if i press the integrated keyboard y goes nuts. I tried to make a clean startup using msconfig and nothing tried updating drivers and nothing! Can someone please help me figure this out?

Keyboard Acts Strange

I have a problem with my keyboard, i'm running w7 32 with all updates. Each time i start up the keyboard is in some strange state on its own. This is what's happening: when i press "1" my pc is starting whatever shortcut there is just next to the windows start button. By, pressing "m" it minimizes the current window. The thing i need to do is to press "l" by which my pc logs off, then i have to hit the "switch user" button and log in again.

After that, everything is running fine expect a few things. To make a capital "l" (l) i am used to hold the right shift button and press "l", now it does not work that way for "l". It is the only latter for which to make it capital i have to hold the left shift button. I am also sometimes using the polish keyboard layout, and i cant make some special polish characters, like the variation of "l" and "o". Any other works fine like a=, z=¼, º and so on.

Sometimes after using the computer for a wile after logging off and on, the keyboard starts to act strange again, like when i first turn the computer on. Any idea that this is? My only idea it that my keyboard starts in some shortcut-using-state, but i have all the ease of access stuff turned off.

Annoying Keyboard Layout

Me as a student have to write a lot of papers but because i write in multiple languages i need to use diacritical marks. So i changed my keyboard layout to english - us international, annoyingly when i want to type my apostrophe it will automatically double itself and ignores the dead keys, and the same thing happens to the quotation mark. I tried to change the keyboard layout to dutch - us international but it only works till i shut down my laptop, so after i turn on my laptop it happens again but now with the dutch - us international layout. So now the only solution i have is becoming a routine, switching keyboard layouts.

Japanese Keyboard Layout

I just installed windows 7 professional english version on my computer which has a japanese keyboard. During the installation, i set the keyboard layout as 'japanese', but now it works like a us keyboard. I checked:-

[Control panel] -> [change keyboards or other input methods] -> [tab: keyboards and languages] -> [change keyboards. ] And found the japanese keyboard layout, but it was the us layout. Also, i read the page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927824 but it didn't work on windows 7. How can i fix this?

Keyboard Keys Malfunction

I'm having alot of problems when i have to type something on my new laptop computer. It's windows 7. I didn't have this problem before, so i don't know if it's because of the system. When i try to use specific punctuation i get another character. This only happens in certain programs, such as microsoft works word processor, if i use a search engine, yahoo answers, and a few other places. For example, when i press shift + ?, In certain programs i get ‰.

If i want to use a question mark i have to open another program, type the question mark copy, and paste it. That's alot of damn work to ask a proper question. If i type shift + @, i get ", shift + #, i get /, shift + ^, i get ?, Shift + {, i get ^, shift + } i get ", shift + i get<, etc, etc, etc, etc. I need this resolved. It either makes my business letters look unprofessional because of the typos, or it takes me longer than necessary to type.

Keyboard Language Toolbar

I agree with the query:  there is an easy route to removing the language bar (i.e. The way to control the keyboard language) in windows 7, but not to restore it. Windows 7 help says that one is to do it via toolbar selection after right-clicking the taskbar. Unfortunately, that is wrong: there are only 3 toolbar on offer in that pane:  address, links and desktop. And btw:  might i suggest that the support engineer remove the response from "rockmoibebe", as it does not solve the problem.

Missing Letters On Keyboard

My keyboard's letters fade away after a few weeks of use. I have alerted microsoft to this problem and they have replaced my keyboard, very promptly, twice, making this my third keyboard. I contacted microsoft and asked them what i could do. Apparently nothing! I tried painting the keys with clear nail varnish to no avail. I was hoping that perhaps microsoft could embed the letters on the keys - but so far, nothing has been done to my knowledge.microsoft have been more than helpful in every other respect. Does someone out there have a solution?

Keyboard Layout In Win 7

I understand that if i want to change all the display/os settings to a second language i need to use windows 7 ultimate (or enterprise). That's not quite what i want to do. My system is in english and that is what i want to keep it. However, i am studying chinese, and occasionally need to change my keyboard layout/language to output chinese characters for homework assignments (either in ms word or in web browsing).

Do i need the ultimate edition to do that as well or can i do that with windows 7 home premium. Other than this, home premium has all the "bells and whistles" i need.

Keyboard Character Settings

I just today picked up a new acer laptop with lots of bells and whistles, including a pre-loaded copy of windows 7 home premium. I asked for professional but i digress. My question is this:

The character settings for my keyboard appear to be stuck on french candian and none of the keys are working as i need them to. (At least that seems to be the problem as far as what i could find in windows help states. ) For example, to capitalize a word i have to turn on the caps lock button just for the first letter. If i want to use the @ symbol, as you would commonly need to for things like typing in your email address - i have to first go into to the character map, select the right symbol and copy it, then paste it into whatever i am working on. Shift 2 brings up this - " (a quote symbol) - instead of the @ symbol.

I have gone into the language bar, selected the us standard option - and have pressed apply, then ok, then checked to see if it works. The file path is showing that it has been changed to us standard, but it is still typing everything in a canadian french keyboard layout! I have repeated this function several times, and tried every way i could think of to find an answer in the windows help menu.

I am way behind in technology so if anyone can help, can you please do so in really simple clear terms? (Even that question mark had to be copied and pasted. In fact i've had to open up the wordpad to write this, then copy and paste the whole thing here in my plea for help!) Again, if you can help please use very simple steps that even an inept user like me can figure out.

Mouse And Keyboard Freeze

I have looked at several threads in the forum but i haven't seen a real answer to this problem. I have a wireless comfort keyboard 4000 and wireless laser mouse 5000 (mouse and keyboard set). I have a motherboard with the nvidia 630i chipset and nvidia 8600 video card. I am running win 7 pro x-64.

At seemingly random times my mouse and keyboard will freeze. Tasks appear to still run and my disk activity light in on. Sometimes the hdd activity light is solid and sometimes it blinks. I used to be able to clear the problem by pressing the sleep key on my keyboard but that does not work any more. Sometimes the mouse an keyboard will unfreeze but most of the time i have to reboot.

I found a reference to kb976972 concerning nvidia usb but that did not solve my problem. I found a reverence to using a usb mouse instead of a wireless mouse. I don't have a usb mouse and besides if it is a wireless mouse problem then microsoft should fix it. I found a reference to removing kb9980302 to fix the problem.

I saw a reference to running a "clean boot" to see if there is a driver causing the problem. I have seen a process for changing power management for usb hubs. What i haven't seen is an answer that everyone says has cured the problem. Lots of people are having this problem. Can someone from microsoft please resolve it?
