Program Interaction Between Xp Mode And Win 7

Original: using the windows xp mode of windows 7. I am considering using the xp mode but thought of something that might be an issue for our business. If i have a program installed on windows 7 and a separate program installed on the xp mode but those programs use each other will it work? For example, say i install microsoft office onxp mode and install an audit program we use on the windows 7 mode. The audit program actually puts a add-in into office so that you can do special things while inword or excel. Will that work?

Program Compiled In Xp Mode Does Not Appear In Applications

I just installed windows xp mode on my windows 7 pc and installed 2 programs in xp mode. When i returned to windows 7 and looked in programs under windows xp mode applications only one of the programs was listed. I was able to run that program directly from windows 7 but i can only run the other program from xp mode. How can i get the second program recognized in windows 7?

Program Shortcut Issue In Win Xp Mode

A program installed in win xpmode did not result in a shortcut appearing in windows xpmode applications in the (win 7 pro) start menu.

The program runs fine with xpmode open. Inside xpmode, short cuts are apparent. Does anyone know how to manually get win 7 to see an xpmode shortcut? Failing that, in a last gasp at functionality, could anyone tell me the command line code for accessing the host machine drives. Off hand, any code has to work as preamble (sent to dos) providing a context for the legacy program. The legacy program is an old version of gauss that worked in win 98 and nt4.

Uninstall Program Installed Using Compatibility Mode

I have been a satisfied user of adobe photoshop album 2. 0 for years and have a large library of photos and associated information that i wanted to migrate to my new windows 7 pro machine. I found that although the program would install and run in compatibility mode, the programs database is incompatible with win7. I have now installed the program in xp mode and things are finally running smoothly.

One problem: i would like to uninstall the copy of photoshop album which was originally installed on the win7 operating system. When i try to uninstall in the control panel/programs window, i get the error: this operating system is not supported and the uninstall shield wizard shuts down. I have searched for an uninstall setup.exe for this program and cannot locate one. Is there a way to use compatibility mode to run the uninstall wizard?

Adding Program Icon To Xp Mode App Menu

I installed an application w/in the xp mode virtual pc. After installation, there was an icon in the winxp application folder in my start menu. A few days later, i noticed it wasn't there anymore, but several other programs i had installed had icons there. I'm wondering if there is a tool that will allow an "after-the-fact" creation of one of these startup icons? I looked at the properties of the other shortcuts and see that it is pretty cryptic and contains a unique hex code, so i don't think this is something you can fat-finger.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. For the time being, i just uninstalled and reinstalled, but if it happens again, i'd like to save some time.

Program Crash When Running Filemaker Pro V4 In Xp Virtual Mode

Program crash when running filemaker pro v4 in windows xp virtual mode under the 64-bit version of windows 7 ultimate. With filemaker pro v4 running in windows xp mode under the 64-bit version of windows 7 ultimate filemaker crashes when i resize the xp window. Upon resizing the window the window goes black briefly and then it looks like windows xp logon popup gets initiated before restoring the screen.

At that time i get an error message from filemaker indicating that the file may be corrupted. Also, if i shut down filemaker and try to restart it filemaker will not start unless i completely shut down the virtual mode and restart it. This is a quite old version of filemaker but it has run fine under standalone os's xp and vista.

Windows 7 Freeze In Normal Mode, Safe Mode Works Fine

I am out of ideas. Three days ago my computer started freezing within a few minutes after startup. Freezes with no mouse movement and no keyboard. Must shutdown using the power button. Happens every time i start in normal mode. Safe mode works fine. I have done quite a bit of reading and tried a number of things, so far to no avail. Quite a few error codes present, here are some:

Winlog 6000
Service 7001
Distrib 10005
Service 7026
Event log 1101
Kernel 41
Browser 8032
Load perf 3011
Load perf 3012

I have tried restoring, turning off all non-microsoft services, disabling sound, updating video driver, memory test, adjusting bios per g skill tech forum. All hardware showing normal operation in device manager.

I can't find the minidump .dmp folder in c:/windows. The only location i find for .dmp files is in the watchdog folder, and there are quite a few in there. Let me know if i need to upload them.

My computer is a couple of months old and has been working flawlessly until this happened with one exception. (I have been getting occasional monitor blanking for a couple of seconds followed by a notification that the graphics driver has stopped responding and was successfully restored. )

Setting Live Mail Program As Default Program

I am trying to set windows 7 live mail program as a default program. It does not show up as an option on my "set default programs list". I know that i have it because i am using the program. Where else can it be? I asked this question earlier in the context of trying to attach smaller picture files to an email. I followed the written instructions in the help section and those of the person who replied to my earlier question(ramesh). They both said to select live mail from the default programs list-but as i said before it is not on the list. Do you have any other suggestions?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

How To Move Program, Program(86) Data Folders ?

I'm going to install win 7 64-bit on a 64 gb ssd and i want my program files to be on my hdd or my d:/ drive. I've read a few articles that contradict each other - one that states to use a registry change, a microsoft article that states ms doesn't support such a registry change, and a suggestion that all one need do is to change the drive letter on the installation of the program.

I'd appreciate it if someone would help me understand the best way to change the location of my program files. I am also concerned about leaving my temp, tmp, and perf files on the ssd. Should those be moved? And if so, what might be a good way to do this?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Xp Mode

Why can't microsoft assist with a windows 7 issue that has not been resolved in the three weeks since i installed the os? Microsoft support has not yet found a resolution to my efforts of getting xp mode to work on my computer.

1. I have installed windows 7 professional in 64 bit on a new 1tb hard drive.

2. Virtualization is turned on inbios.

3. I am running a 3. 22 intel cpu. My ram is 4gb.

4. I have downloaded, installed and uninstalled xp modeand windows virtual pc at least a dozen times over the past three weeks.

5. I am the administrator and only user of this machine.

Yet every time i attempt to install xp mode, i always get a pop-up window that says: "the virtual machine configuration could not be created. User does not have sufficient access right. " The windows 7 forums have not helped. Does anyone at microsoft have any ideas how to fix this program?

Everything else (except a few dated drivers) on windows 7 appears to be working perfectly.

Classic Mode

How do i run win7 in the far far superior classic mode. I despise the fluffy and glitzy 'look pretty' interface of vista and vista-ii (aka win7). W7 has a small handful of new features that are very nice, but the vast majority are just things that are for looks. All of these are things that i'd just as soon not have to look at. Alt-tab works just fine for me. I don't want pop ups all over the place when i hover over the task bar. I don't need any transparent thumbnail previews.

I really just want my os to be clean and simple to use like in classic mode. Just tell me how to set w7 back to the clean and simple classic mode that made my computer so easy to use please. Otherwise i see no real reason to justify spending $200 on yet another 'you gotta have this' piece of software that really only offers a small handful of features that i will use.

Virtual Xp Mode

I'm testing running the virtual xp mode machine off it's own nic instead of natting. First i installed via nat and all works well but when downloading on either machine, one slows. So i decided to install a separate nic, told the virtual machine that was it's connection, and now it's running off of it's own ip, etc. The problem now is that it seems to have slowed the opening of programs on the virtual machine. Are there other settings i'm not configuring to make the virtual machine respond like it's suppose to?

Xp Mode Problem

I bought windows 7 professional, because my kids have games that need xp to run. I dl'ed and installed xp mode and virtual pc, installed zoo tycoon 2 for my son and i'm getting a no video memory error message. If i'm getting this error message when trying to run zoo tycoon 2, how in the world am i going to be able to run autocad 2005? Did microsoft sell us a bunch of lies? After reading some interesting articles about xp mode i'm now discovering that my anti-virus doesn't even provide me any protection while in xp mode.

Can anyone out there provide me some real answers as to why i need xp mode and how i can get it to work?

God Mode

I got an information from one web site about windows 7 god mode.

Although its name suggests perhaps even grander capabilities, windows enthusiasts are excited over the discovery of a hidden "godmode" feature that lets users access all of the operating system's control panels from within a single folder. By creating a new folder in windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string at the end, users are able to have a single place to do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition.

The trick is also said to work in windows vista, although some are warning that although it works fine in 32-bit versions of vista, it can cause 64-bit versions of that operating system to crash.
To enter "godmode, " one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:
Godmode. {Ed7ba470-8e54-465e-825c-99712043e01c}

Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I'm not sure it's my idea of playing god, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls. Can anyone please give some more details about this. Because i couldn't see microsoft say this as a feature. So is it safe to do?

Printing From Xp Mode

I have read many postings across the internet and the various microsoft offerings and none have solved the issue at hand.microsoft state that when an xp application is invoked seamlessly or xp mode is invoked i should be able to share the native printers that have been set up in windows 7.
This is not so.

It is not possible to "see" the native printers from with xp mode, nor is it possible for the invoked applications to print, nor is it possible to add a printer to the xp mode. I am running on a toshiba t130 which is equipped with a non hardware assisted virtualization processor. I have pressed ahead with the installation of windows 7 and the xp mode etc on advise from toshiba and microsoft. This now represents a significant investment of time and money bot of which are in short supply. Please do not now tell me that hav is essential - contrary to current documentation etc.

Questions :-
1. I have no tools tab on my installation of the xp mode within the virtual machine. Is this because there is no hav present on this machine? Obviously all the tutorials etc refer to this.
2. If this is the case please can someone direct me to correct document for the windows 7 virtual pc and xp mode where hav is not available. - I do not actually believe that any such documentation exists.

3. Please can some one explain how to add a printer to xp mode. I have been through a zillion forums where every one states this is as easy as falling off a log - but to my extreme frustration no one actually explains how this is done. Indeed at this time i do not believe that it can be achieved.

4. In the absence of any ability to print directly from applications invoked from the xp mode what alternative process is available.

Xp Mode Not Usable

I want to load and run old software which will run on my xp machine. I loaded w7-pro, then xp mode, and then w-virtual pc. Then i was informed via warning box that i needed, and don't have, a hardware visualization function on my cpu. No, not just bios, the hardware!  I just bought my computer saturday, a new asuz laptop with w7 installed right on it. Why do i now need to have hardware on my brand new computer, which i didn't know about before, just to run xp mode?  Is ms working on a solution that doesn't require additional hardware?

Xp Mode Too Slow

Recently i bought a new hp computer with dualcore processor and 5 gb of ram, 64 bit system, which came with windows 7 home edition, and i intend of using it with my mastercam x3 64-bit. My software is not compatible to windows 7, so i bought the upgrade to windows 7 pro to be able to use the virtual xp mode. The installation went smooth, but in virtual xp mode the mastercam runs unacceptable slow. I dedicated 3gb ram to the virtual xp with no success.

Mastercam dealer told me that is the computer not running fast enough because the program run much faster on a old regular xp machine. In fact the task manager in xp mode, shows me only one core processor (although the computer has dual core, which is visible in w7 task manager) which is used 100% anytime i do any small task in mastercam.

Has the virtual xp mode just an emergency use under w7 and is it known to be slower? Will i get better result from xp if i downgrade from windows 7 to xp pro?

Downloading Xp Mode

I am trying to download windows xp mode for windows 7 professional for a brand new laptop of my boss from my windows vista business machine. But it is unable to do so, as microsoft requires authentication. I am an it guy and i have registered his windows 7 on my email id. If microsoft needs, i can provide it. I cannot download windows xp mode in my office as it is 500 mb is size. Moreover, my boss is not having enough time to spare his laptop for downloading this software and thereby reducing the speed of internet at his own end for other activities like downloading emails on ms outlook, using video chats etc. Can anyone suggest what can be done?

Where Is Xp Mode Installed?

Windows 7 ultimate x64. I ran the installation for xp mode. At the end of the installation there was a check-box to run xp mode on exiting the installer. I unchecked as i had some other things to do. I am now trying to find how to start xp mode. There isn't anything on the start menu for xp mode so how do i start it the first time?

On a side note - why is the installation package so dumb about where to uncompress its files to?  The installation package was on an internal sata drive with almost 300 gb free in the partition. The c: drive is on a sata drive with 183 gb free in the partition. So where does the install uncompress to - to my x: drive which is an external usb drive. Needless to say the file copying was a bit long.

Protected Mode Off, But It Is On

I have a generic desktop i built myself. I have just gone from xp to windows 7. Ie 8 says down the bottom "protection mode: off" but it is on? This was a fresh custom install. Just to give you som idea of protection, i run norton's av 2010 ( just av not suite or 360) with zone alarm pro firewall and forcefield. My toshiba satellite pro l300 was an upgrade from vista, same protection programs, the only difference the laptop says "protection mode:on" in am cert.

3 microsoft vista configuration course accredited and even this has got me stumped. I have tried repair etc. I had ie8 when using xpand vista and it always and so does this come up when open, bottom left "with errors on page". Same protection on both pc and laptop prior to migration.

How Do I Install Xp Mode On 7?

I need to test a camera that only has xp drivers, but i have a 7 pro computer. So i decided to install the xp mode, but i am running into a problem.

I went to the microsoft website where the downloads are located (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx?Rungenuinecheck=true&system=4&lang=1&buttonclicked=winxpmode). It nicely lists the steps that are necessary. The first step (marked with download/install this first) makes me download a file called windowsactivationupdate.exe, and instructs me to install it and then click the "continue" button.

The program i downloaded is 156 kb, not the 500 mb that is mentioned on the website, and i suppose it is just a program to check the validity of my 7 installation. However, when i install it, nothing happens. I am left on the website with 2 options: download and cancel. Pressing download only downloads the .exe again (and starting it only tells me that it is already installed, pressing "cancel" gets me back to the original web page. I can click the "first step" again, and the while circle starts over.

Either i am doing something wrong (what?) Or the windowsactivationupdate.exe is supposed to do something that it is not. I don't see a new program icon or folder either after installing it, so i can't start anything manually.

How do i install the xp mode?
