Hard Drive Failed After Win7 Upgrade - Can I Install Win7 On New Hdd ?

Vista preloaded hard drive failed after windows 7 upgrade. Can i install windows 7 upgrade again on brand new hard drive? I just recently purchased windows 7 upgrade on microsoft online store and created a disk with . Iso file. I went ahead and installed it on my vista-preloaded hard drive that came with my pc back then. It worked fine but it was my hard drive that was faulty and now i need to purchase a new hard drive. Can i still install the same windows 7 upgrade on my new hard drive and still be able to register it genuine?

Failed Hard Drive After Win7 Upgrade

I recently upgraded my pc from vista to 7 home premium. A week later my hard drive had a mechanical failure and is now beyond repair. Luckily i backed up all of my data to an external drive for security before upgrading so i have all of my files. I have a replacement blank hard drive but i want to know if i can install windows 7 having already activated the product on the old drive. Also, will i have a problem with the fact that there is no previous version of windows on my blank drive? Can i use my upgrade disk to do a full install on a new drive?

Upgrade On New Hard Drive Because Of Failed Hard Drive

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Upgrade As Clean Install Using Upgrade Media Using One Hard Drive

I need help with planning my upgrade to windows 7 from windows xp pro. Can i do this upgrade as a clean install using upgrade media if i've only got one hard drive? I'm currently running 32-bit windows xp professional and want to upgrade to 64-bit windows 7 professional.

My laptop only has one hard drive on it, so installing "fresh" to a separate hd isn't possible. Since i already back up all my data to an external hd, i'd like to just format the internal hd and install windows 7 onto that. Will that be possible though using upgrade media? How does it verify my existing xp pro license?

Win 7 Upgrade Install On New Hard Drive

I upgraded from vista ultimate to windows 7 home premium last year (download w/ backup dvd). My hard drive crashed a month ago and without thinking, i did a clean install of windows 7 on the new hard drive. Of course it wouldn't let me activate it since my product key is for upgrade only. So i reinstalled vista and tried to use my windows 7 install disc to upgrade. I keep getting a message that says i cant upgrade from vista ultimate to 7 home premium and it wants me to do a clean install. If i do this, im afraid it wont take my product key again. What should i do?

Raid Hdd Was Not Assigned Drive Letters After Install

Boot manager installs on wrong hdd and raid hdd's was not assigned drive letters after install. This is first time i installed windows 7 and after updating motherboard bios and mixing the hdd boot order i find out in the end that the files windows require has been installed on my mirror raid instead of the system disk stripe raid. This annoys me a bit, do i have to plug out all my hdd's except the ones i want to install windows 7 on to ensure the booting is independent of other hdd's?

(Another annoyance was that the mirror raid did not show up under my computer, which after installing every driver known to man i found that a drive letter had not been assigned. )

Usb Flash Drive Driver Install Failed / Not Recognized

I plugged in a flash drive to my laptop the other day and i got the plug and play message, it downloaded the driver but the installation failed. Now windows 7 will not even recognize that the flash drive is plugged in or try to install the driver again. The flash drive still works on my main computer just fine and other usb devices including other flash drivers work just fine on this laptop. Device manager and computer management under administrative tools do not register it as being plugged in either.

I could not find a way to check if maybe the driver did install and was corrupted. Is there anything i can do?

How To Upgrade Hard Drive At Same Time I Upgrade To Win 7?

How should i upgrade my hard drive at the same time i upgrade to windows 7? I plan to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro to win 7 pro and want to at the same time upgrade my hard drive. I don't know what i should do to ensure that the win 7 install program recognizes the prior win xp installation.
Would it work to put the old (win xp) drive in an external enclosure connected via usb? Alternatively, what would i need to copy from the old hard drive to the new in order to have the win 7 install recognizes win xp?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Install From One Hard Drive To Another

So what i want to do is fairly simple sounding, but i don't know how to accomplish it. I have the digital download version of windows 7 that was offered through the college student promotional pre-order deal. The specific file name is "win7-p-retail-en-us-x86.exe". I have another hard drive, it's twice as large as this one, and it's formatted clean, nothing on it. What i want to do is have both drives plugged into my pc, and install it from my current drive onto the new one.

Install Win 7 From Hard Drive

Is it possible to bypass the cd/dvd drivers by copying the windows 7 installation files to a hard drive and install windows 7 from the hard drive. My installation hangs at the infamous 21% and there is some chatter that it might be caused by the failure to transfer files from the cd/dvd to the hard drive. If so it could be a driver problem.

Can't Install 7 On A New Hard Drive

In november, i built a new pc & installed 32 bit windows 7 home premium on it. The install went perfectly. I thought i'd try the 64 bit version, so i bought a new 250g hard drive. I unplugged the original hard drive, put in the new one, inserted the 64 bit dvd & booted the computer. It goes through installing temporary files, i get the black screen with the windows logo, then the blue screen with the dove on it and a mouse pointer. Then, nothing. It just sits there with no activity. I tried the 32 bit dvd as well, & it does the same thing. Any ideas?

Can I Install Win 7 On A New Hard Drive?

My computer won't load up due to a rootkit malware issue that means that the computer just cycles through the start up and gets the blue screen of death after the windows 7 symbol comes up. Loading system repair does nothing and i can't restart in safe mode. My question is that i have 3 hard drives, 2 with files on that i don't want to lose with a clean install and one that has not been used at all on the computer.

If i install the new hard drive into the computer can i clean install windows 7 on to that hard drive by booting it off the windows 7 disc? I presume i will first have to make that hard drive my primary hard drive on the bios. Is this all even possible? I can't get into windows first to make any initial changes.

Help With Hard Drive Upgrade

My hard drive had only 37gb so i upgraded to a 320gb drive. I have cloned the old drive to the new drive. My problem is windows 7 shows the new drive size as 37gb. In the diskmanagementwhere it shows disk 0, disk 1, disk 2 i can see the correct drive size 320gb but the drive properties shows 37gb. When i select the right-mouse "format" menu the "extend volume" menu is grayed out. How can i make windows 7 remeasure the hard drive size so the full 320gb drive is available and the menu format->extend volume will work?

Will Custom Install Format Hard Drive ?

Just need to know if windows 7 "custom" install will reformat my hard drive, or simply install a clean version of windows? I have xp right now and i want to do a clean windows 7 install, but i want to leave my data on the hard drive, like my pictures, mp3's, documents, etc. I don't care if it deletes all my installed programs because i want to re-install my programs anyway. I just want to know if the "custom" install option reformats the entire drive, that's all. Anyone?

Bios Install / Corrupted Hard Drive

I need help. I've been trying both disks to boot from cd-rom. And they are both not reading at all. I have tried disabling caches, and different boot priorities. I cannot go into windows itself because of "blue screen of death".
Although, i can get into command prompt with windows 98 on the other hard-drive.

-Windows xp corrupted(blue screen of death)

-Cd-rom drive does not read windows 7 disk(went through bios)

-Windows 98 command prompt works(but can not boot into safe mode/normal mode due to missing information)

-Tried both 32-bit/64bit windows 7 disks

Can anyone help? Been at this for 2 hours now, and i cannot find anyone with the right information. Im stumped.

Win 7 Install Hard Drive / Cloning

Preparing to clean install win 7 pro upgrade. Will be cloning my existing xp pro installation ( c: ) to my empty d: drive ( formerly w2000 pro installation ) looking to create a dual boot installation of 7. Want to switch drives because existing c: ( xp installation ) is the larger. Faster drive.

My question is if the clone goes successfully. Will i be able to boot to either drive's xp pro installation depending on the first boot drive set up in my bios ?

Is a properly cloned drive basically a perfectly performing copy/clone of the original. ?. Meaning you could disconnect the original c: drive that was cloned. And then boot to the newly created d: drive that is now c:

Then when i install 7 pro. I will be able to setup the dual boot with win 7 the default with my old xp pro as a secondary boot option ?

Do i have this right. ?

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Upgrade To Win7 - Keep Xp Hard Drive As Is

I have xp, want to upgrade to w7. Would like to keep old xp hard drive as is (just in-case upgrade fails). I want to buy a new second hd and 'upgrade to that hd and making xp hard drive a "d:" drive and w7 the "c". I want to keep my xp hard drive as is and use it as a second hard drive. Don't want to have to move everything or do a dual boot.

I would like to buy a new hd, upgrade w7 on it and make it my new c: (boot) drive and make my old xp hd my d: (data)drive. This way, i could switch back to the old xp hd if w7 failed. Is there a way to do this easily or at all? I guess i could buy the new hd install xp on it, then do the w7 upgrade!

Upgrade To A New Empty Hard Drive

I have a pre order of windows 7 professional upgrade coming when released. I am getting my inspiron 8600 ready, 2 gb memory installed, and i have a new 160 gb hard drive to replace the 40 gb original drive. My plan was to install the new drive and install the upgrade using my original xp install disc from dell as a qualifier. It sounds like i cannot do this based on other threads. Can i install the dell original xp on the new hard drive (basic install) and go to the upgrade disk from there? I understand i will have to reinstall software and documents, etc. After.

Dual Boot - Xp And Win7 Install On New Hard Drive

I would like to set up my dell laptop to dual boot to xp and windows 7. I have found several articles that go into details explaining this procedure and it seems things are complicated due to the fact that there is no way to adjust partitions in xp. I also just had to replace my hard drive so i have to do fresh installs of xp and windows 7 on the new hard drive so my question is this:

Can i just create the separate partitions needed when i install xp then install windows 7 on the partition i created in the xp install? I have never set up a dual boot before so i'm a newb in that respect. I have the xp pro re-installation disc as well as the 7 ultimate install dvd (not upgrade). Any feedback or links to useful information would be appreciated.

Family Pack Upgrade Onto A New Hard Drive

Family pack upgrade onto a new hard drive. I have a number of pcs in our house. I bought the 3 install family pack to upgrade a desktop and a laptop. The laptop is a few years old running vista home premium and has a 100 gb hard that is 95% full of data. So while buying the upgrade package i thought i replace the hard drive with something bigger and bought a new internal 320 gb hard drive to replace the existing one, with the intention of reinstalling my programs and the old hd to be wiped and disposed of.

The install of win 7 onto the new hd was straight forward and fast until it rejected the 3 pack licenses code. After going round in circles i turned the laptop of and then restarted - it started up again and i just ignored the product key part and windows has loaded and will now work for 30 days. I tried to activate with the product key but it was also rejected online - saying it was not valid for a fresh install

So its the same laptop, just with a new hd. Previous windows upgrades have just asked for the old version of windows cd/dvd, checked it and allowed the install to complete - and given the lack of info available i was expecting the same again. Any thoughts on what options i have available would be appreciated. If i was to delete and make same space on the old hd, install win 7 on it, can the os be moved onto the new hd?
