Change Hard Disk After Windows 7 Was Activated

I have one hp desktop with vista 64, i upgraded it to win7 by the upgrade disk mailed to me. My hard disk is 500g seagate. Thanks for the 7200. 11 seagate bad reputation, i might need to change it, in case burned. My question is :

Can i re-do the upgrade win7 on a different hdd in the future and activate it, or i have to stick with the same hdd after the win7 activated. What about motherboard, can i change motherboard after win7 activated? Or i have to change my mb before the win7 activation. Or put it this way, after the win7 activated, can i still change all the hw parts, or some restriction applied?

Programs Needsto Reinstall After Disk Cleaning

Whenever i do some system maintenance, for example using disk cleaner and registry cleaner software, i find that some programs want to reinstall when i start them. They then ask for the program . Msi file prefixed by 'keep' for example 'keep_memory-map-europe-eng. Msi', which isn't found. I usually have to reinstall the programs using the original installation file. I've never had this happen with previous versions of windows. Fter i've reinstalled the programs, i've searched my hard drive for any msi files prefixed by 'keep', and they don't exist, so no wonder they aren't found. Can anybody explain what is going on here, please?

Activation Problem After Disk Change

I have a several year old computer that came with winxp pre-installed. At some point i upgraded to vista and more recently to win7. Then i had a hard disk failure and had to start over with a new drive. I don't have the original winxp disk, so i installed win7 directly. The normal activation process won't work, of course, since there's no previous version of windows on the computer. I have the product key for the original winxp (from a sticker on the computer case), plus keys for the vista and win7 upgrades. Who do i contact at microsoft to activate my legal win7 product manually?

Reinstall Win 7 Onto New Hard Drive

If you have installed windows 7 and your hard drive fails - will you be able to re-install or will you have to buy windows 7 again to install it on your new drive? I imagine windows license will still be effectively 'active' on the failed drive? Or can you obtain a like a mac code for mobiles to remove and transfer the license from the failed drive to your new one?

Reinstall Win 7 On A New Hard Drive

I am thinking about upgrading to a solid state hard drive and currently have windows 7 home premium installed. My question is: is it possible to install windows on the new drive:a) without the product activation having a fitb) losing all my programs and documents, especially office 2007 - which may also have activation issues?I am running the 64 bit version of windows 7 at the moment. I upgraded from vista 64 home premium, so have the full vista 64 bit dvd and the windows 7 upgrade disc.

Both are legit with valid product keys (although i think the vista key is permanently deactivated by using the upgrade). Would i be able to install vista (without activation) then run the upgrade disc for a in-place upgrade? Or do i have to do it another way? I am not going to be changing any other hardware during the upgrade. I have space on other drives to perform backups if that is required.

Hard Disk Cleanup

I did something dumb. I moved a program (not installed a program) to program files (not program files(x86)) of my local c hard disk. I realize it shouldn't be there and want it off. When i look at the instructions for disk clean up i get confused about what to choose and find that for such  a potentially ruinous application the instructions are too simplistic. I don't want to ruin anything and want to be sure i'm doing the right thing first. I have windows 7 pro.

The program does not show up at the control panel uninstall although the uninstall should be with the program. I can't find it anywhere. The program seems to work fine but i'd like to install it properly. Everything is working fine so i'd rather leave things as is if i would run a risk of any malfunctions. So if anyone out there can convince me on how to get rid of the offending program i'd bevery thankful.

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Hard Disk Space Unusable

I am using windows 7 32 bit edition on dell inspiron 1545. The specifications are
Intel core 2 duo
2 gb ram
250 gb hard disk

There is only one drive ( c drive ) in the partition. Only 232. 77 gb is allocated out of 250 gb. The problem is that 118 mb is unallocated. It was the oem's partition but i formatted it because i didnot knew what it was for. The left over 118 mb cannot be merged with 232. 77 gb. It only shows the option of creating new drive. On the other hand c drive does not show the option of extend volume. How can i use the 118 mb ? Do i have to format ?

Purchased upgrade directly from microsoft was one of the first to receive it. Installed it successfully last fall. Had a hard drive crash (seagate firmware problem) and my backup drive did not recover operating system (also seagate, 0 for 2). Had to reinstall vista using recovery disks. Now i can't load windows 7 upgrade, does not get past compatibility check.compatibility report on my desktop was empty. Downloaded and ran the windows 7 compatibility software. It said that i was good to go for the upgrade. Tried to reinstall windows 7, did not get past compatibility check.

How To Change Hard Drive Icon Images?

How do you change hard drive icon images? I have an odd problem that just occurred in windows 7. I have several internal hard drives and 1 external hard drive. The external drive has always had its own unique icon and the internal hard drives all have the same icon image.

But somehow, the external drive now has an icon image of an internal drive, and my largest drive, a 1. 5tb hd, is showing the icon previously used by the external hard drive. I can't figure out why this happened, or how to change this back to the way it was. There is no performance issue, its just confusing since i've seen that external drive image so long i automatically go for the image when in my computer or explorer, and now that means i'm often selecting the wrong drive.

I click on properties>customize then select change folder image and select a hard drive icon that i want for each drive but it never changes the icon. And i am pointing to a proper *. Ico icon image file. Anyone have any ideas on this issue?

Unable To Use 2 Hard Disk Through Usb Connection Simultaneously

Unable to use 2 external hard disk through usb connection simultaneously connected - with each disk of different capacity. When using 2 external hard drive one of 1 tb another of 2 tb on a single computer together - one of them gets recognized properly the other one does not get recognized. Inserting the same drives one at a time make them work fine. The drives are seagate freeagent drives.

The computer nearly hangs when the drive that is not properly recognized is accessed. If it does not hangs it may show situations such as drive needs to be formatted - or does not have any data etc. I am facing these on problems in two computers - one core 2 duo desktop pc using intel motherboard and running windows 2008 server (with all important updates applied) and another core 2 duo dell inspiron laptop intel chipset running windows vista home basic (with all important updates applied). I am sure it is driver issue - but the drivers are provided by microsoft not seagate here.

Error Message - Disk Is Corrupt Or Unreadable - External Hard Drive

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Tried everything, i can plug it into windows 7 pro x64 and get an immediate prompt to reformat, followed by disc is corrupt or unreadable. I can disconnect immediately and plug into a xp home computer and it works just fine.

Tried doing the security allow all users so its not locked from this new computer, didn't work, installing drivers hasn't worked, basically at a loss here, not enough room to back it up on the working computer, format on the new, and reinstall it on newly formatted hdd.

Win 7 Sees External Usb Hard Disk But Can't Access It

I'm using windows 7 home premium and had a power supply go out causing my computer to shut down in the middle of moving some large files to a fantom 1 tb external usb hard disk. I've got the system back up and running (after repairing the boot disk that had a corrupt boot sector) but when i plug in the external disk, windows won't allow me to access files. It does recognize the drive when i plug it in but if i go to properties and try to look at drive details or do disk maintenance, it gives an error message saying it can't access the drive. Also, the external drive is not partitioned.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the fat or partition table that got messed up when the power went out. I ran the easeus data recovery wizard-it was able to access the drive just fine and tells me the data is still there.

Any thoughts?

Cannot Install Win 7 On Sata Hard Disk - Intel 945 Chipset Motherboard

I troubleshoot more than one pc with dual boot system which run windows xp and windows 7. Which system are most latest- intel g31 chipset, 2gb ram, 500 gb sata hdd, 2. 5 ghz intel dual core etc.
But, now i face some installation problem with my pc. After reboot, when pc want to start from dvd, i press the space key from keyboard and the setup start to copy installation file in 2 stage and i find it complete the copy process. And pc going to start up, but, but a green color bar running through a tube for about 2 hours. Nothing happen. Read more at the forum.

Moving Data From 1st Disk To 2nd Disk

I installed my w7 on a single disk pc then i added a second disk for data. I want to have all my data (documents, photos, music, etc. ) In this second disk. In xp, when i did so, i copy my documents from "documents and settings" folder to the new location (d:/) and i was done. Now in w7 i open the "user" folder i found that files are not on a single folder but that there are several document folders (images, documents, etc. ) And settings folders (favorites, etc. ). May i copy all the user folder to the new location or i must leave there some of them in c:/system/users? In xp, when i move my documents to d:, every thing was redirected there (default1 saving folder, default download folder, defautl music folder, etc. ) In w7, would happen the same? The link on the desktop will redirect me to the location or may continue pointing the old one.

Disk Read Error And Recovery Disk Not Working

I have a toshiba satellite c650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that i have read about on the internet. I have made a windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has windows 7 installed. When i use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why i am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

License Ownership

I have a pc running windows vista professional 64bit and would like to upgrade to the windows 7 version that is equivalent to this. I also have a laptop currently running windows xp media center edition (sp3) and is not compatible with windows 7 because of hardware restrictions. This laptop is compatible with windows vista and i would like to upgrade to it. My questions are as follows:

Which windows 7 version is equivalent with windows vista professional 64-bit and will allow a simple upgrade rather than a clean install? Once i upgrade the pc to windows 7 do i still own the license to the windows vista version that was originally installed on the pc and use it to upgrade the laptop running windows xp to vista?

License Shuffling

I have laptops: the newest is a 64-bit hp, with win7 home premium (w7hp) pre-installed. Also have a 32-bit sony vaio, with xpprosp3 installed. Lastly, have a recently-assembled 64-bit amd desktop without an o/s at the moment. I also own 2 licensed copies of win7 ultimate (w7u), one 64-bit, and the other 32-bit for the vaio laptop. I'd like to upgrade the hp laptop to w7u, and "transfer" the w7hp license via the product key to the recently-built desktop.

Questions: can i use the w7u dvd to install and transfer w7hp from the hp laptop to the desktop box? In other words, can i install the w7hp subset of w7u from the w7u dvd and transfer the license from the hp laptop to the desktop? I'd then upgrade w7hp on the hp laptop to w7u using the same distribution dvd.

Activating Second License

I recently bought a office home and student 2007 suite. I activated the license on my son's computer in south africa. As the home  office package allows me 3 licenses, i would now like to activate a second license. I am currently living in sweden for the next couple of months. How do i now activate the second license in a different country. ?

Although the box says that there is an activation restriction (south africa only), the salesman at the pc shop told me that i should be able to activate the second and the third license in different countries. However the activation keeps on failing. Can you please suggest what i should do to install the second license in a different country?

Cannot Reuse License

I'm trying to re-activate my retail copy of win7 home premium but having some problems, had to buy a new motherboard as my old one died on me which windows doesn't seem to like as it's giving me an 'unable to activate product' message.

Tried phoning up the activation line and that's telling me that my key is not valid for use on more then one computer, but i was under the impression that non-oem keys could be re-activated as long as they were not being used on multiple machines at the same time.

Is this true and if so where do i need to go to sort this out? Don't particularly want to have to buy a new £80 copy just because of a previous hardware issue, would be a 'little' bit unfair.

License & Activation

I own a pc at home which had xp sp2 installed. I also own a laptop which came with oem vista home premium which i upgraded to vista ultimate. (Upgrade from home premium to ultimate boxed product). Recently i bought a windows 7 ultimate ( full package boxed product) and upgraded my laptop to win 7 ultimate. I installed the same media to my home pc to feel how it works in the old pc. It works fine but obvious can not activate.

I bought one more win7 home premium (boxed product) for my home pc with win 7 ultimate.

In the mean time i found the in-built camera in my laptop is not recognized at all after win 7 installation and when the oem service people checked and advised to go back to vista if i need to use the webcam. I have following questions

1. If i revert to vista in my laptop can i use the product key of win 7 ultimate in my home pc.

2. If i keep win 7 in my laptop can i use the vista ultimate in another computer ? Though it is upgrade boxed product i remember it had a clean install option.

3. Can i use the win 7 home premium product key in my home pc with win 7 ultimate installed yet to be activated.

Could Not Use The License Key

I purchased a windows 7 home premium retail 3 license family pack. I used 1 license on my laptop
I used 1 license on my wifes laptop. I used 1 license on my tablet pc. My wife has replaced her laptop with a new one with windows 7 pre installed. Before disposing of her old laptop i restored the original xp thus freeing 1 license. I have disposed of my tablet pc. Before doing so i restored the original xp thus freeing a second license. Therefore i should now have 2 licenses available.

I have now bought a netbook and installed windows 7 home premium on it but when i tried to activate it i received a message that i could not use the license key. I have tried automatic activation by phone several times, without success and cannot find a real person to talk to - i wasn't even given the option. I contacted microsoft support and was given this customer support request number # 1132578017 but since then have had no response.

I have tried automatic activation by phone without success and cannot find a real person to talk to. I have also read through dozens of existing answers in this forum. They all say the same thing - use phone activation. It doesn't work. How do i recover the use of the 2, now unused, licenses.

Swap License Between Computers

I purchased and installed w7 home premium upgrade to my desktop and w7pro upgrade to my laptop. Later, i decided to reinforce my desktop hardware and make it a more powerful environment, so also decided to switch and install the w7pro on it with the intent to take the laptop down to home premium. Windows allowed for the pro upgrade on my desktop during activation but it is not allowing me to use the home premium key on the laptop. In the case of the desktop i used the anytime upgrade option while on the laptop i reloaded clean install from home premium disk to ensure it removes any pro settings.

Any ideas?
