Folder Empty Backup And Restore

After recovering from a boot failure, after downloading a windows malware update, i made a new backup of all my documents using windows backup and restore wizard. Using the start button and then documents i browsed to the external drive holding the backup, found the backup folder, saw the list of document folders that matched the list on my main hard-drive but every folder i tried to open said "folder empty". The backup took 5 hours to complete and i received a screen saying backup successful, but where are the documents that were backed up?

Empty Backup Folder On External Hard Drive

This is regarding windows 7 home premium. I recently discovered the files created on my external hard drive by windows automated backup utility are empty. The backup utility continues to apparently create backups: the external drive lights up to indicate activity when the "backup in progress" symbol appears in the notification area of the taskbar.control panel>system and security>backup and restore shows a backup size of 92. 24 gb and verifies the backup location as the external drive.

The external drive itself appears to be working fine: i can move other files, such as outlook backups, to the drive and verify their file size. There are two backup-related file folders on the external drive, one with the name of the computer and the other named windowsimagebackup, which was created about two minutes after the first. But both are empty.

Backup And Restore - Windows Can't Find Restore Image

I created an image backup with windows 7. It created a large vhd file and appeared to complete correctly. I copied the image to my thumb drive and tried to do a restore. I can find the thumb drive and browse it and all the files are there but if i try to do a restore it doesn't find the restore image. I also tried putting it on a network drive - it can't find it there even though i point it to the share it is in. I've tried using a restore cd, as well as installing windows and using the recovery in control panel.

The folder structure is as follows
Windowsimagebackup\computername
Under that folder are three folders
Backup 2012-07-15 232717
Catalog
Sppmetadatacache
Metadataid

It seems odd there is no obvious way to just say this is the vhd - right here in this folder - use it and restore.

Backup And Restore

I just upgraded to windows 7 from vista. I had backed up my program files and data on dvd's prior to upgrading to windows 7. Now i want to restore them in windows 7, but i am unclear of the location of where i should be restoring them. If i pick the original location, it tells me that the file already exists in that location, and do i want to replace, copy or keep both copies; if i choose a different location, i have no idea where they should go. Do i make a new folder, or just have them restored in c drive. I am not sure how to proceed. Can anyone explain this for me please?

Win 7 Backup And Restore

I do a weekly backup of my system and i may need to do a restore soon due to hardware changes. Now i need to know what is actually backed up. Will my application settings be backed up. I am looking at stuff like outlook profiles address books and email accounts. If they are once i do a fresh install of win7 should i do my restore before or after i install my applications such as office. Also i see a shadow is created what is this?

Why i need to know is if my hardware changes and drivers change and the shadow is the same as an image will it be better not to restore the shadow portion. Just thinking if it is like an image it would then restore all my old drivers for the hardware and i would be back to where i was before the hardware change. I will be changing out mb and cpu so i am sure being different to what i have now i will have some type of issues. "Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul. "

How To Restore A Previous Backup / Image?

Ok so i use some programs that were not compatible with windows 7 that came on my new computer. After upgrading to professional and trying xp mode (too slow) i decided to just downgrade to xp and deal with it. However. I didn't realize that all the drivers for my computer are not compatible with windows xp so nothing works. I need to go back to windows 7. I created a "backup disc" which i assumed would be sufficient if i did need to go back. However, when trying to "restore" it says that windows doesn't recognize the backup files or something like that. I assume because it wasn't out yet. So. With that, no factory discs how can i get 7 back on my computer with out buying something that i already had?

Restore Backup Operation Has Been Stopped

I decided to restore the factory of my asus u30jc laptop but after restoring the last dvd and restarting, the operation has been stopped! It stops on the state in which the word asus is on monitor but doesn't continue! Pressing any key or putting dvd in dvd player, doesn't make any changes on this state! When i put power button it shots down quickly and putting it again make this page displayed. What should i do now? I would add that, before restoring backup, the speaker made some strange noise and when i put my hand on it or around webcam place on top of monitor, it made a voice like screeching.

Backup Restore Error Code - 0x80070424

Windows 7, backup & restore, error code 0x80070424. Can not backup or anything else in windows 7 after doing a disk check or de-fragmenting my hard drive. If i don't do the disk check or de-fragment my hard drive it work fine, but as soon as i do  these tasks, the program give me an error code of 0x80070424 every time, and i have tried every fix that they had on the answer site. The only thing up to now that work was until i of course do a disk check or de-fragmenting was to use advance restore.

Either using the system imagne or a full restore using the windows 7 disk, but it doesn't last, and it give a error code no matter what if it backup, creating system imagine, changing setting or manage space. It give and error code of 0x80070424 sometimes it will also give 696, 693, 0x80070057, 0x8007002, 0x80070017. And my restore never works it says could not make changes to files no change were made to your computer, but beside that it works great. Just can't do any  disk check or defragment the hard drive. How long do you think that will last ?

Backup And Restore Vs External Hard Drive

I have upgraded from vista ultimate to 7. I also needed to change out my 150gb hdd for a 500gb hdd. I thought the cool thing to do would be to install 7 and all my softwareon the old drive, make a backup/image of that drive onto a spare external drive, install the new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

My plan worked to perfection with one fatal flaw. The image only created 150gb of usable space on my 500gb hdd. So i reinstalled the original 150gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd into an external drive box with usb connection. The computer immediately recognized the 500gb hdd but when i look for it on computer, it won't show up.

Neither will my other external hdd's. I have tried on different usb ports and usb cables and the device manager says that all usb devices are operational. Dell precision m4300, 4gb memory, 2. 50 gh, t9300 core 2 duo 32 bit system. Extra credit: can anyone tell me why the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon won't work? Double clicking and right mouse click have no affect.

Backup / Restore Fails When Changing Password

I'm on an active directory domain using windows 7 enterprise, fully patched. I've configured windows backup and restore to use a network location to write backups to. The permissions on the network location are controlled by my active directory account, which has full control access. I changed my active directory credentials recently and now, windows backup won't backup to the network location anymore, stating that my credentials have expired.

Error code is 0x8007052e. Alas, i cannot find the option to change the used credentials for the network location added to the backup destinations. How can i change the credentials and why isn't windows backup fully ad integrated?

Restore Font Folder To Original Condition

In the process of trying to install font manager software for windows 7, i somewhat corrupted my font folder. Basically what happened, is that during installation, the software started moving all the fonts around into it's own directories. This would have been fine, except the installation failed, and upon further research i realized the software is not compatible with windows 7.

In an effort to restore the font folder to it's original condition, i tried to replace the font folder from another windows 7 ultimate installation. Unfortunately, what happened is that the copy process didn't delete any of the existing files in my font folder, but rather added all the copies and renamed them to _0 etc. So now my font folder has over 1000 entries, many of which are copies. And, for some reason windows 7 has hidden all but about 15 of them. I know they are there because they are visible in the folder properties, but i can't see them when i open the folder.

Ideally i would like to restore the font folder to it's original condition. Do you have any advice? All i can think to do is use a boot utility and restore the files from a dos command prompt before windows loads. But i'm not sure what will happen if i do this.

Backup And Restore Error - The Parameter Is Incorrect - 0x80070057

Configuring backup and restore (executing 'sdclt.exe /configure' as super user) causes error 'the parameter is incorrect' 0x80070057.

Background:  backup and restore was working fine here in windows 7 home premium until i encountered hard disk cabling problems and the backup would just die, or would freeze the machine. Event 129, 'reset to device, deviceraidport1, was issued' was realized in the event viewer. In any event, at some point i removed power from the machine without shutting down windows and that messed something up, i believe in the registry somewhere.

The cabling problems are resolved but now backup and restore "lost" it's configuration and trying to reconfigure (set it up again) causes the 80070057 parameter error when clicking on "save settings and start backup" (after changing source and destination files/drives and resetting my modified us regional settings).

The following were tried to no avail:1. Chkdsk /r on all partitions2. Sfc /scannow3. Clearing the appropriate registry entries in hklm (as documented elsewhere in this forum)4. Running in a clean boot state5. Running in safe mode6. Reading every appropriate forum post in here (some with questions not answered)the only thing i've found to fix it:clean installation of windowsi don't wanna do that if i can help it. Any help?

Backup And Restore Error - The Parameter Is Incorrect (0x80070057)

I have some problems with my backup program (backup and restore of w7). Normally i have scheduled a backup every fryday at 19:00 hours. The backup goes to a nas. Today the nas was offline and i was forgotten to turn it on. I turned it on and it came available as normal. Then i went to the "backup and restore" option of my control panel. There i saw the information that there was no backup done that night (correct) so i pressed the "backup now" button.

Directly the next message appeared: back up or restore your files

(Red cross) an internal error has occurred.
The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057).

There is nothing else i can do anymore with the program. Even restarting my system fails: the same error code is appearing again. Does anyone knows what is the matter here and how to solve this?

How To Restore Programs Which Aren't In Windows Old Folder ?

After installing windows 7 how do i restore those programs which aren't even in that "windows. Old" folder? Before installing windows 7 on my (hitherto vista) vaio i effected a full backup on an external hard drive. I then installed windows 7 and noticed all my program files were missing. When i went into the windows. Old folder i was able to see a good deal of them, seemingly most of those that i had installed myself, such as itunes, 7zip, etc.

The programs that were already installed on the vaio when i bought it from the vaio store, however, were absent. For example the whole sony recovery tool program, adode photoshop and others. When i connected the hard drive to the laptop i was able to see the backup i had done just before w7 installation but when i tried to expand the folder down (hoping to see 'program files') i only saw a series of strange looking (albeit large) files that didn't mean very much.

Presumably this is the way in which my backup was encrypted or stored, but is there a way in which i can access the individual programs from the hard drive so that i can put them back on my laptop?
I was able to find all my music, videos and documents in the windows. Old folder, and have restored them, but the missing programs worry me.

Also the amount of free space on the laptop is identical now to when i still had vista on there, making me think that perhaps the 'missing' programs haven't been deleted at all but may just be hiding somewhere in the 'windows. Old' folder. But i could well be wrong about that.

Backup And Restore - Win 7 Will Not Load Recovery From Disc

So yesterday i was on the computer and it just quit. Shut down and restarted without warning and flashed a blue screen with a sunshine ray type screen. Then i got a windows error recovery and i choose to start windows normally as this has never happened to me. When i choose that i got a blue screen that a problem was detected quoted stop: 0x0000007e. I managed to get into the advanced boot options but no option would work. It would only just recycle a restart. Then i would get the error in windows boot manager about 0xc0000428. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. I have put in a recovery disc that was made and a genuine windows 7 disc and i get the option to boot from disc but it just takes me to the digital signature error.

I have pulled the hard drive out and put into an external case and hooked up to my laptop. Everything is still on my hard drive. I have ran the smart tests in the bios menu and they all passed. I have taken out the ram and put it back in. I do not get any beep codes or anything. I read on here to try the windows defender offline disc. I burned a disc off my laptop which is just a few weeks old and clean of malware and viruses. When i put disc in all i got was a the blue symbol (4 squares in a square) and it just sits and goes no where. Thinking there might be something wrong with the dvd drive itself i tried an external usb dvd with same results. I even made a copy on a flash drive with the same results except shortly after loading i now get an all blue screen that says recovery your pc needs to be repaired. An unexpected error has occured. Error code 0xc0000229 and so on with the f8 for startup settings or enter to try again. Well nothing happens when i choose f8 or press enter. I have to restart the system with a hard reboot to get anything to happen again.

I have also went into the bios and reloaded defaults. Not sure what else to do. I am not 100% tech savvy but i would say i have about 75% knowledge on the systems. Any help and guidance would be much appreciated. I have searched out the problem but cannot find anything else that repeats my problem. A lot of people are able to load from a disc but i cannot. Hp pavillion p6000 series, windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Restore Windows Using Backup After Completely Reformat Hard Drive

If i back up the system, then completely wipe and reformat the hard drive, will i be able to somehow restore windows using the backup, with all the software intact (aka subscriptions etc. ). Also how do i restore if the memory is 100% wiped clean? Basically i have an acer laptop with a stupid unaccessible hard-drive partition with the vista acer backup on it.

I am currently running the w7 rc and am about to upgrade to w7, there is also a vista dual-boot i will erase at the same time. I have mcafee and powerdvd subscriptions on the rc. Now when i upgrade the rc to w7 directly these subscriptions will carry over, and that's wonderful, however i still have the stupid partition problem wasting hdd space. As i understand the only way to get rid of it is a full hdd reformat, which wipes the memory. My plan is to backup the new w7 account to an external hdd, thats a ful backup of everything, perform the reformat, and somehow get the backup back onto the hdd. Only there's no windows software to run the recovery.

So, my question's are:
How do i get the backup onto the computer after the wipe, considering there is no software to read it (would i need to get microsoft to re-activate the product key)?
If i can somehow get all this done will the subscriptions still work?
Quite simply - is there an easier way of sorting all this out?

Devices & Printers Empty

I have a working hp 1100 printer connected through a parallel port pci card on my new dell xps 8100. The card is showing as correctly installed in device manager. The printer doesn't show in devices & printers. There are several duplicate printers showing, for example, in office word  'print' caused by unplugging/plugging the printer. As the printer doesn't show in devices & printers, i can't set it as default, set sharing or delete the duplicates.

When i ran printer trouble shooter, it listed all the hp 1100 installs and did set the default and sharing for me on request. So, windows knows about the printer installs and can correct settings via the trouble shooter but devices & printers refuses to show them hence i cannot delete the duplicates. Are there any other ways to get at the printer installs until this problem is fixed by ms?

I have a pre order of windows 7 professional upgrade coming when released. Problem When Deleting Empty File

I have used universal extractor (ue) to extract an installer file (.exe) to my desktop folder. One of the files that the ue has created is an empty file with a blank name (also it doesn't have an extension) - this empty file is included in the installer file packet. When i view it in windows explorer, its full name is blank (i have unchecked the option 'hide extensions for known file types').

I try to delete it but i get a message 'an unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem. Error 0x80070091: the directory is not empty. '.

I also try another method. Cut and paste that empty file to the recycle bin. And i get another message 'you need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder', i click continue button then another message appears 'you require permission from to make changes to this folder'. I have logged in with my administrator account - it is the only user account in my computer. These messages still appear after i try to run the windows explorer as an administrator and delete that file.

I restart my computer, enter safe mode, delete that file with two methods i mentioned above and still got those message. So i use system restore and windows backup to bring my computer to the time before that file was created but all of them don't have any effects.

That empty file make me confuse. I think maybe there are some problems with the file allocation table (fat), so this makes windows can create and display that empty file but cannot access to it (i also can't rename or add attribute to it) (?!). I have used chkdsk to check my disk but windows say it works well. So i still don't know how to delete that file.

Can you help me the solution for this problem?

Unable To Empty Recycle Bin

I have been having problems with deleting files that were auto recovery or compatible files from previous software versions that i have tried to delete from my computer (one is an autocad file and the other is an excel file). I can delete them from my documents folder and they end up in the recycle bin, however, when i try to empty my recycle bin it will attempt to delete them, but never accomplishes the task. I have allowed it to run for hours, with the message "deleting 1 item (4. 62 mb) from recycle bin. Discovered 0 items (0 bytes per second)".

I have also tried restoring them unsuccessfully. I have also tried deleting the files from the recycle bin instead of emptying it without any better results. Is there another way to empty the recycle bin or repair the issue that is causing the problem?

Randomly Empty Windows Search Box Will Pop Up

Randomly a empty windows search box will pop up. The box says " > search results" in the address bar and "to begin type in the search box" in the main screen of the box. The box pops up randomly and sometime as soon as it is x out. There's is no bar with options or tools to deactivate.

I have replaced the key board thinking it may have been commanding window to search. I have updated all software. This happens completely random. This typically happens in spurts lasting around 10mins. It happens often, around four times a day. Im off and on my desktop all day long. The box is empty and has the search in the right corner and an address bar to the left of that taking up 3/4 of the top permitted of the box.

I have never had a problem like this with windows that i cannot figure out how to eliminate. This has been happen since i loaded windows about three weeks now. If someone can point me in a direction it would be helpful.

After Upgrade Usb Hard Drive Folders Are Empty

After upgrade from vista 64 to windows 7 64, usb hard drive initially works, then at some point all the "folders are empty" and i cannot access files untill i reboot. Then same thing all over again. My setup was working perfectly fine with vista 64; i had a 1tb  seagate freeagent external hard drive where i had all my pictures, music and movies. These media was monitored by my zune software, windows media player and windows media center, and also shared on my network.

Then i upgraded to windows 7 64. At first it seemed fine, windows 7 recognized and external drive, all applications were still monitoring my media from it, and i was able to access the files. But after a couple of minutes of accessing the files, the drive just seems to suddenly go offline.

I can still browse the folder structure, but the i don't see any files, and folders are empty. In some folders i see the files (maybe the info was cached) and if i try to access it, i get an error to "check the location of the file" or "file not available". Once i reboot my system, then everything seems back to normal but as soon as i try to access anything, it breaks as before. It fails even more promptly if i try to download something on to the drive.

All the usb drivers seem ok. The external hard drive works normally on my laptop that has a windows 7 32bit, so no problems in the drive itself. I tried removing all other usb devices (i have 7 usb inputs on and two more on my monitor), i tried changing power options so that usb ports are not automatically shut off by the pc, i tried reinstalling all the hardware drives including the nvidia chipset driver, i even reinstalled windows 7. The issue is still not resolved.
