Explorer.exe Uses Too Much Memory

My computer is running windows 7 home premium, 32-bit. I just discovered yesterday that my explorer.exe was literally chomping thousands of thousands of kb of memory just to run. (Going to task manager -> processes). Before, it would take, at most, about15, 000-17, 000 kb to run. Now, the only things i know of that are in explorer.exe are the background slideshow i had running, the gadgets, and the my computer/library windows i had open.

I have 1 gadget, a slideshow of 16 images, and two folder windows open. Before, i had 15-20 windows open and sometimes 40 slideshow images and 10 gadgets running at the same time and the memory still wasn't so high. This morning, it ate up 1, 432, 226 kb (1. 4 gb of memory) just to run. I was kinda scared, so i switched it to only one wallpaper, 1 gadget (the clock one), and no folder windows open. It still ran up to 125, 000kb. Does anybody have similar problem/solution?

I need more memory to make skype calls and use firefox. They keep crashing because i don't have enough memory. Even if i lower the priority of the process it still stays at a crazy level and actually, if i leave it be, it uses more and more memory every minute.

Explorer.exe Is Crashing

My system was infected yesterday by one of those fake antivirus programs. Usually i am able to get rid of it fairly easily. I run spybot search and destroy as well as defender. It seemed to have removed the problem. I restarted the computer and now i am having issues. Explorer will not load on it's own. All i get is a black screen with a mouse pointer in the middle. I used alt-ctrl-delete to start the wtm and explorer through it. But i am unable to open any folders.

After clicking on any folder it takes about 30sec for a message to popup stating: "server execution failed". I can start start most programs through wtm, but i want to run the disk check to see if there are errors. Is there anything i can do? Or should i reinstall? I would hate to do that, but if it's the only option.

Explorer.exe Stops Working

Double clicking on my computer icon usually displays the explorer page. In my case it hangs for ever and if you shut it down it displays the message explorer stopped working, resets the entire desktop and restarts. Same if i use the windows key + e. What is interesting is that i can see the contents of my computer using the link of my documents without a problem. I have tried turning off indexing, repair using command line sfc /scannow (as administrator) no problem found, and fix it for internet explorer. I would appreciate any help / advise.

Explorer.exe Using 50-100% Cpu

I've noticed this for a few weeks. In task manager, explorer.exe shows as using 50-100% cpu, and programs seem to run more slowly. This reliably starts when i open an "explorer window". It will also start if i use msconfig to disable everything (except microsoft services). I have booted into safe mode and run malwarebytes anti-malware - nothing found.

I then ran process explorer, and discovered that the thread which seems to be responsible is called (has a start address) nttdll.dll!Etwtracemessageva+0x130. There may be one or two of these threads present, each using 48%+cpu.

I believe these are responsible, and i think they are used in some kind of event logging, possibly a debugger that somehow got turned on, but i don't know how to proceed from this point.

System:
Intel core2 email removed for privacy
8gb ram
Windows 7 professional 64 bit

Explorer.exe Freezes Constantly

I'm having a major problem with explorer.exe. After ~10 min. Of starting my computer explorer.exe freezes. No option comes up to restart, end, or wait until it responds like normally when a program freezes. I cannot open windows task manager when this happens (no ctrl+alt+delete, when i try to do this it doesn't open up). All programs become unresponsive (taskbar, start menu, web browser, game, etc. ). The only thing i can do is hold the power button on my computer and turn it off. Knowing that turning off your computer this way is very unhealthy for the computer i need to get this problem fixed.

Solutions i have tried (but failed):waiting for the "explorer.exe has stopped responding" box to appear (never appeared even after leaving the computer on overnight). Sfc /scannow (found all files to be ok) scanning for viruses, malware, etc. (I have used malwares bytes anti malware, eset nod 32, and superantispyware. None detected any malware, viruses, etc. )All of the solutions listed here system information:type of computer: laptop manufacturer: hp model: hp pavilion dv6700 os: windows 7 home premium x86 if you need any more info on the problem feel free to ask in the comment section.

And i have to use the task manager to terminate the explorer.exe process and start a new one to get it function again. I wondered if anyone can tell me what the problem is and how to fix it.

Replacing Explorer.exe File For Themes

I downloaded a new theme for windows 7, however, i am nervous about replacing the explorer.exe file as instructed. By default, i would think that's a bad idea. But since i'm still learning my way around windows 7, i'm not sure if this is supported as i can't seem to find anything on microsoft's site saying that it's acceptable or not. Has anyone done this when installing new themes in windows 7?

Can't Open Explorer.exe, Control Panel, Or Help

Brand new windows 7 computer - can't open explorer.exe, control panel, or help. Can't see or save to c: or d: drives. Got the computer last night, and it worked fine. But tonight i can only access ie, media player, etc.

I only have the default user account at this point, so i have admin rights. I haven't really done much yet since i just got the computer last night. I was going to transfer files from my old vista computer tonight, but i can't even open up explorer on my new windows 7. I tried rebooting, but it didn't help. I also ran the sfc; it did not find any integrity violations.

When i click on the folder icon on the task bar, i get a dialog box with a heading of "explorer.exe" and a message stating "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. " If i try to print a web page to xps, it doesn't commit the save on the c: drive (os and program files) or on the d: drive (data).

I have no idea why it is doing this! It is a brand new system. Last night i installed windows updates and changed the desktop background. I haven't installed any programs or transfered data. And it was just fine last night; this problem started when i turned it on tonight.

Services Explorer.exe Don't Work

I have windows 7 32 bit home edition installed, when i start my computer after logging in there is a message that says "c:windowssystem32system profile desktop not accessible, check user-name and password. " In the middle of the screen and my desktop is all black with no icons. In the lower right hand corner a bubble that says something along the lines of "could not connect to user profile service, this may prevent normal users from logging in" pops up as well. Anything i try to run either does not respond or says "the server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect.

Check user name and password.initially i did a clean boot and it brought back my desktop and allowed some programs to run (such as eclipse, skype, calculator and others) but i was still unable to get explorer.exe to run. However this no longer works although this functionality will come back seemingly randomly at times. The only thing i can think of to fix my computer is to re-install win 7 but i don't have a disk, i only have the download on my computer and last time my desktop came back i tried to run it but i got the "this service cannot be started" message. Safe mode works, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with it other than the fact that it is safe mode and doesn't have full functionality.

I can't do a system restore as it seems i accidentally turned it off at some point and there are no restore points. I have tried sfc /scannow with no success. I tried looking for problems with registry keys but i haven't been able to find instructions on how to fix possible problems related to this in win 7 and seemingly similar problems in xp/vista don't seem to have the same structure for registry keys. Does anyone have any ideas as to what i can do? I'm at a loss and can't think of any thing else to try.

Explorer.exe Crash - Win 7 Pro X64

I'm having some problems lately with my windows 7 pro x64. About 2 weeks ago explorer.exe(the shell, not iexplorer.exe) start crashing without a (obvious) reason. A few days later i noticed that this problems usually but not always occurs when i'm using visual studio 2008. After explorer.exe crashes, every time i try to right click on the desktop or an opened folder, it crashes again. However this doesn't happen if i right click a folder(icon not inside the opened folder). Since this problem appeared out of the blue, i first suspected a virus or other malware so i did a full system scan with my norton 360 without finding anything. The second thing i did is to check every software installed short before the problems appeared. Except a few system updates the only apps i installed this month were metro 2033 and a video driver update. I removed the game and rolled back the driver to the previous installation but the problem persisted. Since after the first crash i can't right click anymore i checked every single non microsoft shell extension installed(adobe extensions, winrar, winamp, xnview, folder highlight, nvidia control panel, norton scan, alchool 120% and a few more - i know i have a lot of extensions but i never had a problem with this before neither on windows xp nor windows vista).

I also tried every single solution provided on this forum or any other ms forum or any other windows 7 forum i could find but nothing worked. Since i run out of options i replaced ntdll.dll and explorer.exe with the files from my hp laptop running same windows and 80% of my desktop apps(except games and drivers) but no effect again. The only thing i didn't do is to remove every update installed this month. I also performed a hdd test, ram test, vga test and cpu test and every thing is fine. (I had some technical problems with my pc so i ended up by changing my mother board and video card so i thought it's a hardware problem again). So, so far. Everything i know about this error is the info provided by event viewer and reliability monitor.

Here is the info provided by event viewer and reliability monitor:/*faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6. 1. 7600. 16450, time stamp: 0x4aebab8d

Explorer.exe Freeze Playing Logoff Sound

I want to take my machine in for service and want to be able to make sure the repair person knows what they're doing before i let them mess with it. I have had my dell xps studio 64bit for less than a month. Have installed minimal additional programs besides what it came with and when using explorer it has frozen on several occasions forcing me to shut the whole computer down and then displays this error with the only option to force the program to close. (Waiting for) explorer.exe playing logoff sound.

What exactly is wrong? And how can it be fixed? Thank you so much for your help. As you can see i'm very frustrated and concerned that i just spent a lot of money on something that is not working properly.

Multiple Instances Of Explorer.exe Running In Task Manager

There are multiple instances of explorer.exe running in task manager (currently 7), each one using between 10-40mb of memory. I've never seen this in any previous version, and it doesn't look right to me. Different explorer.exe processes are using cpu resources at different times. I remember reading a while back that this could be a sign of a virus, but i've done a full scan with nis 2010 and nothing showed up. Can anyone give me pointers where to start investigating?

I did a clean install of windows 7 last friday -formatted hdd and all, so there hasn't been much time for anything bad to happen!

Internet Explorer 8 Memory Leak

So, a couple days ago, i installed internet explorer 8. I was sick of ie7 sucking so much memory up, nearly 1. 5 gigabytes of ram. But i was wrong that upgrading would help. Whenever i start up ie8, it takes up about 50, 000 kilobytes of memory, not so bad. 30 minutes and 15 web-pages later, internet explorer is up to 400, 000, which isn't that bad, right? Nope. 45 minutes later, internet explorer is slowing down, and using a whooping 1. 43 million kilobytes, nearly 3/4 of my entire ram. 1 minute later, ie8 stops working all together.

My first suspicions lead me to believe that add-ons* were causing this madness, so i deleted and uninstalled all of them. Didn't work. Deleted all the temporary files. No beef. I searched the web for answers, but i found none. The problem is so annoying i've been using my old sony vaio, instead of my vista.

Error - Logonui Exe No Disk - Outlook Exe No Disk

I have windows 7 professional running 64 bit. A very annoying error pops up every five minutes or so. The message varies and can read "logonui exe no disk" or "outlook exe no disk" or "your favorite app. - No disk" depending on what i am running at the time. I have looked at many forums and can see that this error occurred in previous windows flavors. Some answers point to malware or infected file, others seem to think it's a corrupt install file. I have a fresh install of win 7. My previous os being xp.

I have reinstalled win7 and tried repair functions. No luck so far.

Repartition Memory Stick / Memory Card

How to repartition a memory stick or a memory card? So, i bought an 8 gb memory card and figured i could create a couple or a few partitions on it; perhaps exfat and fat32 ones. I fired up the disk management program only to find out that the flash memory disk has the shrink/extend/delete volume controls greyed out. I did manage to shrink the volume using the disk-part command line program but couldn't use it either for creating new volumes.

Where does this seemingly ridiculous and pointless restriction stem from? I only found a couple of instructions on how to partition a memory stick using some shady third party programs.

Installed Memory Versus Available Memory

I have installed windows 7 64 bit as a clean install on a second disk in a system with windows vista 32-bit running on the 1st disk. The install went fine, and the system is running well. However, when i check the system resources i am told that there is 4 gb of memory installed but only 3. 49 gb available. Is this because i have the windows vista disk in the system. The mbr shows both systems are bootable, and the windows boot file and winload.exe are located on the vista disk drive.

This leads me to believe that i have inherited the 32-bit memory restriction on windows vista. On another system, a new laptop that came with windows 7 64bit pre- installed, also with 4 gb memory, the system resources show that there is 4 gb of memory, without any restriction on what is available.

.exe Files Will Not Open Normally

.exe files will not open normally, they just give a message saying "choose the program you want to use to open this file" i've seen this problem elsewhere but with a few different recommendations. My windows 7 recently started malfunctioning recently after apparently contracting several viruses - i think i've gotten rid of most of the problems by downloading the free version of avg, which was recommended to me by a friend. However, two problems remain:

1. Internet explorer keeps opening erratically and immediately accessing strange websites (i'm sure this is some sort of malware still on my computer). My internet explorer folder won't delete, either (it says i need "permission from trustedinstaller to make changes to this folder").

2. I can't open .exe files normally. Every time i try to (either by double clicking an icon or from the start menu) i get an "open with" window, prompting me to pick an application to open the .exe file with. I can still open applications if i right-click on them and select "run as administrator", but something is still obviously wrong and i'm hoping someone knows what might be happening so they can help.

Oh, and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (where the "safely eject hardware" button usually is") is gone.

Cannot Run .exe Files

Since yesterday i have been unable to open any .exe programs on my windows 7 computer. I have read numerous questions and possible solutions for this, but none has worked.

I get an error window saying:

These files can't be opened
Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened

I have read about editing the registry but it hasn't worked. I cannot restore windows 7, as i have found out i have no restore points (oops).

I have run a full scan of my system with ms security essentials, and found nothing.

Can anyone help? If you need more details, let me know.

Additional info:
-
- I cannot for example open notepad.exe. But i can open a txt file and it will open in notepad.

- Same goes for firefox, ie and opera. Can't open the browsers directly, but if i run an html file and choose "open with" it will open in the desired browser.

- My ms security essentials doesn't run on startup (non of my startup programs do), but i can right-click a file and choose to scan it with msse and it will open and scan.

Wininit.exe Using 50% Cpu

My windows 7 dell laptop has recently become really slow. Cpu load is way up high, the fan is on full speed and the hard disk is very busy. Task manager shows that wininit.exe is permanently using 50% of the cpu with other processes mostly using no more than a few percent. In safe mode, wininit behaves itself and cpu load remains low. In fact i'm writing this post in safe mode because the computer is too slow to use in normal mode. I've run virus scans with avg and panda and both came back clean. I can't remember what i did, if anything, to make this start but i'd be grateful for any ideas on how to make it stop.

Network .exe Issues

I am currently running a ms server 2003 network. I have mainly all xp boxes and few vista boxes running on the network. I just recently got my first win7 laptop and are having issues install programs (office 2007, norton) from their network locations. The security will not allow me. It asks for a username and password but the network admin credentials do not work nor does the users.

The weird part is that i can copy the complete folder over and install directly from the harddrive but that seems old school. Am i missing something here that will allow me to run .exe files directly from the network.

Sttray64.exe Application Error

Sttray64.exe application error, mmc.exe application error, and a zte usb modem that has started giving me access violation errors/msdart.dll and eolesys errors in module dll_netcard_r.dll

Windows 7 home with norton 360 2010

Part 1: the problem started with my zte usb modem giving me the different access violations, it says that msdart.dll was not designed to work with the operating system, along with the eolesys errors and access violations. It previously worked fine, and now i'm not sure why it won't work.

Part 2: i also after the previous errors started, that right after booting up that it gave me a sttray64.exe application error. I would close it, and eventually had norton not let it bootup with the system which solved that problem. Then i noticed that i also was denied access to the device manager through a mmc.exe application error. Also certain command prompts like event-viewer give me the application error etc.

What kind of problem could this be? It seems to be acting like a virus, but my system speed and functionality has remained great. It's not slow and doesn't reboot or give me problems outside when i look for the things mentioned above. Norton has always been up and running and its never given lets worms through before.

I've tried system restore back a few months and from the backup i had on an external but it doesn't change anything. Would a return to factory settings help?
