Does Win 7 Image Backup Work Fine For A Ssd?

We are getting new hp envy pcs with solid state drive (ssd) as the primary c: drive, and with regular hdd for the second drive we'll use for daily backups (no network backups for images). I want to know if we will have any problems in case of a crash, using our backup image on the hdd to produce a new ssd working c: drive. For example, acronis does have some such problems; see http://kb. Acronis.com/content/2699 and http://forum. Acronis.com/forum/7687 . Will windows 7 image backups have such problems?

Backup / Create Image Fails

Windows 7 backup/create image fails because it's trying to backup both the system drive and a boot drive that is fat32. The system automatically picks both my system (local) windows 7 drive and my boot drive (another drive i dual boot from) to create an image from. Since image creation cannot be done on fat32 drives the image creation fails with a notice on how to convert the fat32 drive to ntfs (which is not what i want to do).

Size Of Windows Image Backup

I have win7 ultimate and i have 26 gb of data to create an image from. I made an image to the hard drive which was about 20 gb. I then immediately made another image to a blu-ray disk but the size of the image is only 10 gb on the blu-ray. Why does the same image vary so greatly in size depending on where you save it. Can i rely on the 10 gb image to be able to restore everything properly? Additionally 6 gb of compression seems about right but 16 gb of compression seems too good to be true.

Restoring From Earlier Backup Image

I have tried to find the answer to my query in the various answers on here but have got bogged down with some of the technicalities, so though it might be easier to ask someone how i achieve what i need!I have been using win7's backup and restore for a few months now - i do an automatic backup every week to an external drive. I understand that my system image is backed up incrementally.

My questions are:am i able to restore and image from a date earlier than the last backup - i created my initial image after installing all my required applications but would not necessarily want to restore everything that was on my drive when it was last backed up - there may be things i no longer need - demo programs etc or, corrupt files which have caused problems, hence the need to do a restore. Hope that makes sense! If i am able to do the above, how might i ensure that the earliest image is preserved and not replaced should my external drive space be used up.

How To Restore A Previous Backup / Image?

Ok so i use some programs that were not compatible with windows 7 that came on my new computer. After upgrading to professional and trying xp mode (too slow) i decided to just downgrade to xp and deal with it. However. I didn't realize that all the drivers for my computer are not compatible with windows xp so nothing works. I need to go back to windows 7. I created a "backup disc" which i assumed would be sufficient if i did need to go back. However, when trying to "restore" it says that windows doesn't recognize the backup files or something like that. I assume because it wasn't out yet. So. With that, no factory discs how can i get 7 back on my computer with out buying something that i already had?

Backup Image - Will Programs Copied As Is Without Having To Reinstall ?

In backup for windows 7 the term "system image" is used. Does this mean that the many programs on my computer will be copied as is without having to reinstall each? Looking to purchase version of windows 7 that will do a real backup copying all programs without having to reinstall after possible crash.

System Image & Backup Extremely Slow

I started running windows 7 backup, including a system image 2 days ago. It's only up to 17% completed now. I am running windows 7 professional, 64bit. The internal hd is 2 tb, 8 gb ram & amd phenom ii x3 processor, 2. 5 ghz. I am backing up to a firewire seagate free agent external hd. The mainboard is msi 770-c45. I have set the power option to never turn off the monitor or hd. I have tried other imaging software such as shadowprotect and rebit.

When i run those 2 together i get bsod's. Since the system image and backup features are in windows 7, i thought this might be a better way to make a disk image and backup since they are integrated into the os. But at this rate, the system image and backup may never complete. Any suggestions?
Oh one more piece of information. The c drive that i am attempting to backup has 686gb of used space.

Note: when i had windows xp with about the same amount of used disk space and used shadowprotect or acronis true image, the disk image would complete overnight. This is a new computer so there's no issue of upgrading from xp.

Backup Create System Image On External / Network Drive

I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit and i have 2 internal hdds plus a networked windows home server. When i go to backup and select create system image i am only shown the option of backing up the system drive (c drive) and not the other hdd (d drive). And as destination for the backup of the system drive i am presented with no option other than the d drive. I am not shown the option of an external drive or the whs network drive. Apparently the option of an external or network drive should be available as long as they are ntfs formatted.could it be that these options are not available for the home premium edition?

Automatic Image Resizing Doesn't Work In Ie8

When i open an image in internet explorer, if it's larger than the window, it doesn't resize to fit the window. I've tried setting, unsetting and resetting the 'enable automatic image resizing' checkbox in internet options/advanced/multimedia , and it just doesn't work. This doesn't work, in two separate windows 7 machines, one of them an upgrade from xp, one of them a new windows 7 professional 64bit out of the box, so i don't think it's a hangover from an upgrade setting. Any clues on what else i need to do to make image resizing work in windows 7?

Image Restore To Smaller Partition Doesn't Work

I have a 500gb disk with one partition running windows 7. I want to put the windows 7 into a smaller partition so i can make other partitions with a different file system, and load other oss.

The disk has only 60gb used.

If i partition the disk into 100gb partitions, then do an image restore, all the partitions are gone and it's back to where it was before.

Is there a way to do this?

The 'shrink' option under disk management only will allow it to shrink to around 250gb . For some reason.

I'm hoping there's a way to do this without a full re-installation.

Cannot Get Backup To Work

Just set up a new windows 7 64 bit system. When i try to run "set up backup" i get a window that says "starting windows backup - please wait while windows backup starts, " but nothing ever happens. Just hangs on that. If i x out, it changes to "canceling" and hangs on that. When i ultimately go to task manager to end it, it says not responding.

I just want to set up an automatic backup to an external drive nightly, but i can't seem to get to step one. Anyone else having this issue?

I do have another backup program installed - iomega automatic backup pro. I had that on my old xp system, and it transferred when i transferred to the new windows 7 system. The problem is that it doesn't work with windows 7 (which is why i am trying to use windows backup. ) I tried to uninstall it, but a window opens that says "preparing to uninstall, " and it just hangs at that - also not responding. I guess since the program doesn't work with windows 7, neither does the uninstall -
Or maybe it can't find the uninstall log. Is there a way to locate the actual executable that will uninstall iomega automatic backup pro? Or some other way to uninstall it?

Btw, i tried clean boot and had the same problem even with all startup items and services disabled (other than microsoft services and anti virus - i could not disable antivirus). Also tried the system check and found no problems.

More info: i booted in diagnostic mode and tried to uninstall. After activating windows installer, i tried to uninstall automatic backup pro. Instead of hanging, i got "the install script engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available, please install the latest version of isscript. Msi. " So i think the isscript. Msi file is probably newer than that required, not older, but either way the installer doesn't recognize it. Is there a way to uninstall with xp scripts?

Backup And Restore - Windows Can't Find Restore Image

I created an image backup with windows 7. It created a large vhd file and appeared to complete correctly. I copied the image to my thumb drive and tried to do a restore. I can find the thumb drive and browse it and all the files are there but if i try to do a restore it doesn't find the restore image. I also tried putting it on a network drive - it can't find it there even though i point it to the share it is in. I've tried using a restore cd, as well as installing windows and using the recovery in control panel.

The folder structure is as follows
Windowsimagebackup\computername
Under that folder are three folders
Backup 2012-07-15 232717
Catalog
Sppmetadatacache
Metadataid

It seems odd there is no obvious way to just say this is the vhd - right here in this folder - use it and restore.

System Image Reports Two Boot Drives To Image

I have a sata (boot drive) and an ide drive in my win 7 pro 64 bit machine. Is there any way to remove the old boot partition on my ide from the list of drives to image w/ sys image? I can understand the c: part (sata/boot) and the "system reserved" but i don't want to image the d: part (1st part on old ide xp pro boot drive that has 84gb on it that i don't want to bkup). Funny thing is that the ide drive doesn't even show up on the boot sequence in bios. I really don't want to reformat in case something happens to my new sys i can still run xp on my old one (i lost my xp install disk).

I just want to leave it out of the sys image list. Theres no way to remove it from the list without reformatting the d: part. (Old boot drive)? Can i possibly make the d: part. Non bootable without running the xp installation on it and make it bootable again later?Maybeny help removing it from the list would be greatly appreciated!

Installing Win 7 On A New Ssd

I have an upgrade copy of win7 pro (retail) that i installed last fall on my core 2 duo system, which i just upgraded to an i3-540 earlier this week (and with the new mobo, of course i had to go through the automated telephone registration to re-register my copy of windows7). However, i just ordered an ssd, which i expect to get next week. I'd like to move the copy of win7 to the ssd and use it as the boot disk. Will this be possible with the upgrade version?  (i.e. , Does the existing win7 install on the magnetic hdd count as a "qualifying" upgrade install?)  Or will i need to go through the trouble of installing winxp on the ssd first?  (Seems silly. In fact, i'm not even sure i know where to find my xp license key. )

Dual Boot Win7 And Xp On An Ssd

How do i dual boot win7 & xp on an ssd while keeping programs intact? S the title says i'm trying to have a computer that will dual boot win7 ultimate x64 and winxp pro x86 onto a ssd that is 64 gb. Then i would like to have my favorite 2 games installed on the win7 partition but all other programs be installed onto a 600 gb hard drive. I was able to get a selection after reading around. I first installed xp then installed win 7 but windows 7 overtook the c drive for xp so it was all mixed up. I want 2 partitions. But i was wondering is their a way to do this.

Maybe i should install win7 first then xp. I'm so exhausted on this and fed up with it that i'm about to return win7. I used diskpart to shrink the win xp partition b4 i installed win7 then rebooted and installed win7 using it's "custom" selection to install on the other partition but i ended up with the same results. Then i tried formatting the whole 64 gb ssd and then installing winxp pro on the whole drive.

Then i used magic partition to shrink the xp partition to 15gb . Then i made a "primary" 45 gb partition. And them made it active. Then rebooted to finalize that action. Then i installed win7 on the 45 gb partition and went to restart the computer and their was no windows boot mngr. Downloaded easy bcd to see what was up and it only saw one record of a o/s. If you have any ideas i would greatly appreciate it. For i am at a lost on this great idea i had.

Installed On Ssd But Extremely Slow

For some reason windows 7 doesn't want to install on my 1tb wd hard drive. It goes through the 40 hour install process and on the final restart it tells me that something went wrong with the installation and windows won't boot. When i install int on my 40gig ssd it installs in a snap less than 20 min no problems. With the ssd i used default settings on my bios, i didn't deactivate the floppy drive or anything. When i try on my wd hard drive it doesn't matter what i do.

I tried turning off the floppy, i tried unplugging every other drive, i tried every sata port my mobo has to offer, and no matter what i do it wont complete the installation, and it takes a million hours to fail. I've also reformatted the drive several times throughout the install process, and it still won't let me install.

Windows 7 Freeze In Normal Mode, Safe Mode Works Fine

I am out of ideas. Three days ago my computer started freezing within a few minutes after startup. Freezes with no mouse movement and no keyboard. Must shutdown using the power button. Happens every time i start in normal mode. Safe mode works fine. I have done quite a bit of reading and tried a number of things, so far to no avail. Quite a few error codes present, here are some:

Winlog 6000
Service 7001
Distrib 10005
Service 7026
Event log 1101
Kernel 41
Browser 8032
Load perf 3011
Load perf 3012

I have tried restoring, turning off all non-microsoft services, disabling sound, updating video driver, memory test, adjusting bios per g skill tech forum. All hardware showing normal operation in device manager.

I can't find the minidump .dmp folder in c:/windows. The only location i find for .dmp files is in the watchdog folder, and there are quite a few in there. Let me know if i need to upload them.

My computer is a couple of months old and has been working flawlessly until this happened with one exception. (I have been getting occasional monitor blanking for a couple of seconds followed by a notification that the graphics driver has stopped responding and was successfully restored. )

Can I Install Win 7 Pro Without First Installing Vista Onto Ssd?

I have a couple questions about installing windows 7 pro. First, i just bought a new ssd and want to install my new copy of windows 7 pro onto it. I previously was running vista ultimate. My two questions are:

1) is there any problem upgrading to windows 7 pro from vista ultimate
2) can i install windows 7 pro without first installing vista onto the ssd?

I was hoping that i could just enter my vista serial number during the installation of windows 7. I would think it is a waste of time to have to install vista before 7.

Ocz Ssd Drive And Reformat Installation Issues

I was having difficulty with my motherboard bios not reading my ocz vertex ssd and 2 other hd. I believe this was due to an incorrect setup of previous bios to run a raid configuration in ahci. The only way the motherboard was able to read the drives again after all cmos were cleared was to put a jumper onto the ocz ssd. I am now trying to reformat my ocz 60gb ssd in order to install windows 7. After inserting the windows 7 disc i am able to access the installation prompt, when i select the ocz drive windows 7 is unable to install, however it gives me the option to install a driver for the device.

1. Will i be able to re-install the ocz ssd drivers from this prompt?

2. Any other suggestions for a fix?

3. I am also having trouble figuring out which driver the ocz drive requires, because i am unable to determine its current driver version.

Upgrade To Win7 On Ssd When Vista Installed On Raid 0 Array

Best way to upgrade to windows 7(64-bit) on new ssd when vista(32-bit) installed on raid 0 hard-disk array. I have a full copy of windows vista (32-bit) installed on a raid 0 array on a pair of wd 74 gb disks as my c: drive (also have a pair 500gb wd in a raid 1 array as well). I have just purchased windows 7 (64-bit) and a new intel 160gb ssd and want to upgrade to windows 7 on the ssd.

Btw i also have a full suit of adobe photoshop (cs4), lightroom (version 2), photoshop and premiere elements and on-one's plug-in suite 5 installed on the c: drive as well and would like to have them operational after upgrading to windows 7.

System Image Recovery Can't Find System Image

I am trying to restore a backup system image to my repaired pc. It is wiped clean. I have the "repair disc windows 7 64 bit" that i created in windows 7. Using windows 7 backup i have a system image backup on an external wd essentials 1tb usb hard drive. I insert the repair disc and start the system. Get to system recovery options. I have the external hard disk with the system backup image connected. Select system image recovery option. Says "windows cannot find a system image on this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final dvd from a backup set and click retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options.

Retry gives me the same message. Tried starting with drive attached, not attached, same result. Click cancel. Next option selected is "select a system image. " No system image listed. Hit refresh, still nothing. Top of screen says "click advanced to add a network location or install a driver for a backup device if it does not show up in the list below. "  I click on the advanced tab.

Option to "search for a system image on the network" or "install a driver. " I select install a driver. Find the right driver for the wd essential hard drive (disk.sys and partmgr.sys) and when i click on them i get "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "  Click ok. Can't find how to load these drivers i am being asked for. Funny thing is that on the screen where i search for driver i can see the wd essential hard drive connected to the system. I can also see the system image files but when i click on them i get the same error message, "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Replacing A Slow C Drive With A Ssd Drive

I am considering purchasing a ssd and would like to replace my existing c drive with this ssd. I want to move my current install of windows 7 to the new drive. I have an upgrade license for windows 7 and performed a clean install as i upgraded from vista 32 to windows 7 64-bit.

Is there a relatively easy way to do this? I would like to end up with the ssd as my c drive and my old drive as a different drive letter. If need be i don't mind re-installing windows 7 but i wouldn't want to have to install vista 32 first.
