Cannot Rename Folders On Usb Drive

I open my usb drive from my computer, add a new folder, right click it and select rename. After typing the new name, i hit wnter, then, wham!, W7 shuts down and reboots. This is happening with all usb drives i put into the pc. Have i missed a setting or something in w7 that might be causing this?
When i whack the usb into my old pc running xp, no problems, i can add, rename folders no problem at all. Just w7 won't do it.

After Upgrade Usb Hard Drive Folders Are Empty

After upgrade from vista 64 to windows 7 64, usb hard drive initially works, then at some point all the "folders are empty" and i cannot access files untill i reboot. Then same thing all over again. My setup was working perfectly fine with vista 64; i had a 1tb  seagate freeagent external hard drive where i had all my pictures, music and movies. These media was monitored by my zune software, windows media player and windows media center, and also shared on my network.

Then i upgraded to windows 7 64. At first it seemed fine, windows 7 recognized and external drive, all applications were still monitoring my media from it, and i was able to access the files. But after a couple of minutes of accessing the files, the drive just seems to suddenly go offline.

I can still browse the folder structure, but the i don't see any files, and folders are empty. In some folders i see the files (maybe the info was cached) and if i try to access it, i get an error to "check the location of the file" or "file not available". Once i reboot my system, then everything seems back to normal but as soon as i try to access anything, it breaks as before. It fails even more promptly if i try to download something on to the drive.

All the usb drivers seem ok. The external hard drive works normally on my laptop that has a windows 7 32bit, so no problems in the drive itself. I tried removing all other usb devices (i have 7 usb inputs on and two more on my monitor), i tried changing power options so that usb ports are not automatically shut off by the pc, i tried reinstalling all the hardware drives including the nvidia chipset driver, i even reinstalled windows 7. The issue is still not resolved.

Files Copy Over Usb Drive Can Only See Empty Folders

Using transcend f25 external usb drive: files copy over but i can only see empty folders (drive size indicates that the files are still there, though).

I'm using windows 7 professional and everything seems to be working fine. I attached my new transcend f25 usb drive (300g) to use for backups. I copied over about 20 gigs of archives and had windows run it's first backup. Everything seemed fine, and the available space on the drive is now about 230g, which sounds right. The problem is, i can only see empty folders on the drive!

Now, i know for sure that the files are there because i tried plugging the drive into an old xp laptop - bingo there were all my files! Can anyone advise me? This seems like a configuration problem, or maybe a drive error. The files were there when i first added them, though, so it's very odd! How can i see my files?

Unable To Access Shared Folders On Drive Connected Via Usb

I recently set up a home network using the new linksys e3000 router, which provides a usb port for drive sharing, backup, and media streaming. I'm getting a message that says the folder access is denied, and i should contact the administrator for access. Fter spending several hours with linksys support, i was unable to solve the initial problem, which is to get full control over the files and folders on this drive. We did the following without success:remapped the drive. Made sure i was logged in as administrator.

Made sure the workgroup name was consistent. Ttempted to assign full control with permissions. This was particularly strange. When i set permissions to full control for any group or user, after clicking apply windows would attempt to set new permissions, but then the folder would go right back to having limited permissions. I was unable to edit. I'm assuming this is where the problem is. Ny idea why i can't change the permissions on these network folders?

Cannot Rename One Of Partitions Of External Hard Drive

I cannot rename one of the partitions of an external hard drive with windows 7. I can rename it correctly in admin tools - disk management, where the name is correct - but in windows explorer in all the users profiles it stubbornly remains f:local d. I have tried changing ownership and permissions. I can rename the files and folders on the partition.

It shows up correctly in disk manager and i've tried renaming it through command prompt: label f: archive, all to no avail! I don;t get an error message or anything, it just remains called local disk in explorer. Also the rename box (right click > properties) is blank. Any ideas?

Move User Folders Off System Drive

Move user folders off system drive? Want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not individually, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e.got a brand new notebook with win 7 home premium preinstalled. Using win 7 language. I shrank the hard drive volume to 55gb.

Made new simple volumes. I want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not by individually changing the location tab on dozens of folders, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e from the gitgo. In xp, i could just change the "my documents" link on each desktop to go to e*. * Instead of c*. *, But with win7?

Like windows home server and most wise os installations, the system drive is isolated and a drive or 2 or 3 for everything else.get a problem? Just restore the system drive.

Unable To Rename

I have an interesting situation. I usually rename the system folders such as "my pictures" "my music" etc into simpler "pictures" "music", etc. For some reason, for these two, music and pictures, i can't do it anymore. I can rename the actual folders, but not the shortcuts that go in the "links" you create that appear in windows explorer at top left.

The shortcuts appear as "my pictures" etc, and when i rename it back to "pictures" as soon as i hit enter, it reverts back to "my pictures". How can i fix this?

How To Rename User Account?

I bought a pc which was the store's ex-display model. When i bought it they had removed some non-standard programmes and removed their user account's password. I went into control panel and renamed the user account to what i want, i am the one with admin rights. I thought this was successful as when i log on and off my user name appears. However, when i go to start - computer - c drive - users i get 2 folders, one is called public & the other one below it has the stores user name and a lock icon beside it. I wish to rename this user account and get rid of the lock icon. When i right click i don't get a rename option. Does anyone know how to help me?

Unable To Rename File Open

I have just got a new computer with windows 7 w/ xp mode, 32 bit operating system. A big part of my job is to review quotes then change them to jobs when orders are received. One part of this is renaming the quote file to an active job file. Yet, almost every-time i try to rename a file, i get an error telling me that the file is open or in use by another program. I know that the file is closed. Why am i getting this error and how can i get it to stop. It is taking me twice as long to complete a project file package as when i had xp.

Locked Administrator Account - Can't Rename

I recently had a new hard-drive installed on my laptop running windows 7, and during the process the technicians renamed my administrator account to a meaningless string. Now whenever i view things like task manager, it comes up with the username as that string, as opposed to what i want my username to be (my actual name).

I tried changing the 'computerowner' settings in the windows-nt section of the registry to my name, but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

After googling a bit, everyone seemed to say to rename the logged-in user in c:users but this option is locked to me! I only have two users showing there; my weirdly-named administrator and 'public'. The administrator has a little padlock icon on it and i cannot rename that user.

Unable To Move / Delete / Rename Files

It's a simple problem but i cant find any solution. I dl a video from youtube (the 'guide' i followed http://www.Youtube.com/watch?V=q-c5ldefcxa) and now i have some files with the size 0 bytes on my desktop that i cant move, delete or rename. I've tried delete, shift+delete, drag and drop in the trash, deleting using cmd. The feedback is that my comp is unable to find the files.
I downloaded a program that delete files at boot (gipo@moveonboot) but it returns with 'access denied' when i select the files.

I've also tried to create a new file with the exact name and when i do it 'disappears' into the file i want to delete, but when i drop the file it is deleted and the original file remains (when i rename the file theres no warning that it's the same name as another file). I'm out of ideas to approach this problem so please help me! Running w7 home premium on a dell studio 15 (don't think it matter but anyway. )

Ps. The files is just annoying and not dangerous in any way, also the ending is just a '. ' 'example. Flv. ' ds.

Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

Win 7 Fails To Assign A Drive Letter To A Usb Drive

Windows 7 fails to assign a drive letter to a usb drive (in this case an olympus ls-10 recorder). I have a plug and play ls-10 recorder. It works fine on all of my xp systems. When i plug it into my windows 7 64 bit system, "nothing" happens. Upon further investigation, the disk manager sees the drives (there are 2), but no letter is assigned. I tried assigning, but i keep getting a message that asks me to refresh, restart or reboot, none of which works. I have tries to uninstall and install the devices - same result. I tried to assign the drive letters in command mode, but i get a "no volume" error. Ny suggestions?

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Secondary Drive Or Any Usb Drive Is Not Accessible

After installing windows seven on my primary drive (followed the installation procedures for 7 on 32 bit xp pro) all works fine except my secondary drive or any usb drive is not accessible.get error message they are not available. They are in the setup bios and in devices, but in my computer if i left click i get the error message.

However my secondary disk is a sata 500 gig drive. Windows 7 will recognize dvd/cd drive but only the "c' drive (of hard drives)> i have tried usb drives in addition to the sata but it does not read them, only tells me they are not accessible. The one exception was the windows easy transfer data sent to a usb disk made prior to loading windows 7.

Usb Shows Up As Cd Drive

I am on an hp pavilion dv7 notebook pc running the current windows 7 ops. I have my lacie drive plugged in and when i look in the device control panel i see it. Windows says it is running properly.
When i try and access it i cannot because it tells me to insert a blank cd. It thinks it is a cd player. Details of device shows it to be a disk drive. How can i change it to a usb? This is shown right below the disk drive, but how do i engage it? Simply clicking on it does not work.

Usb Drive Not Accessible

I have several external drives, all of which worked just fine under windows 7 originally using default drivers. About 1 month into working with windows 7, two of my external drives are now inaccessible, giving the following error message.

"Usb device not recognized: one of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. " Device manager shows it as a flagged "unknown device. "

Worked fine for a month or so, stopped working, doesn't sound like a driver issue to me. First one drive stopped working under windows 7, then about a week later the second stopped working under windows 7. Both drives still work just fine under xp. Any suggestions?

Assign C: To A Usb Drive

I would like to be able to carry my system drive between office and home in order to use the same configuration of programs on either desktop. Is this possible? Is it practical? For example, will a usb drive be too slow for running the system and program applications?

I have bought 2 identical machines both with legitimate windows 7 installs. My idea was to be able to clone one to the other at will, thus ensuring both a reliable backup and a clean install (this seemed specially desirable after "easy transfer" scrambled my computer. ). I found however, that although i successfully cloned one (no1) to the other (no2), no2 lost the "activation". The phone call is automated so i wasn't able to ask if i would find after "activating" no2 that next time i went online no1 would automatically be remotely deactivated. Perhaps someone can answer this?

Can't Copy From A Usb Drive

I can copy files from a cd why can't i copy from a usb drive? I know this is hard to believe but i'm having even more trouble with windows 7 security than i had with vista. At least with vista it was easy to turn off uac. So far with windows 7 i have only succeeded in turning down message levels so i get fewer messages for each failure.

I am trying to copy files from a windows 7 desktop to a usb drive and then to a different machine's windows 7 desktop. The target win 7 os say's i don't have permission even though i'm using an admin user account not a standard user account. The files on the original desktop were copied their from a cd without any problems being encountered.

Usb Flash Drive Problem

I have windows 7 on a dell inspiron 1525 (originally came with vista). Every time i use my flash drive to read or play files, or even just view files on windows explorer, it freezes up. The only way to fix it is to unplug it and wait, otherwise it will just sit there with a blank white screen. This never happened on my xp desktop. But what i wanted to do was back up my system. It seems to work until it reaches 25%.

That's when it freezes again. This also happens with a blank cd. The only external memory (besides an external hdd [i never tried that]) that works is a sd card. I don't have a high enough memory card so i'm stuck. I need something to back my system on.

Boot Up From Usb Dvd Drive

I know it can be done, but my bios only has the option, apart from the 'obvious' ones, of booting from usb flash - is that the same as the external usb dvd drive? (Have to use external dvd drive as one in laptop defunct) if not, i will have to boot from a usb stick - have copied the instructions from http://www.Istartedsomething.com/20081104/tip-make-your-pdc-2008-usb-hard-drive-a-bootable-windows-7-install-disk/ to make my usb drive ready, but some sites say it has to be ntsc formatted, and also made bootable with the bootsect utility. Which is correct?

Save As To A Usb Thumb Drive

My usb thumb drive is not cooperating. I can drag (or send) a file to it from the desktop if i "provide administrator permission to copy to this folder. " I can create a new file on the thumb drive. I can even open and edit the new txt file - but "access is denied" if i try to save the file (to its original name and place).

Some applications will save to the thumb drive with an odd message, but the real trouble is an application that flat out refuses to save to the thumb drive. Wordpad says "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. "

How to fix the thumb drives?

Usb Drive Not Recognized After Reboot

I have a windows 7 64-bit system. I connected my maxtor 500gb usb drive while the pc was on and it recognized the drive using the default windows driver. Seagate, which owns maxtor, does not have a 64 bit driver for this drive. Seagate and microsoft say the drive should work with the windows driver. It was working beautifully.

Then i re-booted my system. Upon windows re-start, the drive came up as "usb device not recognized". In device manager it is a yellow icon next to "unknown device". I removed the usb cable and re-plugged it to no avail. I then removed the drive's power cord and plugged it back in. The drive was instantly recognized again.

What is happening on a re-boot to mess up the usb connection? How can this be resolved? I don't want to have to pull the power cord on every re-boot.
