How To Restrict Access To Usb Storage Devices ?

How to restrict access to usb storage devices on windows 7 and windows xp except administrator. At my institutions computer lab this is a big problem. Should format and install all the computers due to viruses circulating from pen divers at least once per semester. And cannot prohibit the use of pen drives. So i want to block access to pen drives on all student user group except administrator.

Computer Cannot Recognize Usb Storage Devices

I am using a brand new hp with windows 7. The first time i plug any thumb drive or my external hard drive into any usb port my computer immediately recognizes it by name and i able to use files on it and save to it normally. When i safely remove it and come back the second time and plug it into my computer nothing happens. I go to my computer and see it is shown as "unknown device". When i use the "trouble shoot hardware devices" tells me it is not recognized and i get this message:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I have tried turning the computer off and rebooting but i still get the same message. I have used the update driver and get the message that the proper driver is installed. I have gone to the "windows 7 compatability center" and my simpletech 160 gb external hard drive is listed as compatible. Please tell me what i can do to make my computer recognize and allow me to use these devices. Without being able to use them so that i can do work at home and take it back and forth to school, i really have no need for the computer in the first place !

I am able to use all my external usb storage devices on xp at school as well as on an old laptop at home with no problem. The only problem i have is windows 7 apparently. Since i have tried three different usb plug n' play devices with the same result (each of which was recognized only the first time i plugged them in) it obviously is not the fault of the storage devices.

Is anyone out there?

Usb Mass Storage Class Devices Fail To Install

I'm having problems plugging usb mass storage devices into my pc (it's a dell xps8100 for what that's worth). Existing usb storage devices in that class (e.g. I had been using them on this particular system for a while) work fine. I have an ipod 5th gen, which  is a usb hard disk from windows' point of view, and it's fine. So are a few sata hard drives that i put into vantec usb housings, as are memory keys i've already used and cf/sd card readers. But. Devices that are brand new to this system. Nope. I have observed the behavior with a (very old) ipod nano 1g, several run of the mill usb keys, and another ide hard drive in a venus ds9 enclosure. All of the above use generic drivers - e.g. Disk.sys, partmgr.sys. When i plug them in, the balloon comes up.

Installing drivers. And then it gives me the dreaded red x. Driver not installed. If i go into device manger and have a look, i always see the failed device as a root device. And usually with an identifier i have not seen before. For example, if i plug in the venus ds9-housed hard disk, a root node appears called "other devices || usb2. 0 storage device" (written exactly like that) with a yellow triangle (driver not installed). With the ipod nano. "Other devices || ipod" and same yellow triangle. Always code 28 (driver not installed) now i decided to get cute and go update driver || browse my computer. And try searching windowssystem32.

It still fails, and reports the following: windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Usb mass storage device (imagine a usb icon to the left of that)the system cannot find the file specified. Since the "file" is disk.sys, it must be there, otherwise windows would not even boot. S i said, this will also happen with usb memory keys. One more data point, vmware workstation is installed on this system.

If i have a vm running and plug in any usb storage device, it will be installed/connected to the guest os (normal vmware behavior). Under vms, the devices that don't work in the host, work fine in the guests! So it is not a hardware problem, it's something in my particular windows 7 installation that is wrong somehow. (Vms i tested were win 7 x86, winxp mce, and w2k8. Works fine in all/any of them)so. I've exhausted just about every path i can think of. Nukeing windows and reinstalling is not a viable option for me. Nyone seen similar/have any ideas as to what i can try next?

Usb Storage Device Not Detected

I am using a 2gb "memory stick pro duo" plug into a "memory stick pro duo" to "memory stick duo" adaptor, this is then plugged into my trust "all-in-1 card reader" which is plugged into my computer. The computer however does not recognize that anything is plugged in and no error message shows up. In device manager i can see 2 "generic usb hub" which i know signifies the "all-in-1 card reader", but no other devices related to my memory stick show up.

I've tried this on two other computers and they both have the same problem. When i plug my memory card into my camera it can easily see the pictures stored on there. I was going to try to reformat the memory stick but if it can't be detected at all, how would i do that?

Problem Ejecting Usb Mass Storage Device

I'm having problems ejecting my usb external hard drive. I store my music on the drive and would like to have windows media player readily have access to that library. Thus, when i added a folder on the drive to the music library on my computer, i can no longer safely remove the hard drive. Are there any fixes for this issue since it is highly inconvenient to have windows media player rescan my drive to reestablish my library? I am currently running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit if that's at all relevant.

Event Id 11 When Plug Storage Device Into Usb Port

My equipment is a toshiba tecra a11-s3531 laptop with windows 7 professional, 64 bit. This computer is new within the past two months. Everytime i plug in a usb san disk cruzer 8gb drive or a seagate free agent go 320 gb portable hard drive into any of the usb only ports on this computer, two or more event id 11 errors are immediately logged in theevent viewer. The corresponding message is "the driver detected a controller error on deviceharddisk%dr%".

The % placeholder is different numbers at different events. Plugging into the combination usb/sata port does not generate the error. I have tested this behavior on an exact out of the box factory software configuration with absolutely no modifications except as needed to easily see the events in event viewer.

I occasionally see misbehavior of applications and one recent freeze which prompted me to look at the event viewer. This is when i noticed the event id 11 errors. I have also seen other error messages. I don't know if they are related, so i thought i would tackle the first one that appears time wise. Does anybody know the cause of these error messages?

My gut feel is that it is a driver problem since the computer is new and the error is logged when plugging multiple types of storage devices into any usb only port. The mass storage usb driver appears to be usbstor.sys version 6. 1. 7600. 16385 (win7_rtm. 090713-1255) which appears to be the default microsoft driver with windows 7 professional 64 bit. I have seen other very similar problem descriptions posted on other websites.

Usb Connected Printer Causes Other Usb Devices To Fail

Operating system - windows 7 professionalprinter - canon multifunction mp530the printer is listed as windows 7 compatible and i have installed the latest drivers on the canon site. The printer installed correctly and all its functions work correctly. When i connect the printer to my machine and power it on the other 7 usb ports fail to operate correctly.

I cannot read a flash drive and my usb connected card reader does not function. If the pc is loaded with the printer switched off then all the other usb ports function correctly while the printer is switched off. If i then switch the printer on i can print ok but cannot use any of the other usb devices until i restart with the printer switched off. In device manager the printer is shown as working ok but the card reader is shown as "device cannot start".

Restrict Remote Connection To Computer

How to: restrict remote connections to my computer? I was recently looking into setting up remote connection on my computer. I am wondering if there is a way to restrict the connection to a pre-designated ip address/range. I understand that the best way to prevent unwanted access to the machine is to have a strong password (which i do have), but still it would be nice to know that only certain outside computers would be able to attempt to connect. I saw that on the systems properties, there is a place to allow only certain users to have connection rights via remote desktop, but that is not what i'm trying to do.

Usb Devices Problems

Every time i plug a usb device into my computer, windows media 11 reports a fault and shuts down. I can't reinstal it, because it's no longer separate from the operating system. This started on vista, so i upgraded to windows 7 but it's still the same. What worries me is that i can't use my mp3 players and diabetes meter on any computer now - they are recognized, but i can't download anything onto them or even close them safely because i'm always told that they are busy with another task (they're not, at least as far as i know). Has the windows problem corrupted the software in any usb device i've attached to the computer since it first happened?

Usb Devices Are Not Detected

I've been reading a lot of posts in this community and in similar ones and i tried all sorts of things suggested there with the hope that my problem gets solved. Unfortunately it hasn't happened so far, but at least i know i'm not the only one frustrated. I have a toshiba satellite l30-10t laptop, running windows 7 home premium, clean install after vista home basic oem.

After installing 7, my usb devices (wd 320 gb external hard drive, usb hub, mp3 player, flash drives, mobiles phones, digital camera) worked fine for a few days, then all of a sudden were not recognized anymore. I don't get any error message, the devices are powered (lights on, disc spinning), but drivers fail to load. I've already tried the following (the list is randomly ordered) with little or no succes at all:

- Reinstalling the os
- Updated bios
- Trying to update the usb drivers
- Uninstalling the usb controllers/reboot and let windows find them again, both in normal and safe mode.
- Shut down, unplug from main power supply (with the battery taken out as well), left it overnight and then boot again
- Erased all the installed usb devices in device manager using the "show hidden devices" feature
- Deactivated the usb selective suspension in the power scheme settings and the "allow computer to shut down device to save energy" (my windows is in italian, i'm sorry if not getting the right names in english) in the usb hub's settings - solved the issue for a few days.
- Deleted the upper and lower filters in the registry as suggested in one post - this only caused a blue screen each time i tried to reboot.
- Installed the latest driver for the ati chipset (or at least i think this is what i did)
- Used this tool http://www.Zhangduo.com/udi.html to find any unknown devices, it found a couple, usb controller and usb hub, but i couldn't get any drivers.

I've seen a solution that seemed to work for some, though it was for xp, change the disableselectivesuspend value in the registry, but i couldn't figure out exactly how since my registers look a bit different than described in the post.

Conflict Between Usb Devices

I have windows 7 ultimate x64.couple days ago i bought apc smart ups 500va that has a usb connection to the pc to enable a soft shut down. I have installed the latest win 7 drivers from apc. I also have microsoft wireless multimedia keyboard 1. 1 and microsoft wireless optical mouse 2000. Once i installed the ups (it's using one of the usb ports), every time i reboot, the keyboard and mouse freeze and i can't fix that until i plug the ups out of the usb and reboot. Once i am in windows, i can plug the ups back in and it works perfectly. Re-installing drivers, removing devices and other usual tricks have not hepled. How can i get around this problem without replacing the hardware?

Usb Devices Not Registering In Win 7

Usb devices not registering in win 7 os except when laptop is restarted with usb device attached - no error messages displayed? I have tried everything i can think off this is my last resort! I am running win 7 home on a dell latitude d430 for which i have a separate media slice/docking station (which comes with its own usb ports/dvd drive/dvi port etc).

The problem i have is the usb ports on the actual laptop do not register any usb device when the laptop is on yet i do not have this problem when the separate docking station attached. The only way i can use a usb device on the laptop without the docking station is to plug in the usb device & then restart laptop. The annoying thing this is i have tried the following with no joy:

- Check device manager (all is well) & usb drivers are up to date (yes)
- Reinstalled win 7
- Enabled & disabled usb ports in bios
- Enables usb 2. 0 support
- Updateed bios version & chipset drivers
- Uninstalled & reinstalled usb drivers
- Separately scan for hardware changes
- Full virus check

I was thinking the usb ports where faulty at first but now im not so sure because if a usb device is plugged in e.g. Ipod then it will not register on os but will recieve power to charge & the same goes for my external usb hard drive as it starts spinning and led light comes on.

Readyboost And Usb Ram Devices

Is there a usb ram device compatible with readyboost that would plug into usb and allow normal volatile/dynamic memory modules to be used rather than flash devices? Seems like this would be the next logical step to dramatically boosting the throughput. Sort of a usbramdrive. This could be very useful for corporate it support bumping up against maximum ram limitation and looking for ways to boost memory without replacing large numbers of systems. A usb ram disk would be a quick pluggable solution and maybe even a way to recycle older memory into a useful application.

Usb Midi Devices Not Responding

Just recently my laptop won't let me use my midi keyboards. I'm on win 7 64-bit. The drivers are installed and it recognizes them, but when i try and use one it tells me the midi port is in use whenever no other program is open. I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling the drivers but this doesn't solve the issue. I also tried this fix from m-audio that's supposed to work if you've installed too many midi devices:http://www.M-audio.com/index.php?Do=support. Drivers&f=84 but this didn't work either.

It's not the hardware as i have a dual-boot and they work fine on the other partition. It was working last week and i can't figure out what is causing it. I have 3 midi keyboard controllers and all of them are showing this issue.system restore isn't an option as i had it turned off. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hotfix Wrecked Usb Devices

All my usb devices worked fine on windows 7 ultimate 64bit with asus m3n-72d motherboard with nforce 750a chipset and 8gb ram. Never had usb transfer issues prior to kb976972 usb hotfix downloaded from windows update as important update last night. After installed the update and restarted pc, i noticed my usb mouse cursor not moved on login screen then i used ps/2 keyboard to login windows to entered desktop.

Checked the device manager and found my usb mouse had ! Icon with code 39 error and realized the hotfix wrecked it, tried uninstalled hotfix as well restore but either failed to fix, still got code 39 error.

Searched internet for solutions, tried uninstalled usb mouse, usb controllers, usb hubs and reinstalled but still got code 39 error on usb mouse, printer, ipod and external hard drive.
How can i fix code 39 error?

Usb Devices Not Recognised After Upgrading

Usb ports have power but won't recognize devices i'm running windows 7, 64 bit and ever since i upgraded the usb ports have been really flaky and now they won't read most devices. I've tried by sansa mp3 player and nikon digital camera in my old laptop and it reads them both instantly, but my new laptop can't see them. The disk spins a lot, but nothing happens. The ports will charge devices, but won't recognize them. All the usb drivers are up to date when i go through the device manager. Funny thing is that i go from zero problems with vista to this. Any real fixes to this issue?.

Blue Screen When Using Usb Devices

I use an i2c to usb converter (aardvark) from total phase that i suspect is the device causing bsod on my system. I have been in contact with their support and they can not reproduce it. It also works on my colleges system (also win7/enterprise/x64) which makes me suspect that there's something else causing the problem on my machine. Attaching/detaching the aardvark device when no other usb devices are present seems to work, but attaching it with other usb devices attached leads to a bsod. At least this is what i suspect right now, it might also be random or i haven't seen the pattern yet.

I've looked at the memory dumps but most often they do not point at a specific driver, but system files instead, e.g. Ntkrnlmp.exe.

Can anyone help me pinpoint the problem from my log files (minidump, nfo, etc):

Usb Devices Not Detected - Bsod Driver_power_state_failure

I am using a toshiba satellite a505-s6025 running windows 7 pro 64-bit, 4gb ram, nvidia 310m graphics card. Things have been working well for a couple of months until yesterday, after i installed a western digital mybook world edition (1tb) and the most recent windows updates. After these installations, i have been having 2 problems:

1. ) First thing i noticed is that shutdown takes forever, and ends with a bsod with driver_power_state_failure message.

2. ) Secondly, none of my usb devices are being recognized anymore. Sometimes when i have these devices plugged before turning windows on they get recognized properly, but if i plug any usb devices after windows loads i do
Not get any recognition at all.

I've tried updating to the latest video drivers, bios, and uninstalling the programs that came with the wd drive (mionet and wd anywhere backup) but the problems haven't gone away.

Analyzing the memory dump led to this message:

Usb Devices Stop Responding After Upgrade

After upgrade to windows 7 64 bit home premium, usb connected devices, particularly hard drives, stop responding shortly after start up. Includes iphone, ipod, hp personal media drives. I purchased a brand new hp pavilion e9140f running a amd phenom ii x4 925 chip that had vista 64 bit home premium installed. It was eligible for free upgrade to windows 7 64 bit home premium.

I followed all instructions for upgrade and it went fine, except that now any storage device connected via a usb stops responding during file transfers. This includes my hp personal media drive that is brand new, my iphone, my ipod, etc. The only thing working is the hp pocket media drive which slides into it's own slot. I've tried uninstalling all usb devices in device manager and rebooting. Same problem. So now i can't copy files or back up my pc to an external drive.

I can't transfer music to my ipod or iphone. Basically, my $2, 000 pc is useless. This appears to be a known issue with windows 7 but there's no fix. I have tried everything except reverting back to vista where all these problems didn't exist. My usb devices worked. So this is definitely something to do with windows 7 upgrade. Can anyone help me with this. After 4 hours on phone with hp, nothings been fixed. They can't figure it out.

Usb Devices - This Device Cannot Start (code 10)

"usb devices keep getting in error in device manager after computer reboot"hi. Whenever i reboot my computer 4 of my 5 usb ports are in error in device manager with error "this device cannot start. (Code 10)". I uninstall them, restart and they begin to work. Until next restart.

I've checked if the driver version is the same for all five usb ports and it's confirmed (driver version 6. 1. 7600. 16385 from microsoft). What can i do to solve it? Computer is a dell precision 490. Device is an intel (r) 82801g (ich family) usb universal host controller.

No Usb Devices Works Except Mouse / Keyboard

There are some threads here about non working usb devices. I read them all (i think) and tried all different kind of solutions but none is working. I have a hp ex500aa-b1u desktop. I used to have xp enterprise. One day the mouse and keyboard stopped working. I suspected some kind of virus and after a lot of work managed to start it in fail safe mode, backed up my files and then reinstalled xp.
Mouse and keyboard started working but all oter devices i put in (usb flash memory, camcorder, usb disk etc) just get the message "unknown usb device". I installed w7 enterprise instead but still have the same problem.

Is it possible that i had a virus that did something to my bios? I also have a built in usb disk that came with the computer. This disk is found after maybe 15 minutes after startup. But the speed when copying something from it is very slow. Maybe 700 kb/s.

Laptop Giving Error 43 With Usb Devices

Usb nightmares - error 43 proving unsolvable.got my compaq laptop around 6 months ago and i haven't had a problem with it. Recently however the usbs began to malfunction, it would take me multiple tries to get them to work sometimes, and other times they would work instantly.

They have gotten worse and worse until now one of them doesn't recognize anything has been plugged in at all, whilst the other gives an error message in the bottom right corner which states "usb device not recognized". After further exploring this message i find that this is because of "error message 43" which tells me that the device plugged in has malfunctioned.

I do not believe this is true. I tried multiple different usb devices (ipods, flash drives, usb mouses and keyboards to name a few) all of which definitely work, as i have tried them on my desktop. My pc has no virus. The device manager assures me that all of the devices are working, and all drivers are up to date.

The lap top has taken no damage. The pc can not be restored to a previous time to make it work (indeed it has already been reset to factory setting with no joy) i have followed multiple online tutorials, found on the ms website, one of which involved editing the registry, which caused my laptop to not boot until i had run the system repair tool.

I am getting seriously weary of all of this, i just want my usbs to work as they should, especially on such a relatively new pc. If anyone knows how to solve this, or believes they may be able to if i provide additional information, please leave a response. Additional information, i am on 64bit windows 7.

Usb Devices With Sd Card Reader Stalls

I have a new dell precision t1500 running windows 7 64-bit. After a lot of trouble shooting i have found the source of my problem is the following devices: dell u2410 monitor, hp officejet 6500 e709n and hp photosmart 8450. When any two of the three are connected at the same time the boot sequence stalls between the bios load and the windows logo. The computer starts up fine when only one of them is connected. The common thread among the three is that they all have sd card readers. I have had some limited success adjusting the bios settings.

For example disabling the usb storage function in integrated peripherals, but this has bad consequences for other usb connected devices such as my keyboard, mouse and other peripherals like an hd video camera. I have also experimented with the boot sequence of the hard drive and cd/dvd drive, disabled the above mentioned devices as start up candidates and disabled boot from other devices. None of these changes have brought any success. These two printers were previously successfully connected to my previous computer running xp.

Unable To Connect Usb Devices After Upgrading

Windows 7 no working usbhey sorry about the lack of any information in the title but tbhthtas really all it is. I recently upgraded from vista to 7 and everything has been working fine. Everything was working great in 7 until i unplugged my usb wired mouse to connect it to a laptop temporarily. When i came back i couldn't get it working again no matter which of my usb ports i plugged it into. Also my usb wireless adaptor, usb memory stick and my usb webcam have stopped working as well. I should probably also mention that i now have alot of icons in my device manager called 'usb root hub' and they each have a yellow question mark by them.

In total there are 6 of them which is probably significant since i have 6 usb ports on my computer. When i go onto them it tells me that 'windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)' and whenever i tell it to update the driver it says that they have the most up-to-date driver installed. Lso my keyboard doesn't use usb and so far has been unaffected just to let you know but i only own usb mice. :(Just so you don't tell me to do stuff i've already tried here's what i have already tried:

1. Uninstalling all the usb root hub icons in my device manager then scan for hardware changes

2. Disabling all the usb toor hub icons then enabling them.

3.system restore to a previous date - i have done this twice already and each time my mouse starts working again for about 5 - 10 minutes. I have seen other places like this on the internet where people have suggested changing the registry manually but i am very wary of this method as i know just how easy it can be to mess something up in there.

Usb Devices Not Working After Power Failure

I recently suffered a power failure while i was using the computer. After powering on again certain usb devices that used to work well before returned errors. All attempts to get these devices installed fail. For example, when i plug in my sennheiser usb headset, the item is correctly identified by name but  i get the error "the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). This device did not come with drivers and before would plug and unplug it without problems.

When i plug in my microsoft transiever v3 for bluetooth, i end up with "the drivers for this device are not installed" (code 28). This item come with my microsoft wireless mouse. When i try to reinstall the latest software, it is unable to detect this item. Before it used to work without problems. My logitech usb keyboard returns an error as well, yet a ps/2 keyboard works. Usb pen drives are working well. I am under the impression that the device database got corrupted. Is there a way i can reinitialize it?
