Upgrading Ram - Which Type Of Ram I Would Need?

Currently i have a windows vista 32 bit, and am going to go to windows 7 64 bit. I only have 2 gigs of ram right now but i want to upgrade to 4 gigs.

Current specs:
Intel core2 duo t9300 2. 5ghz
2. 00gb ram
Windows vista 32 bit

1- i was wondering how to find out which type of ram i would need. (Btw, this is a laptop)

2- is there anywhere that can give instructions for self installation (i heard it was easy to do myself), or if its even wise to do it myself.

3- would it would benefit me to install the ram before or after i did a clean install for windows 7

Ps- any reliable companies that you would suggest that make ram.

Upgrading Ram

Why on earth is sdram more expensive than ddram? I thought that since it's an older version of ram it'd be cheaper. Well anyway, i'm trying to upgrade someone's pc and they are currently using sdram (sdr 133) on their computer - problem being the 2 ram cards aren't even the same size or brand - they do not wish to spend a lot of money, but want more memory on their pc for when they upgrade to windows 7 home premium. I know you're supposed to look at the motherboard to see what ram is compatible with it, but what am i looking for? Please, any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Ram Configuration

I have an intel desktop board g33fb that supports :

Four 240-pin ddr2 sdram dual inline memory module (dimm) sockets
Channel a slot 0 and slot 1
Channel b slot 0 and slot 1
Support for ddr2 800 mhz, or ddr2 667 mhz dimms
Support for up to 8 gb£ of system memory

Here's the motherboard link :
http://www.Intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/dg33fb/dg33fb-overview.htm
I have two 2 gb ram sticks
Transcend 2 gb ddr2 667 mhz
Kingston 2 gb ddr2 800 mhz

I have plugged the 667mhz ram stick on channel a slot 0 and 800mhz ram stick on channel b slot 1. Would it make a difference in the performance of the computer if i use 2 ram sticks on different channels or shall i get ram sticks with similar speed.

Ram Problem With Xp Vs 7

I have an older computer that has been running windows xp for a long time. It was custom build has an old fic k8-800t motherboard with amd anthlon 64 process and 3 ram slots equaling 2 gigs (1=1g and 2=512mb).

Upon trying windows 7 i could not get anything to install. I tried all different combination of my ram and also did a memtest that gave em no errors. Finally i got windows to install with just 1 of the 512's. Now that its installed if i put in anything other than 1 512 it will boot then freeze soon after. Aka i can't put the 1 gig or 2 of the 512's or all three. My question is i know alot of people would tell me its a ram problem and to get knew ram but i did mem test and found no errors and as of last night windows xp was running fine. So i'm a little confused on why its knit picking the ram so awkwardly.

Using 5 Gb Of Ram Idle

When i first start windows 7 it normally uses about 1 gb of ram idle. After having my computer turned on for an hour or so, the ram usage creeps up to 5 gb idle. The ram usage of the processes in my process list is only around 150 mb. If i reboot its back to 1 gb, but it slowly creeps back up to 5 gb. What gives?

I thought i would try to re-install windows 7 as a possible solution, but i put my windows 7 dvd in and my computer only shows a readme.txt file on the disk which states something about a udf error.

2.7 Out Of 3.00 Installed Ram Usable

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 32-bit and have 3 gb of ram installed in my computer. 32-bit editions of windows are supposed to be able to use up to 3. 2 gb of ram or something like that. However, when i look at a detailed performance report, it says that only 2. 70 gb of my 3. 00 gb installed ram is usable. Why is this?

Win 7 64-bit Ram Is Gone

Upgraded from windows vista 32 bit version to windows 7 64 bit version, hoping for the improved performance by being able to use all my ram in the 64 bit version, my 4 gigs of ram previously being limited to 3. 3 due to the inherent nature of 32 bit os's. I formatted the system drive as directed so i could put in a fresh 64 bit install on the system. After all was up and set, i hit the desktop and checked my ram, it was reading 2 gigs.

Upon further investigation it is now showing 2 gigs of ram in bios as well, but here's the sticker. It's detecting both dimm 2 gig sticks, just only half of each stick! Did windows 7 quietly flash my bios? I can't fix this issue no matter what settings i try, and post is quite insistent i only have 2 gigs now. I tried changing each stick individually and with each one only in the system, both each read 1 gig alone, they were 2 gig sticks before windows 7!

Motherboard: evga nforce 780 sli
Ram: 2 gig  patriot dimm 800hrz ramx2

4gb Ram But Only 3.3 Gb Is Usable

Im using windows 7 enterprise 64 bits on my hp nw8440(chipset 7600) laptop and have updated the system by connecting to microsoft and it is a genuine copy too. I had earlier one stick 2gb memory and recently inserted another 2gb stick on my second slot. It is working fine on microsoft vista and shows that my entire 4gb is utilized by the system.

But after i upgraded my system to windows 7, it shows that my system has 4gb ram but only 3. 37gb is usable and the rest 641mb is reserved by some hardware. I checked my graphics too and it has its own memory so in no ways it is using the system memory. May i please know the work around for this problem.

Win 7 Stealing My Ram

I got windows 7 professional 64 bit addition for my school computer through msdnaa (school software alliance thingy) and installed it dual boot with xp 64(just in case i did not like 7). Well a few hours into to running with windows 7 i see it maxed out my suppose to be 3 gb of ram at 2 gb. I load resource monitor and it shows that i have 3072mb installed memory, but 2046 total and the other  1026 mb of it is "hardware reserved". So my question is how to get this hardware reserved memory back to normal memory?

Installed Vs Usable Ram

I had a quick look at some other threads which talks about usable ram being shown less than installed ram. Mine is also same case. In my case, my windows 7 x64 ultimate box shows: installed memory (ram): 4. 00 gb (3. 75 gb usable). I understand that . 25 is gone, due to other devices/motherboard etc. Now my question to experts: considering that there are no hardware changes and if i add 4gb more ram (making total 8gb of physical ram), then what will be the value of my usable ram?

Hi mi problem is that i have 2 memories of 2gd ddr2 from 2 diferent brands and windows send me a message of error saying my acpi configuration bios is not compatible with windows in a blue screen or something like that, i read in a forum that maybe it was caused due to the difference between speed memory but the 2 of them have 800mhz whatever i put away one of them and windows work, but now i only have 2gb of ram so if there a fix for windows or i should update my bios or buy a new one with the same brand that the one i use right now?

Ram Works On Xp But Not On Win 7

I've recently upgraded to windows 7 from windows xp, upon trying to install windows 7 i frequently kept getting bsods so i took all but one piece of ram out figuring that would be the likely problem (as this has happened in the past with windows 7 installations i have done) sure enough windows 7 then installed perfectly. However, all of my ram doesn't work with windows 7, apart from one 1gb stick, all the other sticks cause my pc to bsod. I find it hard to believe that all of my pieces of ram are faulty, so i'm left wondering on what it is that's not letting my ram work. As i said, this ram worked fine with windows xp, but just not windows 7 (or windows vista)

Bsod When More Than 2gb Of Ram Installed

Customer brought in a toshiba portege m800 laptop. Problem it is having is that on a clean install of windows 7 pro 64bit, it will bsod with 0x7e, 0x0a, or 0x1e when there is more than 2gb of memory installed. It boots perfectly fine with 2gb or less.

Motherboard, processor, hard drive, and memory have been replaced. I've tried using different brands of memory, different speeds all with the same problem. All memory that has been used has passed every test thrown at it. The bios reports the correct amount of memory installed no matter how much is installed. The computer can handle up to 8gb of memory.

I know vista had a similar problem, but i was not able to find a hotfix for windows 7 and of course the vista hotfix will not install on 7. Any ideas on solving this problem?

4gb Ram But Only 3gb Is Usable

I have installed windows 7 ultimate x64. In system properties, windows tells me i have 4gb ram but only 3gb is usable, displayed in the following format:

Installed memory (ram): 4. 00 gb (3. 00 gb usable)
But when i goto bios it shows: installed memory: 4096mb

My mainboard is of phoenix (quanta 30bc and my bios version is f. 2d released by hp) i have dedicated 128mb graphics card. On 64 bit version of windows i should be able to use my entire 4gb of ram why is it showing only 3gb as usable?

Win 7 X64 Losing Ram

Ok, i have searched around and answers forum and haven't anything that answers my question. I just did a fresh install of windows 7 x64 and had 4. 00 gb of ram usable. After installing all my usual program like anti-virus and music players and run windows update once. After like 3 or 4 reboots, windows reports that it now has 2. 99 gb usable memory. I checked the forums and went into the bios and its seeing all 4096 mb there and memory remapping feature was already enabled. But when i turn it off, i gain 3. 2 gb usable. I just don't know where the other gb or so of ram disappeared to in the last couple of hours. Will someone help me?

Ram Required To Run Win 7

We are interested in purchasing a netbook and most are with either xp or windows 7 starter. We aren't keen on either os and would prefer to upgrade to windows 7 home, but being that most netbooks are 1gb ram. What are your thoughts? Not enough ram to run and adequately support it? Ideally, if we can get away with not upgrading the ram, we would prefer that, as we are looking at an extra cost of $100 to do that. We have been told a few times from salespeople that they would not recommend to have windows 7 run on 1gb ram. Please help as we are getting different information.

Readyboost And Usb Ram Devices

Is there a usb ram device compatible with readyboost that would plug into usb and allow normal volatile/dynamic memory modules to be used rather than flash devices? Seems like this would be the next logical step to dramatically boosting the throughput. Sort of a usbramdrive. This could be very useful for corporate it support bumping up against maximum ram limitation and looking for ways to boost memory without replacing large numbers of systems. A usb ram disk would be a quick pluggable solution and maybe even a way to recycle older memory into a useful application.

Ram Stick Error - Bsods

I built myself a computer about 2 months ago and it has worked perfectly up until 2 days ago! A bsod appeared with the reason being "irlq_. " So i restarted the machine. Worked fine for another little while. Then another bsod but this time with the description "memory_management". Same thing again. Restarted. Then like 30 seconds after windows booting another bsod. But this time saying "atimdag.sys" so it restarted again. This time it freezes and the screen just turns into a load of white lines!

So anyway. Took the cables and components out and reseated everything but the same thing happens! Have deleted the partition and formatted it then reinstalled the os (windows 7 rc) about 3 times now. Still having the same problem!

Have updated the drivers and flashed the bios with the latest release. Still nothing!

The funny thing is when i take out one of the 2gb sticks. It works perfectly fine! I have run memtest and windows diagnostics on both sticks on there own. And together. In every slot config you can think of! When i first ran the tests, it did freeze on me a couple times. So not sure if it found an error or not. However have run the tests many times since on both and on there own and different configs. And no errors were found!

What is annoying however is that it was working for like 2 months before this? It was just a blank machine. I had not installed anything new. Not changed/updated anything. Nothing was different! I am getting so annoyed with myself and the machine.

Ram Failed After Upgrade To Win7

Ram upgrade problems, i have a 32-bit computer running windows 7 and i used to run windows vista with a 2 gb ram and it worked fine. However, once i installed windows 7, i was forced to remove one gb of ram to complete the installation and so i did. But then later i put the gb of ram back in and booted up my computer only to be greeted by a blank black screen. I removed that gb and rebooted my computer and it worked just fine. Anybody know how to fix this problem? It's really annoying running on only 1 gb of ram for it is very slow.

Win 7 Crashes After Installing More Ram

I bought new ram (4gb) for my system, but as soon as i install it, i get a rash of bluescreen crashes and total shutdowns.

It is the correct type of memory (ddr2), my motherboard can handle up to 16gb (asus p5q se2), and i'm running 64-bit win 7, so i should be able to use past 2gb of ram.

"My computer" shows that the system now has 4gb of ram, as does the bios list, so the sticks must not be faulty.

To make it even more confusing, i can work in safe mode (which is how i'm posting this). I am completely stumped.

Windows Wont Load All Of Ram

I was having trouble with my bios where i would have to try and boot 2 times to load. The screen would be blank, no signal, and the computer would only run its fans and lights as fast as it could. After the computer finally loaded, it ran perfectly!

I tried updating my bios to the latest version, and clearing the cmos. This worked to let me boot everytime but my windows 7 will crash on repair or normal start everytime, when i have more than 1gig of ram. I remember having this trouble with windows vista and their was a fix (probably a patch) but does not work for windows 7. Any ideas? I also tried updating my mb drivers but if you have any ideas on that it would be helpful. When i booted twice all of my system was working with out crashes and this went on for about a month.

Windows 7 x64
Q6600 (no clocked)
X2 nvidia gts 8800 512 (no clocked)
Corsair dominator 4x1gig
Asus striker extreme
-Bios 1901 version

*I know vista needed a patch to work with 4gb. Is windows 7 similar?  I have tried to update.

4gb Of Ram Causes Computer To Crash

When i try to use 4gb of ram in my computer, it crashes, either it will crash then load up fine the 2nd time around or it will crash constantly and give me a bsod. The motherboard should be able to handle up to 8gb of ram so i don't get why this is happening. It's an asrock n68-gs motherboard, with a 1. 5 tb hard drive, windows 7.

Not Showing All Ram In Win 7 32-bit

I have just built from the ground up a new system with 4 gb ram. I have installed win 7 32 bit. The bios shows 4g, but windows only recognizes 2. 4 gb. I have verified the following (stolen from other forums): bios. You can check with your bios manufacturer, about how to enable the maximum memory.

Check the advanced boot options.
1. Go to start, in the search bar type msconfig and press enter.
2.system configuration window will open on the screen.
3. Click on tab named "boot".
4. Click on "advanced options" and uncheck the box for "maximum memory".

I have verified the max memory is unchecked, and found it unchecked.

For the record, i have the following hardware:
Msi nf980-g65 mobo
4gb ocz ddr3 pc1600 (2x2g)
2 nvidia 7800 gt (256 mb) in sli

Cpu And Ram Memory Very Slow

I am running win 7 ultimate 32bit on a dell xps m1730 (t7700 @2. 4), 4gb ram, nvidia 8700m sli, ageia physx, raido 0 (2x160gb 7200rpm) and i first notice the problems when playing high res video (mkv, hd-dvd), the computer couuld not handle it. I then proceeded with a windows experience index and got very different results from when i was running windows 7 rc 32bit, these were my results:

Cpu 2. 2  (win7 rc score 5. 4)
Ram 2. 8 (win 7 rc score 4. 8)
Graphics and hard drive remained the same (5. 9-6. 9)

I have checked bios settings for intel speedstep (enabled)
Checked cpu speed, was then running at 2. 25ghz (no progs running)
Checked power settings (all on high perormance)
Re-installed win 7 ultimate (on formated drive)
Installed all original driver in recommneded order
Have no error messages in device manager
Have 0-4% cpu load when idle

I am completely stuck now so if anyone got this problem or can think of something that i could check it will save me from reinstalling vista!

Xp Mode Installed With Little Ram By Default

Installed xp mode and virtual pc and it works, but it created 512 mb of memory by default and it refuses to allow me to close it as it always goes into hibernation even if closed as per instructions. The memory amount can't be changed while it is in hibernation. I've tried over and over to fully close it. I have no data in itthat i care about. I want to reinstall it and give it 3to4gb of ram as i have 16gb on the computer. The current512mb is so small that i can't add graphics to the msword docs. Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall the xp mode?

Hard Faults With Unused Ram Available

Why so many hard faults with unused ram available? In windows 7 resource monitor, i noticed the hard faults/sec went up to 30 or 40 for some processes despite there being nearly 3gb of available ram. The process most guilty of this was svchost.exe 30-40 hf/sec was only seen during bootup, although i see an occasional bump in the hard faults/sec chart in idle (always much less than 1 vertical division, where 1 div = 10 faults/sec). I understand the concept of memory paging so its a bit mysterious why the os forces hdd access instead of using more of the available ram. Does the os put a per-process limit on the ram it will hand out? Can i (. And should i) modify the os's activity by changing the size of the page/swap file?
