Move User Folders Off System Drive

Move user folders off system drive? Want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not individually, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e.got a brand new notebook with win 7 home premium preinstalled. Using win 7 language. I shrank the hard drive volume to 55gb.

Made new simple volumes. I want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not by individually changing the location tab on dozens of folders, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e from the gitgo. In xp, i could just change the "my documents" link on each desktop to go to e*. * Instead of c*. *, But with win7?

Like windows home server and most wise os installations, the system drive is isolated and a drive or 2 or 3 for everything else.get a problem? Just restore the system drive.

User Folders On Desktop

I just installed win 7, did all the critical updates that came up (about 22 already), created user accounts, then in one of the "restricted" accounts i created a folder on the desktop where i copied some files from the old drive. Thing is, i turned the computer off last night, turned it back on this morning, got into that user, and the folder is gone! The search thingy cannot locate any of the files that i put there, like it was a totally clean install. Any suggestions?

Administrator Cannot See User Folders

My user account on windows 7 is an administrator (i know, i know) and my son's account is a standard user. When i log on to windows, i should be able to see his folders and files, right? However: i cannot! If i double-click on c:users(my son) i see "you don't currently have permission to access this folder" i don't know too much about permissions and all that, but this is what it says on the security tab for c:users(my son):

System - full control administrators - full control (my son's name) - full control. I have full control but i can't see his folders or files? Now that same error message also says "click continue to permanently get access to this folder. " So i click continue and now i can see his folders and files, because the security tab now has a new line:

(My account) - full control mission accomplished, i guess, but what i don't understand is, and it bugs me, if there's already a 'full control' for administrators, and i'm an administrator, why can't i get access to his account unless i add my user account (by name) to the security tab?

How To Move Program, Program(86) Data Folders ?

I'm going to install win 7 64-bit on a 64 gb ssd and i want my program files to be on my hdd or my d:/ drive. I've read a few articles that contradict each other - one that states to use a registry change, a microsoft article that states ms doesn't support such a registry change, and a suggestion that all one need do is to change the drive letter on the installation of the program.

I'd appreciate it if someone would help me understand the best way to change the location of my program files. I am also concerned about leaving my temp, tmp, and perf files on the ssd. Should those be moved? And if so, what might be a good way to do this?

Move Win 7 Installation To C Drive

I inadvertently installed windows 7 on the recovery drive in my pc - drive d, not the c drive as it should be. I completely messed up my pc - somehow i installed windows 7 on the small recovery drive in my dell laptop - not the c drive. Now, all my software is gone and i cannot even reinstall ms office, since it forces the installation to the d drive and there is virtually no space.

All my files and photos and music are still on the c drive. How can i move the windows 7 installation to the c drive where it belongs?

Move Win 7 To A Different Hard Drive

Okay i had originally bought windows vista 64bit hp oem for my computer. Down the road i downloaded the 64-bit windows 7 while i was in university. I only had a wd 120gb drive, and i now have 50mb of empty space :( (computer is running way slow, and i need to have more space) so i bought a segate 500gb 7200rpm drive. Anyways i wanted to know, how can i install 7 onto my new drive and use my current one as a slave. My main problem is i don't have the disk for windows 7 b/c it was an upgrade, but i do have the verified serial number.

I cannot contact microsoft b/c they want to charge me 70$ just to talk to one of their support people. (Ridiculous, almost the cost of another oem). I guess the way i would like to do this is install the second hard drive and copy everything over to it, and then boot from that drive and wipe the one i'm using now. Possible?

User Sets File Association Now System Restore Doesn't Work

On a brand new laptop the user copied some word files over, and they opened on the new computer just fine. Then they copied some more .doc files and they could not open them, so (they claim) they choose word as the default file association (which is fine, except it should not have prompted for that in the first place). After that all the word document shortcuts they created on the desktop changed to a shortcut with ie's 'e' symbol - clicking them flashes up a screen that instantly goes away (ie i assume) and ie's download file dialog then opens.

Further, an attempt to open ie acts the same way. Worse, running system restore does the same thing - flash, then ie files downloaded dialog - asking if i want to open one of the files listed (which are the . Lnk files to the word documents on the desktop). So short of doing a full system restore, and also short of manually copying the registry files from the last restore point (which i'm not sure is even possible on a windows 7 drive) what can i do to resolve this mess?

Cannot Rename Folders On Usb Drive

I open my usb drive from my computer, add a new folder, right click it and select rename. After typing the new name, i hit wnter, then, wham!, W7 shuts down and reboots. This is happening with all usb drives i put into the pc. Have i missed a setting or something in w7 that might be causing this?
When i whack the usb into my old pc running xp, no problems, i can add, rename folders no problem at all. Just w7 won't do it.

Upgrade On System With Raid 1 Drive System

What is the best way to upgrade a critical system with windows vista home premium running with two hd's in raid 1, to windows 7? I would prefer to do an in place upgrade, so that i would not have to reinstall applications or data files. One way that occurred to me, would be to disconnect one the hd's during the upgrade. If everything went well, i could reconnect the other drive (or better yet, a new clean drive), which would then be automatically mirrored by the hd controller. Has anyone successfully done this?

Dual Boot - Move Boot Image To Second Drive

I have a problem with two different drives both running win7, one 32 the other drive64, on a dual boot system. I want to pull the win32 drive, but it also has my boot information for the win64 drive. When removed it will not boot. I have been working on this for 5-6 weeks. I want to remove the win7/32 and put the boot image of win7/64 on the second drive.

I booted from the win764 install dvd, and went to there pair your computer. The placethat displays the operating systems installed, none will show. I have tried bootsect from the command prompt. It seems to work, but tells me no partition on the second drive. Or on another attribute used, it can not find the path to the drive. I have tried rebuild bcd, fixmbr, etc.

After Upgrade Usb Hard Drive Folders Are Empty

After upgrade from vista 64 to windows 7 64, usb hard drive initially works, then at some point all the "folders are empty" and i cannot access files untill i reboot. Then same thing all over again. My setup was working perfectly fine with vista 64; i had a 1tb  seagate freeagent external hard drive where i had all my pictures, music and movies. These media was monitored by my zune software, windows media player and windows media center, and also shared on my network.

Then i upgraded to windows 7 64. At first it seemed fine, windows 7 recognized and external drive, all applications were still monitoring my media from it, and i was able to access the files. But after a couple of minutes of accessing the files, the drive just seems to suddenly go offline.

I can still browse the folder structure, but the i don't see any files, and folders are empty. In some folders i see the files (maybe the info was cached) and if i try to access it, i get an error to "check the location of the file" or "file not available". Once i reboot my system, then everything seems back to normal but as soon as i try to access anything, it breaks as before. It fails even more promptly if i try to download something on to the drive.

All the usb drivers seem ok. The external hard drive works normally on my laptop that has a windows 7 32bit, so no problems in the drive itself. I tried removing all other usb devices (i have 7 usb inputs on and two more on my monitor), i tried changing power options so that usb ports are not automatically shut off by the pc, i tried reinstalling all the hardware drives including the nvidia chipset driver, i even reinstalled windows 7. The issue is still not resolved.

Files Copy Over Usb Drive Can Only See Empty Folders

Using transcend f25 external usb drive: files copy over but i can only see empty folders (drive size indicates that the files are still there, though).

I'm using windows 7 professional and everything seems to be working fine. I attached my new transcend f25 usb drive (300g) to use for backups. I copied over about 20 gigs of archives and had windows run it's first backup. Everything seemed fine, and the available space on the drive is now about 230g, which sounds right. The problem is, i can only see empty folders on the drive!

Now, i know for sure that the files are there because i tried plugging the drive into an old xp laptop - bingo there were all my files! Can anyone advise me? This seems like a configuration problem, or maybe a drive error. The files were there when i first added them, though, so it's very odd! How can i see my files?

Unable To Access Shared Folders On Drive Connected Via Usb

I recently set up a home network using the new linksys e3000 router, which provides a usb port for drive sharing, backup, and media streaming. I'm getting a message that says the folder access is denied, and i should contact the administrator for access. Fter spending several hours with linksys support, i was unable to solve the initial problem, which is to get full control over the files and folders on this drive. We did the following without success:remapped the drive. Made sure i was logged in as administrator.

Made sure the workgroup name was consistent. Ttempted to assign full control with permissions. This was particularly strange. When i set permissions to full control for any group or user, after clicking apply windows would attempt to set new permissions, but then the folder would go right back to having limited permissions. I was unable to edit. I'm assuming this is where the problem is. Ny idea why i can't change the permissions on these network folders?

Installation Cannot See Drive After System Partition

I recently got a hewlett packard 630 laptop which had linux os. I decided to replace it with windows 7 and face two major issues:

1) when i was installing win 7, it asked me to create a new hard drive because the 10gb partition could not fit win 7 ultimate 64-bit i wanted to install. I therefore created a 20gb hard drive and completed win 7 installation through usb. However, when i finished i could only see the 20gb hard drive and not the remaining 450gb.

2) i installed win 7 and ms office 2010 properly. However, the system is missing hp tools, such as network, ethernet, pci etc. As a result, i do not have internet. I tried a number of drivers from the hp site, with no success. How do i correct the problems above?

System Drive In Windows Explorer Is Wrong

I just installed windows 7 64 bit pro on a new computer all was well, until i connected to one of my network computes. Now when i open windows explorer my system drive is being showing as one of my network drives, not the one i opened on the network a drive from a different computer i didn't even browse to. Worse yet i turned off all the network drives and it still shows as my system drive on my windows 7 machine!. When i open a folder i see the contents of that network drive but of course none of the data can be opened because the computer is off.

I can not view the data on my system drive. I can not find my system drive anywhere but the computer is working. It is like the whole drive is hidden and an index of the network drive is being displayed as my system drive. And oh yes the name of the drive that is being show is the name of the network drive.

Big problem i can not get into my documents and settings folder. I am the admin, there is no password. Windows 7 thinks the documents and settings is on the other machine. The other machine is a winxp if that means anything. How do i fix this?

System Image Restore When Size Of C: Drive Changed

I have so far have had great success in restoring from system image (as opposed from system restore) for my windows 7 ultimate x64. Some small clarifications:1. On day 1, i make a system image of c: os (windows 7 ultimate) and system reserved partition (100mb). Say on that day, the c: was 100 gb in total size. 2. On any day after that, i modify the c: partition size to something different from 100gb. This could be because i am reinstalling windows 7 and thought to change the partition size or want to change the partition sizes or any other reason. Say, the c: is now 90gb or 110 gb or whatever, but not 100gb which it was on the day i made the system image.

Suppose, i am not happy with the result or feel the need to abort this install, and go back to my system image. 3. Will system image restore now work, considering that the c: is no longer the same size as on the day the image was made?4. Finally, windows 7 makes a system image called 'windowsimagebackup' or something. Do subsequent imaging overwrite this completely if i choose the same external hard drive i made the first image from.

Second, i have seen that if i change the name of the image say to 'windowsimagebackup290510', windows system repair disk no longer recognizes it. What is the way out. I basically want one partition with different system images say 'windowsimagebackup290510', 'win. Backup050610' and so on. But windows 7 restoring has failed for me when i rename the image file?

Striping Existing System Volume / Disk Drive

I'm just wondering can i convert my current single os disk to be striped in windows 7? I'd like to get a bit of extra hdd performance but i don't want to have to reinstall windows. So i'm wondering if you can do this on a live system disk.

My board has some hardware raid support but i think that'll wipe the disks if i try and make a raid with them. I don't think the hardware raid performance on these consumer mother boards is that great anyway so a software raid will be fine if i can do it.
