Using System Image To Restore Programs After Upgrade From 32 To 64-bit

Can i use windows system image to restore my programs after upgrade from windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit? I have read through a fair amount of the forum but can't seem to find a straight answer on this. I may be naive but i am looking at upgrading my 7 ultimate 32 bit to the 64 bit version and want to know if i can use the system image utility in windows back up to restore all my programs and files after the custom install necessary to get to 64bit. I don't have a lot of my serial numbers etc for programs i have purchased and it will be a hassle to get everything back on there.

Best Version For Slim / Fast System

I am looking for the best way to set up a windows 7 x64 system, which will have the following, very specific tasks:

Receive data streams from network
Some calculations with that data
Render high†quality 3d content

So i would like to have only a basic system for max performance in this tasks and no special features like media stuff, games, gadgets, desktop profiles and so on. Which windows 7 edition would be the best to achieve this, and how do i have to configure this?

System Recovery Option Not Compatible With Version Of Windows

Was organizing the sata connectors in case disconnecting/reconnecting a few hdds, one with the windows 7 64 bit os (h1). Then disconnected all hdds leaving a new one and installed windows 7 64 bit on it (h2) with only it connected. Performed fine. Disconnected it (h2) and reconnected the first one (h2) and windows 7 would not launch, so inserted os disc and it would repair something (i have no idea what as it did not indicate, i found that to be particular helpful by ms) and then windows 7 would launch. From there on, any time i switched between the two drives each having the respective os (h1 or h2), the os disc would need to be used to repair the unspecified problem and launch win. Did this a few times until the first os (h1) the disc no longer could 'repair' what ever needed to be fixed and the famous message follows:

"This version of system recovery options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows"

The real (dis)interesting part to all of this, is that yes important data is off on drives other than the os drive though did have a few files with mostly shortcuts on the desktop. In accessing the first os (h1) via the second (h2), after fighting through the "access is denied" and "ownership rights" ual busines, only half of the files that were on the desktop are actually in the desktop folder/directory. Is it worth fixing the os on h1 to get into windows to see if these files magically reappear or is what i'm seeing directly in the folder all that remains. What happened to files that were on the desktop and what is it with all of these fundamental os/hdd issues with windows 7?

Upgrade On System With Raid 1 Drive System

What is the best way to upgrade a critical system with windows vista home premium running†with two hd's in raid 1, to windows 7? I would prefer to do an†in†place upgrade, so that†i would not have†to reinstall†applications or data files. One way that occurred to me, would be to disconnect one the hd's during the upgrade. If everything went well, i could reconnect the other drive (or†better yet, a new clean drive), which would then be automatically mirrored by the hd controller. Has anyone successfully done this?

Upgrade Or Full Version?

Last fall, i bought a brand new hp laptop. It runs on vista (oem version). I would like to install windows 7 on the laptop since i'm not fully satisfied. Knowing that i have the oem version and i will reformat the hard disk. Should i buy the upgrade or the full version? If i buy the upgrade version, how can windows 7 recognize that i already have a vista license if the disk is reformatted? I don't know the vista license number and where to find it.

Activating Upgrade Version

I purchased windows 7 professional upgrade version a while back. My laptop previously had windows vista ultimate edition installed by dell when i purchased the machine. Unfortunately my hard drive died between purchasing and installation of windows 7 and the new key does not work as it tells me i'm not allowed to install as a clean installation - which quite frankly is a little annoying.

What do i do now? Do i have to go buy another copy of windows 7 or pay the difference between the upgrade version and the full version? Or do i have to uninstall windows 7, install vista ultimate then reinstall the upgrade version? Either way it is pretty annoying as there†was no mention that clean installations are not allowed when installing the upgrade version.

Upgrade Trial Version

How can i upgrade a windows 7 trial version? I had vista home premium. Was having probs.computer would freeze, a lot. Took it to a repair place. They told me the motherboard was "going". I asked them to wipe the hd clean so i could possibly sell the computer for parts. I get the computer back, and it has a 90 day version of windows 7 pro on it. And the computer works fine. So i use the computer for three months, and more, but i need to activate windows 7 pro.

I have no key and i don't want to go back to the repair place. So, what do i need to buy, to be legal? And where should i buy it? And will i lose everything again when i install? Btw. No signs of motherboard problems at this point so i'm thinking the guy just was wrong. I'm willing to take the gamble, anyway, and buy windows 7.

Upgrade Version Product Key

I have a laptop and a netbook, one legitimate vista key, one full retail win 7 key and one upgrade retail win 7 key. My question is this: currently the full retail version is installed on my laptop and is activated. I have also installed the full retail version on the netbook - this is awaiting activation after changing the laptop (to which the vista key belongs) to the upgrade version.

My question is - can i just change the installed product key on the laptop from the full version to the upgrade version without having to re-install vista first and then doing the upgrade? If you find my response helpful, please click on the "vote as helpful" button!

Reinstall Win 7 Upgrade Version

I am currently running windows 7 home premium and i would like to format my hard drive and reinstall windows 7 onto it. However, the problem is that i'm afraid i might go through some activation issues. When i purchased my pc windows vista was pre-installed on it. When windows 7 was released i purchased the upgrade version of it. From my understanding when i upgraded to windows 7 i needed to have a genuine version of windows already installed (which i did) in order for windows 7 to activate properly (which it did).

However, when i upgraded to windows 7 i did a clean install, which to my knowledge wiped windows vista off my hard drive. So my question is, if i try to do a clean install (reinstall) of windows 7 upgrade version, will i be able to activate without any issues? Here's a breakdown in case i wasn't clear in my explanation. 1. Purchased pc with windows vista pre-installed. 2. Did a clean install of windows 7 using the upgrade version, which was supposed to remove all remnants of windows vista. 3. Now i would like to do a clean install (formatting my hard drive) of windows 7 (upgrade version), again.

Restoring Backup Of Upgrade Version

My new computer will ship with (oem) windows 7 home premium pre-installed. Thanks to my student status, i purchased a retail upgrade version of win 7 professional from microsoft at a great price. Once i've checked out my new pc to make sure the hardware works properly, i plan to use the win7 pro upgrade disc to do a custom ('clean') install.

I'm really good about backing up, so i plan to create an image of my new windows 7 professional installation, and to continue imaging my pc on a daily basis.

My first question is about restoring an image: in my case, the image contains an upgrade version of windows. Windows 7 setup does its compliance checking before you format the disc. How does 'uncle steve' know that i qualify to restore an upgrade version of windows, since i performed a custom installation of the upgrade?

My second question is more complicated: i qualify for an upgrade version of windows on the basis of my original oem license. An oem license can't be transferred to another computer, but i performed a custom install of the upgrade, so the original oem version is gone. Does this mean i can move my copy of windows 7 professional to a new computer?

Re-installing Student Upgrade Version

I am planning to upgrade my motherboard and cpu very soon. I am currently running a windows 7 home premium upgrade that i brought under the £30 student offer, i am aware this is not an oem version but i am still worried. I expect that once i have swapped out this hardware i will need to reinstall the os to prevent any issues but i am concerned that this will not be allowed as i have just an 'upgrade version' key and thus a clean install will not be possible without xp or vista already on the drive. I hope that there is possibly some solution to this possible problem which means i can update my hardware, or perhaps this problem does not exist.

Upgrade Or Should I Buy Full Version Of Win7 ?

I have windows vista currently, and will be installing windows 7 soon, but my hard drive needs replaced, would it be better for me to try to re-install vista, then buy an upgrade or should i buy a full version of windows 7 for the new hard drive? My current computer running vista home premium has a faulty hard drive, i keep receiving errors and bsod's, so i am going to buy a new hard drive and reinstall windows. I decided to go with windows 7 since i have to start over anyway.

Should i buy my hard drive and use my recovery disk to re-install vista, then buy a windows 7 upgrade package or should i install my new hard drive and buy the full version of windows 7 home premium?† Also any idea if my factory recovery disk will work with a new hard drive?

Student Upgrade Version Cannot Be Used For A Clean Install

I bought windows 7 student upgrade back in i believe it was december, i kept the bootable jumpdrive i made from it and the registration key. The hard drive i installed it on failed recently, so i went out and bought 2 new ones, set it up in raid, and reinstalled windows 7 as well as transferred over some of the files i keep backed up and installed all the programs i lost. Bout a week later i realized i never activated it, and upon doing so received the error that the student upgrade version cannot be used for a clean install.

Now i am fairly sure i can find the original windows discs and registration numbers, however do i need to uninstall windows 7, install the old windows, just to reinstall windows 7 and all of the programs again? (Took me an entire weekend so i think you could see why i don't wish to do this) or is there a way of showing that i have a previous version without needing to go through the hoops of uninstalling everything.

Win 7 Upgrade Version - Installation On Reformatted Hard Drive

Win 7 (upgrade version) reinstallation following hard drive reformat. Need to reinstall xp now in order to activate win 7. I made the mistake of creating primary boot drives too small for an os other than xp or linux. Shortly after install i was unable to update my win 7 because of lack of space on the hard drive (all programs i could change the installation of, were on a separate drive). That meant i had to wipe the hard drive to repartition it.

I was under the impression that i could upgrade to win 7 after a clean install by putting the disk in and having windows check for it, like when i upgraded from me to xp. (Yes, i realize now the error of my ways. ) Now i need to fix it. Add to it, i have 32-bit xp and 64-bit win 7.

Having contacted microsoft tech support, i was told i could simply reinstall my xp and win 7 would recognize that it was there and set up dual boot. That isn't the case, as i suspected. In the reformat, i have lost some data that i thought i had backed up and obviously didn't, which is why i really don't want to reinstall win 7 a third time after reinstalling xp.

I have no windows. Old because of the reformat/repartitioning of my drive. Is there anything else i can do? (I'm so tired of being penalized with drm, activation etc. For purchasing licensed software because of all the pirates out there!).

Programs Not Responding, System Hangs

Windows 7 x64 random errors, including programs not responding, system hangs, system not shutting down, programs not starting. I'm so frustrated right now regarding all these issues. I had installed win7 64bit clean install a few months ago and everything worked fine till a few days ago, then all of a sudden my programs stooped responding, didn't start, couldn't shut down different programs, including media player, and even wouldn't shut down with ctrl+alt+del.

I got so frustrated that i reformatted my drives and did a clean install od win7 again (multiple times over the last 2 days now). The installation seems to go fine and i install my programs (office, alcohol 120, winrar, firefox, drivers for graphics and sound), and windows update, and hook up my external drives, speakers and printer. After that windows starts acting up, programs will open but not respond, won't shut down, explorer will crash and not restart, if i try to shut down the non-responsive programs (including my computer), they will not shut down and instead explorer will shut down.

My computer will open but take forever to load and right clicking anything will cause the system to hang. I have to restart in order to make anything shut down, and on shutdown, the system just hangs on the shutdown screen, forcing me to shutdown with the power button. I've tried system restore to restore to before i installed any programmes, but the problem persists. It gets so bad that i am unable to do anything at all (surprisingly the browser always works), and i've done a clean install 5-6 times already with the same problems.

Error - The Version Of This File Is Not Compatible With Version Of Windows

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computers system information to see whether you need an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

I have a large cd collection published by national geographic. The difficulty lies in installing the program that displays the pages. The program installer ends in . Ins. These picture cd's have been produced by mindscape. When you try to contact them, they are based in†france, and it is impossible to obtain support for this product. Is there any way of getting the installer on the cd to do its job of providing a means of turning the 'pages'?
