Keyboard Performing Shortcuts

Why is my keyboard performing shortcuts i don't want and don't mean to type? I have a new dell inspiron laptop (my old computer with windows xp was also a dell laptop). When i am typing, especially when i'm typing an email or anywhere else online (in firefox), i am unintentionally closing windows and tabs, opening up history and bookmarks sidebars, accidentally sending emails, opening up windows explorer windows. It's all from the keyboard - i am accidentally entering in shortcuts somehow, i guess? I have no idea. This was not a problem on my old computer.

I am a fast typer, but this is annoying the _ out of me. Is this a setting i can turn off? Is it windows 7, or firefox, or my keyboard? Of course i use the common computer shortcuts (copy, cut, paste, etc. ) And don't want to completely turn off keyboard shortcuts, but i am not purposely entering in shortcuts, they just keep happening. All the time. What is the deal?

Keyboard Shortcuts To Open Programs

I prefer using keyboard shortcuts (ctrl alt +[letter] to open often used programs. I set the shortcuts and everything is fine until the computer turns off or a system update restarts it. Then my shortcuts stop working. Sometimes the shortcut evaporated; sometimes it is still there but does not function. Either way i have to redo the shortcuts. I've noticed this with microsoft office suite programs, it does not affect other non-ms office programs like chrome or notepad.

Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working As Expected

Keyboard shortcuts acting upi have windows media center and it wouldn't stop popping up on its own. I'd be in the middle of something and it would pop up out of nowhere. Soon i grew tired of it and deleted it. But now, the keyboard shortcuts still work even outside of that program. For instance, the "left windows key", it doesn't open the bottom left icon on my screen, yet it does "enter" in text boxes like these.

Also my "up-arrow key" doesn't work like it should outside of games. In internet explorer it will go "back" yet i'm not clicking that button at the top left of the browser. This is kind of irritating, hope you can help and get back to me soon.

Keyboard Shortcuts Start Opening When Typing

I just got a brand new laptop with windows 7. I've noticed that when i'm typing for any reason, keyboard shortcuts start opening things all over the place when i haven't hit any shortcuts that i know of. Just now, trying to type this (very slowly and carefully), i automatically moved to the url bar, opened a new tab twice, opened my favorites menu, and moved to the bing search bar twice-while all i've actually done is type out this message.

Trying to type just one line of information, i have opened/switched to as many as 12 different windows! Is there any way for me to stop this from happening? Or is something wrong with my computer? I have never had a computer randomly open things this often as if i'm hitting multiple keyboard shortcuts (now notice that i somehow enabled italics when i didn't mean to).

This is driving me crazy. I can't type slowly without opening/switching windows let alone type at my normal speed.

Internet Shortcuts Do Not Work

My computer crashed so i purchased a brand new harddrive and installed windows 7 from scratch. My antivirus is mcafee. Since finishing the install any shortcut i make on the desktop to any internet site will not work. If i go one ie8 and save the site as a favorite, i can get there from the explorer. Not the shortcuts, even if i use the file button and create the shortcut while on the site. My laptop has windows 7 (purchased that way) and i don't have any problems with shortcuts but i am not using mcafee on the laptop.

Desktop Internet Shortcuts

I have two machines running windows 7. In many cases, both are reluctant to retain third party logos on desktop internet shortcuts. The problem is not universal but happens with more that 50% of the shortcutsi have only just purchased the second machine and up until then, i presumed that it was just one of those things with the first machine. The computers i am replacing were all running xp and did not suffer with the problem. Is there some form of setting that i can change to rectify the problem?

Network Domain Shortcuts

I've just installed windows 7 pro in our test lab. I have attached it to the testing domain and am looking to find out how to make shortcuts on the desktop for either the root level of the microsoft networks or for each individual domain/workgroup. With xp, i could double click on the 'my network places' icon, then click on 'entire network' and double click on 'microsoft windows network. ' this action produces a list of all available domains and workgroups available in the network. I could then drag one of these to the desktop to make a shortcut. This gives me access to just the computers that i'm looking for.

In windows 7, when i click on the network icon a list of all devices appears (after some time of searching). At this point i have to scroll through the huge list to find what i'm looking for. It just seems like to me that there should be a way to emulate the actions of xp in order to only get what is necessary. I shouldn't need to get all the information about everything on the network when i know exactly where i need to go. Does anyone have any ideas of how to accomplish this?

I was able to find a work-around by copying the network shortcuts i had created on an xp machine and they seem to work just fine, but there should be a way to get to these root level domains/workgroups without having to rely on a separate older operating system.

Deleting Shortcuts From Folders

How do i delete a shortcut from a folder without deleting the shortcut's target (file or folder)?  Right clicking on the shortcut and then delete only offers the full target (file) delete. Shift+delete will totally destroy the target (not backed up in the recycle bin). The icons: how do i remove shortcut icons without removing program? Topic under similar questions only addresses removing icons from the desktop, where the normal deleting procedures remove only the shortcut icon. But this does not work for folders.

Shortcuts To Files On Drives Disappear

On all my windows 7 machines, desktop icons that are shortcuts to files on drives that are not always mounted (primarily truecrypt virtual drives) regularly disappear. I keep many important links to things that won't fit on my taskbar (especially since windows 7 does not easily allow individual file or folder shortcuts to be pinned to the task bar anyway), and i really don't appreciate the operating system deleting my shortcuts.

These icons are work to create and organize, and the os keeps destroying them. Not acceptable behavior from an os. It is absolutely mystifying that this problem does not seem to appear on this web site, as a simple search on the web indicates that lots of people are struggling with this issue.

Incorrect Overlay Icons For Shortcuts

I rebooted my computer, and seemingly for no reason, my desktop shortcuts have a little software package overlay icon instead of the normal shortcut arrow. I've not done anything to try to change the shortcut arrow: i keep all the defaults. How can i set it back to the correct icon? Example of the issue: all these icons are shortcuts (. Lnk) files to either websites (redmondpie), programs (ie9 preview) or files (powerpoint file). The file on the far right is the actual powerpoint file (i created the shortcut to see if this issue affects newly created shortcuts, which is does):

Cannot Drag Files Into Folder Shortcuts

I have had a number of synched folders set up to transfer files from my pc's to my whs. Recently, i found that i could not drag/drop files into the folder on one of my win7 machines (i haven't played with the xp machine). I made shortcuts of other (non synched folders) and found that i cannot drag files into anything but a "standard" folder now. This was not the case just a few days ago.
Did something get turned on? An update change things?

Shortcuts Show Blank Icon

I have windows 7 home, 32-bit installed for quite a while. Yesterday i installed the microsoft online services single log-n. Now i don't know if this is a coincidence - i did try uninstalling it and the problem was still there. All shortcuts are showing the blank, white default. No matter where they are: desktop, task bar, start menu. I have tried everything i can find:

1) deleting the iconcache. Db, there are several methods and i tried them all.

2) using tweak programs that supposedly reset the icons3) resetting my background, monitor resolution, and icon size.

4) trying to recreate the icons by dragging them to the desktop and create a new icon.

5) clicking on the icon, properties and change the icon nothing works. The icons are blank in safe mode and when i log-on as another user. It is really bad when i have a lot of programs running and they are all blank on the task bar!

Ie8 Internet Shortcuts Wrong Icon

I have ie8 and recently i’ve noticed that the internet shortcuts in the favorites drop down menu have a different default icon. For some reason the icon has changed from the normal white page with a blue e to a globe. I know that i did not make this change and the only thing i had done to my system, windows 7 os, was install the firefox web browser. I did not like the browser so i uninstalled it but the new icon issue is the same. I’m not blaming firefox at all it just was the only system change i had made before the issue started. I checked the dll file for internet shortcuts and found this:

I have not been able to get ie8 and windows 7 to start using the classic icon and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions? I have an older windows xp machine with ie8 and checked the dll file on that one and found that aside from the addition of the globe all the other icons are the same. I can change the image of an individual internet shortcut from the globe to the classic icon but after a restart it changes back to the globe.

User Profile Not Found, Shortcuts Disappeared

Have new computer running windows 7. I was logged on last night, logged off for about 15 minutes, tried to log back in and it told me that my user profile could not be found. We had another administrator profile already created soi just created a new one but why can't it find the old one? I checked if any updates were done during that period i was logged aff and there was: definition update for microsoft security essentials kb972696 (definition 1. 77. 190. 0).could that update be the reason?
Also, the other administrator that could still log in had all shortcuts removed from their desktop. The one user who is not an administrator did not seem to have any changes made to their desktop.
Any suggestions for getting my original user profile back?

X6 Keyboard Issue

Recently purchased above keyboard and have noticed after a coule of weeks the #7 key at top of keyboard appears to stick down. Ie hold #7 key down and will repeat at a much faster rate than the other keys, almost 3-4 times as fast. If the plastic key is removed and i use a pen to hit the sensor it works correctly. Do you think it needs to be returned under warranty or is there something which i can do? I thought the key itself might be holding the plastic cover on teh sensor down longer than normal, but its position is consistent with all the other keys. I have checked for dirt etc under keys but all clear.

Changing Keyboard

I have a laptop with a japanese keyboard. I am running an english os. I have gone to control panel. I clicked the change keyboard. I added languages so that i have both english and japanese and both languages keyboard options installed. The ime too. When i press alt and shift, the language bar does change between en and jp. The language bar also indicates that the keyboard has changed too.

However, even when the language bar says the language is japanese and that the keyboard is japanese, the pc still types as if configured for an english keyboard. I have also tried typing with the default input language set as japanese, and then tried it set as english.

Does anyone know why, despite following all the steps; despite having text services and input languages indicating that under installed services that english and japanese input devices have been added (and yes, i pressed apply); and despite having a language bar that does switch between english and japanese when alt+shift is pressed, that nothing changes and the key board still behaves as an english (us) keyboard?

Brazilian Keyboard

I just received a new computer with windows 7, and i'm trying to get a brazilian keyboard to work with it. My old computer was xp, and this same keyboard worked fine. I set up a different language for when i was using this keyboard, and it would let me use all the keys (i don't remember what was the keyboard layout that i used).

When i try and set it up with windows 7, however, there is no keyboard layout that matches my layout. The abnt and abnt2 options look the same, and both are missing two keys. My keyboard has the to the left of the z, and the / to the right of the ;. Is there some error with how windows 7 has set up one of these keyboards?

Login Using Only Keyboard

When i leave my work desk i have to lock my station, i do it very often so i would like to login faster - by using only my keyboard. Is there a combination of keys that would get me straight to the password box? When locked the monitor says "swipe your finger" (i can't use my fingerprint reader at that point because the lid is closed, i'm using external keyboard and monitor) when i try ctrl+alt+del nothing happens, esc key works by displaying user icon and the button "switch user".

I must point the user icon with the mouse to reveal the password box, there is apparently no way to change focus to that icon from the keyboard (tab doesn't work). It's annoying that i must grab my mouse every time i want to unlock the workstation.

Using Keyboard In Win 7

I'm not visually impaired, but i prefer to use the keyboard more than the mouse. I am finding win7 to be very cumbersome to use with the keyboard. I know there are tons of new logo key combinations-i think i've tried them all-but it is still very difficult for me to move around explorer using the keyboard. Seems like everything takes 2 or 3 more keystrokes than it did when i used xp. How are other "keyboarders" or even visually impaired users coping with win 7? Any ideas on working more efficiently with the keyboard?

The @ Key On Keyboard

I have just bought and started using a netbook. I've got windows 7 running and have installed office 2007 professional. The keyboard layout is qwerty. When i use the number 2 key to add the @ symbol to what i am writing, i get speech-marks (") and visa versa with the speech-marks key i get an @.
The number 3 key give a pound (£) symbol instead of the hash. I have been to the control panel to check the region and the keyboard settings, but it all looks normal. Is there a way of changing these keys to they way they are printed on the keyboard?

No Keyboard Input Available

There is a user who started having problems this morning. The machine is 1 week old, loaded with windows 7 ultimate 64bit. The keyboard is dead, the only thing i'm able to do is turn the f-lock on and off nothing else responds. I tried plugging in another usb keyboard and then a ps-2 keyboard and neither work. When i was finally able to use the on screen keyboard to login i found in device manager there was an error 19 for the keyboard saying that driver information in the registry had become corrupt so the device couldn't be started.

So i look that up and find that deleting the upperfilter in the registry was suggested. So i deleted the upperfilter and rebooted and still no keyboard. I can use the keyboard in the bios and to select safe mode or normal mode but once windows starts the keyboard is dead. I've also noticed that everytime i reboot along with the usb keyboard and mouse a ps-2 keyboard and mouse is installed in the device manager with exclamation marks. I've restored to earlier times when everything worked and still no keyboard. Any ideas?

Keyboard Drivers Becoming Disabled

Keyboard *drivers* becoming 'disabled' (1st usb, then ps/2); show "!" In hw-lst, but win-diags find nothing wrong. This is a most peculiar problem. First my usb kbd driver went dead. At first i didn't notice it, as i was using the mouse, primarily, for input, but remember a hw-rejected sound from windows earlier upon logging in.

My keyboard wouldn't do anything. No led toggles - etc, but on another machine, fine, and on same machine 'fine' - until windows comes up, then kbd goes dead (once bios drivers are no longer driving kbd, likely).

Under keyboards, the hid keyboard driver showed a small yellow triangle with an ! In it.

After trying  reinstalling the driver (its the stock ms driver), upgrading it (no upgrades), repair ("nothing can be found wrong, maybe the driver is corrupt", but file kbd_hid.sys, checks out w/valid ms sig), i decide to hook up a ps/2 keyboard. It worked for all of maybe 20 seconds. Then a low hw reject message as win7 disconnected my ps/2 kbd! Unbelievable! Now both my hid kbd driver and the 'standard ps/2 keyboard driver show up with the yellow triangle with a "!" In it. But i can't figure out what's doing wrong with the.

I also tried system restore to day before any of this happened - no go. I figured going back further would be a waste, since the start of the problem was rather clearly defined.

I *thought* i had caused it when i tried to enter a sw policy restriction to forbid 'wisptis.exe' from executing - (the onscreen digital ink input dealy) - for two reasons - it kept getting in the way and i couldn't figure out how to get it to turn off (i wanted to use my tablet's native drivers, but wisptis was interfering and making the tablet good for nothing but digital ink (handwriting recognition as keyboard input)).

The final straw came when i was looking through my logs and found the security log (~20mb log) mostly full with security failures from wisptis.exe (i turned on monitoring of security failures, only, thinking that failures, should be rare in properly acting sw, and this software was clearly violating win7's own security policy!).

It was after i added the policy that the usb keyboard went dead.

But that policy went away from the first 'backstep' (system restore point) - but the keyboard didn't come back. After that it was downhill for the ps/2 driver. So, to be clear, the policy is not in the security panel - it was back to pre-init state (no sw policies in effect) after the 1st system restore. So that 'had' to be coincidence. But it felt oddly coincidental, that the only 'keyboad' type inputs left to use on the system were the on-screen keyboard and the digital-ink keyboard. (Mouse paths/drivers are unaffected).

Keyboard & Mousepad Conflict

I have recently installed windows 7 pro (64-bit) over my last os - windows 7 ultimate candidate (32-bit). Before hand, i had no problems with my keyboard and mouse-pad. Now, i can't move my mouse while i press a key on the keyboard (letters, space bar, numbers, etc). The mouse pointer just stays in place while a key is pressed, and even after i let go it takes a second for the mouse to move again. This is especially annoying when i'm trying to use keyboard shortcuts on photoshop.
I am not using any new programs.
My computer specs:
Acer extensa 4420
Amd turion64 x2
Ati radeon x1250

Win 7 Keyboard Issues

I have recently installed the windows 7 release candidate. I partitioned my hard drive so that i can dual boot between that and xp. Everything was working fine until i restarted and booted into xp to do a few things in there then restarted again and booted into windows 7. Upon doing so, my keyboard no longer works. It had been working fine prior to the restart. It is a compaq 134 key office/internet keyboard with a ps/2 connection.

I ran the driver disk on windows 7 prior to ever restarting. I also tried using a dell keyboard with a usb connection and that didn't work either. I have a password protected login, therefore i am stuck at the login screen. I have logged in using the on-screen keyboard and gone to device manager. First it would tell me that the drivers for either keyboard were not installed. Then it would tell me that they were installed, but they still wouldn't work. I was really looking forward to testing out this new version of windows, but it's not making a god first impression. I'm just glad that i chose to dual-boot.
