Duplicate Of Program Files

I have upgraded my windows 7 from 32 to 64 bit. I did a clean install and did a quick format of the drive first. This went ok, but i have duplicate of "program files". One is the usual program files and the second program files(x86). I want to get rid of this. I find that programs that are being installed that don't give an option of an installation location are by default being put into (x86), which i do not want.

I have tried to delete this file but the user accounts control will not allow me to do this, even though the control slider has been moved to the bottom and the computer rebooted. I am the only user and owner of the computer. The (x86) duplicates all the normal microsoft standard programs taking up unnecessary disk space, and now a large proportion of the self installed programs. I don't mind having to reinstall these if this problem can be solved.

Computer Has Duplicate Set Of Program Files

New gateway computer/all in one/64bit/more space than i've ever had and operates okay. The computer files reflect "program files" and then "program files (86)". Many appear to be duplicates. If i merge these files, will it adversely affect the performance of the computer? Can some of the files in the "program files" that are the exact same files as are in "program files (86)" be deleted or would that automatically be done with a drag and drop manuever? I'm really confused. I did ask gateway, but they would not answer the question and just referred me to the manual. It does not address this issue. Can anyone out there help me with this intriguing but irritating mystery?

Duplicate Files Will Not Delete

When i upgraded to windows 7 everything on my computer duplicated once or twice. I have done an inventory and am trying to delete the duplicate files. I select files and then either hit the "delete" key or do a right click and choose "delete. "

However. After i do this process for a few files my computer will no longer do this. After selecting the files to delete i press the "delete" key or right click to reveal the list with "delete" and neither works. The delete key does nothing and the right click does not bring up the menu with delete in it.

The only thing that helps (sometimes) is for me to close the "inventory" and re-open it. Then i have to re-sort the list to show the duplicate files and try to delete them. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't i have to close the file and re-open it again. Or turn off my computer and restart it. After deleting a few files it stops working again. L

Deleting all of the duplicate files on my computer is going to take me weeks. Doing when the delete key or delete menu doesn't work could take me forever.

Can anybody help† with this?

Duplicate Program File Folders On Win 7 Pro 64-bit

I clean installed win7 pro 64 bit os from win7 pro 32 bit on my laptop and duplicate program files folders (with and without x86 designation) have been created. The duplicated files are windows programs, internet explorer, windows defender, windows mail, windows media player, windows nt, windows photo viewer, windows portable devices and windows sidebar. Does this mean that these duplicate windows apps are needed for 32 bit and 64 bit software to be able to work with that type of software respectively? Do i really need a 32 bit and 64 bit versions of internet explorer, windows defender, mail, media player, nt, photo viewer, portable devices and sidebar?

It would have been nicer just to have one set of these windows applications that works with both 32 bit and 64 bit software. These windows applications use a lot of hdd real estate. It would also be good to be able to have the option of uninstalling one of the duplicate sets. Is the ability to do just that available now?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates†as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

Program Files (x86)

Don't know if this happened when smp downloaded the new version or when windows downloaded a new version or when i downloaded j2se runtime environment 5. 0 update 3. Cause all this was done in the same 24hrs. But after all this happened, i am now not able to get into any of the c:program files (x86) it says i may not have permission or unspecified error. The only thing that works is the 64bit explorer and the weather gadget on the desk top. Have you heard of anything like this or would you know of a fix.

Why Is Java Under Program Files?

I have moved on from discussing whether the java files under the windows folders are virus/trojan, because i have scanned them and they are the same size as those under the program files folders. My question now is why does java appear under both folders? Ihave java files under:1) program files2) program files (x86)3) windowssystem324) windowssyswow64 i've been told that java will install under both program files and program files (x86) because there are 32-bit and 64-bit versions. But that doesn't explain why there are files under the windows folders.

Program Files Download Permission

I have a new windows 7 laptop (64 bit), and struggling at times to learn how to use it. I'm in the habit on my windows xp desktop, of downloading setup/installer files into program files, where†i set things up as follows:

Program files
-Adobe
-Games
-Tetris
-Tetris program
-Tetris installer
-Inkscape
-Inkscape program
-Inkscape installer
-Inkscape tutorial #1

Sorry, i can't figure out how to make a single-space. Hopefully you can see that i put my setup/installer file in its own folder, alongside the program folder, both within†what i guess you could call an "umbrella folder". For example you can see that i might also put a tutorial or some other related item†-†i'm very organized. So when i download, i would put the setup/installer or zip file into 'inkscape installer' or 'tetris installer'.

Then when i install or unzip, i do so into 'inkscape†program' or 'tetris program'. That's how i do it on my xp desktop computer, and have been for years. But here in windows 7, when i try to download into program files, i get an error message:†"you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. "†I am the adiminstrator, my user account is the only one on this computer, and it's the adminstrator account!

After spending hours (5 or 6) with dell tech support, finally i am told that in windows 7, manual download directly into program files is not allowed. Files can only be installed directly or moved in after downloading elsewhere. I was ready to accept that and create a new sort of workflow for myself, perhaps keeping my installer files all in one folder, outside of program files. But then, while searching these forums, i came across this thread:†http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7files/thread/d2bb7c3c-bf0b-4ea6-8463-42461a56c105

It offers instructions for changing permissions. And i think i can probably follow those instructions without further help. But just before i did, i thought i should ask whether that applies to my particular problem, that i detailed above, including error message. Have i been misinformed by dell (it wouldn't be the 1st time). By following those instructions, will i be able to download in my usual manner?†Or at the very least, can i try it relatively†safely, without major complications?

I suspect that even if it doesn't solve my problem, it may reduce all the other permission related message boxes that keep popping up - moving files around, etc. I hope so anyway.

Opening Files With The Correct Program

I have done something to my laptop and i am not sure how i did it. I tried to open a pdf file and it would not open. I proceeded with trying to open it with adobe reader. I figured out later that the reason it did not open is because the original file could not be found. The original file was on a flash drive. Anyways, the problem is now when i try to open a file it tries to open with the adobe reader and all the icons on my desktop are the adobe reader icon.

I think when i tried to open that specific file using "open with" it changed everything. My question is: is their a way to change it to where the files will automatically open with the program they are supposed to? Is it something simple or will i need to seek professional help?

Could Custom Program Files Location Be Specified Before Install ?

Could a custom "program files" location be specified before windows vista is install on a computer?

I'm a fan of running the windows operating system on low capacity high speed disks and off loading my programs and documents/data to other disks. This is a simple enough operation for the documents/data but there aren't a lot of options for the program files.

A popular windows "tweak" idea that gets close to what i want to do (if it actually worked) is tweaking the default program files location stored in registry so, as new programs are installed the default location given reflects the custom location specified.

The problem with this is the program file location values in registry do more then provide a default location for installing software. The programs that vista installs on the "c drive" during a normal installation need these keys unchanged if they're to be referred to correctly later on. So like many keys in the windows registry, they provide an answer to multiple versions of an inquiry and changing the answer tends to have further reaching effects then one might think.

So, as for solving this problem around separating programs from os, i see only two possible choices (neither of which i know how to pull off currently):

1. Make the change to the default program location before windows vista is installed (with a custom install disk or the like) so my custom program location is address from the get go, making every thing (windows programs included) install accordingly and insuring that there aren't multiple program locations to be confused over.

2. Some how, do some crafty registry work that would operate as follows: if a program asks for a default location to install a program, provide the custom location i specified, leaving the "programfilespath" and "programfilesdir" keys unaffected for the sake of the windows programs that by default exist on the c drive.

Program Files X86 Folder On Different Partition

Can i create another set of program file folders on another drive in order to save space on my c: drive? Details below:i am a new user to windows 7 64 bit. I setup my computer to run windows 7 on an intel x25m ssd and created a mirrored raid using two other hard drives. The ssd runs my c: drive and my raid has my e: drive. I am limited to 80gb on me c: drive.

I would like to install large applications that i use infrequently on my e: drive using new program files and program files x86 folders. My goal is to save space on my c: drive for important apps like web browsers and media players. Would i mess anything up if i have 2 versions of the program files folders? Would windows realize that the program files x86 folder on my e: drive is for 32-bit applications?

Pre Installed Program Missing Files

My new computer was a christmas gift. It's a dell laptop inspiron 1545, with windows 7 os. It came with windows works pre-installed on it. It seems as if most of the programs are working correctlly, except for the calendar. A message pops up stating that it can't access one or more of the files necessary to open the calendar, and then advises me to reinstall "works". I'm hesitant to try this for several reasons.

1. , I don't want to void any warranties

2. , I'm just beginning to learn my way around computers, and windows 7 is totally new to me (i was using windows xp, and not with any expertise)

3. , I really don't want to uninstall and reinstall the whole program when it appears that just one part of it is not working.

4. , I don't have a printer currently accessible, so it's difficult to follow any lengthy instructions. Is there any fast and easy cure to fix this problem? Or any help you can suggest to a relative idiot? Just out of curiosity, it seems that the calendar on windows live is working, can i just copy or move it to works?

Program Association Problem With .exe Files

Have a desktop with 4 accounts (mine =administrator) and 3 others (non-admin) for each of our children. One our son's it kills all other programs/executable files. i.e. Ie8, word, excel† etc.

No program will work. They all somehow think they're pdf's. I've tried to go into control panel and fix 'associations' but ".exe" isn't an available choice. I need to read pdf's for work, but my son keeps uninstalling acrobat so that programs will work in his account, very frustrating. Ideas?

Editing Xml File In Program Files Folder

I have a .net program that reads an xml file located in the application startup folder. Under windows xp, i can simply go in and edit this file to change settings, etc. In windows 7, it is driving me crazy. It looks like i am editing it (running notepad as administrator) and writing the file back to the folder. But then i start the program, and the settings remain unchanged. I've even tried deleting the xml file completely to no avail - the program should give me an error if the file cannot be found (it does this correctly under xp), but it somehow seems to find†the original file even though i cannot see the file in windows explorer or find it from a dir command in a dos box.

Program Files In Home Premium 64-bit Edition

In my recently purchased dell studio 1550 laptop "windows 7 home premium 64-bit edition" is preinstalled by dell. It has intel core 2 duo processor†t6600 (2. 20 ghz // 800 fsb // 2mb cache).

Now in os (c:) there are two programs folders, first is "program files" & second is "program files (x86)". I made a search in google for this and came to know that "program files" is associated with 64-bit programs & "program files (x86)" is associated with 32-bit programs.

Before purchasing this system i thought that this system will only run only those programs which are 64-bit & also w7 hp compatible. But now my query is that whether i install any w7 hp compatible program (either 32-bit or 64-bit) to my system?

Can't Change Default Program For Image Files

I have just upgraded from the coreldraw x4 suite of graphics/image processing applications to version x5 on my windows 7 ultimate machine. The new version runs fine, so i uninstalled the x4 version. I then wanted to make photopaint the default program for editing a range of image file formats (i use picassa as my album and right clicking to select the program to edit the image is really great).

For some reason, however, photopaint (x5) doesn't appear in the list. When i 'browse' for it i can find the photopaint .exe file. However, after i select it and click 'open' (and the 'browse window closes) there is no change to the default program. The only correct file:program association i can see is for the native corel image format (. Cpt). What gives?

Media Player 12 Duplicate Tracks

Before you even answer. Understand that the music folder has only one copy of each track. So no wild goose chase to delete these extra songs. This has to do with media player 12 and the way it is scanning the folders and checking them against what is already in the library.

I purchased a new computer and i needed windows in order to play the games i had. I was using linux. For as much as i had to pay to get windows 7. Stupid errors like this shouldn't happen at all! I can understand it from the open source guys (of which fewer problems occurred) but not from a product i paid for. There should be a setting or a patch to fix this. Now i notice that when this happens i can close and reopen media player and it goes away until it decides to update the library again. Why by version 12! Does the library features not work properly?

Reconcile Duplicate Folders In Mail

How to reconcile duplicate folders in mail? I have upgraded from xp to windows 7 and imported from outlook express to windows mail. Now i have the windows mail folders structure mirroring the folder structure of outlook express, so far so good. But i have also a folder called imported folder which has the entire folder structure in it.

I can't simply delete that folder as i realized the duplication only later and saved e-mails into both folder structures. Not only that but also my old sent messages have not been properly transfered and my old messages are still in the old folder. What can i do to fix this mess?
