Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.

Can't Open Downloads Folder, File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". As far as i can tell, all my other folders open up fine. Last thing i did was trying to download some software that would gradually turn my volume down so that i could fall asleep to it. It didn't work (older software, seemed like it wasn't compatible with windows 7) so i deleted the application and the installer which were located in my downloads folder.

I ended up in an area when i tried to delete a game. Every time i tries to bring up a file or icon, a screen comes up saying, " choose the program you want to use to open this file. " A lot of my files are inside this screen also. I would x it out, but it comes back every time i tries to open a file or turn on the computer.

Choosing A Program To Open A File

I was opening a file and right clicked to open the file, it was a picture file, and used the, "open with. " Command. I selected a program and left the check box below to have that program be the selected program for this kind of file, and all of my files from documents and other non-picture files changed to the particular program icon. All of the taskbar's pinned files/programs like control panel and the file library were all changed to be open by this particular program. It was the windows photo viewer.

I had to restore my computer in order to get it back to using the files in their normal programs. Even my files and programs on the start menu changed. I attempted to change one program back to its original state and left the box checked again, it then changed all my files and programs to this other program. How can i correct this problem so when i have a file i want to use with a certain program i can make that particular program the default but without changing all my other files and programs?

Editing Xml File In Program Files Folder

I have a .net program that reads an xml file located in the application startup folder. Under windows xp, i can simply go in and edit this file to change settings, etc. In windows 7, it is driving me crazy. It looks like i am editing it (running notepad as administrator) and writing the file back to the folder. But then i start the program, and the settings remain unchanged. I've even tried deleting the xml file completely to no avail - the program should give me an error if the file cannot be found (it does this correctly under xp), but it somehow seems to find the original file even though i cannot see the file in windows explorer or find it from a dir command in a dos box.

Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File

In my open with window the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" tick box is greyed out. I have a couple of programs on my w7 (64-bit) pc that will not automatically open when i click on a file associated with them. For example, i have a file which was created in onenote 2003.

When i want to open this file, i double click it and instead of onenote 2003 just loading and opening the file, the open with window comes up asking me to choose a program to run this file. I manually choose onenote 2003 and then try to tick the box opposite "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". But this is greyed out for some reason. And so every time i want to look at that file in onenote 2003 i have to go though this same manual process to select that program to view it.

Choose The Program You Want To Open This File Dialog Issue

As i described, the dialog appears after each restart. It occurs after i have entered my log-in credentials and proceeded to windows. It seems to be fairly late in the boot process as things like chat programs and widgets are fully loaded by the time the dialog appears.

The dialog appears to be the standard "open with" dialog in windows 7.

Specifically the dialog reads:

Choose the program you want to open this file:

File: mathew [this is my user id and there is no extension shown)

If i open the file in something like notepad, then the below information is presented (the #'s are real numbers, but these looked like mac addresses so i left them out).

Error - Windows Can't Open This File

Windows can't open this file: in windows 7 with ie 8, when i click on an embedded link in an email, i get the message "windows can't open this file: and then there is a long file name is listed. "To open this file, windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs that are installed on your computer.

What do you want to do?" I then select "select a program from a list of installed programs" and use ie, and it works fine. Links within the link work. I select use this program but it doesn't matter, it always gives me this message. I did a system restore and did a ie reset, but i think this started after the most recent windows critical update.

Media Player Has An Error And Can't Open That File

"windows media player has an error and can't open that file"-this happens even when opening an unrelated file or program. When trying to run simple programs or open a random file, wmp will open and pop up the error that it has an error and can't open the file. Troubleshooter says no fix, and there is no error #. It blocks me from opening things. I have windows 7 home premium and using the appropriate wmp. How do i get it to stop without having to uninstall it?

Error - Program Doesn't Have Permissions To Modify Destination Folder

I installed windows 7 32 bit (accidentally). I am now trying to install 64 bit (from download) and after unpacking i get the error that the program doesn't have permissions to modify the destination folder or something like that. Any ideas? I also tried to burrow down into the unpacked folder and run the 'setup' but it told me i was trying to install the 64-bit version over the 32 bit version, but i thought i was doing a 'clean install' and not an upgrade.

Error - This File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

Error box: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel". I am using desktop pc: hp windows vista hompe premium 32 bit. (Service pack 2) and my pc is updated with all the latest updates. My problem: when some one email me an internet link and i try to open the link in my internet mail, then this "set associations control panel" box appears on my screen.

I have tried everything to 'set this association' but i am unable to do it, because when i= click on start= open default programs= set your default program. I do not see my internet explorer in the default program box. Also, when i click on "default programs"= and open : " set program access and computer defaults"= my setting is checked on: "custom"= at: 'choose a default browser' the "use my current web browser" is checked. = 'choose a default email program' the "use my current email" is checked.

When i experienced this problem, i had windows explorer 7 on my vista (32 bit) and i downloaded internet explorer 8 and i thought that it would solve the problem. But it didn't. I still cannot open any internet website links that i receive in my email letters. (I do  not have any problems to open my internet explorer when i click on  my internet explorer link or to surf the web) my problem is only when someone send me email with a link to a webpage, on the internet (any webpage) then i cannot open the link from my windows mailbox.

Also when i open software like powerdirector 7 and when i want to create a 'menu' and i want to click on the "download more menu templates from directorzone" that will link me to the website on the internet the same "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Create an association in the set associations control panel" but again, internet explorer 7 (and now i downloaded ie 8) does not appear in my default program box that enables me to set an association. What can i do? Will the program "hijack this" help me in some way, to give you more information about this problem?(I do have firefox on my computer as well).

Program Install Error - A File That Is Required Cannot Be Installed

Program install error: a file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file setup has an invalid digital signature. Cabinet file setup 11. Cab has an invalid digital signature. When trying to install a software program on my windows 7 netbook, an installer information panel stated "a file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file setup 11. Thus the program would not load. Is the problem with the software or with the windows 7 netbook? If the netbook is the problem, can the faulty cabinet file be removed and replaced with a correct file? If so, how?

How To Open Web Folder?

Opening websites with windows explorer (not internet explorer)allow me to illustrate why i want to open a website with windows explorer and not internet explorer. My office uses a network scanner that stores generated scans to a website address. We could get to the folder by typing in something likehttp://123. 456. 1. 789/file_share in windows explorer.

But now that everyone in my office switched to windows 7, no one can access the files because attempting to open a website address automatically launches internet explorer, which is without the files list, and has fancy interface and customization and blocks any access to the files! My question is simple. How can i open a website address in windows explorer without needlessly opening it with the internet explorer?

How Do I Open A File As A Zip File?

I work with an application that packages files into "zipped folders" (yeah, just zip files), but uses a different file extension. It works exactly like . Gadget (windows gadgets) and . Themepack (windows themes) files work: you can rename them to .zip and open them with the zip viewer.

I want to skip the step of renaming it each time. I want to just associate the files with the zip viewer. In fact i don't need to associate it, just open-with a single time: i know if i can do it once, it will always be an available option on the right-click context menu of the files.

But i can't find which program is associated with zip files. I tried searching the system-32 folder.

File Download Search In Folder

I use windows 7 ultimate. Firefox latest version. I download music preview files, alot and i want to find a way to better short my file during download. e.g. Axwell - take this ( dj remix )

That is a song name. I have a music folder with many subfolders ( their name are based from source of download or genre ) my problem now is a have multiple ''double'' / alot of same songs in different folders, which take too much hdd space.

When i click download, i have a pop up window, ask for ''save as'' it direct me to my music folder, now i can see if i already own the file if it's written exactly the same (ask to replace file). But when i am into a sub-folder i dont know if i already have it in music main folder or another music subfolder. ( Lets say, im into c:/music/electro , i want to know if i already have that song in c:/music/house or c:/music or all sub-folder in music without having to look every folder before download. )

Do you understand my request? Is their such feature in windows 7?

Folder / File Permissions In Properties Tab

I have a particular program that will not start because i do not have write permissions for the folder, sub-folders, and files associated with the program. Going to the properties tab reveals that the folder is read only. I uncheck the box but can't seem to make it a permanent change. It always comes back up as read only. I have gone into every imaginable edit/advanced tab possible and given permissions to every possible group i can think of, yet despite the fact that every kind of permission possible is enabled and visible, i still can't uncheck the read-only box permanently and i still get "you do not have write permissions" from the program. I have tried changing ownership, running as administrator, and yet no progress on this problem.

.xml File Located In System32 Folder, Is Not Recognised

I have a problem concerning an xml document and windows 7 system32 folder. I have recently installed the latest driver for my nvidia graphics card and one of the files it loads is nvapps.xml into the windows7 system32 folder. I also use a programme called nhancer which modifies the nvidia programme for the benefit of ms flight simulator x (my hobby).

I now find that nhancer cannot load because it cannot find the nvapps.xml file in system32. If i highlight the nvapps.xml file in system32 and press open or edit, i get the message which says :- windows cannot find "c:windowssystem32nvapps.xml". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. (Actually, i get this message three layers thick on the screen (i.e. I have to acknowledge it three times before the message disappears from the screen)). I have found that there are ten *.xml files within system32 and five of them produce the above message and the remaining five all open easily and correctly. Of the five that windows cannot find two of them are associated with the nvidia driver and the other three are not in any way connected with that driver. I have also found that if i copy the nvapps.xml file to a different folder or hard drive, then i can open or edit it quite normally and without difficulty. I would be grateful for any advice or comment that about my problem.

Full File Address In Folder Explorer Bar

How to show full file address in folder explorer bar in windows 7? Is it possible to make the address show similar to xp (c:program filesadobe. )? It's extremely confusing as it is now, especially when in a mapped drive (i would expect the base level to show the mapped drive rather than "computer").

Unable To Rename File Open

I have just got a new computer with windows 7 w/ xp mode, 32 bit operating system. A big part of my job is to review quotes then change them to jobs when orders are received. One part of this is renaming the quote file to an active job file. Yet, almost every-time i try to rename a file, i get an error telling me that the file is open or in use by another program. I know that the file is closed. Why am i getting this error and how can i get it to stop. It is taking me twice as long to complete a project file package as when i had xp.

Open File Security Warning

Whenever i boot up right after i log in, this open file security warning pops up, and also prevents my dell dock from loading. I have a 64 bit dell inspiron laptop, and have been dealing with this for the past 2 weeks after i have downloaded a video file transfer software, and have been graced with this security warning ever since. I even uninstalled the video software to see if it goes away. It says.

Open file security warning
Name: appdataroamingmicrosoftsvchost.exe
Publisher: unkown
Type: application
From: c:users(my name)appdataroamingmicrosoftsvchost.exe
Then gives me two options to run or cancel

And then it asks me by checking a little box if i want it to always ask before opening this file, but it opens this anyway every time i log into windows when it starts up. This is ridiculously annoying and i am on the verge of giving my one month old dell inspirion laptop to my dog as a chew toy and going out and buying a mac just so i wont have to deal with these ridiculous random security warnings that microsoft has plagued it's consumers with time after time with their operating systems. Can someone please help me before fido chews through the hard drive?

Cannot Open File C:recovery.dat

I have been trying to install windows 7 ultimate and when the installation is almost complete, where its about to take me to the desktop, i get a huge fat red error, and on the top of the screen it says can not open file c:recovery. Dat. It stays there and the only way i can turn off my laptop is if i unplug it and remove the battery, i have also tried going into safe mode with networking witch has had the same results ending with the error screen. What can i do to continue the final stages of installing windows 7 and get my laptop in working condition again?

My laptop is a asus notebook n50vn sn: 8bn0as09004045h

I have seen this on another thread but it doesnt work. My windows 7 ultimate is on a usb and cant be burnt onto a dvd. Try starting your computer in safe mode, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
2. Tap the f8 key after your computer initially powers on.
3. Once you see the advanced boot options menu you can stop tapping.
4. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.
5. Select safe mode with networking and press enter.
6. You should see drivers loading, and then please wait.
7. You should then be at the welcome screen.
8. Logon to your computer using an account with administrator privileges.

Applications Crash When Go To File / Open

The issue started with office 2010. Go to file/open and the application crashes. Excel has stopped working, search online for a solution, or close the program. The issue has now expanded. I cannot attach a file to my email. App crashes. Same thing happens on file save as. I can open a file from explorer. Double click on a file and all is well. File/save works. The problem can be resolved by deleting the user, and re-creating it. But it does not take long for the problem to reappear. I have not been able to identify a specific activity that triggers the issue. Looking forward to a resolution.
