Ntfs External Hard Drive Becomes Raw

I've recently had this happen on two hard drives after running backup and/or acronis true image from windows 7 rc. One appears to be totally dead at this point, so we'll just focus on the other one. From windows 7 (rc or rtm) (or vista) it appeared in my computer, but was not accessible and i was invited to format it. Instead, i ran chkdsk /r from a command prompt, which told me the first ntfs boot record was bad so it used the second one and fixed lots of things. But, still not accessible on w7. However, from a windows xp machine it looks just fine.

Is there a way to fix this drive? Would even a reformat fix it?

I am thinking maybe i should always reformat a new external drive from windows 7, even if it is already formatted ntfs. Is there any point to that?

Formatting Usb Flash Drive To Ntfs Causes A Red Bar

Reformatting usb flash drive to ntfs causes a red bar when used with readyboost vs. Blue bar in fat32, and hdd shows blue bar with ntfs. Is this a problem? Reformatting a usb flash drive to ntfs file sys allows full usage of flash drive storage cap. In readyboost but shows as a red bar in my computer while my hdd. Is also in ntfs shows blue. Flash drives formatted in fat32 also show blue. Does the red bar mean that that flash drive isn't compatible? Or is not working in windows7 64 bit?

No Keyboard Message When Booting

Keyboard and mouse are not being detected during boot process. I have searched microsoft, the hardware manufacturer and used blitware's driver fetch to no avail. All sources indicate i have the most current drivers for my hardware. Once the system boots to the window's desktop i can remove the usb connection and upon reinsertion windows sees the device and installs drivers; then the keyboard and mouse work find.

Some Programs Delays Before Booting Up

I have win 7 ultimate, cpu-core duo e6850, 4gb memory, nvdia 8800 gtx graphics card, motherboard evga nforce 680i lt sli. Often i will double click a program, usually internet explorer. The cursor will twirl like it is booting the program for 10 seconds then stop. In 1 to 2 minutes later the program will run. It seems that this does not happen with "portable" programs that don't access the registry. I have had this happen ever since installing win 7. I've scanned for viruses with 3 different programs and am clean. Does anyone know what is going onlso i have set my power saving settings to be always on and to never hibernate.

Trouble Dual Booting Win7 And Xp

Trying to install win xp onto a notebook that already has win 7 installed. I shrunk the partition holding win 7 and created a primary partition on the other. What i did was cut the hd in half and now have two partitions. The second partition is  a health primary partition and is now drive e:. I restart the notebook and with the xp pro disc in the cd drive i boot from it. All of the installation files and drivers load as usual but when it gets to the next part, i get a blue screen and it goes no farther.

I have run every test chkdsk etc. And the drive is fine. I'm starting to get the idea that you cannot install xp on a computer that is already running 7 no matter what you do. I have a multiboot desktop that i built but i installed xp first and then 7 and it works fine but then this was a computer that never had an os  of any kind on it. If anyone can confirm that i can't install xp on this machine unless i start from scratch and reinstall everything i would appreciate it, if there is a work around please let me know.

Reinstall On Dual Booting Macbook

I installed a recently purchased full version of windows 7 ultimate on my dual booting macbook pro laptop but am unable to install the xp compatibility module. Apparently there is an authenticity issue. The problem may be due to the fact that when i partitioned the disk and installed windows, i inadvertently corrupted the mac os x system. So i reinitialized the disk and installed os x again. Windows 7 apparently installed successfully. But when i downloaded the windows xp compatibility module it failed to install. The message indicates that there is an authenticity issue.

Problem Booting In Sata Mode

I recently built a computer using an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I installed windows 7, but realized only afterward that the mobo's default setting for the hdds was ide rather than sata.

I followed the registry hack instructions to change the "start" parameter for the msahci driver to "0" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/922976?P=1), rebooted, changed the bios setting to ahci and everything worked fine. The sata drivers loaded and things were looking good!

However, a few days later i had a problem with going into "sleep" mode. The computer hung, and after several minutes i just switched if off and rebooted.

Now, i cannot get it to boot properly with the bios in ahci mode. The registry entries are still the same as when ahci was working, but it will not boot in sata mode. I get the message "problem loading os". Changing the bios back to ide allows me to boot.

Any ideas as to what went wrong (was it the hard shutdown that messed me up?), And any ideas on how to get sata working again?

Win 7 Not Booting - Unable To Do A System Restore

I installed the last windows updates last night, and this morning when i tried to boot up my computer, it worked, but it froze when i tried to run explorer so i had to do a forced shutdown. I then was unable to do a system restore, and now i'm getting the following message:windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It goes on to ask me insert the windows disc (which i don't have), and goes on to say "an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data". What can i do to restore windows off of my hard-drive?

Trouble Booting From Windows Install Disk

I built a new computer installed windows xp no problem. It is a total sata machine hard drives and optical drive. I purchased a retail upgrade windows 7 disk. So i have to boot off the installation disc and select custom, there lies my problem. The disks loads the operating system into memory and gives me the desk top the only thing i can do is move the mouse around. It will not go to the install screen every time i put the disk into the dvd drive it says loading windows file then the windows 7 desktop appears no option to install no nothing. Is there a setting i am missing in bios where it runs the operating system off the disk and not install it.

Blue Screen Stop Error When Booting

I went on vacation june 5th. When i shutdown my computer (windows 7 professional x64) before leaving, two (2) critical microsoft updates were installed. When i returned from vacation today, june 9th, & started up my computer, i get a flash of a blue screen that has some stop error. It goes by so fast, i can't read it. I've tried the obligatory startup repair options numerous times, but it says that it cannot determine the cause of the problem.

I've tried the system restore option, but it is trying to restore to the (c:) (system) drive, which shows a status of "you must enable system protection on this drive". In startup recovery, the actual system drive has now become the e: or x: drive, so that doesn't work & the os isn't smart enough to identify the correct drive (i guess).

I've tried using the command prompt & running bootrec.exe with every available option, including rebuilding the bcd, but that doesn't work either. The /scan os option says "total identified windows installations: 0", even though i can see all of my windows files on the ~now~ e: & x: drives. I've tried booting into safe mode, but i get the same blue screen. On which the message is again unidentifiable. Everything was working fine before i shutdown my computer & the microsoft updates were installed.

Dual Booting Cannot Find Microsoft Office Suite

I have set up a win 7 dual boot on my laptop which had vista home. The c drive has vista along with all my programs including microsoft office suite 2003 and 2007. When in win 7 i can find and use some programs eg picassa, photofiltre, but i cannot even see the microsoft office suites, they are not listed under all programs on the c drive.

I have tried copying a shortcut to word (in vista) on the win7 desktop folder, but it tells me when i click that i can only use shortcuts on programs that are installed? As i teach seniors computer i need to be able to access the office suites from win7 is there any way this can be achieved?

No Tv Tuner Found

I have a new computer running windows 7. My video card is an ati radeon hd 5770 1024mb gddr5.
I neglected to order a tv tuner when i placed the order for the computer, consequently, i've purchased a tv tuner - ati tv wonder hd 650 pci digital & analog tv tuner. The bad news is the tv tuner is for windows vista.

I've downloaded from ati a driver but i am still unable to get the tv to work in my computer. The computer is unable to find the necessary tuner(s). Any suggestions ?

Thanks for the input. I've got the problem fixed. I gave up and removed the tuner card from the computer, re-plugged in everything to the computer and when i turned it on, it showed "tuner driver installed successfully". So, i put the tuner back in and everything is working fine now.

Specified Module Cannot Be Found

I have been having a problem lately when i turn on my computer. Before i have been having the error, windows startup has been smooth an quick. But right now, when i restart my computer, the startup is pretty long and when i sign in my account i get "specified module cannot be found. " It goes on to say winpap32. Rom cannot be found. I searched this file online and cannot find it. It seems since i started having this problem, startup has been long. Any ideas?

Ideas:i had a trojan between the time startup was smooth and rocky. But i removed it and did an immediate scan with no more detected.could the missing module be hindering my startup? I have tried looking online for the file and or people with similar problems. It seems that i am the only one.

No Device Drivers Found

I'm trying to install windows 7, and have wasted multiple discs in the process, trying different speeds, different softwares, even different types of discs. My problem is i'm getting stuck with the "no device drivers found. " I've seen a few threads but i cannot find an answer that will work.

The last thing i thought i would mention is that i'm currently on windows xp x32 and i'm wanting to go to windows 7 x64. Can this be done? Do i need to fully uninstall windows xp with the windows xp disc before even using the windows 7 disc?

I have a new windows 7 install that keeps having user rights issues. The user is a domain user with administrative rights and has a roaming profile set up from a previous xp system. The issue is with cached exchange mode in microsoft exchange. Whenever we set that up, outlook freezes and says that it cannot access the outlook. Ost file.

We have enabled the hidden admin and given full permission to the folders to the domain login, given specifically administrative rights to the login from the user accounts screen, moved uac all the way down to never notify, but still have the same issue. Can someone help us out, because this is driving me up the wall!

Operating System Not Found

We were running window server 2008, yesterday when we shut down the server everything was working find, the shut down was normal and nothing unusual happened. This morning when we start the server, the screen was black and only "operating system not found" appeared on the screen. When we reboot, entered bios setup, the disk at sata 0 was reset to "none", we tried to select "auto" and the system not able to read the disk info. We tried using system repair (setup disk) to recover but unsuccessful.

There was no way we can access to the system disk? What is happening to the disk? We did not perform anything on the disk and it was working properly yesterday. We have important data inside, hope anybody can help let us know how to resolve the operating system problem or at least recover the data from the disk. We are worried that the hard disk was permanently damaged.

Error - Item Not Found

Item not found, could not find this item. This is no longer located in c:users. Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again. The file is called "visual " - no extension, and a space at the end of the word. The only thing i can think of is that windows is trying to locate an item called "visual" when the real file name is "visual ".could the space be causing the item not found error, when i try to delete or rename the file? If so, how can i fix this?

Operating System Can Not Be Found

I have a sony vaio laptop (less than 2 years old) with a windows vista operating system. Every night i put it in sleep mode and leave it for the night. So, i did so last night, and this afternoon, after getting out of school, i pressed the space bar to bring it out of sleep mode. The back-light came on, but the screen stayed dark, and it started making a tapping-like sound for about 10 seconds.

After that, it went into dos mode with the message, "operating system can not be found". So i held down the power button to completely shut it off, left it off for 10 seconds or so then turned it back on. It did the same "tapping thing" then the same message appeared.

I then assumed it had crashed and i'd have to get a new operating system or something equally expensive. But about 20 minutes later, just to see, i turned it off one more time and turned it back on, and incredibly, it gave me the system recovery screen or whatever, with the different options to start it up again, then started up as usual. I have no idea what would cause it to do this and definitely don't want it to happen again. Is there anything i can/should do to prevent this?
