Clean Install With Upgrade Media - Activation Code Wont Work

Im a student in the pitt system. We were issued a copy of windows 7 ultimate upgrade version. I have a laptop with vista on it and would be happy to keep it on there. I recently built a new computer from scratch and would like to put my copy on windows 7 on there.

Everything worked up until i got to the activation code since it was as fresh of an install as it could be. The activation code wont work though. Being a college student, i don't have enough money to buy even an old copy to install so i can upgrade to windows 7. Are there any very low cost (under $30) options in order to have my windows 7 work?

Clean Install With Upgrade Media

Well my computer had rescue discs but since they were proven to be functionally useless i was stuck with a very buggy system after a recently (read: yesterday) reformat/reinstall. Well, things have been screwed up to the point where i need to start fresh. I purchased win7 pro x86 and have that installed currently. My comp shipped with vista and that is what is contained (somewhere i'm sure) within my useless rescue discs. My question is if i could perform a clean install over my existing win7 install w/o any problems using my upgrade disc. Please help; i am tired and fed up and could really use a hand.

How To Clean Install With Upgrade Media?

I had a virus and my windows vista (64 bit) system crashed and would not re-boot. First, i tried to restore the system to the dell factory setting (like new) but it still will not start. Then, on a different machine, i downloaded "darik's boot and nuke" to cd. I plan to nuke my system and then upgrade to windows 7. How do i validate that i have a license for this computer, allowing me to use the upgrade w7 disc? Ps  it is a dell machine that came with vista 64 bit pre-installed.

Cannot Clean Install With Upgrade Media

I recently reformatted my hard drive because of multiple errors and the like piling up on my system. After installing windows again and installing my applications, i remembered i skipped registration during the setup process, so i went to activate my key, and i got this error:
The following failure occured while trying to use the product key:

Code:
0xc004f061

Description: the software licensing service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations. This is very bad for me, because i got my copy of windows with the student discount via download, and unless there is a workaround or microsoft would kindly reinstate my product key, then i will have no pc. My pc will expire in 27 days, please help microsoft.

Upgrade As Clean Install Using Upgrade Media Using One Hard Drive

I need help with planning my upgrade to windows 7 from windows xp pro. Can i do this upgrade as a clean install using upgrade media if i've only got one hard drive? I'm currently running 32-bit windows xp professional and want to upgrade to 64-bit windows 7 professional.

My laptop only has one hard drive on it, so installing "fresh" to a separate hd isn't possible. Since i already back up all my data to an external hd, i'd like to just format the internal hd and install windows 7 onto that. Will that be possible though using upgrade media? How does it verify my existing xp pro license?

Changing Activation Key - Clean Install On Dell

I want to install a 40 gb intel ssd, but windows came preinstalled on my computer from dell. I recently contacted dell and they told me that no recovery media was available for windows 7 (dubious, i know), and that they could not help me. I have a copy of win 7 professional through the msdn academic alliance, i upgraded it to ultimate and therefore would prefer not to lose it. Therefore, i was wondering 2 things:1. If i install from the win 7 professional addition cd, but changed my activation key to the win 7 ultimate key, would i run into any problems?2. And if i did this, would upgrade the additional features included in ultimate edition (i suspect yes, but i'd like a confirmation)?

Activation Code / Key Wont Work

When windows 7 was released, i purchased the package that included three windows 7 home premium licenses. I used two of them awhile back on our main computer and my laptop, and just recently inherited another computer. When i installed windows 7 on that computer, it kept telling me the key was not valid. I skipped the step, intending to contact support, but forgot about it. Now i'm getting all of the warning signs saying that my activation period has expired and i need to activate it. I'm not sure what happens if i never activate it. But i really want to.

Is there anything i can do if it continues to tell me the code is wrong despite the fact i've only used 2 of the 3 licenses?

Upgrade Or Clean Install

I have a dell studio one 1909 that is being serviced soon because the motherboard went out.
I ordered and received the window 7 upgrade packet from dell several months ago but was too chicken to complete the upgrade from the horror stories i have read. Would now be a good time to do this upgrade?  Would a "clean install" be better? Can i still do the upgrade or install of windows 7 even after the january 2010 free upgrade program deadline? Will i have any problems registering or activating window 7 now?

Can An Upgrade Be A Clean Install?

A friend of mine is getting a free upgrade to windows 7 home premium, as he bought a laptop right before windows 7 was released. Yes, it really is taking this long for people to get their upgrade discs through arvato. His question to me, and which i'm posing here because i have no personal experience, is whether the windows 7 upgrade disc can be installed as a clean install. I have advised him to do a clean install if at all possible, because of the many problems we've heard from people who have done in-place upgrades from vista. It's just that neither of us is sure of the mechanics of how to do that (or whether it's possible).

Key Was For Upgrade And Not For Clean Install

When i purchased windows 7 online from the ultimate steal, it wasn't clear that it was an upgrade until it was too late and i'd already paid for it. Since it was intended for my brand new tower i have no previous operating system to upgrade from. I managed to do a fresh install regardless from a bootable disk. When i went online to enter the product key, it told me it was for the upgrade and not a clean install. I have 27 days to enter a product key. The reason i got it online was because of the offer for students. Being a student i can't afford to pay for a whole new operating system again and was wondering what i could do to avoid this?

Student Upgrade Version Cannot Be Used For A Clean Install

I bought windows 7 student upgrade back in i believe it was december, i kept the bootable jumpdrive i made from it and the registration key. The hard drive i installed it on failed recently, so i went out and bought 2 new ones, set it up in raid, and reinstalled windows 7 as well as transferred over some of the files i keep backed up and installed all the programs i lost. Bout a week later i realized i never activated it, and upon doing so received the error that the student upgrade version cannot be used for a clean install.

Now i am fairly sure i can find the original windows discs and registration numbers, however do i need to uninstall windows 7, install the old windows, just to reinstall windows 7 and all of the programs again? (Took me an entire weekend so i think you could see why i don't wish to do this) or is there a way of showing that i have a previous version without needing to go through the hoops of uninstalling everything.

Upgrade Vs Clean Install Key Fix

I have a feeling this is just a rant that will fall on deaf ears, but i would hope that someone at microsoft sees this and realizes that windows 7 has not made things simpler. Just about every version of windows since 95 has allowed upgrades. Those discs would require the presence of a previous version before installing, or if installing a fresh version, would simply ask for a key or previous install disk.

I just spent the better part of a day wasting my time to install a fresh copy of 7 that i now can't legitimately activate because my copy is 'upgrade' despite the fact that i own windows vista. This is ridiculous. Is there anything i can do to get my install to ask for my underlying key? Maybe it's time to cut the cord and go to linux, or perhaps just switch to mac. At least they have a straight forward licensing policy that won't leave me hanging.

Upgrade Disc Clean Install Problem

I have a computer that came with vista home and upgraded to windows 7. We ran into problems and was advised to do a clean installation. I did the clean install on a new hdd and cannot use the upgrade activation key code. Now what? I've already transfered all the data and cannot easily wipe the drive and reinstall vista to to do the upgrade. I have all the activation numbers from both vista and windows 7, can't i just talk to someone to get the correct activation numbers for this situation?

Upgrade Product Key With Clean Install

I removed my previous post because i thought i had solved the problem, but i was incorrect. To make a long story short, i have a laptop that came pre-installed with windows 7 starter edition. It was not accompanied with a cd or dvd to reinstall windows. I had to reformat the hard drive for unrelated issues, and was stuck without a computer. I had purchased a windows home premium upgrade through the current college student promotion and tried to use that product key, but discovered it would not work for obvious reasons. I'd like to speak to someone about providing both of my keys (the windows 7 starter key on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop and the windows 7 hp upgrade key) to facilitate activation of my install.

Upgrade Or Clean Install Using Oem Disk

I am building pretty much a new system, just for myself. I will have new motherboard, new hard drives, new case, new psu, new video system (going sli). I currently have xp sp3 and i want to go to win 7. I bought an oem copy of win 7, but have not broken the seal, and won't unless i know i can use it. My question is: once all the hardware is together, my assumption is that in my oem package i will find a win 7 dvd from which i can straightforwardly install windows. Can i do this, or should i get a retail version?

Upgrade Product Key Vs Clean Install Issue

Recently i purchased a copy of windows 7 professional and installed it onto a linux/unix system. After the instillation was completed, the product key i received would not work claiming it was an upgrade key. Although having it install on this non-windows computer so well, i can't believe upgrade/clean install are so vastly different that they require different product keys. There are also no options for telephone activation for some reason. Does this mean i'm officially forced to buy a whole new copy of windows 7 just for a product key?

Pre-installed Vista - In-place Upgrade Or Clean Install

I have a laptop, which came pre-installed with windows vista. I'm looking to upgrade this to windows 7, but would like to know one thing before i purchase the upgrade license.

If i was to purchase the upgrade license, would i need to first reinstall windows vista, then do an in-place upgrade to windows 7, or could i do a completely clean install of windows 7 using the vista oem key as proof that the laptop was/still is licensed for windows vista?

I've just read the post at http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7install/thread/6719ae72-7187-45cd-80f7-55e66f3ec686 which seems to suggest initially that you must perform an upgrade, then in the instructions says that you can do a "custom(advanced)" install, which is the normal option to perform a fresh reinstall.

So from this, i gather that i must install windows vista, and activate the license etc, then insert the windows 7 disc, at which point i can either perform an in-place upgrade, or a full clean install?

Upgrade Install Error Code 0xc000005

I want to do a clean install on my computer because the old xp is a mess. I don't want to have to fix it or i'd just take w-7 back to the store. I run the advisor, it says .net 1. 1 isn't compatible with w-7 but doesn't give any suggests of what to do. But i really don't care if its compatible, i want to do a clean install. I ran the install program and now i get this error code: error code 0xc000005 - it says to reboot my computer and make sure the install resources are available. Rebooting does no good. What does this mean?

What do i need to do to fix it? So much for easier, they should have to take the commercials off of tv. I have had all kinds of issues with my xp system with .net files and virus and now this an apple is looking pretty tasty.

Can I Clean Install And Keep Programs?

I currently have vista 32 bit - want to upgrade to windows 7 because of damage that was left behind from a virus - my whole system is screwy. And, yes i have tried everything in the forums trying to fix it. I want to keep my office 2007 ultimate, but do not have a disk - bought it digitally. I have the key though. Is there a way for me to do a clean install of both without having the office disk? Shouldn't i have access to a digital file through my digital locker? It has been several years since i purchased the office ultimate.

Clean Install From Vista To 7

I've upgraded my vista to win7 using the upgrade dvd i've got from hp. Today, i restored it to vista because i was not happy with the performance. I heard that clean install is better than upgrading, so can anyone please tell me if it is possible with just an upgrade dvd of win7? Also, will i be able to have the hp programs after the clean install?

I've also read several threads on errors while installing and product key errors. How likely that this will happen to me? "Windows. Old folder" can i just erase this folder after the installation? Lastly, will i still be able to factory default my os and have it back to vista if i'm still not happy with win7?

Windows.old After Clean Install

I had a pc with a 32 bit version of vista installed. Now the pc had been playing up for a number of weeks (computer not starting up on every occasion, very very slow) and so i decided to bite the bullet and go to windows 7. Received the discs and got round to updating it today - my pc was 64bit ready and so i decided to go to the 64bit version. Therefore after doing some reading i was aware that i would have to do a clean install, something that i (seemingly naively) thought would format my disk and get rid of everything off my computer (something that i had wanted to do anyway, as i had backed up all my important files).

After a little problem running the upgrade, i eventually got to install windows 7 (bypassing the advanced disk options which is where i now think a format option lives), and whilst it is working fine, i was surprised to find a windows. Old file there with a reasonable chunk of my old files.
Now as they were not formatted am i in danger of whatever issues were plaguing my pc being carried over into my new windows 7 era?

So i guess i have two parts to this question:

- Will a non formatted windows. Old file potentially carry with it whatever problems it may have had before? Will these be solved if i just delete this windows. Old file now that they are no longer involved in the os given that windows 7 has been installed ok?

- If the files above could still cause me a problem - can i run the upgrade disc again, or will it now not function correctly given that i have used my upgrade product key, and that vista isn't technically installed on my computer again?

Online Activation Will Not Work

My computer came from best buy ready to go with windows 7 premium installed. I reformatted my hardrive and now am asked to activate windows 7. When i attempt to do this online i receive a message that states that my product key is not valid. I input the key from the label on the bottom of the computer exactly as printed. I tried several times. Each time the same error. I verified the input each time and had it checked by another individual. Each time the same result.

If the product key is not valid why has microsoft and toshiba provided it and it is on my computer?

Install On Clean Hd And Wipe Old Drive

I have 3hd's in my system, one of which is completely empty (in fact not even formated yet). Is it plausible to install windows 7 on my clean hd and have it install without any issues?  I'm so sick of it starting to install on my main c: drive and quitting after 30% complete in the "expanding files". Will i get the same problems installing on a clean drive?  As it stands right now i'm perfectly happy with installing windows 7 on my new drive and completely wiping my old c: drive. I just want to know if i need to do anything funky or if it will go "smoothly".

Raid Drive Read Only After Clean Install

Got a real problem that's doing my head in. It's happened before (on vista) but i can't remember how to fix and can't seem to get an answer through google. Story is i've been using windows 7 from day of release via msdn so i thought it was time for a reinstall and clean things up. So i did. But now i've reinstalled my raid controller (fasttrak tx4310) all my stuff is read only. I can create a folder on th disk and sub folders and i can save new stuff to the drive. But if i open and e.g. A word doc or excel file they show as read only.

I've used up 400gb of a 1. 3tb and can't backup all the files (don't have a spare 500gb drive).
