Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope with having to use 3 browsers to get the job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http' and click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Remove Ie8 64-bit

After a few hours with my 3rd party antivirus software help folks, they finally told me that their software works with win 7 - 64-bit but doesn't work with ie8 - 64-bit. I have ie8 - 64-bit loaded on my pc, along with the 32-bit version. I need to remove (uninstall) the 64-bit version.

If i remove ie8 via control panel | programs & features | turn windows feature on or off, by not selecting it, it's gone after a re-boot. However, when i then turn it back on, both the 32 & 64 bit ie8 appear. I need the ie8 64-bit to not be reinstalled (or uninstall ie8 64 bit ;^)

Anybody have any ideas?

Ie8 Streaming Audio Problem On Win 7 64-bit

Ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit quit streaming audio on windows 7 64 bit system. Adobe says flash is not available for 64 bit. This is a new intel i7 920 windows 7 professional 64bit 6gb ram. For the past week, ie8 was streaming xm and a local radio station, then stopped working abruptly tonight. With regard to xm, after clicking on 'listen now' button, the status bar says 'errors on page' and won't load the player. I cleared cache, cookies, etc. No luck.

I used the reset button for ie8. No luck. Deleted the google and yahoo toolbars. No luck. I then uninstalled ie8 and reinstalled. Streaming is now partially working but the player wants to install macromedia flash. I link to adobe who says flash isn't available for ie 64 bit. So i tried ie8 32 bit. It won't stream at all. So i downloaded mozilla firefox and it works like a champ.

Any ideas why ie8 is misbehaving with regard to streaming audio? The pit bull in me wants to see ie8 working again as it did initially. Applications installed today included the hp software and driver for my c7180 all-in-one.

Xp Mode Is 64-bit Or 32-bit In Win 7 64-bit

I am planning on purchasing win 7 pro & installing the 64-bit version. I intend to make use of the "xp mode" feature if i can install 32-bit printer drivers within the xp mode, as my photo printers have no 64-bit drivers. I currently edit my photography on a win xp pro 64-bit pc, which is networked to a win xp pro 32-bitpc in order to print images. I need to know if "xp mode" is 32-bit - even when installed with the 64-bit version of win 7 pro. I want to be able to convert/edit my photos in win 7 64-bit, then print these images using "xp mode" via the 32-bit driversi intend to installin xp mode- all from the same pc. Is this do-able?

Ati Radeon Sapphire 5770 - Win 7 64-bit Asks For 32-bit Drivers

I have windows 7 64 bit. I recently changed my video card for an ati radeon sapphire 5770. I had an nvidia before that stopped working. I installed the lastest drivers from ati for win7 64 bit (version 10. 5) after uninstalling those from nvidia. Everything seems to be working fine, but windows keep telling me that there's no drivers installed for my card, even tho i can access the catalyst control center. When i click on the link that windows provide, it always lead to the 32 bit version of win 7. Is it a known problem? Is there something i can do to correct that?

Multi-boot System Win 7 64-bit & Vista 32-bit On One Hard Drive

Multi-boot system windows 7 (64-bit) & vista (32-bit) on one hard drive - do i need two hard drives?I have an existing windows vista ultimate (32-bit) system installed on a 500gb sata hard drive, partitioned into 2 partitions (c: and d:). I would like to make the system multi-boot so that i can back-track to vista if i have a problem with win7.

One issue here is that i plan on multi-booting vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit on the same hard drive without touching the d: partition of the hard drive. I don't know if this is possible, but i'm interested to see if it is.

I've done some research and have found that win7 has many compatibility modes, so maybe i don't need to worry about keeping an installation of vista on my system? I just don't want to be "caught with my pants down" if something were to go wrong with win7, like if one of my programs was incompatible or something along those lines.

If i can't multi-boot vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit from the same hard drive, can i do it with 2 hard drives having one os on each hard drive? Or, am i being much too paranoid about this and should i trust microsoft on this one that win7 will not have any large compatibility issues with my most used programs?

For reference, here are some of my most used programs: firefox 3. 5, steam, adobe photoshop (versions 7. 0 and cs3), ie tester (for web development), winamp, trillian (an im and irc program), itunes, skype, mozilla thunderbird (for e-mail), and fraps (in-game video recording software).

I know that this is a lot all at once, but does anyone see any foreseen compatibility issues with any of these programs and win7 64-bit ? I'm also worried about the compatibility of some of my drivers with win7 64-bit, but i've heard that there have been leaps and bounds made with driver compatibility on win7 64-bit (as compared to the mess it was with xp 64-bit). Is this true?

Printer Sharing - 64-bit Win 7 And 32-bit Xp In Remote Desktop Session

Printer sharing - 64 bit windows 7 and 32 bit windows xp in a remote desktop session. Windows 7 machine with a local ricoh / aficio 1045 b & w multifunction printer attached. Works fine, uses 64 bit printer driver. This computer connects to a windows xp machine (32 bit) using remote desktop session (terminal services).

On the xp machine, i installed the 64 bit printer driver via printers and faxes -> server properties - drivers - add driver. I can see the driver there, successfully installed (have rebooted, etc). Despite this, the printer will still not show up when rd session is run. In event viewer, i can see there's an issue with it finding the correct driver.

I've used the terminal server printer redirection tool in the past to solve these problems (tspdrw.exe) which works great. The correct 64 bit driver is not listed as a choice when scrolling through options to reassign the driver. Hopefully that is clear, not sure what i am missing.

Can anyone tell me with certainty if the drivers will or wont work for windows 7?

Upgrading 32-bit Vista To 64-bit Win 7 Without Losing Files

I have two computers with vista home premium 32-bit oem versions on them. I want to upgrade both of them to windows 7 home premium 64-bit versions, without losing any files, folders or programs.

Can i use the same family pack license to upgrade both computers to windows 7 home premium 32-bit versions, then upgrade both 32-bit versions to 64-bit versions using the same family pack license?

Will this keep the original files, folders and programs intact? Is this a reasonable process that will get both computers to 64-bit versions? Or should i just upgrade both computers to 32-bit versions of windows 7, and live with it?

Dual Boot 2 Hard Drives Xp 32-bit With Win 7 64-bit

I would like to set up a dual boot system with windows xp and windows 7. I have 3 hard drives in my system now, one as xp system disc, another for storage and one unallocated that i want to install windows 7 pro(64). I want to leave my xp installation intact for now. I have been trying to research just what i need to do to install windows 7 on that extra drive and i am seeing all kinds of conflicting answers. First, i have all my original operating system disks so i want to purchase an upgrade version of windows 7 pro.

Specifically i want/need to know will i have to install windows xp first on that empty drive before i install windows 7, or can i just insert the xp disc as proof that its an upgrade as i have done with previous windows installations. I would just like to know what i am getting into.

I am asking because i have seen conflicting answers, such as:-i need to buy the full version (lets be honest, the upgrade price is expensive enough) because it won't let me do an upgrade. This just doesn't seem right.

I have to install xp first on that empty drive before i can install the upgrade version. No mention what-so-ever of the windows 7 checking for a previous version of windows even when viewing detail installation instructions regarding installing windows 7 on a separate drive with xp installed first on another. 95% of installation instructions assume you are just doing an upgrade right on top of the old windows xp installation, maybe 4% a dual boot where you are partitioning a single drive and i think my eyes are starting to bleed from reading and sifting through all the tutorials that don't apply to me lol.

Can i run 32-bit xp in the xp mode virtual host under 64 bit windows 7? I have a legacy program (for an alpha smart neo) that communicates via usb, and it is not compatible with 64 bit platforms.

I'm not sure if the 32 bit limitation is in a driver, or in the main manager program provided with the neo. On a related topic, can i load 32 bit drivers in the virtual xp under windows 7, assuming i can run 32 bit xp under 64 bit windows 7?

Rdc And Homegroup Do Not Work - Win 7 64-bit And 32-bit Network

I am having problems connecting my windows 7 pc's, i am currently running 64 bit ultimate as my personal pc , another 2 have win 7 32-bit. I also have 3 routers on the same network, but 2 are being used as switches ( dhcp turned off) and 2 other pc's are installed with vista 32 bit ultimate and win xp pro 32 bit on my trusty laptop. The network is stable and everyone has an internet connection. The problems started when i tried to setup a homegroup with the 3 win 7 pcs. The 64 bit win 7 ultimate sees only itself in the network and i cannot set anything up in this state , i have not yet made any modifications to any pc or router and through this forum can hopefully set something up that will accommodate all pc's. I also cannot get rdc to work between 64-bit win 7 and either of the other win 7 pc's. Laptop win xp pro is wirelessly connected and has all updates to date.

Will I Need To Upgrade All Of My Existing Software To A 64-bit Version, If I Use 64 Bit Win 7 ?

I am ready to purchase a new desktop computer with windows 7, but i am a little confused about the 32 vs. 64 bit decision. I understand technically what the difference is, but i am not sure what the impact on my software will be. At present all i have is 32 bit software running on both my desktop and laptop, some of which is quite old but still needed and very functional. I can't afford to replace all of my software, some of which have no counterpart in 64 bit. My new laptop is running 32 bit vista (less than 1 year old). Will i need to upgrade all of my existing software to a 64 bit version if i get the 64 bit version of win 7 or will i be able to use my old software with the new os? I also plan to upgrade to a new version of office. What impact will that have if i go to a 64 bit version? What about compatibility with my laptop and the existing 32 bit office on it?

Sound Problem With 32-bit Programs On Win 7 64-bit

64bit windows 7 rc, getting sound in 64bit programs, but not from 32 bit programs. About two weeks agoi had started my computer, there were windows updates that had installed the previous night. All seemed fine, but then when i went to go play a computer game, it comes to find out there is no sound from the game. After troubleshooting the game, i determined it wasn't the game that was the problem.

When i go to the directx diagnostic tool, and go to sound the tab, there is no sound card/driver, listed. Tells me to go and install one. But! When i run the 64bit version of dxdiag it actually picks up my sound card and drivers, and tells me everything is ok, no problems detected.

So i go and check to see exactly what was updated in the "review your update history" section in windows update, and all that was updated were "definitions update for windows defender. " So i go and do a system restore, and revert my computer to a time that was two weeks ago, assuming it would fix the problem. It didn't.

I still get sound through windows and internet explorer, just no sound when i play any game or other 32 bit application. I have a amd motherboard with realtek hd audio onboard audio card. I updated drivers through windows, no fix. I went to realtek's website, downloaded the drivers, used those to uninstall the old drivers and reinstall the new ones, no fix. I manually unstalled the old realtek drivers, and installed the new ones i downloaded from realtek's website, the problem persists.

So the conclusion i have come to is that i have a problem with directx11 itself, that it just wont recognize my 32bit side of the realtek drivers, and only the 64bit, i have searched for a directx 11 download, but can't seem to find one. So if anyone knows where i can download the directx 11 (i already tried getting it off my windows 7 rc cd, didn't work) or has any other ideas about my problem and how i can fix it.

Will 64-bit Win 7 Run 32-bit Xp Compatible Programs ?

Will 64-bit windows 7 run 32-bit xp compatible programs that are not compatible with 64-bit vista ultimate? I recently bought a new pc with vista ultimate. It's my first 64-bit system (long time xp user). I have encountered big problems with the new 64-bit vista.

Specifically, i have several programs which run on 32-bit xp, but will not run at all on 64 bit vista (vpn checkpoint client, and solidworks 2008 - both non-trivial items used constantly for work). I bought the computer never imagining that i would have problems with these programs.

In vista, the only option i've found to make these programs "work" has been virtual pc. With virtual pc, in your new vista operating system, you can set up a "virtual computer", and install an old operating system on it, where your old programs will work. Installing an old operating system within a new operating system polices the borders of common sense. Too - the programs you install on the "virtual pc" are not free to communicate with the "real" pc. So in the frustrating case of my vpn client, i only see it function in fairyland (i.e. The virtual pc).

I recall a similar issue that arose with the windows 98 transition to xp. I thought xp handled this well with its "program compatibility wizard" (as i believe it was called). Where did this function go? Will it return with w7?
