Win 7 Repair After Hard Drive Errors

My hard drive had some errors and corrupt sectors. I ran the tool to fix my hard drive and now need to repair the operating system. I am running windows 7 pro legal copy of course as always. What is the best way to repair windows 7 without having to redo my whole computer and start over. I know there are some files missing because of the hard drive errors because some weird things are now happening and some things do not work properly.

Magicjack - The Wrong Volume Is In The Drive

When i try to open a page from windows mail, i get a box with the above caption. It reads" the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume magicjack into drive g. "Has three choices to select, retry, cancel, continue. If you click on any one of the choices several times you then continue on to the page you have selected in the beginning.

How do i get rid of this box that is requiring this other step tp open pages? I have looked on line and found many others with the same problem with other installations so i know it is not the magicjack causing the problem. However, there seems that no one out there has a solution either.

Default Save To Location Reg Key / Save As Location To My Documents

Can someone please tell me the reg key that controls where non office documents get saved to by default when you click save. For most things it defaults to my documents, but what controls that. I am not referring to the places bar, rather the location that comes up when the save as dialog box appears. Currently i have users who when they go to save a copy of a pdf or create one using cutepdf writer it is defaulting to a network location that we'd rather they not save to. I want that save as location to be my documents. If i manually navigate to my documents and save and then attempt to save other pdf docs they default to my docs so i know something has to be keeping track of the change. Can someone help?Os is windows 2003 server and we have a citrix environment if that makes any difference.

Installation Failed - The Wrong Volume Is In The Drive

Windows xp to windows 7 installation failed. "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd". Trying to install a legal copy of windows 7 (not downloaded either, actually purchased disk). The disk is an upgrade disk and i am upgrading from windows xp (32-bit) to windows 7 (64-bit).

When i attempt to install it, when it gets to "expanding windows files" i get the error message "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd into drive d:" and the installation fails regardless of whether or not i click "cancel" "ignore" or "continue". What is wrong?

I ran a system upgrade check before and everything seems to be ready for the 64-bit.

This question has been asked before but no solution proposed on this forum that i found. Everything is is so slow too! Just to get to the initial installation screen takes 20 minutes and when it begins installation it stalls at 0% for 30 minutes before it throws me the error. How can this be so hard to upgrade?

Clean Installation Issues - Wrong Volume Is In Drive

Clean installation issues results various transient faults - mostly hangs. One reoccurring message is "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd"

I'm using a retail version of windows 7 premium that i purchased tuesday night. I've tried on and off for the past three nights to install w7.initially, i had xp on the machine and installed w7 via the backup of the xp files and using the network for additional patches. The install hung towards the end after i entered a password for the user account (e.g. Drives dead, mouse/keyboard unresponsive, etc).

So i hard-cycled the machine. At this point i was able to log on, but the dvd drive or my second internal drive would not function. I figured something had went wrong with the install over xp and i had no issues with trying a clean install, so i went for that it next.

Prior to the first clean install i removed my second hd and all usb devices to minimize the hardware in play. Once i started running the clean install i've seen mostly hangs during the file extraction process (3%, 11% - haven't got to 62% yet :o) ). One error message in particular i"ve seen is listed in the title "please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd".

Some things i've tried: the package and disc were in mint condition when i purchased them so hopefully there are no issues with the integrity of the dvd. My machines dvd drive is in decent shape and i have recently installed other operating systems and watched dvd's without a without a problem. I don't believe the disc or drive are issues.

I've messed around with turning off the floppy, usb and ahci support in the bios. I've tried installing the 32 and 64 bit versions. I tried to access drivers off the gigabyte cd, but that didn't work so much. At this point i'm open to new suggestions :d

My hardware:
Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l - http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16813128059
Wd raptor - wd360gd
E6850
Nvidia 8800 gt

Striping Existing System Volume / Disk Drive

I'm just wondering can i convert my current single os disk to be striped in windows 7? I'd like to get a bit of extra hdd performance but i don't want to have to reinstall windows. So i'm wondering if you can do this on a live system disk.

My board has some hardware raid support but i think that'll wipe the disks if i try and make a raid with them. I don't think the hardware raid performance on these consumer mother boards is that great anyway so a software raid will be fine if i can do it.

Usb Flash Drive Error - Volume Does Not Contain Recognized File System

I plugged in my usb flash drive into a computer using windows 7. It always prompts me to scan and fix or cancel. I canceled every time, but i got annoyed with it popping up every time, so i told it to scan and fix. A loading screen came up so i patiently waited. After completion it asks to format my usb flash drive. I can't format it though because i have homework files and all my other personal files on there. So i canceled the format, but every time i plug it into my computer it asks t format it. I even plugged it into a computer running on windows xp and it wanted to format it.

When i try to run it without formatting it it says, "e: is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. " My question is, what did windows 7 do to my flash drive and how do i recover my data?

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Volume "failed" After Assigning Drive Letters

I have a 300 gb hard drive on a win 7 ultimate system, partitioned into 4 dynamic disks. I reassigned one of the drive letters yesterday with the disk management plug-in. Now the disk management plugin shows the four pieces with the relabeled piece split into two pieces and shows a fifth volume of size 300g (the entire hard drive). The fifth piece is described as "failed" and "missing". In addition, the d: drive is now as labeled as the system drive, although c: is the system drive. Reactivating the missing volume does not succeed. Suggestions, anyone?

Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Compatibility Check

Attempting to install windows 7 ultimate 64-bit version on sony vaio laptop computer currently running windows vista home premium 64-bit version using the upgade option. Ran the install and got a compatiblity message about adobe acrobat 7. 0 as follows:

"Upgrading windows will affect the following devices and/or programs: these programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open control panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade. )

Acrobat reader 7:- i uninstalled the software in the manner directed by the message (i.e. Opened control panel, clicked on uninstall programs, clicked on acrobat 7. 0 and clicked on uninstall. The process said "uninstall successful". I then rebooted the computer ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor and everything was "good to go". I tried to install windows 7 again running the compatibility check this time and got the same message (see above).

I went through a full c-drive search (including hidden files) and found all of the files the matched with the search criteria "acrobat*7*. *" Found some files and file folders this way some of which i could delete without a problem, some requried changing the file permission. Eventually i erased anything matching the search criteria.

Reboot, retry to install windows 7 - result: same compatibility message. Allowed the install to continue. Almost three hours later with most of the install complete, got a message "cannot install removing installation files and reloading original operating system" or something to that effect.

Had sony tech support actually on my computer through their internet access trying to fix the problem and they found and erased a few more acrobat files and tried to install windows 7 with similar results. When the install screen hit the same acrobat 7. 0 compatibility flag, the chat i was on with the technician suddenly went dead.

I don't particularly want to play the "just uninstall programs until you get it to go" approach, nor do i want to do a clean install with all the legacy settings and software that is currently installed so.

Has microsoft addressed this with an option to install over the incompatible software (that is not there anyway)? Or are we all stuck wandering in the dark with expensive versions of windows 7 that cannot be used and equally troublesome vista os software.

Anyone out there have any answers or advise?

Cannot Run Check Disk

I can't check my system partition. I can't run some  windows functions: calculator, paint, screen saver, maybe it's can't find the file to run (it's icon become gray, screen saver: can't find rundll32.exe). But it's still in my hard disk and can run if i find it out and click. I also can't run firewall because it's dependence services can't start.

So i think partition is error and checked it. On windows, not successful to run "chkdsk" with command prompt. And after restart it's can't check with the note about need to install some software to check. I've just uninstall some soft wares, include "microsoft visual c+ 2005 redistribution" (there are microsoft visual c+ 2005, 2008. I think it isn't important).

Check Disk Problems

Bought my hp dv7 in nov & have had 3 computer crashes. I reboot and get a screen that says 'need to do disk check on c & type of file is ntfs'. Starts countdown & freezes. Have had it back where i bought it and all they can do is a complete sys restore. This weekend i got a message center msg saying that a sys scan/sys maint was scheduled so i clicked on it. Got msg: attempt repairs of disk volume errors. Reboot to repair problems such as bad sectors etc. Clicked next & got "issues found disk volume errors detected & a pop-up asking if i wanted to do sys restore.

Said yes & it said i couldn't because local c had errors & windows detected file sys corruption on c so had to do check disk. I scheduled a check disk & when i rebooted it actually did the count down & it actually completed the whole process & found no issues. Has rebooted without incident so far. In doing some research today i learned this is a windows 7 issue. I'm not computer literate so am afraid to do any of the suggested things without knowing which i should try.

One suggestion said it might prompt to insert the win 7 disk but i don't have a disk as the laptop came pre-loaded. All i have are the sys recovery disks i was prompted to create on the first boot up.

Windows Cannot Check For Memory Problems

I have a computer currently having windows xp os. I am trying to use windows 7's installation disc in order to use "windows memory diagnostic". The result is: "windows cannot check for memory problems". When the computer boots from the win7 installation disk i am using "system recovery options" after that.

However, the tool doesn't discover windows xp and it displays a message: "operating system: unknown on (unknown) local disk"my system has 512 mb ram if windows xp is started instead it works just fine. I have found a lot of information about "system recovery options" and corresponding problem 'unknown operating system' but none of them emerges in the similar issue i have.

Advisor Compatibility Check Error

I want to upgrade to windows 7 from vista. I assume that there shouldn't be a problem. After all, it is the same company right? After downloading the advisor, i got the same error each time. "Windows 7 upgrade advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please re-install windows 7 upgrade advisor and try again". I've done this a few times with the same result. Does this mean that i won't be able to upgrade to 7 or would i have to do a clean install? I really don't want to start uninstalling some programs to see what works and what doesn't.

Ide Channel - Dma/pio Status Check

I have been trying to check the dma/pio status of my system, but i couldn't find anything that mentions primary/secondary channel under "ide ata/atapi controllers" in device manager. From what i read in various forums, that is the way to do it, and also i noticed that a few people couldn't find the "primary/secondary channel" thingy as well. (But i couldn't find the solution to the issue)

My problem is that a couple usb ports (2 out of 4) that i normally used went slow when i transfer data to/from external hdd. Now i've been switching to the other 2 of the usb ports, and i could see the difference in transfer rate. This happened before with my xp system, but i could access the primary/secondary channel and switched them all back to dma, which is something i can't do now with my other system of vista. So now i would really like to check on that, and i need some help to do so.

My system:
Windows vista (up-to-date with all the windows update)
Intel core 2 duo p9600 2. 67ghz
4 gb ram
Nvidia geforce gtx 260 - 1 gb memory
Realtek/creative soundblaster

320 gb hdd (well, it's almost full, leaving about 20 gb of free space, but the problem i mentioned up there already happened when i still got 60 gb of free space like a couple months ago) it would be great if someone can help me enlighten my days here. I'm not a computer geek, but definitely not an illiterate as well.

Disk Check Accident During Bsod Repair Attempt

I have a lenovo z360 laptop that runs windows 7 home premium x86 on an intel core i3 processor. When i turned it on last friday, the windows logo showed for around 5 minutes then the bsod flashes. Technical information: unmountable_boot_volume 0x000000ed (0x87e0d798, 0xc0000183). I put in a repair disk and chose to use cmd so that i can chkdsk /r c:. After it successfully checked, i decided to also chkdsk d: so i wouldn't need to go past the recovery options menu again. It took around 5 hours before my maid unplugged it while cleaning, so it died while i was eating. I charged it somewhere else when my brother discharged it to use the desktop computer. He said that it said "deleting index entry from index $0 of . 25" when it died again. When i booted it again, it still shows the windows logo for 5 minutes but restarts with no blue screen.
