Two Separate Program File Folders

When i transfered my files from my old windows xp pc to my new windows 7 pc using windows file transfer it created two distinct "program files" folders. One just says program files and the other is program files (x86). This is causing me lots of problems in that there are xp and windows 7 versions of the same programs and i keep getting all sorts of error messages. What is the best way to resolve this problem as i am reluctant to "uninstall" various programs using the control panel as only one version shows up in the uninstall process and i do not know which one it is referring to.

Duplicate Program File Folders On Win 7 Pro 64-bit

I clean installed win7 pro 64 bit os from win7 pro 32 bit on my laptop and duplicate program files folders (with and without x86 designation) have been created. The duplicated files are windows programs, internet explorer, windows defender, windows mail, windows media player, windows nt, windows photo viewer, windows portable devices and windows sidebar. Does this mean that these duplicate windows apps are needed for 32 bit and 64 bit software to be able to work with that type of software respectively? Do i really need a 32 bit and 64 bit versions of internet explorer, windows defender, mail, media player, nt, photo viewer, portable devices and sidebar?

It would have been nicer just to have one set of these windows applications that works with both 32 bit and 64 bit software. These windows applications use a lot of hdd real estate. It would also be good to be able to have the option of uninstalling one of the duplicate sets. Is the ability to do just that available now?

How To Move Program, Program(86) Data Folders ?

I'm going to install win 7 64-bit on a 64 gb ssd and i want my program files to be on my hdd or my d:/ drive. I've read a few articles that contradict each other - one that states to use a registry change, a microsoft article that states ms doesn't support such a registry change, and a suggestion that all one need do is to change the drive letter on the installation of the program.

I'd appreciate it if someone would help me understand the best way to change the location of my program files. I am also concerned about leaving my temp, tmp, and perf files on the ssd. Should those be moved? And if so, what might be a good way to do this?

Merging Folders - Preserving Newest File

I keep my work files in a folder on two separate computers (2 folders). As i work on each computer at different times, i have a mix of new and older files. I would like to merge these two folders together. Before i do this, i would like to make sure that windows 7 preserves the most recent document instead of just replacing one file with another, regardless of date since modified.
Is this something that windows 7 automatically does? If it doesn't, is there a tool that will help with this process?

File Folders - Unable To View Content

Unfortunately i have vista/windows 7. I need the return of the xp-type flat folder  so i can see what is in the folders. I work through machine embroidery software called embird and really need to be able to quickly and efficiently choose a design as i could in xp, no trouble at all. Everyone in our machine embroidery group who thought they were upgrading when they bought  vista/windows 7 are so very disappointed and disgusted with the waste of time, money and effort in doing so.

The rest are hanging on to their old xp's like grim death. Why can't microsoft issue a patch to rectify this now obvious retrograde step (as evidenced by all the complaints on the forums. Don't they care that they have created a "dud" and by refusing to acknowledge their error are "doing the wrong thing" by their customers.come on microsoft - lift your act, rectify problems when you obviously know about them. Believe me, this problem is affecting your sales.

This File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. " Error when double clicking folder or c drive. Can open c drive or folder by double clicking. I have had an issue for quite some time with open my c drive or any folders. Every time i click to open either one, i get: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default program control panel"

However, if i right click on the mouse and choose open, i can access the drive/folder with no problem. How do i correct this back to ordinary clicking on the drive/folder?

Error - This File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

Error box: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel". I am using desktop pc: hp windows vista hompe premium 32 bit. (Service pack 2) and my pc is updated with all the latest updates. My problem: when some one email me an internet link and i try to open the link in my internet mail, then this "set associations control panel" box appears on my screen.

I have tried everything to 'set this association' but i am unable to do it, because when i= click on start= open default programs= set your default program. I do not see my internet explorer in the default program box. Also, when i click on "default programs"= and open : " set program access and computer defaults"= my setting is checked on: "custom"= at: 'choose a default browser' the "use my current web browser" is checked. = 'choose a default email program' the "use my current email" is checked.

When i experienced this problem, i had windows explorer 7 on my vista (32 bit) and i downloaded internet explorer 8 and i thought that it would solve the problem. But it didn't. I still cannot open any internet website links that i receive in my email letters. (I do  not have any problems to open my internet explorer when i click on  my internet explorer link or to surf the web) my problem is only when someone send me email with a link to a webpage, on the internet (any webpage) then i cannot open the link from my windows mailbox.

Also when i open software like powerdirector 7 and when i want to create a 'menu' and i want to click on the "download more menu templates from directorzone" that will link me to the website on the internet the same "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Create an association in the set associations control panel" but again, internet explorer 7 (and now i downloaded ie 8) does not appear in my default program box that enables me to set an association. What can i do? Will the program "hijack this" help me in some way, to give you more information about this problem?(I do have firefox on my computer as well).

Separate Settings For Two Monitors

I have a laptop computer with its built-in lcd display. I have added an external monitor, also an lcd unit, through the vga port on the laptop. In windows 7, with the screen resolution -> multiple displays set to "duplicate these displays" ((i.e. , The same thing shows on both the internal and external displays), is it possible to have each monitor set up separately in terms of the display model, resolution, etc. ?

If not, only one monitor can be optimized at a time, either the laptop lcd or the external monitor. I realize that i can adjust these settings for each monitor as long as the multiple displays setting is "extend these displays. " When i have this field set to "duplicate these displays, " the display value is locked on "1/2. Multiple monitors, " with no way to adjust the two displays individually.

Associating Game With Program File

When trying to launch ms flight simulator x standard (with both sp1 & sp2 installed) from the games explorer in vista ultimate (32 bit) i receive an error message to set a program association in set associations from control panel. As a matter of fact all the games in my game explorer display this message.

I know how to set associations, i just don't know which file extensions (or files) to associate with which programs. I associated the extensions ". Flt" and ". Fssave" with program microsoft flight simulator(followed by the little 'r' trademark symbol). I found that in program files->microsoft games->ms flight simulator it is the flight simulator.exe. Yet i still get the error message. Shouldn't it have associated itself when i installed the program from the disc i purchased?

I have also used the disc to do a "repair installation", did not improve the situation.

Choosing A Program To Open A File

I was opening a file and right clicked to open the file, it was a picture file, and used the, "open with. " Command. I selected a program and left the check box below to have that program be the selected program for this kind of file, and all of my files from documents and other non-picture files changed to the particular program icon. All of the taskbar's pinned files/programs like control panel and the file library were all changed to be open by this particular program. It was the windows photo viewer.

I had to restore my computer in order to get it back to using the files in their normal programs. Even my files and programs on the start menu changed. I attempted to change one program back to its original state and left the box checked again, it then changed all my files and programs to this other program. How can i correct this problem so when i have a file i want to use with a certain program i can make that particular program the default but without changing all my other files and programs?

Running Explorer As A Separate Process

Under windows xp we login to our workstations as a basic user and then launch a command prompt with administrator privileges using runas. This allows us to launch things like aduc or exchange system manager as our admin account.

Now i am in the process of creating an image and setting up security for windows 7. When attempting to do the same thing i get the message "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. ". The account that the cmd prompt is running as is an admini account that is in the local as well as domain admin groups. So i dont see that this could be a permissions issue.

Also we have set the registry key hkcusoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrent versionexploreradvancedseperateprocess = 1.

Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.

Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File

In my open with window the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" tick box is greyed out. I have a couple of programs on my w7 (64-bit) pc that will not automatically open when i click on a file associated with them. For example, i have a file which was created in onenote 2003.

When i want to open this file, i double click it and instead of onenote 2003 just loading and opening the file, the open with window comes up asking me to choose a program to run this file. I manually choose onenote 2003 and then try to tick the box opposite "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". But this is greyed out for some reason. And so every time i want to look at that file in onenote 2003 i have to go though this same manual process to select that program to view it.

Every Icon On Desktop Looks Like Word File / Program

I'm working with windows 7, on a new hp laptop. Windows booted up normally, but every icon on the desktop looks like a word file, and every program in the startup menu looks like a word file. Any time that i try to open a program, word opens, as well as a window that says to pick windows (default), os dos, or other encoder to find which one works to be able to read the message in the window, but none of them work. None of the programs are accessible, and word is trying to open every program. What do i do? I'm so confused. I've never seen this before, and i'm pretty familiar with computers.

Can't Open Downloads Folder, File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". As far as i can tell, all my other folders open up fine. Last thing i did was trying to download some software that would gradually turn my volume down so that i could fall asleep to it. It didn't work (older software, seemed like it wasn't compatible with windows 7) so i deleted the application and the installer which were located in my downloads folder.

Program Install Error - A File That Is Required Cannot Be Installed

Program install error: a file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file setup has an invalid digital signature. Cabinet file setup 11. Cab has an invalid digital signature. When trying to install a software program on my windows 7 netbook, an installer information panel stated "a file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file setup 11. Cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt".

Thus the program would not load. Is the problem with the software or with the windows 7 netbook? If the netbook is the problem, can the faulty cabinet file be removed and replaced with a correct file? If so, how?

Choose The Program You Want To Open This File Dialog Issue

As i described, the dialog appears after each restart. It occurs after i have entered my log-in credentials and proceeded to windows. It seems to be fairly late in the boot process as things like chat programs and widgets are fully loaded by the time the dialog appears.

The dialog appears to be the standard "open with" dialog in windows 7.

Specifically the dialog reads:

Choose the program you want to open this file:

File: mathew [this is my user id and there is no extension shown)

If i open the file in something like notepad, then the below information is presented (the #'s are real numbers, but these looked like mac addresses so i left them out).

File Location For Windows Fax And Scan Program

Where is the file location for "windows fax and scan" program. I had to rebuild my computer because i lost my motherboard. I used a new hdd and still have my old drive which is intact. I have all my data except for windows fax and scan files. I just cannot locate them. I see a fax folder which appears to be empty except for the welcome message. Even in the new system i recently received a fax and see it within the program but cannot find where it is stored on the drive. Any suggestion?

Editing Xml File In Program Files Folder

I have a .net program that reads an xml file located in the application startup folder. Under windows xp, i can simply go in and edit this file to change settings, etc. In windows 7, it is driving me crazy. It looks like i am editing it (running notepad as administrator) and writing the file back to the folder. But then i start the program, and the settings remain unchanged. I've even tried deleting the xml file completely to no avail - the program should give me an error if the file cannot be found (it does this correctly under xp), but it somehow seems to find the original file even though i cannot see the file in windows explorer or find it from a dir command in a dos box.

Fix Separate System And Boot Hard Drives

I recently purchased and installed a new hd for my system that was running windows 7. I had purchased the windows 7 digital download installer so i have no install/repair cds to work with. My goal is to replace the old hd with the new one such that the new hd serves as both the system and the boot drive and if i want to i can either remove the old hard drive entirely or wipe it and use it for back up storage.

After installing and formatting the new hd i performed a custom installation of windows 7 using my downloaded installer and selected the new drive as the drive to install windows. After the installation completed i checked the disk management and the old drive (c:) is designated as the system drive and the new drive (z:) is the boot drive. As it currently stands if i unplug the old drive (c:) the attempt to turn the system on it tries to boot from the cd (which i don't have) and windows 7 won't start.

Further it appears that both drives now have windows 7 installed and if i have both plugged in, upon startup it asks what software i would like to run "windows 7" or "windows 7, " after a 20 second countdown it starts up normally. This is more of an annoyance than a show stopper because it adds about 20 seconds every time i start the system.

Any ideas on how to fix the issue? I will try reinstalling windows 7. If that doesn't work my next thought is to burn the digital installer to a cd, unplug the old drive and when it prompts to load from cd to try the burned disk.
