Backup And Restore

I just upgraded to windows 7 from vista. I had backed up my program files and data on dvd's prior to upgrading to windows 7. Now i want to restore them in windows 7, but i am unclear of the location of where i should be restoring them. If i pick the original location, it tells me that the file already exists in that location, and do i want to replace, copy or keep both copies; if i choose a different location, i have no idea where they should go. Do i make a new folder, or just have them restored in c drive. I am not sure how to proceed. Can anyone explain this for me please?

Backup And Restore - Windows Can't Find Restore Image

I created an image backup with windows 7. It created a large vhd file and appeared to complete correctly. I copied the image to my thumb drive and tried to do a restore. I can find the thumb drive and browse it and all the files are there but if i try to do a restore it doesn't find the restore image. I also tried putting it on a network drive - it can't find it there even though i point it to the share it is in. I've tried using a restore cd, as well as installing windows and using the recovery in control panel.

The folder structure is as follows
Windowsimagebackup\computername
Under that folder are three folders
Backup 2012-07-15 232717
Catalog
Sppmetadatacache
Metadataid

It seems odd there is no obvious way to just say this is the vhd - right here in this folder - use it and restore.

Win 7 Backup And Restore

I do a weekly backup of my system and i may need to do a restore soon due to hardware changes. Now i need to know what is actually backed up. Will my application settings be backed up. I am looking at stuff like outlook profiles address books and email accounts. If they are once i do a fresh install of win7 should i do my restore before or after i install my applications such as office. Also i see a shadow is created what is this?

Why i need to know is if my hardware changes and drivers change and the shadow is the same as an image will it be better not to restore the shadow portion. Just thinking if it is like an image it would then restore all my old drivers for the hardware and i would be back to where i was before the hardware change. I will be changing out mb and cpu so i am sure being different to what i have now i will have some type of issues. "Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul. "

How To Restore A Previous Backup / Image?

Ok so i use some programs that were not compatible with windows 7 that came on my new computer. After upgrading to professional and trying xp mode (too slow) i decided to just downgrade to xp and deal with it. However. I didn't realize that all the drivers for my computer are not compatible with windows xp so nothing works. I need to go back to windows 7. I created a "backup disc" which i assumed would be sufficient if i did need to go back. However, when trying to "restore" it says that windows doesn't recognize the backup files or something like that. I assume because it wasn't out yet. So. With that, no factory discs how can i get 7 back on my computer with out buying something that i already had?

Folder Empty Backup And Restore

After recovering from a boot failure, after downloading a windows malware update, i made a new backup of all my documents using windows backup and restore wizard. Using the start button and then documents i browsed to the external drive holding the backup, found the backup folder, saw the list of document folders that matched the list on my main hard-drive but every folder i tried to open said "folder empty". The backup took 5 hours to complete and i received a screen saying backup successful, but where are the documents that were backed up?

Restore Backup Operation Has Been Stopped

I decided to restore the factory of my asus u30jc laptop but after restoring the last dvd and restarting, the operation has been stopped! It stops on the state in which the word asus is on monitor but doesn't continue! Pressing any key or putting dvd in dvd player, doesn't make any changes on this state! When i put power button it shots down quickly and putting it again make this page displayed. What should i do now? I would add that, before restoring backup, the speaker made some strange noise and when i put my hand on it or around webcam place on top of monitor, it made a voice like screeching.

Backup Restore Error Code - 0x80070424

Windows 7, backup & restore, error code 0x80070424. Can not backup or anything else in windows 7 after doing a disk check or de-fragmenting my hard drive. If i don't do the disk check or de-fragment my hard drive it work fine, but as soon as i do  these tasks, the program give me an error code of 0x80070424 every time, and i have tried every fix that they had on the answer site. The only thing up to now that work was until i of course do a disk check or de-fragmenting was to use advance restore.

Either using the system imagne or a full restore using the windows 7 disk, but it doesn't last, and it give a error code no matter what if it backup, creating system imagine, changing setting or manage space. It give and error code of 0x80070424 sometimes it will also give 696, 693, 0x80070057, 0x8007002, 0x80070017. And my restore never works it says could not make changes to files no change were made to your computer, but beside that it works great. Just can't do any  disk check or defragment the hard drive. How long do you think that will last ?

Backup And Restore Vs External Hard Drive

I have upgraded from vista ultimate to 7. I also needed to change out my 150gb hdd for a 500gb hdd. I thought the cool thing to do would be to install 7 and all my softwareon the old drive, make a backup/image of that drive onto a spare external drive, install the new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

My plan worked to perfection with one fatal flaw. The image only created 150gb of usable space on my 500gb hdd. So i reinstalled the original 150gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd into an external drive box with usb connection. The computer immediately recognized the 500gb hdd but when i look for it on computer, it won't show up.

Neither will my other external hdd's. I have tried on different usb ports and usb cables and the device manager says that all usb devices are operational. Dell precision m4300, 4gb memory, 2. 50 gh, t9300 core 2 duo 32 bit system. Extra credit: can anyone tell me why the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon won't work? Double clicking and right mouse click have no affect.

Backup / Restore Fails When Changing Password

I'm on an active directory domain using windows 7 enterprise, fully patched. I've configured windows backup and restore to use a network location to write backups to. The permissions on the network location are controlled by my active directory account, which has full control access. I changed my active directory credentials recently and now, windows backup won't backup to the network location anymore, stating that my credentials have expired.

Error code is 0x8007052e. Alas, i cannot find the option to change the used credentials for the network location added to the backup destinations. How can i change the credentials and why isn't windows backup fully ad integrated?

Backup And Restore Error - The Parameter Is Incorrect - 0x80070057

Configuring backup and restore (executing 'sdclt.exe /configure' as super user) causes error 'the parameter is incorrect' 0x80070057.

Background:  backup and restore was working fine here in windows 7 home premium until i encountered hard disk cabling problems and the backup would just die, or would freeze the machine. Event 129, 'reset to device, deviceraidport1, was issued' was realized in the event viewer. In any event, at some point i removed power from the machine without shutting down windows and that messed something up, i believe in the registry somewhere.

The cabling problems are resolved but now backup and restore "lost" it's configuration and trying to reconfigure (set it up again) causes the 80070057 parameter error when clicking on "save settings and start backup" (after changing source and destination files/drives and resetting my modified us regional settings).

The following were tried to no avail:1. Chkdsk /r on all partitions2. Sfc /scannow3. Clearing the appropriate registry entries in hklm (as documented elsewhere in this forum)4. Running in a clean boot state5. Running in safe mode6. Reading every appropriate forum post in here (some with questions not answered)the only thing i've found to fix it:clean installation of windowsi don't wanna do that if i can help it. Any help?

Backup And Restore Error - The Parameter Is Incorrect (0x80070057)

I have some problems with my backup program (backup and restore of w7). Normally i have scheduled a backup every fryday at 19:00 hours. The backup goes to a nas. Today the nas was offline and i was forgotten to turn it on. I turned it on and it came available as normal. Then i went to the "backup and restore" option of my control panel. There i saw the information that there was no backup done that night (correct) so i pressed the "backup now" button.

Directly the next message appeared: back up or restore your files

(Red cross) an internal error has occurred.
The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057).

There is nothing else i can do anymore with the program. Even restarting my system fails: the same error code is appearing again. Does anyone knows what is the matter here and how to solve this?

Backup And Restore - Win 7 Will Not Load Recovery From Disc

So yesterday i was on the computer and it just quit. Shut down and restarted without warning and flashed a blue screen with a sunshine ray type screen. Then i got a windows error recovery and i choose to start windows normally as this has never happened to me. When i choose that i got a blue screen that a problem was detected quoted stop: 0x0000007e. I managed to get into the advanced boot options but no option would work. It would only just recycle a restart. Then i would get the error in windows boot manager about 0xc0000428. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. I have put in a recovery disc that was made and a genuine windows 7 disc and i get the option to boot from disc but it just takes me to the digital signature error.

I have pulled the hard drive out and put into an external case and hooked up to my laptop. Everything is still on my hard drive. I have ran the smart tests in the bios menu and they all passed. I have taken out the ram and put it back in. I do not get any beep codes or anything. I read on here to try the windows defender offline disc. I burned a disc off my laptop which is just a few weeks old and clean of malware and viruses. When i put disc in all i got was a the blue symbol (4 squares in a square) and it just sits and goes no where. Thinking there might be something wrong with the dvd drive itself i tried an external usb dvd with same results. I even made a copy on a flash drive with the same results except shortly after loading i now get an all blue screen that says recovery your pc needs to be repaired. An unexpected error has occured. Error code 0xc0000229 and so on with the f8 for startup settings or enter to try again. Well nothing happens when i choose f8 or press enter. I have to restart the system with a hard reboot to get anything to happen again.

I have also went into the bios and reloaded defaults. Not sure what else to do. I am not 100% tech savvy but i would say i have about 75% knowledge on the systems. Any help and guidance would be much appreciated. I have searched out the problem but cannot find anything else that repeats my problem. A lot of people are able to load from a disc but i cannot. Hp pavillion p6000 series, windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Restore Windows Using Backup After Completely Reformat Hard Drive

If i back up the system, then completely wipe and reformat the hard drive, will i be able to somehow restore windows using the backup, with all the software intact (aka subscriptions etc. ). Also how do i restore if the memory is 100% wiped clean? Basically i have an acer laptop with a stupid unaccessible hard-drive partition with the vista acer backup on it.

I am currently running the w7 rc and am about to upgrade to w7, there is also a vista dual-boot i will erase at the same time. I have mcafee and powerdvd subscriptions on the rc. Now when i upgrade the rc to w7 directly these subscriptions will carry over, and that's wonderful, however i still have the stupid partition problem wasting hdd space. As i understand the only way to get rid of it is a full hdd reformat, which wipes the memory. My plan is to backup the new w7 account to an external hdd, thats a ful backup of everything, perform the reformat, and somehow get the backup back onto the hdd. Only there's no windows software to run the recovery.

So, my question's are:
How do i get the backup onto the computer after the wipe, considering there is no software to read it (would i need to get microsoft to re-activate the product key)?
If i can somehow get all this done will the subscriptions still work?
Quite simply - is there an easier way of sorting all this out?

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Dell Pc Restore

I have a dell inspiron 545mt and i would like to perform a dell pc restore, i followed all instructions. I pressed f8 and entered the advanced boot menu. In the advanced boot menu, i saw repair your computer. I pressed enter on my keyboard, the recovery option menu did not appear, instead windows loaded normal. I am sure that i still have the dell recovery partition because i never reinstalled windows or formatted the hard-drive. An experiment, i did is clicked on computer, system properties and then system protection and i saw o. S and recovery so i highly believe that the recovery partition is still there. I running a windows 7 home premium 64bit english, 3gb ram.

Restore And Update

When you use window restore and restore your pc back to an earlier date. Windows update (i have it set to download but let me decide what updates to install) will re-offer updates that were installed after the date of your restore point. You can see these updates in windows hostory.

Are these window updates being offered because they are no longer installed even though they are shown in history and you should click install, or, are they still installed even though the restore point is before they were offered, and not deleted when restoring to an earlier date and if you select install you are merely over-writing the same update?

Image Restore

I upgraded my hdd from 60gb to 320gb. With the extra room i thought that i would dual boot ubuntu. After days of not getting it to work, i decided to just restore from my backup image, and use only windows. However, to my dismay, when i went to restore from the image, it saw the image and gave some error saying that the image was not found at the location. So, being one to tinker, i moved the folder to another directory, and made an empty folder called windowsimagebackup. Of course windows still couldn't find an image, so i moved everything back. However, now windows saw no image even though it was there.

Anyway, now i'm stuck with the image (a collection of .zip files) and seemingly now way to restore it (also, the mediaid. Bin file was accidentally replaced with an older one [oops. ]). Is there a way to manually restore from the zip files? All the data is there, so it seems there should be a way. If i don't get everything back, then i'll lose ms office 2007, which is my main concern. I no longer have the disk or code for it.

System Restore

My current pc came with vista preloaded. I did not receive a cd disk with it. Rather the manufacture had set up a recovery partition for me to restore the system. In addition, vista also gave me the option to make recovery disks which i did. If i upgrade to windows 7 and do a clean install will it give me that same one time option to create the recovery disk for my computer?

Also, when i do install windows 7 will it give me the option to wipe my whole hard drive including the old recovery partition and allow me to create a new recovery partition? I realize that it is the manufacturer that has set up the recovery partition, and i have never had to do it for myself before, so i was wondering if that is some kind of option with windows 7 or if i am on my own to create a new one?

Need To Restore System

I just finished restoring my system for the 10th time in the three months that i have owned this new windows 7 computer. For at least 10 times when i have been advised that the windows 7 operating system has been updated i am not able to get on the internet with the use of internet explorer. After restoring the system to a time before the most recent update i am once again able to get on the internet. Does anyone have any idea on how to stop the need for restoration after an update?

Why No System Restore?

A registry defragmentor program caused my sysem to not be able to boot. The system could not repair itself either. I also tried last known good configuration without results. I tried to do a system restore and had a number of restore points to choose from, but every one i chose gave me an exclamation mark and i could not put a check mark in the c windows box.

I was able to get my system back using another backup routine (image) i was using, but this backup was 3. 5 weeks old and i had 3 restore points for 3 days ago. So what might i do to get this working  in case a similar event happens and my system is unrepairable via the repair tool presented. Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Restore Problems

I have a problem that seems to be preventing me from restoring a disk image that i made with the windows 7 rc before installing windows 7 ultimate that i purchased. I made a backup of my files and such using windows backup and restore centre with the rc version of 7. However, since upgrading to the retail version of 7 ultimate, i can not restore any of the files made in the backup.

When i go to to select the restore image, i get the following error message:

There is a problem with the backup catlog. Restore from a different backup or create new, full backup (0x810000e3) verify that this location is valid and try again, or consider choosing a different backup. " Anyone any ideas as to why this is not working.

System Restore Does Not Work

I recently had big problems with my dell inspiron 530 and it would not reboot. I finally got to the part of the safe mode where you can do system restore. I tried the 1st restore point and thought everything would work but all of a sudden i get a message that says system restore did not complete because of an error. I tried 2 more restore points and got the same message. Some way the system recovered and booted up the normal way when i started it normally. I would like to know why system restore would not work. Does the antivirus program need to be off or uninstalled? Does windows defender have something to do with this?
