Boot Up From Usb Dvd Drive

I know it can be done, but my bios only has the option, apart from the 'obvious' ones, of booting from usb flash - is that the same as the external usb dvd drive? (Have to use external dvd drive as one in laptop defunct) if not, i will have to boot from a usb stick - have copied the instructions from http://www.Istartedsomething.com/20081104/tip-make-your-pdc-2008-usb-hard-drive-a-bootable-windows-7-install-disk/ to make my usb drive ready, but some sites say it has to be ntsc formatted, and also made bootable with the bootsect utility. Which is correct?

Usb Hard Drive Detected As New On Every Boot

I'm using a usb hard drive (a redrive, from hitachi) for storage of recorded tv. Recently, i installed windows 7 on the internal hard drive for the same machine, and now every time the computer boots up, i get a dialog telling me that windows 7 has detected a new usb device, and asking what it should do (open the folders, start a slideshow, whatever).

I just want the pc to treat this like another hard drive, and not a removable usb peripheral. Any way to do that?  This worked in vista.

Laptop Does Not Recognise External Usb Dvd Drive

My laptop does not recognize the built-in dvd or an external usb dvd drive. But if i configure the bios to let the laptop booting from the dvd drive then the dvd drive worked fine. It could read the disc. One time, i removed nero program from the system and i don't know whether some windows files got corrupted.

External Hdd And Dvd Drive Loose Usb Connection

I just bought an acer aspire asa3810tz with windows 7 pre-installed. In addition i have an external hdd (wd 500 gb) and a iomega superslim dvd usb drive. When i plug them in they are recognized, and i can sometime use them for a while, but then suddenly the connection is lost.

I have searched every where for a solution, but the solutions i have found so far was about nvidia chipsets and making sure that the computer was not allowed to turn off the usb ports. Nothing have though help.

I have tried updating windows until no more updates were available and updated drivers based on drivers from acers support pages but so far with no luck. In case there is other solutions out there, then please just point me to them and i will try them out.

I also saw an answer in which it was requested to create a log and so i did hoping i could use it, but unfortunately i did not understand it. In case someone can uses that usb trace i also put it on skydrive: http://cid-d6ee7fade4f53730. Skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/. Public

Dual Boot - Can't See Win 7 Drive After Removing Other Boot Drive

My mobo (msi p7n diamond 780i sli / 570i sli) has a sata raid controller providing 6 sata interfaces
These are organized thus.

Sata 1 - [partition 1 - windows xp] [partition 2 - windows 7 beta (64bit)]
Sata 2 - ocz vertex - windows 7 home (64bit) retail version
Sata 3 - mirror a
Sata 4 - mirror b
Sata 5 - mirror a
Sata 6 - mirror b

The system was originally running xp on sata 1. I added a partition to sata 1 and installed windows 7 beta some weeks ago. The system dual booted to xp or win 7 beta fine. I then added the ocz vertex drive and installed the win 7 retail version, and i am able to dual boot to all three systems just fine.

However - i really want to do away with the xp and win 7 beta partitions and just run with the ocz drive. However if i disconnect the drive from sata 1 the system will not boot up. Can't find ntldr or bootmgr or something similar. I have changed the boot sequence in the bios to point at just the ocz drive - but it just won't boot from it.

Dual Boot - Move Boot Image To Second Drive

I have a problem with two different drives both running win7, one 32 the other drive64, on a dual boot system. I want to pull the win32 drive, but it also has my boot information for the win64 drive. When removed it will not boot. I have been working on this for 5-6 weeks. I want to remove the win7/32 and put the boot image of win7/64 on the second drive.

I booted from the win764 install dvd, and went to there pair your computer. The placethat displays the operating systems installed, none will show. I have tried bootsect from the command prompt. It seems to work, but tells me no partition on the second drive. Or on another attribute used, it can not find the path to the drive. I have tried rebuild bcd, fixmbr, etc.

New Sata Boot Drive Wont Boot

I have a new 2t sata drive (seagate). It took about 5 days of research to finally get my computer to see it. I used seagate's disk wizard to clone my older drive (ide). The sata drive was supposed to become the c: drive. Disk management does label it as the c drive but in "computer" it sees it as f:i disconnected my older drive and when i booted up the bios kept looking for the ide drive. Although the motherboard has sata built in, there seems to be no way to tell the bios that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive.

Also with the original drive disconnected i get a "ntldr not found. Press control-alt-delete to restart. "I believe mybios is the problem. I have flashed it with the newest bios i could find, (dates from 2005) but no sata adjustments in the bios. How can i make the bios know that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive?

Or is there a way to trick the bios into thinking that it is an ide drive? As it is, the computer is recognizing the sata drive as a scsi drive. I read somewhere that this is not a problem. In summary, i want my system to boot from the sata drive. I would like to reformat the original drive.

Cannot Boot In Any Mode, Even With Dvd

Yesterday my computer froze during the middle of a document. When trying to reboot, it freezes on the "starting windows" screen. I tried booting into safe mode, and it will stop at "classpnp.sys" and not go any further. I was going to try the "repair windows" by booting from the installation dvd, but when i try to boot from the dvd, it will display the "windows is loading files" bar, and then go to straight to the same "starting windows" animation screen and will stay there indefinitely.

I can't figure out any other way to get into any windows program at all, the only option i even have is to either enter the bios menu or "boot from cd or dvd" (which doesn't work, either) i have windows 7 professional 32 bit on a gateway 9310xl computer. I haven't added any new software or drivers for a while.

Remove Boot Drive When Win7 Is On Different Drive

I want to change out a drive, "f", but some how the windows boot manager is listed here on the drive i want to change. I tried swapping this drive, "f" but i cannot boot into win7 on "h". If i just remove the earlier version of windows xp using bcdedit(easybcd) would this work, i'd hate to do this and not be able to boot to anything. The output from bcdedit and easybcd is listed at the end of this posting.

As an added note you'll see that my win7 boot drive is listed as "h", i've no idea how this happened so how would i go about changing this back to "c" and whats the implications, i know i may have to reinstall some apps but anything else?

Cannot Boot Win7 From The Usb

I bought the 64 bits of win7 from digital river. I am running 32 bits if vista and want to upgrade to 64 bits win7 i did create the usb bootable, but i can't install on my computer. I got iso file and download it by using the windows 7 dvd/usb download tool to my 8 gb usb. I set the files as the as administrator before i restart the computer. After i restarted the computer to boot menu and choose the usb driver boot nothing happen!

Ps. When i open win7 setup.exe file as the as administrator, it says "setup.exe is not a valid window application". Can i really install 64 bit win7 on my 32 bit vista 4gb computer? Cannot Use Usb Keyboard In Boot Menu

Cannot use usb keyboard in "windows did not shut down properly" boot menu. Sometimes when windows tries to sleep, it cannot properly recover, or wake up. For instance, it goes to sleep, but then does nothing when i move the mouse or press keys. I've installed a hotfix for it and maybe it'll fix the problem, however, when i use the restart button to get out of this situation, a "windows did not shut down properly" menu comes up, with the option of selecting safe mode, etc.

In this menu, i cannot use my keyboard to select any options, i cannot press enter to select the default "start windows normally" option and usually have to wait for the timer to run down. I've only had this problem since switching to a usb keyboard from ps2. Furthermore, there seems to be no power to the keyboard, the caps-lock key doesn't turn a light on when pressed etc so that it seems like the keyboard is non-functional in this menu. I can enter the bios and work the bios with this keyboard indicating the problem may not be hardware.

Cannot Boot With Usb Keyboard Failure

I'm running windows 7 ultimate on a dell dimension e520, this has run without trouble since install. The machine is fully patched and with upto avira and immunet and a full scan with malwarebytes last sunday came back totally clean. However yesterday a blue error screen came up and before the machine powered down i saw a message about usb.sys but did not have enough time to read it !

When i power up the machine the keyboard lights initially work but as soon as i try to use it to boot the machine or boot from the install dvd the keyboard fails. I have a midi music keyboard pluged in, the lights on this do not indicate failure, but moving my qwerty keyboard to use a usb socket that works with that also fails.

Usb Ports Disabled After Every Boot Up

I have been running windows 7 for a few days. Been quite happy with it. Suddenly, my usb stuff started failing. After several attempts to locate the culprit i found they had error messages in the device manager. I re-enabled the ports and presto. They all work again. Great, then i rebooted. All disabled again. I changed/unchecked the power saving mode after reading up about that and it is staying unchecked. But the ports are still disabling every time i reboot. Running a 2 year old hp pavilian. 64 bit win7 installed intel core 2 quad. 3 gig ram. 2 external dvd burners, usb keyboard, wireless mouse. Nothing special.

Usb Lg Dvd Writer Not Working

I am having yet another usb problem with my desktop computer. I am running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit. For whatever reason, a previously installed usb lg dvd writer that i have had plugged into my computer for 6 months now has suddenly disappeared even though i have not installed/uninstalled anything except for the windows updates microsoft is recommending. I now find that the device is listed under the device manager's usb controllers section as an unknown device.

I have tried uninstalling the device and rebooting to try to get windows to re-recognize the device to no avail. When i plug the device into a different computer, it recognizes the device just fine. I have had a similar problem before with a seagate usb harddrive. The only way i was able to get windows to finally re-recognize the drive was to plug in a different drive of the same type-once i did, i could plug in the original drive without any problems.

It really seems like microsoft has some sort of "device cache" that is getting corrupted and once the device is unrecognized, there is no way to reliably recover. Can someone tell me how to flush this device from window's memory so that it will re-recogfnize the device? All of the windows help advice applies to devices that come with their own drivers but most of these windows storage devices use the built-in drivers in windows so there is really nothing that i know how to do to correct this problem.

Dual Boot 7 On Internal Hdd And Xp On External Usb Connected Ide

One of my laptops is an old acer aspire 5610. I want to have a dual boot system, 7 and xp, but 7 on the internal hdd and xp on the external usb-ide hdd, and by that, i mean a 100gb ide hard disk placed into a hdd enclosure, connected to the computer through usb. It also has separate power supply. The internal notebook's hdd is also ide.

I have read that installing windows on external usb-ide hard disk may be possible, depending on my mainboard configuration. I have already checked my configs and it *does* support usb-ide boot up to be first priority. Anyway, since testing it would be really time consuming (to try to dual boot, and if failed, roll back everything) i want to ask your opinions, do you think is that even possible?

Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

How To Boot To Preferred Hard Drive ?

Windows 7 on one hard driver and windows vista on another. If i put the vista hard drive into the windows 7 computer how can i boot to the preferred hard drive? I have a floppy disc drive in this computer. Should i look for a third party boot manager sort of program and put it on a floppy? Or does ms have a boot disc application somewhere in the archives?

Or would it be best to format the hard drive that contains windows 7, install the vista hard drive, then reinstall windows 7?

Win 7 Trashed Xp On A Second Boot Drive

I installed win 7 on a new drive for beta testing purposes. My primary drive has xp 64x and all my licensed software. After installing the beta software i searched the xp drive for some plug-ins to add to the beta setup. Win 7 indexed the xp drive and it immediately became unbootable. The first message was that pci.sys was missing. I tried to restore that program but failed to fix the problem. I then performed an xp restore. Still no boot. Tried bootfix - still no boot.

(These boot drives are switched through the bios. ) Any thoughts on how to proceed? I have a number of serialized programs on the xp system that are difficult to reauthorize.

Removing Hard Drive Causes Win 7 To Not Be Able To Boot

I have a desktop with two hard drives. I installed vista on one of the hard drives, and later on, i installed windows 7 on the other one. So i could boot into both operating systems. However, i no longer want vista and i want to remove the hard drive that vista is installed on from my computer and use it elsewhere.

However, when i remove the hard drive with vista, i can't boot into windows 7 either. When i put the vista hard drive back in, the desktop boots fine into both operating systems. I've tried using the original installation disc to repair windows 7, but it couldn't even find the installation.

I have a feeling that the boot files for windows 7 could be on the vista hard drive, even though i installed it on a separate hard drive. I'm not sure though. If someone could help me boot into windows 7 using only the windows 7 hard drive, that would be much appreciated.

Hard Drive (boot) Letter Changed

Upgraded from windows xp to windows 7. Before upgrade i installed a new larger hd. It was the only hd in computer. Installed windows xp and no programs. Followed by installing windows 7. When went to install my programs only then did i learn the computer gave the new hd the letter "i". No "c" drive is shown. No changes were made to the bios or motherboard. Just unplugged the old hd and removed it and using the same plugs to plug in new larger hd. What happen? Want my primary and boot drive to be id as "c" drive. How may i change it?  Will start all over if necessary. Once this is fixed plan to reinstall old hd as secondary drive and use it for backup.

Random No Boot And Noises From Hard Drive

Last week my mobo was broken, and i must do a complete new installation (so everything) with my win7.
Yesterday i recognize that my actual hard-disc starts to make problem ( not starting while booting, sometimes hanging with unusual noises) which options i would have to do a repair, without to have a full new installation, i am tired of this. Is there someone out here, who can explain what to do, to a user, not an expert?

Fixing Cd/dvd Drive

My cd drive has been missing for several weeks, and do not know exactly when it disappeared. I went through the deleting upper and lower filters as most places say, then rebooting, and it didn't help. I have created a new reg file and merged, and that brought the drives back, but they did not show that a cd was in. It has since disappeared again, and i do not have lowerfilters.

I have tried system restore, but i always get an error code because it "cannot access the file". I have updated the firmware from the dell website, and ran several different virus scans. Itunes and my computer say the drive is missing, but device manager says it is functioning correctly and completely updated. My dvd drive is there, it is only the cd drive. I am running windows 7, and have a dell inspiron 1750.

Also, i checked my brothers computer, who has the same set-up, and his registry files are all identical to mine, and his drive works just fine.
