Win 7 Install Hangs At Blank Compatibility Report

Windows 7 install hangs at blank 'compatibility report' i have run compatibility advisor and only need new printer driver. I waited about 30 minutes and nothing happens. Install starts, installs temp files, setup is started, i go online to get updates, accept license, choose upgrade install, checks compatibility.compatibility report is blank and the copy on the desktop goes to blank page online.

The taskbar showing 'collecting information' goes almost halfway and then just stops. Nothing happens. I am installing 32 bit windows 7 home premium as upgrade to vista home premium.compatibility check is blank after running and if i hit 'close' it just goes back to the 'install windows' page. How can i get windows 7 to install?

Bypassing Compatibility Check During Install

I have a htc shift umpc and i am trying to install a version of windows 7 ultimate that i just bought, the problem is that the htc shift that i am using has a faulty power board and thinks it is on battery power even when plugged into an ac outlet and the windows installer will not continue when using battery power. Is there any way to skip this section of the installer and just install windows 7?The device has been discontinued and getting the board repaired will cost almost as much as the copy of windows i purchased for it so i would rather not go there.

Cannot Find 3rd File To Install Xp Compatibility Mode

With windows 7 in a brand-new pc, i went to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx after confirming that my pc will handle the software. One must enter their os (windows 7 64-bit ultimate) and language (english), after which 3 blue boxes appear. The user is told to download file#1, install it, then file#2 and then file#3. Everything works fine with #1 and #2, but the blue box for #3 on that page is not a hyperlink (as are #1 and #2). It says, "**enables windows xp mode for pcs" - and i suppose that it would, if it was a live url. It appears that someone has updated the webpage and inadvertently messed up the hyperlink. Either that, or i'm a dummy. Maybe both.
Any help appreciated.

Easy Transfer Report

I recently bought a new pc with windows 7 already installed. I performed a windows easy transfer of most of my stuff from my old xp to the windows 7 pc with no fuss, except when it was installing/saving the transferred data, it asked me for my old pc's password. I didn't know it, didn't even know it had one and neither did my husband. We tried all the obvious ones, then just gave up and closed that window down. And the rest of the installation/saving continued. Now when i go to view the report of what was transferred, i am unable to open it as it keeps saying that an error has occurred, and do i want to continue running scripts.

Then a pop up box appears with the following message. "Windows easy transfer post migration application has stopped working". It then searches for a solution, then says "it has a problem that caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify if a solution becomes available". Then the report closes down and i cant view it at all. What can i do?

Where To Report / Confirm Bug?

i think i've found a bug in windows 7. Where to report or confirm this? This forum?

P. S. To make it more clear, here is the situation:

Title: problem entering backslash character in standard open file dialog

Steps to reproduce
Use any program which uses standard open dialog (i will demonstrate on notepad), make czech keyboard available in the system.
Start notepad
Switch to czech keyboard
Choose file -> open
Try to enter backslash in the filename edit box using right alt /altgr/ + q key combination

Expected
Backslash character ('') appears

Observed
Nothing happens

Known workarounds
Use us keyboard (or other where backslash char. Can be typed directly)
Or
Switch to us keyboard and back to czech - right alt + q will start to work for this instance of dialog

System Diagnostics Report

I just built my new computer and installed windows 7 and have had the same problem with unexpected shutdowns. I generated a system health report and got these 2 failures:

Motherboard device status fail count
24
1
Motherboard devices.

Plugandplay device configured fail count
181
1
Plugandplay devices.

And clue what could be wrong with the motherboard? I got an asus p6x58d premium motherboards and as far as i can tell everything is installed correctly and there is no damage to the board.

Upgrade Advisor Report On Devices

If the report says that "we don't have compatibility information about this device. " Does that mean it cannot support the device? How would i know if it can be supported? I tried using the microsoft online search for compatible devices but did not see the device i am using.

If the report says that "check windows update after installing windows 7 to make sure you have the latest driver for this device, otherwise it may not work. " Does that mean it may not support the device?

Bug Report Dvd Maker

I have windows 7 home premium x64 with windows dvd maker file version: 6. 1. 7600. 16385 dated 07/13/2009 9:39 pm. When adding titles to be burned, dvd maker shows a time of 150 minutes on the dvd. It can not add mpg files correctly. A mpeg with 1:31 and another mpeg with 45 minutes and another mpeg 14 minutes shows 149 out of 150 minutes. This is incorrect since the blank dvd can only hold 120 minutes. Encoding starts and then there is an error. Nothing is written. I can create the dvd with 1:31 + 14 minutes dvd for 105 minutes.

Cannot Use Crystal Ocx To Print Report

Software that we have and support that has run for more than 10 years no longer works on windows 7. Well, most of it works, except one small part that transfers control to an ocx to print a crystal report. I'm trying to figure out why it wouldn't work. It just hangs with the swirling blue wheel. Does anyone know what changed with ocxs in windows 7 that might make this not work? I've tried using the compatibility mode options and administrator access to no avail. Any thoughts? I'm looking for a backward compatibility type workaround.

Monitor Will Just Go Blank

I have an issue where my monitor will just go blank. The computer is running but no display. My first thought was that this is a display adapter/video driver issue but i not longer think so. Let me explain. My set up is a hp m9040n running windows 7 ultimate x64. I have a nvidia 9600 gso card that is less than 6 months old and use a samsung syncmaster t240 monitor.

This first started happening about one month ago right after i upgraded my video card driver to the latest version. I would be away from the computer for awhile and when i came back no amount of mouse shaking would bring the screen on. At that point a hard shut down and boot up would bring things back.

Thursday it got worse. Hard shut downs would not bring anything back but i would see the bios startup screen so obviously the monitor and display adapter has some output. I started in safe-mode and installed that latest driver from the nvidia website. No difference, in fact it appears to be the same driver that windows update put out.

My next step was to roll back my driver to the one that came with my video card. This kind of works. There are new symptoms now. Now what happens is that after working for awhile i would hear the usual kind of insert/disconnect sound (like plugging in a usb device) and then the screen resolution would change from 1920x1200 to 1024x768. For some reason the monitor according to the screen resolution control would go from my monitor to a generic. If i click on the detect button, the screen will blank out and once again i have to do a hard shut down. The hard shut down followed by a boot in safe mode and and reboot restores things to normal.

Win 7 Hangs

I have been using windows 7 rc1 for a while now and it's been very stable until last week. I had not made any changes to software or hardware. I was watching a dvd as i normally would and the computer just froze. There was no response from the keyboard or the mouse and no error message. I rebooted and went to the event log and found no error message generated. So i tried again to finish my dvd and after a few minutes it locked again. I then rebooted and tried the built in dvd player in windows media center. It had a terrible lag so that was no option.

After that i tried another dvd software that i had installed but never used and again the computer freezes. Something else i've noticed but just been dealing with is that any audio or video that i watch or listen to will jitter every so often with some static sound. It happens in any program i use to listen to audio or watch video. Don't know if that's related but has anyone else had any similar problems with system hangs and no related error message to trace the problem?  Btw, i had to dig out my previous drive with vista installed and put that back in the computer to continue my normal pc use.

Win 7 Hangs Up

I upgraded from xp to win7, got everything running smoothly and then a week later upgraded the motherboard, processor and memory. Then the problems started. I have updated every driver known to man and all looks well in the device manager. However after a smooth boot the os hangs up sometimes 10 minutes later sometimes 1 minute after boot with no activity at all. At times i can go to the internet for a few minutes and browse at times it hangs immediately.

I am running with a selective startup with only necessary services running. Makes no difference. I can view the event log and get a " the computer browser service depends on the server service which failed to start because of the following error: the dependency service or group failed to start. " But i am not sure if that is the cause or the result. Safe mode works ok.

Screen Goes Blank

After i have updated my computer from xp to win7 i have been experiencing a strange thing. My screen goes blank after 60 seconds of inactivity.initially when it happened i saw that my graphic card driver (nvidia geoforce 8400gs) was not updated - which was also causing some blue screen errors. After i updated the drivers the blue screen error went away but the blank screen error sort of comes and goes. It stays for some time (a week or something) and then goes away for a month etc. Two reasons i could think of.

1. Power options - everything set to "never"
2. Graphics drivers - up to date

Any idea why i would be seeing this ?

Blank Hard Drive

I just had a new hard drive installed on this pc. I asked the tech to install windows 7 instead of vista. Windows 7 is over overwhelmingly great in every aspect! The graphics, sounds, music and pictures are everything one could even hope to have. My main concern is when microsoft takes windows 7 rc from my hard drive - what am i going to end up with?Nothing? A blank screen? Anyone and everyone who might know what i should do, please answer this as it does have me worried. Should i put another version of windows on the pc now or just wait for the sale of windows 7?

File Deletion Hangs

I've been having problems with my norton ghost backups, which hang at the very end of the backups, preventing their completion. But now, i think it's not a ghost problem: frequently when i delete a set of files using windows explorer, it's hanging at the end as well. This makes me think it's a deeper problem within the windows file system software. To be explicit, within windows explorer i select a set of files and then right mouse click and delete.

A dialog comes up to track the deletions, file by file. The deletion takes place (they are removed from the display of files), yet the dialog remains - and it will remain indefinitely. I'm suspecting that this failure to cleanly complete simple file operations is related to my hangs in ghost backups.

Win 7 Hangs After Update

I have the same problem - safe mode, no problem, clean boot won't give you any help - i have already been down this road - this seems to be an issue with the last updates from ms - you will probably also experience loss of usb ports once the device that occupies the port is disconnected.
I have experienced the same problem on two (2) identical machines (hp pavilion dv7, i7, w7 home premium, 6gb ram, 640gb hd, nvidia geforce) - the problem was so annoying, especially the usb problem, that i reinstalled the os and all the programs only to encounter the problem again.

I returned the machine and exchanged it for the same machine - and now the same problems again.
This is a ms problem - clean boot won't tell you anything - just have to wait for ms to realize the problem and issue a patch.

Update Dialog Hangs Up

Yesterday in the middle of the working day my computer restarted and i lost one program i was working on (i already re-coded again). I'm thinking it might be automatic windows update. So, after that i was trying to bring this dialog and adjust my settings to install updates manually.

However, every time i try to bring this dialog and do something, it hangs and i have to kill it using task manager. Do you know what should i do? Could it be some virus instead? I'm using ms essentials as my antivirus program. Recently i ran a manual scan and it found 3 trojan (removed). I'm not sure how did they get there in the first place. Anyway, do you know what should i do in this situation?

Print Spooler Hangs

I have 2 laptops, upgraded old one to win 7, new one came with it installed. Using several different printers, from time to time the spooler will freeze up. My only solution so far has been to open services, and stop the spooler, i then have to reboot to clear the problem. Then things work fine for a while then it hangs up again. Either laptop, any printer, direct or networked. Doesn't matter which combo i use so i can only conclude the problem lies with win 7.

Update At Shutdown Hangs Up

Os: win 7 home premium 64 bit oem installed on zt 1. 5t desktop
Service pack level:  do not know. Machine is 2 weeks old and have seen 3-5 successful updates at shutdown time.

Few weeks ago bought a quad-core zt machine that came with win 7 home premium 64 bit os and a 1. 5t hd. Have been very happy with the unit, and have seen some 3 or 4 updates at shutdown with the usual banner "please do not power off or unplug your computer; installing update 1 of x. "  So, would happily head to bed and could hear the unit shut down in five minutes or so.

Not so last evening (fri, feb 26). Saw the update screen at 11 pm, and still there as of 10 am this morning. Yes, can see some sporadic hard disk activity, and the spinning cursor.

Any idea what may be happening, and more importantly how can i break out of the update, bring to a place where i can continue my work?

Btw, have two other win 7 systems that did not have the update last evening: a netbook running home premium 32bit, and a dell desktop running win 7 ultimate. All three are on a home win 7 network.

Update Hangs When Enabled

My computer started out as a vista machine. When i got my free upgrade to windows 7 64bit i started to have a hange problem with in minutes of boot up. I traced the problem to only happen when the computer has internet access. I further traced the problem to windows update as when this is disabled the computer no longer hangs. With update disabled i am not able to check for or download any updates from the microsoft site. How can i figure out what is wrong or what do i need to do next to fix this?

Agp440 Hangs During Boot

I recently rebuilt my pc and installed windows 7. Things seemed to be working ok with my old nvidia graphics card but it was only 128mb and i wanted to upgrade. I replaced it with an ati radeon 1gb agp card and now it hangs when booting agp440.sys. It'll sit there for about 25 minutes and then complete booting. Is there anyway of disabling this file from booting? Seems it was a big issue for xp and people could disable it in services, but its not listed in windows 7. Pentium 4 prescott 3. 2 ghz; 3gb ddr pc3200; asus p4c800-e deluxe, hsi radeon hd4650 1gb ddr3

Blank Screen After Upgrade

During the upgrade from vista ultimate to windows 7 ultimate the screen went blank so i am not even sure that win 7 installation was successful. As i could see nothing on the screen i waited 5 hours until my pc went absolutely quiet with no sign of installation activity. I then did a hard reboot. The pc powers up and powers down 3 times before staying on, but the screen remains blank as the monitor is in power saving mode. I have tried everything to get the monitor out of power saving mode but cannot change it.

This means that i cannot boot into any mode (safe mode included) as i have no monitor picture. I carried out the ~win advisor tests and removed all programs it suggested. The only thing i could not remove was the "ati catalyst control centre and install manager" each time i tried to remove them i got the message that setup.exe was not responding, so i could not remove them. How can i get my monitorto come on without being in power saving mode, and if not, is there any other way i can boot into safe mode which will switch the monitor on?

Win 7 Hangs Randomly

Finally got a clean custom install of win 7 ultimate to a formatted partition h: on drive 0. Dual boot with working windows vista on the c: drive. Windows 7 boots and occasionally works for a period of time, accesses the internet fine, allows me to install a program, sometimes read email, but randomly freezes with a strange screen display, vertical lines over the existing display.

Eventually the screen becomes completely blurred with odd patterns and remains that way until i reboot. There is no single program that fails consistently. Word processor, and ie fail at different times. Noticed several times it occurred when entering data like password etc. , But at times it fails with a mouse cursor movement. When i boot to windows vista, thankfully it works flawlessly without failures so i can actually accomplish my work. Hoping for some help with this the win7 freeze problem.

I recently upgrade my computer from windows vista to windows 7. Everything seems to start up fine, but then the desktop icons are just blank sheets, the task bar isn't functioning, and when i go to the start menu, i can not click on any of the programs (there is a small magnifying glass that appears next to the program when i click on it). Also whenever i double click on icons on my desktop, the computer becomes non responsive and the computer also stalls.
