Unable To Read Usb Flash Drive After Upgrade

I upgraded to windows 7 from xp after using easy file transfer to save my settings and files to a flash drive. After the install, when i plug my flash drive into a usb port it shows up as cd drive e:. When i click to open i get a "location is not available" message box with an error message that says "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error". How can i overcome this to restore my files and setting from the flash drive? I need the files ans settings but since they are 7 gb i don't know of any other way to get them into the computer if i can't read the flash drive.

External Hard Drive Cannot Be Read

I'm using a maxtor (now seagate) external hard drive. I've had it less than 6 months and all was fine until i installed windows 7. When my computer tries to read the data (all my backups and personal files!) A message comes up which says i need to format the external hard drive. I'm sure if i do this i will lose all my data. I've emailed maxtor (seagate) about the problem but had no reply.

I've tried turning the computer off with it plugged in, unplugged it after restart. Didn't work. I've unplugged it when the computer is on, restarted my computer; then unplugged it and plugged it in again. Didn't work. How on earth can i retrieve all my data? Please can someone advise me?

Cd/dvd Drive Reads, But Does Not Read Cd

Upgraded to windows 7 last week. All went well. Over the past few days, have been ripping cds for my mp3 player. This evening, the cd/dvd stopped reading the media. I can see the drive in windows explorer. When i click on the drive icon in win explorer, the tray opens for loading; however, when i load a cd and close the tray, the read/access light blinks but nothing happens to indicate the cd is actually being read. Brand new cd with no scratches. Anyone got a clue how to fix this?

Raid Drive Read Only After Clean Install

Got a real problem that's doing my head in. It's happened before (on vista) but i can't remember how to fix and can't seem to get an answer through google. Story is i've been using windows 7 from day of release via msdn so i thought it was time for a reinstall and clean things up. So i did. But now i've reinstalled my raid controller (fasttrak tx4310) all my stuff is read only. I can create a folder on th disk and sub folders and i can save new stuff to the drive. But if i open and e.g. A word doc or excel file they show as read only.

I've used up 400gb of a 1. 3tb and can't backup all the files (don't have a spare 500gb drive).

Cannot Read / Copy Jpg From External Drive

I just upgraded to windows 7 premium 64bit. Then i started to copy jpegs from my external hard drive to my new pc internal hard drive. This external hard drive was managed by xp previously.

Suddenly windows 7 complained. It tells me that the file or path does not exist. With some investigation i found that all jpegs larger than 1mb cannot be read or copied. Smaller files are fine. Then i tried to copy my latest photos from my camera's sd card. Same problem. However, windows 7 then asked if i wanted to fix a problem on the card. I decided not to and "imported" the images by choosing it as one of the options in the pop-up box. It then worked.

So manually trying to read, open, thumbnail preview or copy any jpeg larger than 1mb does not work at all only since i have moved from xp to windows 7 64bit. Why is this? How can i solve the problem?

Drive Wont Read Dvd Discs

I just did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate on a hp pavilion dv7 1129wm laptop. The laptop has a dvd/rw drive installed in it. After installing windows 7 now the drive wont read dvd discs. It will read audio and data discs, but will not read a dvd disc. It says the drive is empty even though there is a movie in the drive. I have tried to update drivers for the dvd drive and it didn't help, i have also downloaded dvd playback software from the hp support website and still nothing.

Problem: Cannot Read Second Internal Hard Drive

I have just upgraded my computer from xp to windows 7 but am having a problem with it reading my second internal hard drive. Someone explained to me on this site that if i wanted to keep all my files on my computer i should move them all onto my second internal drive and disconnect it for the duration of the installation of windows 7 so it would not wipe it clean like the first drive. Now when i go to computer management to look for the drive it tells me it is invalid and will not allow me to reactivate the disk. I cannot afford to lose the all files on this drive, what's my best option.

Dvd Drive Wont Read Disks - Error Please Insert Disk

I recently upgraded to windows 7. The drive worked fine as i used it to install the os. On start up windows wouldn't recognize the drive. Finding that this was a common problem on dual boot win7 x64 i tried the 3 standard fixes (f8 on start up, change letter of drive, upper and lower field reg edit) i briefly had the drive working but after about 10 minutes (while i was using the drive) it crashed and disappeared.

I went to the manufacturers site and downloaded the latest software for it, windows installed this and said it was working fine, i can now see the drive but it wont read anything, every time i put a disk in (any disk) it tells me the drive is empty when it isn't and spits it out. I have tried the windows troubleshoot program from the support site, it detects a problem but cant fix it.

The device manager shows the drive as installed and working. The lens shouldn't need cleaning as the drive is less than a month old. Please help, i've run out of ideas.system - dual boot xp / win 7 x64, xp on samsung 1tb hdd win 7 on maxtor 200gb hdd, 4gb ram, intel core 2 duo 3ghz, asus p5g43m motherboard, nvidia 8500gt gpu

Dvd Drive Either Isn't Found Or Won't Read Any Discs

Upgraded laptop to windows 7 32-bit from vista 32-bit. Now dvdr drive either isn't found or won't read any discs. I've searched on here for win 7 solutions. Mr. Fixit doesn't work with win 7. So i tried the regedit solutions, but there is no upperfilters or lowerfilters in the right pane. Also checked with manufacturer, it is a pioneer dvdrw dvr k17. As far as i can tell this is a pretty standard drive in many notebooks.

Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

Win 7 Fails To Assign A Drive Letter To A Usb Drive

Windows 7 fails to assign a drive letter to a usb drive (in this case an olympus ls-10 recorder). I have a plug and play ls-10 recorder. It works fine on all of my xp systems. When i plug it into my windows 7 64 bit system, "nothing" happens. Upon further investigation, the disk manager sees the drives (there are 2), but no letter is assigned. I tried assigning, but i keep getting a message that asks me to refresh, restart or reboot, none of which works. I have tries to uninstall and install the devices - same result. I tried to assign the drive letters in command mode, but i get a "no volume" error. Ny suggestions?

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Secondary Drive Or Any Usb Drive Is Not Accessible

After installing windows seven on my primary drive (followed the installation procedures for 7 on 32 bit xp pro) all works fine except my secondary drive or any usb drive is not accessible.get error message they are not available. They are in the setup bios and in devices, but in my computer if i left click i get the error message.

However my secondary disk is a sata 500 gig drive. Windows 7 will recognize dvd/cd drive but only the "c' drive (of hard drives)> i have tried usb drives in addition to the sata but it does not read them, only tells me they are not accessible. The one exception was the windows easy transfer data sent to a usb disk made prior to loading windows 7.

Usb Shows Up As Cd Drive

I am on an hp pavilion dv7 notebook pc running the current windows 7 ops. I have my lacie drive plugged in and when i look in the device control panel i see it. Windows says it is running properly.
When i try and access it i cannot because it tells me to insert a blank cd. It thinks it is a cd player. Details of device shows it to be a disk drive. How can i change it to a usb? This is shown right below the disk drive, but how do i engage it? Simply clicking on it does not work.

Usb Drive Not Accessible

I have several external drives, all of which worked just fine under windows 7 originally using default drivers. About 1 month into working with windows 7, two of my external drives are now inaccessible, giving the following error message.

"Usb device not recognized: one of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. " Device manager shows it as a flagged "unknown device. "

Worked fine for a month or so, stopped working, doesn't sound like a driver issue to me. First one drive stopped working under windows 7, then about a week later the second stopped working under windows 7. Both drives still work just fine under xp. Any suggestions?

Assign C: To A Usb Drive

I would like to be able to carry my system drive between office and home in order to use the same configuration of programs on either desktop. Is this possible? Is it practical? For example, will a usb drive be too slow for running the system and program applications?

I have bought 2 identical machines both with legitimate windows 7 installs. My idea was to be able to clone one to the other at will, thus ensuring both a reliable backup and a clean install (this seemed specially desirable after "easy transfer" scrambled my computer. ). I found however, that although i successfully cloned one (no1) to the other (no2), no2 lost the "activation". The phone call is automated so i wasn't able to ask if i would find after "activating" no2 that next time i went online no1 would automatically be remotely deactivated. Perhaps someone can answer this?

Can't Copy From A Usb Drive

I can copy files from a cd why can't i copy from a usb drive? I know this is hard to believe but i'm having even more trouble with windows 7 security than i had with vista. At least with vista it was easy to turn off uac. So far with windows 7 i have only succeeded in turning down message levels so i get fewer messages for each failure.

I am trying to copy files from a windows 7 desktop to a usb drive and then to a different machine's windows 7 desktop. The target win 7 os say's i don't have permission even though i'm using an admin user account not a standard user account. The files on the original desktop were copied their from a cd without any problems being encountered.

Usb Flash Drive Problem

I have windows 7 on a dell inspiron 1525 (originally came with vista). Every time i use my flash drive to read or play files, or even just view files on windows explorer, it freezes up. The only way to fix it is to unplug it and wait, otherwise it will just sit there with a blank white screen. This never happened on my xp desktop. But what i wanted to do was back up my system. It seems to work until it reaches 25%.

That's when it freezes again. This also happens with a blank cd. The only external memory (besides an external hdd [i never tried that]) that works is a sd card. I don't have a high enough memory card so i'm stuck. I need something to back my system on.

Boot Up From Usb Dvd Drive

I know it can be done, but my bios only has the option, apart from the 'obvious' ones, of booting from usb flash - is that the same as the external usb dvd drive? (Have to use external dvd drive as one in laptop defunct) if not, i will have to boot from a usb stick - have copied the instructions from http://www.Istartedsomething.com/20081104/tip-make-your-pdc-2008-usb-hard-drive-a-bootable-windows-7-install-disk/ to make my usb drive ready, but some sites say it has to be ntsc formatted, and also made bootable with the bootsect utility. Which is correct?

Save As To A Usb Thumb Drive

My usb thumb drive is not cooperating. I can drag (or send) a file to it from the desktop if i "provide administrator permission to copy to this folder. " I can create a new file on the thumb drive. I can even open and edit the new txt file - but "access is denied" if i try to save the file (to its original name and place).

Some applications will save to the thumb drive with an odd message, but the real trouble is an application that flat out refuses to save to the thumb drive. Wordpad says "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. "

How to fix the thumb drives?

Usb Drive Not Recognized After Reboot

I have a windows 7 64-bit system. I connected my maxtor 500gb usb drive while the pc was on and it recognized the drive using the default windows driver. Seagate, which owns maxtor, does not have a 64 bit driver for this drive. Seagate and microsoft say the drive should work with the windows driver. It was working beautifully.

Then i re-booted my system. Upon windows re-start, the drive came up as "usb device not recognized". In device manager it is a yellow icon next to "unknown device". I removed the usb cable and re-plugged it to no avail. I then removed the drive's power cord and plugged it back in. The drive was instantly recognized again.

What is happening on a re-boot to mess up the usb connection? How can this be resolved? I don't want to have to pull the power cord on every re-boot.

Usb Hard Drive Does Not Appear In My Computer

I have an ads tech external hard drive that allows one to put any regular hd in the case and connect it to the pc via usb. My 2-week-old machine has windows7 running. After successfully accessing and removing all data on a hd using the usb external, i removed it from the computer, and placed another hd inside the usb case. Upon reconnecting, win7 recognizes that a usb device is being connected.

Windows also lists the device in the device manager and it is listed under devices and printers (from the control panel). Upon attempting to troubleshoot the device, i'm told that no problem can be identified. After rebooting with the device attached and unattached, it still does not appear in the list of hard drives in my computer.
