Resetting Computer For A New User

I just purchased a 3 month old dell studio 1555 windows 7 os 320gb hd 4gb memory. My question is this the person i purchased this computer from still has his personal information all over the place. I added myself as a new administrator but his name shows up in places like c:/user/john doe/documents/favorites. How and where do i edit the computer using windows 7 to show myself instead ? I also edited the computer to my name but it didn't change many of the instances where he is still shown.

Resetting Your Desktop Icons

I am new to windows 7, and out of the blue one day, i turned on my laptop and all my icons were surrounded by a silhouette of a square box, and they were all blown up to a very large sized icon!

I would really like to fix them so they do not have a border around them any longer, and so they are normal sized icons, but i can not figure how to reset my desktop icons. And furthermore, do not want to make the problem worse since i have no idea how it happened.

I am using windows 7 home edition, as i stated above, and the laptop is an acer laptop. Any help, and i would be very grateful! It is literally driving me nuts. I have always been very particular about my desktop, and now it is being taken over by lines and huge icons!

Resetting Password On Account

One day, i wanted to change the password on my account, the admin account by the way, and you need the password you are already using, so i tried it and it didn't work, so i shut down my computer, and turned it back on, and i couldn't log into the admin account, and the other account has parental controls on it, so i couldn't do just about anything on that one without the admin password. So anyway, i tried to change it and it told me i needed a floppy disk or a usb flash drive, and i don't have the disc to reset it so what do i do from there? How do i get the disc?  All i want to do is log on that account.

User.v2

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, on a wireless network with 3 other computers (1 with windows 7, 1 vista and 1 xp) i recently installed a network attached storage, a couple days later i noticed that under os/users i have myusername and myusername. V2 i don't know how or what created this, if it's safe or spyware or what. I didn't notice it until after i added the nas and i think it has something to do with that.

I deleted it and every thing was ok but i turned the computer off for more than a day and when i started it back up it took about 25 to 30 min. And when it was done the myusername. V2 was there again. Does anyone know what this is, can it hurt my system and what i can do about it or do i need to worry about it. The system is working fine, hasn't caused any problems, but i need to know.

User Account Name

I just installed win 7 home premium from using the win 7 ultimate rc. I backed up my files on the old system where the user name was "old". When i installed win 7 home premium i named it "new". Now when i restored my data, under the "users" folder the restore program created a folder "old" with all of my data there. How do i set my system up so that all of my data is under the "new" user account, or at least tell my system to look in the "old" user folder?

Cannot Create New User

In windows 7 home premium, my only account is an administrator account. I want to make a new standard account but i can't. When i open control panel > user accounts > manage another account, i see an empty box under the heading "choose the account you would like to change" i know from looking at help articles that my user icon should appear in this box, but it doesn't.

Furthermore, when i click "create a new account", type a new account name, select "standard" and click "create account", nothing happens. No new user account gets created, and there's still nothing in the box. My computer is a lenovo 3000 h210, with lots of ram (4 gb) and a pentium 2. 5 ghz dual-core processor. I've had it less than three months. It shipped with vista, but  i installed windows 7 (32-bit) from scratch.

User Accounts

I am getting windows 7 ultimate and need to know how to properly set up user accounts: when i set time restrictions for my son, using the standard account, i will use the administrator account to do this. Do i set up an account for myself, as administrator and then one for him , standard account, password protected, then he can change his password later. Or can i set the time restrictions later even though he has password protected his user account.

In other words, can the administrator get into his standard account after he has password protected it? If i need to set this up in advance, do the time restrictions carry over to his user account, saved? Can he modify them? I hope i asked this question clearly, please let me know if you have any questions.

Change User Name

When i very first set up my new pc (windows 7) and input some details, it asked for a name for the pc so i put clements in (this is my surname). Now i find when i go into my computer/c drive/users, there is a user entry for clements and i really want that to be trevor (my first name). I do have an initial login box of trevor when i power up the pc , but i want my user name under c drive to be trevor as well. Can i somehow change it or change the name of the computer to be the same?

User Account Control

I recently had a new hard drive installed on on my dell xps computer. Prior to having the new hard drive installed i had no problem with the vista home premium running in 64 bit mode. Since having the new hard drive installed i have had a number of issues, first whenever i try to download files from the internet it will not let me also i cannot view videos via ie8 "you tube, msnbc, etc). I have found that whenever i turnoff user account control (uac) everything works just fine.

Is there a way i can have uac turned on and still have everything work? Or do i really need uac turned on. My guess is that who ever reinstalled the system on my computer did something that makes them the primary account, although it shows that i am the only account and the administrator. I have tried correcting this issue via advanced tools in ie8 with no luck.

User Profile Problem

I have a new computer with windows 7 home premium already installed. I do not have a network, just the one computer. I have set up user accounts for myself and my wife without any problems. However, although my account correctly shows my name, my user profile folder shows my name as "oem". I am wondering if it is safe to change oem to my name. I note that when i access the user profile  folder via the c drive there is a padlock against it but not when i access it via network.

Multiple User Profiles

I have a new toshiba laptop with win7 home premium. I have set up an admin account and my user account, with the guest account turned off.

There are multiple user profiles under the user file on the hard drive: administrator, public, steve, steve_2 and steve_2. Steve_laptop.

There is nothing in the pictures, documents and video files under steve.

There are music and documents, but no pictures under steve_2.

There are music, pictures and documents under steve_2. Steve_laptop.

There are also two listings under homegroup - both listed as: steve (steve_laptop).

Not sure what i did for this to happen, but i'd appreciate any help to clean up this apparent mess.

User Folders On Desktop

I just installed win 7, did all the critical updates that came up (about 22 already), created user accounts, then in one of the "restricted" accounts i created a folder on the desktop where i copied some files from the old drive. Thing is, i turned the computer off last night, turned it back on this morning, got into that user, and the folder is gone! The search thingy cannot locate any of the files that i put there, like it was a totally clean install. Any suggestions?

Admin Problem - I Am The Only User On The Pc

I installed windows 7 ultimate 32bit version and then decided to go with the 64bit instead. So i made a full install of win 7 64bit but i am getting admin problems. I am the only user on this pc and live alone. I see 2 users when i boot up and one of them lets me install only certain programs. I also noticed that when i open control panel i am not able to open certain areas. I click on the link and it will not open. From what i see here is my set up is messed up. I want to reinstall win 7 and know what i need to do if i want only one user. I want to see win 7 boot up and go straight into the program without asking me who is the user. I am willing to reinstall the program if it will help solve the problem.

User Profile Cannot Be Loaded

Yesterday i tried updating my computer with some optional windows updates. I think they were for microsoft live office & microsoft silverlight. I know one wouldn't update (i think the silverlight update), so i turned the computer off. Today when i turn the computer on i keep getting a "user profile service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded" error. The solutions i've found so far you have to be able to access the start menu, but since the only profile i have on my computer is the admin profile i can't get past the login screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Deleting Old User Accounts

My computers fairly new and a few weeks back after using windows media center and connecting it to my 360 for the very first time and re arranging which files it accessed music and pictures from it lost its desktop background, and refused to let me open any files and instead showing a golden pad lock next to everything claiming i didn't have permission, it began asking me for permission every time i started a program. Being unable to fix the problem (using restores and adjusting media centre settings) i created a second account, which ran without any obvious problem and so began to copy the data across onto my new account which for some reason has a padlock next to it as well.

When i came to delete my old account the computer told me that it could save all the documents and files from that account into a file under the name of my original account, which i did just to be safe. Anyway its done that and im sure that i want to delete the files now to free up my hard drive, but when i try to delete my old user account it tells me that im deleting files that are vital for windows to run, also theres a new account there as well called mcx1 thats taking a large portion of space, so basically how can i delete these old accounts and get my hard drive space back?

User Account Has Reset Itself

I recently restarted my computer, after uninstalling my "dell support center" because it's been annoying. When i logged back into my user account, it was like i was logging onto a brand new account. No files were in my documents etc. And no shortcuts were on my screen. However, all my files are still on my hard drive. Is there something i can do to fix this and get my old account back? I've checked and its still the same account name, just everything gone.

User Accounts & Profiles

I have an acer aspire m3800 with intel core quad processor complete with 4gb ram and windows 7 32-bit operating system. I have both microsoft security essentials, and ca internet security suite plus. All software is up-to-date. A couple of weeks ago i had a problem with losing a user profile/account and not being above to create any new ones. This problem was solved by telephone with microsoft tech. Support (case no. 1130591745). After many hours we ended up having to re-load the windows 7 operating system.

Within the last 24hrs the screen became jumbled with many horizontal lines (like tv tuner static), and the computer completely froze up. I powered down from the power outlet, then powered back-up normally. Only the administrator's user account appears on the desk top now. The other user profiles still exist on the hdd (c drive) under the 'users' file.

Turn Off A User Account

My mother has several children that live with her (her grandchildren/my nephew/niece) and has put a password lock on her new pc. It runs windows 7. Apparently my nephew found a way to bypass the password lock on the owner account (the admin account) and created an account called ownerpc/back up. Via remote assistance (she lives in ny, i live in fl) i was able to delete this account, but for the life of me i cannot find an option to turn off for this and i have also come up short trying to even find how he did it via web searches. Can anyone tell me how to prevent this from happening again? Or even how he was able to do this?

Change User Folder Name

I just did a fresh install of windows 7 a day or 2 ago. I was upgrading from xp, and used the windows easy transfer tool to transfer all files and settings from one to the other. For this purpose, i created what i considered to be a temporary user called "initial". When using the easy transfer tool, however, it migrated the main account from xp (tez) to the "initial" account on win 7. I thought it wouldn't be a problem and that i'd just rename the win7 user account from initial to tez. I did this with no issues, however the user folder is still called initial. Is there any way to rename this to tez?

I did come up with one solution, however i don't know how well it would work. If i renamed the win 7 account back to initial, then created a new account called tez and simply dragged the contents of the initial user folder to the new tez user folder, would all settings be transferred with it?

Alternatively, is there any way to clone the contents/settings of one user account to another?

Administrator Cannot See User Folders

My user account on windows 7 is an administrator (i know, i know) and my son's account is a standard user. When i log on to windows, i should be able to see his folders and files, right? However: i cannot! If i double-click on c:users(my son) i see "you don't currently have permission to access this folder" i don't know too much about permissions and all that, but this is what it says on the security tab for c:users(my son):

System - full control administrators - full control (my son's name) - full control. I have full control but i can't see his folders or files? Now that same error message also says "click continue to permanently get access to this folder. " So i click continue and now i can see his folders and files, because the security tab now has a new line:

(My account) - full control mission accomplished, i guess, but what i don't understand is, and it bugs me, if there's already a 'full control' for administrators, and i'm an administrator, why can't i get access to his account unless i add my user account (by name) to the security tab?

Mimic Xp Power User

We are trying to get legacy software to work on vista and windows 7. Our software could be run by administrators or power users in xp. According to microsoft, "to use power users group on windows vista, a new security template must be applied to change the default permissions on system folders and the registry to grant power users group permissions equivalent to windows xp". However, it does not tell me how to configure one or give an example.

Can anyone tell me what i need to do to create a security template that will be the equivalent of a power user in xp?

Remove User From Laptop

How do i remove a user from my laptop? Changing user folder names and author names i was one of six individuals that received laptops as a gift from my church. My problem is that while my computer shows my name as owner, it shows another one of the other individuals as user. For example, userkarensara lee and if my name is karen, why is the other person's name showing on my computer. It will also show the other person's name as the author on my documents, or last modified by and then the other person's name. How do i fix this?

How To Rename User Account?

I bought a pc which was the store's ex-display model. When i bought it they had removed some non-standard programmes and removed their user account's password. I went into control panel and renamed the user account to what i want, i am the one with admin rights. I thought this was successful as when i log on and off my user name appears. However, when i go to start - computer - c drive - users i get 2 folders, one is called public & the other one below it has the stores user name and a lock icon beside it. I wish to rename this user account and get rid of the lock icon. When i right click i don't get a rename option. Does anyone know how to help me?

Turn Off User Account Control

How do i turn off user account control popups for certain programs without turning it off for them all? I saw how you can turn it off for all programs but i only want it turned off for those i constantly run like spore and other games. So please don't tell me to:

To stop the prompt run regedit. Navigate to the registry key
Hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentversionpoliciessystem.
Change the value of consentpromptbehavioradmin to 0 (zero) from 2.
Change the value of consentpromptbehavioruser to 0 (zero) from 1.

I did this but i want it to be turned on for other programs especially my e-mail and internet programs.

User Account Control Issue

I am finding the user account control function to be a total pain in windows 7, because half my programs fall foul of it and half do not.

It seems that i have to either use two account profiles and switch in and out between them depending on which program i am going to use at that moment. Or switch off the user account control function completely.

Neither option seems to be a very satisfactory solution. Is there any way of telling it not to react to the same programs over and over again, but to react to programs that i have not flagged as 'safe' ?

Ie8 Erases User Ids

I loose the user id's i have previously 'saved', when i checked the appropriate box on the relevant website. I have only observed the problem when trying to 'log-in to https' type websites. I have also observed that it always happens after a power 'brown-out', which happens a lot here in florida when we get lightning, hence the pc powers off without the usual elegant "shut down'. My pc is a desktop, but the laptop i have never has this problem (i assume this is because of the battery backup). Both
Machines are vista, ie8, and windows updated. I have tried all the 'settings' recommended on this forum, without success, please help !
