Win 7 64-bit App Installations Always Default To Program Files (x86)

I've just recently installed windows 7 64-bit. When i try installing 64-bit applications such as firefox namoroka or google picasa 64-bit the default is always to install in "program files (x86)". The default should be "program files" for 64-bit apps. Shouldn't windows detect that it's a 64-bit application and default the installation to "program files"?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Program Files (x86)

Don't know if this happened when smp downloaded the new version or when windows downloaded a new version or when i downloaded j2se runtime environment 5. 0 update 3. Cause all this was done in the same 24hrs. But after all this happened, i am now not able to get into any of the c:program files (x86) it says i may not have permission or unspecified error. The only thing that works is the 64bit explorer and the weather gadget on the desk top. Have you heard of anything like this or would you know of a fix.

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

Program Files X86 Folder On Different Partition

Can i create another set of program file folders on another drive in order to save space on my c: drive? Details below:i am a new user to windows 7 64 bit. I setup my computer to run windows 7 on an intel x25m ssd and created a mirrored raid using two other hard drives. The ssd runs my c: drive and my raid has my e: drive. I am limited to 80gb on me c: drive.

I would like to install large applications that i use infrequently on my e: drive using new program files and program files x86 folders. My goal is to save space on my c: drive for important apps like web browsers and media players. Would i mess anything up if i have 2 versions of the program files folders? Would windows realize that the program files x86 folder on my e: drive is for 32-bit applications?

Can't Change Default Program For Image Files

I have just upgraded from the coreldraw x4 suite of graphics/image processing applications to version x5 on my windows 7 ultimate machine. The new version runs fine, so i uninstalled the x4 version. I then wanted to make photopaint the default program for editing a range of image file formats (i use picassa as my album and right clicking to select the program to edit the image is really great).

For some reason, however, photopaint (x5) doesn't appear in the list. When i 'browse' for it i can find the photopaint .exe file. However, after i select it and click 'open' (and the 'browse window closes) there is no change to the default program. The only correct file:program association i can see is for the native corel image format (. Cpt). What gives?

Program Files In Home Premium 64-bit Edition

In my recently purchased dell studio 1550 laptop "windows 7 home premium 64-bit edition" is preinstalled by dell. It has intel core 2 duo processor t6600 (2. 20 ghz // 800 fsb // 2mb cache).

Now in os (c:) there are two programs folders, first is "program files" & second is "program files (x86)". I made a search in google for this and came to know that "program files" is associated with 64-bit programs & "program files (x86)" is associated with 32-bit programs.

Before purchasing this system i thought that this system will only run only those programs which are 64-bit & also w7 hp compatible. But now my query is that whether i install any w7 hp compatible program (either 32-bit or 64-bit) to my system?

Adding Program Icon To Xp Mode App Menu

I installed an application w/in the xp mode virtual pc. After installation, there was an icon in the winxp application folder in my start menu. A few days later, i noticed it wasn't there anymore, but several other programs i had installed had icons there. I'm wondering if there is a tool that will allow an "after-the-fact" creation of one of these startup icons? I looked at the properties of the other shortcuts and see that it is pretty cryptic and contains a unique hex code, so i don't think this is something you can fat-finger.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. For the time being, i just uninstalled and reinstalled, but if it happens again, i'd like to save some time.

Win 7 X86 32-bit Only Recognises 3 Of 4 Gb Ram

Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) only recognizes 3 of my 4 gb ram. Should i upgrade to windows 7 x64 (64-bit)? I just upgraded to win 7 from vista (both x86) on my sony vaio vgn-280e which was shipped with vista home prem x86 and sony state that it is capable of 4gb ram. I have just upgraded from 3gb to the full 4. And of course only 3 usable according to system properties.

You all say that it's cos x86 oss aren't capable of 4gb ram but that's just not the case with everyone, i've read other forums where people have. And also where x64 users can't access all their 4gb, only 3 or 3. Xgb. I have run linux x86 on here, which uses the full 4, and have an os x leopard install which also detects and uses all 4gb. My bios detects all 4 too. Is there absolutely no way that i can get win 7 to use the full 4gb ddr2 (pc-2 5300 667) ram i have installed?

Further system spec:
Mobile intel 965 express chipset family
Core 2 duo 667mhz t5450 cpus
Intel gma x3100 video (total available graphics memory: 358mb - 64 system, 294 shared)

Also: if i upgrade to win 7 x64, and the full 4gb ram is utilized by the system, isn't the trade-off that an x64 os is more demanding on system resources including ram? Ie. Probably performance-wise i'm not any better off?

Extra question to you: how do i update bios? My bios is showing the full 4 actually, so is my os x install (and using it too). But win 7 x86 says 4 installed, using 3. How can i tell if that extra 1 is or isn't "wasted", ie is it going to graphics (c. 300mb in my case) etc?

Setting Live Mail Program As Default Program

I am trying to set windows 7 live mail program as a default program. It does not show up as an option on my "set default programs list". I know that i have it because i am using the program. Where else can it be? I asked this question earlier in the context of trying to attach smaller picture files to an email. I followed the written instructions in the help section and those of the person who replied to my earlier question(ramesh). They both said to select live mail from the default programs list-but as i said before it is not on the list. Do you have any other suggestions?

Two Installations For Same Monitor

I recently installed windows 7 replacing vista on my hp pavillion. After some difficulty which required a denovo installation versus an upgrade, i managed to get windows 7 functioning. However, when playing a game (cod waw, etc) if i get killed and the game restarts, there is a 4-10 sec delay in the screen returning to the game scene. I can hear the sound immediately but the video lags. When i look at the control panel => monitors, it shows that the monitor is installed twice. How do i remove one of the installations?

Accidentally Set Same Default Program

I was trying to open dell webcam central because it wasn't working. I right click and picked open with, then pick default opener. I did not notice that the box that says something along the lines of "make default for all programs" was checked. Now any time i try to open any program it opens the webcam. I have tried doing system restore, but received an error message concerning a file problem. It said to try turning off my antivirus, which i did and it still didn't work. I've tried to go back and select the default program for each program, but it doesn't change anything.

Default Program / Icon Open Up Issue

My sister recently received an hp notebook as a gift with windows 7 installed on it out of the box. For the first few weeks it was running fine and then sometime last week while uploading pictures from her digital camera on the default program, it did something to where all the icons on the desktop and the start menu are the microsoft office picture manager icon. Whenever you click any icon, say for google chrome, or itunes, it will open up picture manager. The only icons ive been able to get anywhere with have been the system tools and i am not really sure what to uninstall to make the default program go away.

Icons Issue When Accidentally Change Default Program

I accidentally changed the default program used to open .zip files under one of my user accounts (in windows 7 home premium 64-bit). Based on another user account, i figured out that it should be set to windows explorer. Changing it back restored the functionality - so zip files are once again opening correctly. But the .zip files now appear as generic windows explorer icons rather than the previous compressed folder icon (looks like a folder with a zipper). Is there any way to restore the zip icon?

Upgrading 32-bit Vista To 64-bit Win 7 Without Losing Files

I have two computers with vista home premium 32-bit oem versions on them. I want to upgrade both of them to windows 7 home premium 64-bit versions, without losing any files, folders or programs.

Can i use the same family pack license to upgrade both computers to windows 7 home premium 32-bit versions, then upgrade both 32-bit versions to 64-bit versions using the same family pack license?

Will this keep the original files, folders and programs intact? Is this a reasonable process that will get both computers to 64-bit versions? Or should i just upgrade both computers to 32-bit versions of windows 7, and live with it?
