Recovery Problem - Startup Repair Will Not Work

I have been running a windows 7 32-bit upgrade from a windows vista oem lenovo desktop. I tried to reinstall windows 7 from the upgrade cd and i probably screwed things up. Right now i have a dark screen on the monitor when i try to start windows normally. If i try system recovery options, startup repair will not work and system restore says that there are no restore points. I have no system images, but i can get a command prompt that says microsoft windows [version 6. 1. 7600]x:sources> what can i do to recover?

Error Recovery - Startup Repair Won't Work

About a month ago i got a sony laptop with windows 7 home premium 64 pre-installed. It was working fine until two days ago, when i went to shut it down it began to do an update with the shutdown. Since then, i have been unable to get windows to start. It takes me into the windows error recovery screen, however, when i launch startup repair, it takes me to a new screen, but doesn't bring up the startup repair menu. I've also tried starting windows normally, and staring windows in safe mode, but it just blue screens and the whole process starts back over. Since i got the laptop with windows 7 already installed, i don't have an installation cd. I don't care if i lose all my data (almost everything is backed up), but i really want to get my computer running again. Any ideas?

Startup Repair Cannot Repair This Computer Automatically

Yesterday, i went to use my computer and it appeared to be hung up. I rebooted and windows 7 refused to boot. It went to the startup repair screen and gave me a message stating "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically. " As well as the following message:

Problem event name: startuprepairoffline
Problem signature 01: 6. 1. 7600. 16385
Problem signature 02: 6. 1. 7600. 16385

Problem signature 04: -1
Problem signature 05: autofailover
Problem signature 06: 7
Problem signature 07: corruptvolume
Os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 256. 1
Locale id: 1033

After reviewing more details it said that the file "fltmgr.sys" was corrupt. I can not boot into safe mode. I logged into my vista partition and extracted the "fltmgr.sys" file from the windows 7 dvd and tried to replace it in the system32drivers folder, but that did not resovle this problem. I also attempted to use system restore from the repair menu, but that won't work either. I have not made any system changes or installed any software recently. This same problem happened about two months ago and i was stuck reinstalling from scratch.

Creating Recovery Discs (not Repair Disc)

We purchased and installed windows 7 - 64 bit in two computers. Neither installation gave us notification to make recovery disks or the repair disc. We found the place to make the repair disc, but cannot locate where to tell the program to make the regular recovery discs. Can anyone tell me if we need to do this? Our daughter purchased a new computer with windows 7 already installed and it gave the option to create all of these discs.

Issue With Startup And Repair

So i have windows 7 on an alienware. It's been running great, but i recently started up my system and it was stuck at the screen that has the windows logo and says "starting". I turned off my system and ran the repair program. It eventually fixed the issue and started up, but now the system loads up about 5 times as long as before. It use to take under a minute easily and now about 5 but it does start up. I've run my anti-virus and no virus detected, i cleaned up the disk, and i turn off my system properly. Is there anyway to fix my start up situation?

Startup Repair Tool

Im using dell inspiron 1524 and windows 7 home premium. I use hibernation more often. I connect my projector on this laptop and whenever i start my computer resuming windows, i get message, windows failed to start and start-up repair tool gets started, but waiting several minutes i get a message start up repair tool cannot fix this problem, and it asks to send a report to microsoft. Then i have to restart my computer and again same repeats again. I tried memory diagnosis, chkdsk c: /f from command prompt but it does not report any bad sectors. But, when i used chkdsk c:/r computer takes a lot of time to complete the test. It goes up to stage 4 and takes long time. I tried to start in safe mode, but after loading 3-4 files start up again fails. What should i do now?

Startup Repair Boot Loop

Windows 7 pro 32 on a laptop (could be home premium, can't remember what was installed on this particular laptop). After an update yesterday, the system constantly boots into startup repair. Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically is the message i receive. The details have changed a couple times.

Problem event name: startuprepairoffline

Sig 1: 6. 1. 7600. 16385

Sig 2: same

Sig 3: unknown

Sig 4: 21201082

Sig 5: autofailover

Sig 6: 4

Sig 7: nobootfailure or corruptfile (have gotten both at different times).

Os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 256. 1

Locale id: 1033

I performed a system restore to before the update was run, back to an automatic system restore point. It didn't actually apply this. When the system rebooted it went back into startup repair and i thought i needed to go further back. It still had all the system restore points available, even the ones after the one i went back to, which i thought could be something new? I restored to a point further back, but when i rebooted it still came up for startup repair. This time, there
Are no restore points created, according to system restore.

I've run sfc with the proper switches to get it to point to the windows directory and i've run chkdsk just to make sure the disk isn't bad. One of the lines in the repair details said "root cause found: boot critical file d:windowssystem32driversatapi.sys is corrupt. Error code 0x490", but replacing it with a good file from a working win7 install didn't fix anything or remove that error from popping back up in a startup repair details. Another set of repair details says "root cause found: boot status indicates that the os booted successfully. "

My next step is to perform an in-place upgrade to the same os (a repair install) but wondered if there was anything that could be done to address this?  I don't know what update was installed. Should have written it down, but i didn't think about it.

Startup Repair Fails After Driver Updates

I had just completed driver updates on the high precision event timer and (i think) the pci bus. The system recommended a reboot. The restart failed at the "starting windows" screen. The 'spiralling' effect of the windows logo had jsut started when the system automatically rebooted.

The restart did not go to the "starting windows" screen, instead "startup repair (recommended)" and "start windows normally" were offered as options. I selected the recommendation and eventually was offered the following information:

Problem signature:
Problem event name: startuprepairoffline
Problem signature 01: 6. 1. 7600. 16385
Problem signature 02: 6. 1. 7600. 16385
Problem signature 03: unknown
Problem signature 04: 21200990
Problem signature 05: autofailover
Problem signature 06: 4
Problem signature 07: badpatch
Os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 256. 1
Locale id: 1033

The "startup repair diagnosis and repair log" shows:
A patch is preventing the system from starting.

Repair action: system files integrity check and repair
Result: failed. Error code 0x490
Time taken = 799427 ms

Are you able to offer me any advice?

System Repair

I was trying to repair my other computer becuase of a crash. I am using windows 7 professional. The repair console does not automatically find my operating system, and it allows me to browse for the file, but i only know i am looking for a setup file type, not what file i am looking for or where the file would be located. I really think that may be some nice information to have on your support page. It tells you to select the operating system in the steps, but nothing about what to do if the operating system is not automatically found. Can you help?

Sfc Cannot Repair A File

My bitdefender antivirus app said it found the trojan. Autoruninf. Gen virus. It said that the autorun. Inf in the "bitlockerdiscoveryvolumecontents" folder and the corresponding winsxs folder was the culprit. I have since used the win7 install dvd to boot to cmd and manually remove those files. My rescan for viruses now comes up clean. The problem is that the sfc /scannow fails. The cbo. Log file shows:

2010-02-23 08:04:46, info csi 000002de [sr] repairing 1 components
2010-02-23 08:04:46, info csi 000002df [sr] beginning verify and repair

[Ml:520{260}, l:94{47}]"?C:windowsbitlockerdiscoveryvolumecontents"[l:22{11}]"autorun. Inf"; source file in store is also corrupted

This leads to 2 questions:

1. Is there or is there not supposed to be an autorun. Inf file in said locations above and if so, how do i get it back?

2. If the virus was valid then is there a way to "reset" (so to speak) the sfc store (cache, catalog) so that it doesn't think it should fix that file?

Post Virus Repair

After a day and a half of cleaning i was finally able to remove the infections on my computer. There were a few keyloggers, couple of trojans and some adware. Now everything seems to work okay. However the viruses made some changes and i can't undo them. I am unable to download anything from the internet. Ie8 simply states that my security settings do not allow downloads and ff does download but deletes files immediately after. I have no idea how to fix that or where to even start looking.system restore was affected as well so i can't use that. Can someone help me figure out how to restore my settings without having to reinstall windows yet again?

System Repair Does Not Start

I'm having issues with my pc. It has 64 bit windows 7 and it sometimes does not start and when it does some programs are not responsive. Also, my system security is disabled. I can start it, but it really doesn't do anything and when i restart it goes right back to disabled. Btw, i have mcafee plus as my av. I've ran stinger, ad-adware and other programs and cannot detect any viruses or trojans. I've also noticed my clock is wrong by a day. I don't see anything funny running in the background but i know something is wrong. I tried to do a windows repair but when i select that option it just goes to a black screen and does nothing. Also, sometimes when i try to boot in safe mode it hangs on classpnp.sys.

It is hit or miss if windows will load. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I've put my windows 7 cd in and it doesnt, i've put a windows 7 repair disk and it sometimes will but it takes forever. I've even put an office 2007 and it does nothing. I've done memory test, and scan disk have not found any errors. When it does boot the interet works okay sometimes. Just like normal. Then it becomes very slow. One thing that never works is my outlook. It always
Loads then changes to "not responding" any ideas? I can't believe i can't figure this one out. I've always at a minimum was able to reload windows.

Bsod When Try To Boot Into System Repair

Windows media player and a few other programs freezing. (Bsod when try to boot into system repair). I have been having problems lately with windows media player freezing while trying to load files, also msn has been acting up. Log file: http://www.Megaupload.com/?D=w54gr6kn

Cannot Create A System Repair Disc

We have had this problem since first boot.

After
Start->maintenance->backup and restore->create a system repair disc , a grayed out dialog window comes up with "create a system repair disc" as title, but is immediately covered by another dialog window that says: microsoft windows repair disc has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

There is a choice of "debug" or "close window". Debug leads to the same dialog window without the choice of "debug" and "close. " Closes both dialog windows.

This activity will create errors in the event viewer but there is no information. The event id, source, and log fields are "-". Using recdisc.exe produces the same result. It does not matter if there is media in the drive or not. Re-booting does not help. Device manager says the matshita dvd-ram uj892as dvd drive is ok. The drive plays music and movies fine. Any clues?

Automatic Updates Service Gone, How To Repair ?

A friend of mine recently experienced an infection with a rootkit which was successfully cleaned from the windows 7 pro system. He then noticed a few days later that he could not use windows updates anymore, the function that can be opened from the start menu. A quick check of mine revealed that the service automatic updates was missing from the list of services. My guess is that the rootkit did remove that service or manipulated it somehow so that it is not listed there anymore, probably to prevent microsoft from patching the operating system automatically.

Now how can we get that service back? We do not have a system restore point before the incident. Reinstall might fix the problem but maybe there is a better solution, like registering a dll or something. A search on the internet revealed some tools and commands that either were not compatible with windows xp or that did not have any effect.

Can't Get To Safe Mode - Repair Loop

I have a win 7 64 bit pc that's i'm having an odd issue with. The system will boot and load windows normally, but i can't get to safe mode. When i hit f8, i get the options for safe mode and repair, etc. , But if i try safe mode it loads some stuff, then just stops and a get a black screen with "safe mode" in all 4 corners, a mouse, but nothing else. When i hit "repair" it gets stuck in a repair loop. I've read the tutorial on how to get out of that loop, but was wondering if that's what i should try or if there's some other problem. I'll need to ask a question later about why i need to get to "safe mode" but for now, anyone help on this issue?

My hard drive had some errors and corrupt sectors. I ran the tool to fix my hard drive and now need to repair the operating system. I am running windows 7 pro legal copy of course as always. What is the best way to repair windows 7 without having to redo my whole computer and start over. I know there are some files missing because of the hard drive errors because some weird things are now happening and some things do not work properly.

Repair Windows 7 Boot Menu On Uefi

I accidentally deleted the windows 7 boot entry in the windows boot manager. My laptop uses uefi instead of bios. The os is windows 7 64bit home premium. Here what i tried and its results: use startup repair: i tried to use startup repair from a windows 7 installation disk (actually, a usb). However, it said that the recovery options was not compatible. There are many causes as mentioned in causes of incompatibility and i was able to eliminate these:64-bit installation disk: checked windows 7 installer boot to uefi: don't know how to check cpu and os architecture are the same: processor (cpu?) Architecture is amd64, os is windows_nt (don't know if the same or not)
Many suggest to use startup repair but i don't know how to make this work.

Use bootrec following repair windows 8 efi bootloader: three commands finished successfully but i still doesn't see the windows 7 boot entry in the windows boot manager. Use diskpart: open diskpart from the command promt from the windows 7 installation usb. View full post.

How To Create Bootable System Repair Disk On Usb ?

How can i create a bootable version of a "system repair disk" on my hard disk drives or on a usb stick?

Explanations/why i ask the question: i have ordered a pc that will come with the 64 bit version of windows 7 ultimate and with 3 hard disks. My pc manufacturer/assembler told me, that they do not install bootable recovery partitions on the hard disk drives of their pcs.

Therefore, when i will eventually need to restore my system with the windows 7 "system image recovery" tool to the state of a previously created system image, i will need to use a system repair disc (that i have previously created on a dvd) to boot the "system image recovery" tool.

In principle, this seems to be sufficient, because it is hopefully relatively seldom that i will need to restore my c partition to a previous state (in the past, i did this mainly when participating in a software beta programs in order to restore my pc to the "clean and reliable" state prior to the installation of the unreliable beta-software).

I am however concerned about becoming dependent for the restore of a system image on a properly functioning dvd drive (they seem to be less reliable than, for example, hard disk drives). It would be a severe problem for me, to detect at the time of an attempted system restore, that my dvd drive is not functioning anymore.

Therefore, i would like to know if and how, i could reliably create for windows 7 ultimate (64 bit) a bootable version of a "system repair disk" on one of my internal hard disks or on an externally attached  usb disk or usb stick. I will appreciate to get a description (or to be pointed to a description) that a regular windows user can understand (i am not a pc system programmer and i am not familiar at all with things like the registry or sdks)

Windows Stuck At Loading Files, Can't Run Repair

Ever since i got a power outage friday my pc has been stuck at loading files, so today i managed to get my hands on the windows installation dvd, the problem is that i simply can't run the repair, not even using the dvd, directly through windows it simply gets stuck on loading files, no mater what choice i select on the boot manager, and through the dvd it gives me an kernell dll missing error, again no mater what choice i select on the manager it is the same error.

Error: file-system check failed, error: 126 clusters are referenced multiple times. Ntfs is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on windows then reboot it twice, the usage of the /f parameter is very important! No modification was, and will be made to ntfs by this software until it gets repaired. But, i obviously can't run the chkdsk /f since i can't get on windows. Seems the problem is related to the sudden power outage, but i don't understand why even the dvd is having problems booting up.

Disk Check Accident During Bsod Repair Attempt

I have a lenovo z360 laptop that runs windows 7 home premium x86 on an intel core i3 processor. When i turned it on last friday, the windows logo showed for around 5 minutes then the bsod flashes. Technical information: unmountable_boot_volume 0x000000ed (0x87e0d798, 0xc0000183). I put in a repair disk and chose to use cmd so that i can chkdsk /r c:. After it successfully checked, i decided to also chkdsk d: so i wouldn't need to go past the recovery options menu again. It took around 5 hours before my maid unplugged it while cleaning, so it died while i was eating. I charged it somewhere else when my brother discharged it to use the desktop computer. He said that it said "deleting index entry from index $0 of . 25" when it died again. When i booted it again, it still shows the windows logo for 5 minutes but restarts with no blue screen.

Win 7 Creates System Repair Disk Without Including The 3rd Party

Windows 7 creates "system repair disk" without including the 3rd party pci-sata driver required to see my sata drives. I upgraded a 2002 vintage pc with a siliconimage sil3512 pci sata controller and 2 500g sata drives. It was slightly annoying that out of the box win 7 did not include the drivers (when every recent version of linux i've tried did). I got win 7 installed by loading the driver when asked. I guess win 7 cannot include every legacy driver.

The surprising thing is that when i ask win 7 to create a system repair disk (presumably to repair the system used to create the disk) it leaves out the driver that it should know is required to make repair possible. Seems like sloppy work to me.

Os Recovery

I recently got a new hp all in one pc (model ms 227) and the first few days were spent exploring the changes from earlier versions of windows on previous pc's. (I used vista for a short time on my old pc, but after suffering a power supply failure which fried my motherboard, i had more recently been using my other halfs pc which wasnt a name brand, more like homemade pc running xp. ) Anyhow starting on only the 2nd or 3rd day of "learning through experimentation" i began to experience the "blue dump screen" syndrome. I attempted to restart the thing, and very shortly it happened a 2nd time, followed by a third. It seemed that it restarted slower each time until it finally got stuck.

As you maybe can tell, i am relatively "technologically limited", but am willing to try almost anything when nothing else seems to work. And one of the prompts that i was given was to "repeatedly press f11 on boot and run system recovery. (Can you guess where this is going?) Yes, i mistook system recovery for what i know as system restore. Anyway when the thing restarted again i received the error " no os system found". So apparently i inadvertently wiped my os from my hd.

As luck would have it this thing came pre loaded with the os (with no disks) and i, like an idiot, did not create the recovery disks i was advised to because i thought: this thing is brand new what can go wrong?  I'll do it as soon as i get done checking it out. (And now that i know what i did wrong, i.e: inviting "murphy" in) can any bosy help me put an os back on here. I'd hate to go out and spend more money (i dont have) on something if i don't have to.

Error Recovery

Im having some issues with windows 7, the screen is saying "windows error recovery, windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly. Startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. I have two choice's to choose from one is launch startup repair(recommended) and the other one is "start windows normally". I tried start windows normally , it just goes back to the windows error recovery screen and i tried launch startup repair that is recommended it loads and then it just goes to a black screen. I waited for it to do something but nothing happen.

Recovery Disk Gone

In the course of trying to resolve a problem with a "low disk space" error message that i have been getting i apparently my entire recovery drive (d:), about 8g.

I went to the "my computer" icon and right clicked and selected "manage", found the "disk management" section, selected my "hp-recovery (d:)", right clicked "format", changed from "fat32" to "ftns". The drive formatted and showed up empty. Then the directions i was following told me to right click on the new formatted drive and click "delete volume". It then talked about following some other steps about renaming the drive but mine has completely vanished.

So in conclusion, i'm an idiot. I deleted a recovery drive and didn't even fix the problem i set out to fix. Please if anyone can help i would be very grateful.
