Excel Documents Keep Moving On Desktop

I am running windows 7 64-bit, all recent updates installed, but this will probably work on most windows 7 machines. I do not have an english version of windows, but i'll try to explain reproduction. I like my desktop icons to be organized, so i do not use auto arrange. I group icons in my own specific way. The left side of my screen is almost empty. My problem is that when i edit an excel document that resides on the desktop, the icon moves to the default (left side) location of the screen. Here's how:

1. On your desktop, turn off auto arrange. (Right click on desktop -> menu "view" -> item "auto arrange")

2. On your desktop right click somewhere on the right side of the screen and create a new excel document. (Right click on desktop -> menu "new" -> item "microsoft excel-document").

3. Make sure the new document is not on the default location (left side) of the screen. If it is, goto 1 or try to drag it to the right side of the screen.

4. Open the excel document you just created, and save it (with or without editing). (Saving with ctrl+s, so not "saving as. ").

5. View your desktop again by closing or minimizing the excel document. The icon has moved to the default icon location. I have tried this with other documents, but only excel documents seem to be moving.

Moving My Documents Folder

Shortly after installing win 7 64 i moved "my documents" by some simple method i don't now recall (it was 6 months ago). I need to correct the situation now. Sometimes i have software installs fail because they are looking for h:my documents and it no longer exists. I have also removed hard drives since then. I also want to setup for a ssd drive keep the os and program folders on c: but data on a different drive. I still have c:usersbmacdmy documents right click doesn't show the location and move option. Permissions shows i have full control and i am an administrator on the system.

My registry shows entries like this for my documents personal reg_expand_sz h:my documents bruce but like this for others my pictures reg_expand_sz%userprofile%pictures i no longer have an h: drive but have all my data stored on f: in the root. Can i search and replace my registry and replace h:my documents bruce with f:?

Moving Toolbars Off Taskbar Onto Desktop

I am a great fan of toolbars (i do not like having a million icons on my desktop, and do not display desktop icons). Instead, i have (with xp, for example) created toolbars of related programs from folders of shortcuts. I then pull them off the taskbar onto the desktop to a convenient spot. I find that in win7 i cannot get them off the taskbar! I get the 4-way move arrow, but it does nothing except move the toolbar back and forth on the taskbar. I usually have about six toolbars and that is too many to have on the taskbar all the time! Sniffle, sob, weep!

Desktop Icons Changed To Excel Icons After Update

"all desktop icons changed to office excel icons after windows update in windows 7". Two of the desktops at my work place installed updates for windows 7 automatically. After restart all desktop icons were office excel icons and were not able to be opened. After a system restore the icons went back to normal and were able to be opened again. I wasn't here for the update and was told of the issue third party. Not sure what update it was but it was a critical update from what i was told.

Problem Moving To New Drive

Here is the situation. I had vista running on my computer. When i bought windows 7, rather than do an upgrade, i did a clean install on a 2nd partition on the same drive. The boot manager remained on the vista partition and i can dual boot.

I just purchased an ssd drive and want to put my windows 7 on that drive and i no longer need the vista setup. I used norton ghost to clone my win7 partition onto the new drive, removed the other drive and tried to boot and when it failed, that was when i realized that win 7 partition didn't have a boot manager (since it was on the vista partition).

I plugged the old drive back in and rebooted to the original win7 partition and used easybcd to change the boot drive. This create the boot directory and loaded the boot manager on the new drive.

I again removed the old drive and tried to boot the new ssd. It started loading windows, but after it said "welcome" it then went to "preparing desktop" and stayed there for a long time. It eventually just showed a blank blue background with text saying it wasn't a genuine version of windows in the lower right. I never got a start menu or any option to activate windows or anything, just a blank screen.

I put the old drive back in again but continued to boot off the new drive. This time, it booted but the ssd drive was f: instead of c: (same as it was when i was booted onto the other drive and ran easybcd). Also, it appeared to be some sort of frankenstein boot, where f: was the system drive but it was running programs off of the c: drive (the win7 partition on the old drive that this drive was cloned from).

So i think the problem is that whenever the old drive is in the system, it insists on making the ssd drive be the f: drive, but it still expects programs to be on c:. When the old drive is not in the system, i think maybe it is still f: for some reason (i can't confirm since i never get a start menu and can't run any programs). I think maybe i don't get a start menu because the system drive is f: but it is looking for files on c:?  Otherwise, maybe it is c: but it is looking for some stuff on f:?

I tried using disk management to change the drive letter f: to be c:, but it just says invalid parameter and fails. I don't understand why it is insisting on keeping that drive as f:, every other time i've done a dual boot, whatever partition gets booted becomes c:. Anyone have any ideas on how to force this drive to be c when i boot it?

Moving Win 7 Install

I currently have my windows 7 installed on my 500gb hard drive but i am about to buy a faster solid state drive, probably about 60gb to install windows onto, . I was wondering if there was anyway to move just my windows installation and maybe a few programs (but i could do that on my own) onto the new drive. I have read about migrating files and thats not what i want to do, i want to keep the majority of my files on my 500gb hard-drive and just put windows and few programs on the ssd.

My first though about was to just do a clean install of windows 7 on my ssd but then i realized i don't exactly know where my product key is. If anyone has any thoughts on how to just migrate windows or how to locate my product key on my valid windows 7 that i am currently running. Although i got my windows 7 license oem it should work on a new hard drive with the same mobo right?

Problem Moving Files

How do i move a a file from one folder to another so that there are not two copies? For example, if i want to organize my pictures there is not option to move a picture, it only has the option to send, and then there ends up being an extra copy. On my previous computer (dell) if i wanted to move a file it would allow me to highlight the file or files that i wanted to move and all i had to do is select move, on the left hand side there was a task bar that gave me that option then it would allow me to choose the desired  folder i wanted to move the file(or) files to and i could move them without having an extra copy. When i try to move a file or files on this one i end up having to send them, to another location which leaves a copy.

Moving Win 7 License To New Pc

I have windows 7 ultimate (x64) on my laptop. The laptop is failing and i'm buying a new one that has windows 7 pro on it. Once i have moved all the data from the old laptop to the new one, how do i move the windows ultimate license? This is not installing the same license on 2 machines, which i know is not possible. I purely want to move the license onto the new machine. The old machine is going back to the manufacturer.

The license on the old laptop is either a retail one or an msdn one , as i got a retail license and msdn license (from work) and installed windows 7 on two of my laptops around the same time.

Moving Photos Around Within A Folder

I have had windows 7 for only a week now after having vista for a few agonizing months. I was really happy with xp but i had to purchase a new computer that came with vista. After having so many problems i upgraded to 7. My wife and i take alot of pictures and the click and drag feature was really great for us. I spent a couple of hours on 7 trying to arrange pictures in the order that i want and had no success. Please bring back the click and drag. If i could figure out a way to put xp on this new computer , i would do that.

Desktop Freeze When Programs Work Behind Desktop

Windows 7 desktop freeze when all other programs work behind desktop. When using any program, the desktop freezes so no icon can be selected/program opened. The only way to clear the freeze is to shut down. If however one chooses to use a program behind the desktop - it works fine. Anyone ideas how to prevent shutting down as the solution? I haven't heard anything like this on any other platform. At 1st, i thought it was a wireless freeze matter.

Moving Win 7 To Another Hard Drive

I'm trying to move my windows 7 partition to another hard drive but i'm having trouble. The source hard drive is a 1tb with the windows 7 installation (40gb) and another 900gb partition. The destination drive is only 160gb but it is enough for only windows. I used a parted magic live cd to clone the system reserved (100mb) and the windows (40gb) partition to the new drive.

Upon booting that drive it told me to insert the windows dvd to repair the installation. After that windows booted but i couldn't do anything as it said it was not a genuine version. Is this because it noticed it was on a different hard drive? How can i move it to that drive?

Moving Re-using Win 7 Product Key

I have win 7 pro installed and activated on my desktop and have installed it on my laptop but have not activated it yet. This is a retail version. I'm running 64-bit on both machines. I bought win 7 ultimate (also retail) and want to use that key on my desktop and then use the pro key (in use on the desktop) on the laptop.

Can i do this? How do i do this? If, for some reason this is not doable, then can i use the ultimate key on the laptop (win 7 pro installed but not activated) and how do i accomplish this?

Backup And Recovery, Moving Backups

When i set up the automatic backup, i directed it to use the space i had available on a hard drive. Within a few days, it began to give me "low backup space" messages.

I have since bought an external hard drive and have redirected backup and restore to store backups there. I am still getting frequent "low backup space" messages for the first drive i used.

1. How can i convince the system that it needs no more space on the first drive because i will not be storing any more backups there and to stop telling me about the "low backup space"?

2. Can i move the backups from the first drive to the second drive so that all of my backups are in one space and the space on the old drive is freed for other purposes?

Moving Win 7 Upgrade To New Hard Drive

I recently upgraded my windows vista to windows 7 pro. Then i realized my hard drive was too small and ordered another. Can i clone or image my current hard drive to transfer win 7 to the new one? What if i don't have an external hard drive to use for the transfer? Shall i make my old hard drive the master and my new hard drive the slave? I would prefer to have the os on the new hard drive.

The old drive is partitioned and the c:/ partition with the os is very full. I think i would like to reformat it and use it as a back-up drive with the new drive as the master. What is my best solution short of buying the full version of win 7?

Bsod When Moving Win 7 Hard Drive To Amd

Moving my windows 7 hard drive to my new amd quad pc. Bsod when the windows logo starts. How can i fix? I have windows 7 running on my old amd 64 pc and i want to move the hard drive to my new amd 9950 quad pc. Upon boot, it starts up fine and when the animated microsoft logo starts, it freezes and goes into a reboot loop. The error code is:

Windows 7 error, 0x0000007b (0x80786b58, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

If i plug the drive back into the original pc, boots up perfectly! What's the secret on this? I even tried usign a system restore that i created in windows 7 to a new hard drive and still get the same error. I really do not want to to a new - clean install as i have so many apps loaded. It'll take almost a whole day to re-install all of them.

Boot Failure On Moving From Native Ide To Raid

Moving from native ide to raid onchip sata type causes windows boot failure.

I installed windows 7 a few months ago and the install went rather well. I installed windows 7 on a dedicated sata hdd (c drive) and i have another sata drive that i keep my audio and video files on (d drive). Well. . . Today i decided to make a change.

I bought two new hdd's that i'd like to run in raid-1 that will replace my current d: drive. So, i crack open the manual for my motherboard (gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h) and it says i need to change the following in the bios:

Under the "integrated peripherals" menu set "onchip sata controller" to "enabled" (it was already enabled), secondly set "onchip sata type" to "raid" (it was "native ide"), lastly set "onchip sata port4/5 type" to "as sata type" (it was unset).

So, i've noticed that after i change "onchip sata type" to from "native ide" to "raid" and reboot my pc that windows doesn't load :-/  instead, it loads the "windows startup recovery manger" which runs for a while and then indicates that it cannot repair the problem. Going back into the bios and changing the  "onchip sata type" back to "native ide" allows me to successfully boot windows 7 again.

So, what gives?  I really don't understand what "native ide" means, or for that matter what "onchip sata port4/5 type" means in the bios, but i need to change these settings so that i can build my new raid-1. Can you tell me what's going on and how i might progress. . .

I think that maybe i need to install the sata controller driver from the motherboard manufacturer so that windows 7 can recognize the hard drive. . . But that's just a guess. If that's the case i guess the question becomes, how do i install the sata controller drivers after windows 7 has already been installed.

Moving Drive With Win 7 To Backup Computer Without Activation

I would like to come up with a way to provide a full backup computer to my customers (offline, process control application). Currently doing this with winxp and a hot-swap raid-1 enclosure. If anything in computer1 dies, can quickly move the cables and the drive over to computer2, boot up and keep running. Now moving to windows 7, more strict activation issues. Getting a separate windows license for each computer is not a problem, but how to either change the license key easily after the swap, or avoid activation altogether?

Typical system is offline, possibly abroad and would like to make the fail-over as easy as possibly for customers. Currently using oem license but open to other ideas. Have tested with retail copy of windows 7 pro and get 3-days to activate after moving to backup computer, same as oem. Would volume licensing help me here? Other ideas?

Open Documents In Ie

Recently i have noticed that word and excel documents accessed via ie (7 or 8) do not open in their own application. Instead, they open in what appears to be half browser/half application. Once the document is saved, it is then shown in its native application. This is a change to the way documents used to open in ie, and i was wondering why this change was made.

I know it is browser related because i have tested it on several sites with the same results, but documents opened in firefox open in their native applications. I know this is going to cause a problem with some of my customers who are not very computer literate. Is there a setting that can be changed to avoid this?

Getting My Recent Documents

How to get "my recent documents" in windows 7? I need "my recent docs". I purchased win7pro because i assumed it was created with professionals in mind. People who rely on their computer for their lively hood rely on "my recent docs" for a million things. The "recent items" function does not seem able to locate any but the last version. When an earlier version is shown in he jump folder, windows can't find it. I need to know what i did yesterday, last week, and in 2002. Xp does that, (pro and home b. T. W. ). Please tell me there is a setting some place that i just haven't found. Everyone in my field relies heavily on "my recent docs". I can't believe it is gone.

Security Notice Excel 2007

Trying to refresh an excel report on a network drive. All works fine with win xp pro and office 2003 or 2007. Every windows 7 pc with office 2007 get the same errors. Don't feel that it is an office problem cause 07 works fine with not setup on all the xp machines.

First error i get is: ms office excel security notice. Mo has identified a potential security concern. The operation connects to an external data source. I click ok and this is fine. Second error pops up immediately. Ms office excel. The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following: (all of the following are correct. ) Ms wants me to check folder existence, read-
Only, make sure filename does not contain certain characters, and cannot be more that 218 characters long.

Third error: ms office excel invalid web query

All i got, any ideas? I know all the errors came from excel but this works fine on all windows xp pro pcs, all we have changes is going with windows 7. I figure that something is checked not allowing to connect to external data sources in windows 7 or some security setting.

Excel Insert Picture Does Not Display

We have 2 identical dell systems, one with xp and one with windows 7, both running office 2007. When i create an excel document on the windows 7 system and use the insert picture option, the document will open on other systems but the picture does not display (just the outline of the box). If i create this same document on the xp system everyone can open the document and see the picture. The file is being saved on a server running windows server 2003. Even systems running windows 2000 can open the xp version of the document. I don't know how to solve this problem other than to downgrade to xp (not a pleasant experience).

Excel 2007 Styles Reproducing

I have an excel spreadsheet with many macros and a lot of code automation. Periodically, when i go to use a style, i find that the custom styles menu has dozens, even hundreds of styles in it, with names like normal 1, normal 2, . Normal 5, normal 37. 1, normal 37. 2, etc. I can only delete them one at a time, but after i spend an hour clearing the list, they are back a few days later. What is going on?

I have written much of the vb code in the macros. I have not been able to pinpoint when the styles are being created, but i assume it is someplace in the code. Can anyone help?
