Upgrading 32-bit Vista To 64-bit Win 7 Without Losing Files

I have two computers with vista home premium 32-bit oem versions on them. I want to upgrade both of them to windows 7 home premium 64-bit versions, without losing any files, folders or programs.

Can i use the same family pack license to upgrade both computers to windows 7 home premium 32-bit versions, then upgrade both 32-bit versions to 64-bit versions using the same family pack license?

Will this keep the original files, folders and programs intact? Is this a reasonable process that will get both computers to 64-bit versions? Or should i just upgrade both computers to 32-bit versions of windows 7, and live with it?

Multi-boot System Win 7 64-bit & Vista 32-bit On One Hard Drive

Multi-boot system windows 7 (64-bit) & vista (32-bit) on one hard drive - do i need two hard drives?I have an existing windows vista ultimate (32-bit) system installed on a 500gb sata hard drive, partitioned into 2 partitions (c: and d:). I would like to make the system multi-boot so that i can back-track to vista if i have a problem with win7.

One issue here is that i plan on multi-booting vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit on the same hard drive without touching the d: partition of the hard drive. I don't know if this is possible, but i'm interested to see if it is.

I've done some research and have found that win7 has many compatibility modes, so maybe i don't need to worry about keeping an installation of vista on my system? I just don't want to be "caught with my pants down" if something were to go wrong with win7, like if one of my programs was incompatible or something along those lines.

If i can't multi-boot vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit from the same hard drive, can i do it with 2 hard drives having one os on each hard drive? Or, am i being much too paranoid about this and should i trust microsoft on this one that win7 will not have any large compatibility issues with my most used programs?

For reference, here are some of my most used programs: firefox 3. 5, steam, adobe photoshop (versions 7. 0 and cs3), ie tester (for web development), winamp, trillian (an im and irc program), itunes, skype, mozilla thunderbird (for e-mail), and fraps (in-game video recording software).

I know that this is a lot all at once, but does anyone see any foreseen compatibility issues with any of these programs and win7 64-bit ? I'm also worried about the compatibility of some of my drivers with win7 64-bit, but i've heard that there have been leaps and bounds made with driver compatibility on win7 64-bit (as compared to the mess it was with xp 64-bit). Is this true?

Xps M1210 Vista 32-bit Drivers Work For Win7 32- Bit ?

Xps m1210 with vista 32 bit- will the drivers for vista 32 bit work for windows 7 32 bit? I have had very little help from dell on this one- so far from what i have found, it sounds like the drivers for vista should work fine for windows 7, but i want to be sure before i install windows 7 on this computer and end up making it useless for days because a wireless card driver wont work or something. Can anyone tell me with certainty if the drivers will or wont work for windows 7?

64-bit Vista To 64-bit Win 7 Upgrade Fails

64 bit win vista to 64 bit win 7 upgrade fails at transferring programs , files and settings. I'm am trying to upgrade from vista home premium to 7 home premium. I've followed all instructions and kept getting hung up at the transferring programs, files and settings stage. I have turned off my anti-virus and disabled startup items and 'hid' services.

The cursor froze and it sat for 6 hours with no activity. I then tried a clean install in which i backed up and booted from the dvd. Once again i got to the last stage (completing installation. ) And once again my cursor froze up with no cpu activity. I waited 3 hours to no avail.could this be a corrupt pre-ordered dvd? If so, who can i contact to remedy this situation?

Printer On Win 7 64-bit, Need To Access From Vista 32-bit

Printer on windows 7 64bit, need to access from windows vista 32 bit, wireless laptop over home network. I have a home network set up with a wireless router, 2 pcs hard-wired to the router, and a laptop connected via wireless connection to the router. The windows 7 pc has a lexmark 2690 printer connected to it via usb port, and the printer is shared to the network. The wireless laptop uses windows vista 32 bit, and the other wired pc is xp (32 bit) sp2.

I can connect the xp machine to the shared printer via setting up a "local port" using the host computer name and shared printer name in the port setup just fine. But, when i set up a "local port" connection on the vista laptop (wireless), any attempts to print result in an "access denied" error. If i try to access the printer via a "network printer" connection on the laptop, it does not allow the connection to be made at all.

Are there any suggestions on how to make a 32 bit vista wireless laptop connect to a shared printer on a windows 7 pc on the same home network?

Upgrading From Win 7 32-bit To 64-bit

I currently own a hp desktop which came with the vista 64-bit os on it. Due to software compatibility issues, i ended up replacing the existing operating system with vista ultimate 32-bit. When 7 was released, i installed the 32-bit ultimate version on my computer. My question is, can i go back in and install the 64-bit version of 7 ultimate instead of the 32-bit version, and if i do is there any way (maybe in xp virtual mode) that i can run programs which do not support 64-bit operating systems?

Upgrading Win 7 From 32-bit To 64-bit

I upgraded a 32 bit vista laptop to  windows 7 32 bit. I decided i didn't like it (the confusing file system, and some other annoying vista functions didn't go away). I wanted to do a custom install to install the windows 7 64 bit version using the other disk in the package. I tried the install and was blocked by an error message to the effect "this installation is not compatible with the operating system on the computer" is there a way to do this?

64-bit Win 7 Upgrade From 32-bit Vista

I just went through a thorough effort to upgrade my desktop at home from vista 32-bit to 7 64-bit. Windows 7 upgrade advisor says the hardware is fine. I downloaded the home premium windows 7 upgrade from microscoft and paid for it. I figured out how to do a custom install and make a bootable dvd from the download. However, during installation i was expecting to be asked whether i wanted 32 bit or 64 bit. I tried several different things including booting from dvd. I got a 32-bit install and i cannot figure out how to get a 64-bit install. The product specifically says it includes both versions. How do i set the install to be 64 bit?

Moving From Vista 32-bit To Win7 64-bit

I have been trying to upgrade my core 2 duo machine that has been running vista ultimate 32 bit version for the last 3 years to windows 7 64 bit (what i run on my new laptop and love), and the whole thing has been a nightmare. I chose the clean install and also chose to format the primary hard drive. I'm not sure if it ever did the format because i never saw it the way i would on windows 2000, xp, or vista (the gui for the installation was extremely slow and unintuitive). Waiting for the installation was like pulling teeth. After about 4 hours it was around 25% done.

I went to bed hoping it'd be done by morning but no, it was around 74% done after the 11th hour. I returned in the afternoon to find that my computer was in standby mode and after waking up, it was telling me that it was preparing to run windows 7 for the first time.great! I thought. Except after i put in my computer name, system password, and the product key, computer has been frozen. I tried to restart the computer and went through the same thing, but after i put in the product key the computer just hangs. I tried keeping it on all night (after being on for 2 hours) but then if i leave it unattended the computer goes in standby mode. This is a train wreck.

After suffering through vista, i was hoping microsoft had figured things out but my computer is now a giant paper weight. I wish i could wipe out my computer and do a fresh windows 7 install but i've already paid for the upgrade and supposedly it checks to see whether xp or vista is installed (both of which i already had paid for and own) i'm thinking of reinstalling vista and trying the upgrade again, but if i can't get it to install windows 7 after that, i would be very upset and return this pos to amazon. Any ideas?  This is an older computer but it is 64 bit (core 2 duo), 6 gigs ram, 2 320 gig hard drives, decent nvidia graphics card. Has another 2 years of life in it at least.

Vista 32-bit To Win7 64-bit

I appreciate that an update from a 32-bit os to 64-bit is not possible, and so i shall have to run a clean install. Can i however, still buy an upgrade cd and use that to do the clean install, or will i have to purchase a "new version" as it were.

My processor is an intel core 2 duo (t7500) which, as far as i am aware, is 64-bit compatible. (I do have ubuntu 64-bit on it, so i can also assume so).

Also, if a 'custom install' (clean) is done, will it essentially install windows 7 as another partition and the delete the vista one, or the other way around. Seems a strange question i appreciate, but at the moment i currently have 17. 7gb free and according to windows, 7 requires 20. I could quite easily get rid of a load of content, but i'm interested in how the process works.

Vista 32-bit To A Win 7 64-bit

Okay i got the windows 7 upgrade discs from sony. The disc has 32 bit and 64 bit software in it. I'm trying to ask how can i upgrade from a 32 bit vista to a 64 bit windows 7? When ever i run the 64 bit setup i get "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x 86 (32-bit) of 64x (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. " Note: the disc is a 32-bit and 64-bit, the os (32-bit and 64-bit) is in the same disc not separate.

Trying To Multiboot Vista 64-bit And 7 64-bit

I have pre-installed vista 64 bit, and want to multiboot win 7 64 bit on 2 different hard drives. I get it installed re-boot to system selection, but there is an error message: windows system 32 winload .exe

It won't let me load win 7 only vista. I re-installed 7 with vista drive unplugged with same result. 7 is ultimate 32 and 64 bit version. Same with vista from hp. Do i have a way to do multi-boot on 2 different drives or do i need to re-partition  the vista drive to get it to work. And why does 7 setup ask me if i have x84 or x64 bit. I think it should say x32 bit or x64 bit.

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Upgrading To W7 64-bit & Hard Drive Is Being Replaced

Just a quick question for my situation. I'm in the mist of having to change my hard drive (due to problems) i'm currently running vista  32 bit. And having major problems. In an effort to strengthen my system i plan to upgrade to w7 64 bit.

This will end up being a clean install. Can i use the easy files and settings transfer tool to do the file transfer between the hard drives & operating systems (vista to w7), after the clean install. The new hard is a replacement on warranty and will come pre imaged. I'm getting the w7 disc at the same time so i plan to install and convert prior to moving the files and settings.

I did have some problems with windows backup so i'm a little reluctant it will transfer everything. I also have two other back programs: norton and a seagate just in-case. My previous experience with easy file and settings transfer tools always worked well.

Upgrading To Win 7 64-bit With Office 2007

I currently have vista ultimate which was pre-loaded on my dell. It also came with the usual pre-loaded discs for office professional 2007 - i have looked at the computer information and it appears that i am running 32 bit. What i can't tell is if the software discs provided are office professional 32 bit or if indeed it matters. The reason i ask the question is that i believe 64 bit windows 7 runs faster and my machine advisor confirms that i can run windows 7 64 bit on this dell.

So, can i load my current software for office professional 2007 and keep it compatible with the upgraded windows ultimate 64 bit. It is my intention to do a 'clean' install. I have limited understanding computers so any information would help, bearing in mind i am looking for the 'idiot guides' to upgrading!

Vista 32-bit Os/fsx Problem

I just bought microsoft flight simulator x (deluxe edi) for windows. On the back of the box, it says compatible with vista. So i tried to install it. However i keep getting an error message that says "windows cannot find . " And it says the file name. This is occurring with many of my files that i am trying to open. Also i get another error message saying how "the system administer has policies against this installation". Any ideas how to fix one, or both problems?.

Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope with having to use 3 browsers to get the job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http' and click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Xp Mode Is 64-bit Or 32-bit In Win 7 64-bit

I am planning on purchasing win 7 pro & installing the 64-bit version. I intend to make use of the "xp mode" feature if i can install 32-bit printer drivers within the xp mode, as my photo printers have no 64-bit drivers. I currently edit my photography on a win xp pro 64-bit pc, which is networked to a win xp pro 32-bitpc in order to print images. I need to know if "xp mode" is 32-bit - even when installed with the 64-bit version of win 7 pro. I want to be able to convert/edit my photos in win 7 64-bit, then print these images using "xp mode" via the 32-bit driversi intend to installin xp mode- all from the same pc. Is this do-able?

Upgrade From Vista 32-bit But Then Motherboard / Cpu System Fault

Vista 32bit upgrade to 7 32bit then (motherboard/intel cpu) system fault so replaced (motherboard/amd cpu). Now the hard drive had vista product key previously validated and the 7 upgrade key also validated previously. Both 32bit on the motherboard with intel cpu which had the system fault so do we consider a new motherboard to be a new computer?

Is a new cpu a new computer? Is new ram a new computer? It is still an asus motherboard different model works with amd cpu instead of intel cpu the ram is ddr3 instead of ddr2. The vista and 7 upgrade on the hard drive are 32 bit. I want 64 bit 7. Do i install vista 64 bit using 32 bit product key then upgrade it to 64 bit 7 or do i get an oem full windows 7 64 bit from the seller of the replacement motherboard and cpu and memory?

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium 32-bit Failed Installation

I am attempting to upgrade from windows vista home premium 32-bit to windows 7 home premium 32-bit. I obtained this upgrade from a download, and my installation is failing.

At 21% of the way through the "expanding windows files" process, the installation quits with the following message:

"The upgrade was canceled. Any changes that were made to your computer during the upgrade process will not be saved. " And in a bow below that message: "setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart and your previous version of windows will be restored. "

No reason is given for the cancellation of the upgrade. I have, however, run the windows upgrade advisor, which has shown that my computer is fully compatible. All programs that it advised me to remove have been removed. I've also removed all external devices from my computer during the installation.

I fear i may have a corrupted installation file of some kind but am not sure of anything. I'd appreciate if anyone has any suggestions, or has been in this situation before and or knows what to do.

Ati Radeon Sapphire 5770 - Win 7 64-bit Asks For 32-bit Drivers

I have windows 7 64 bit. I recently changed my video card for an ati radeon sapphire 5770. I had an nvidia before that stopped working. I installed the lastest drivers from ati for win7 64 bit (version 10. 5) after uninstalling those from nvidia. Everything seems to be working fine, but windows keep telling me that there's no drivers installed for my card, even tho i can access the catalyst control center. When i click on the link that windows provide, it always lead to the 32 bit version of win 7. Is it a known problem? Is there something i can do to correct that?
