Changing Bios Settings

I have a custom built computer that has been running the windows 7 release candidate. I've been trying to install the full version but have not successfully been able to boot from the cd/dvd drive. There are two options to prompt the screen before windows starts either press delete for bios settings or f12 for boot menu. First off, i'm not sure which one i'm supposed to so i tried both. When i went to the boot menu the screen was frozen and i could not select the boot first device. What am i doing wrong?

Changing Settings Start Menu - All Items Are Gone

I was changing settings in the start menu properties and all the items are now gone. These are the items that were there initially. Not sure what i did but i probably will remove all the items anyway and populate the start menu with my own items. Wondering what i could have done so i won't do it again. 2) in the start menu properties i don't see settings to display internet explorer and windows live mail. Do i really need to search for windows live mail in order to pin it to the star menu?

Unable To Locate Files After Changing Security Settings

Thought i changed security setting for file, but instead, all files gone. No error messages, but after having "fiddled" with a parameter in file security, the system seems to have altered my administrator profile. It appear as if the underlying file structure/names have been altered, so that previous i had c:usersole, and so on, now i have c:ole. And so on. This means that all my files are out of reach.

However, by starting an old application program from the installed program directory, that program still retains and can access earlier file kept as "recent" file in that application. I cannot copy these files to my new directory structure, as the application will tell me, that the directory (new) stated is not accessible. It appears that my earlier underlying file structure was parsed to eliminate the "user" folder, how can i get it back?

Install While In Bios Or In Xp

I don't know if i should install windows 7 before i load windows xp, while i'm in the bios (boot from cd drive) or should i run it while in xp, when i put in the disk it says install now, check compatibility online. On the directions that come with the disk, it says do it through bios, but then online it says to load windows xp and install it that way (where it actually pulls up the screen mentioned above). So my question is a- what is the difference, and b- which one do you use, and c- under what circumstances do you use it?

Bios Problems

I have a compaq presario i am trying to sell, i need to wipe the hard drive, some people have recommended using dban, darik's boot and nuke. I downloaded the . Iso, and reset my bios to cd-rom through the f10 key, saved the changes and everything. However, the computer does not boot from the cd, period. Basically i need to wipe the computer, completely. Any suggestions for the bios etc. Would be amazing, however as long as all data can be wiped from the computer, ill be satisfied.

Bios Memory Issue

I'm having memory issues; win 7 is crashing about every 36 hours. Running win 7's memory checker (f8 at startup) says i need to contact manufacturer (memory errors reported). After contacting manufacturer, he said i need to make sure (first and foremost) that my motherboard bios is up to date. Then i need to make sure other bios settings are correct as well.

In previous version of windows, going into the bios was accomplished by pressing f2 at startup; now, however, i have only 2 options when executing this procedure: (1) staring win 7 normally or (2) performing the memory test.

How do you get into the bios? Choosing win 7's help feature, it says either f2 or f12. But neither of these takes me to the bios any longer. My motherboard is nvidia, by the way. Oh, and by the way, once i get into the bios, how do i update?

No Bios Screen On Startup

No bios seen on startup - wrong resolution when finished startup but have to put the laptop to sleep and re-wake to finish startup. Acer 5920g; black screen on start-up or re-start

System:
- 5920g
- 8600m nvidia
- 2gb
- Vista home premium upgraded to windows 7 home

Symptoms:
- On start up no bios details and screen stays black but i hear the windows start up sound
- When plugging in the external monitor unable to see laptop screen as a selectable option (so fn+f5/fn+f6 do not work)
- Started about 5 weeks ago.

Actions:
- Put computer to sleep fn+f4
- Wake up and get resolution of 1200 by 768
- Re-set resolution to 1280 by 800
- If put to sleep and re-woken no impact continues to work fine
- Tried with an external monitor and works fine – can see the bios start-up routine

What has been done:
- Re-installed drivers sourced from acer and nvidia
- Refreshed the bios (source acer)
- Re-set the bios defaults
- Got confused with some many hardware suggested issues but convinced it is not a back-light or inverter problem

Will a reload back to vista or a clean install of windows 7 solve the bios post screen and resolution issues?

Bios Cannot See Any Devices To Boot

I performed a full hard disk encryption on my laptop using truecrypt. Now i cannot boot. Before i started i took the precaution to take a full image backup using norton ghost. I used the latest stable version - 6. 3a of truecrypt. I created a truecrypt rescue disk.

My hp laptop was running windows 7 ultimate (32-bit). The laptop contains 2 x 640 gigabyte hard disks from western digital - wd6400bevt blue scope 5400rpm - part number 591192-001 - model number wd6400bevt-60aort0. The system disk had 4 partitions before i started.

When i ran truecrypt i opted for: "encrpt the system partition or the entire system drive"; "standard truecrypt volume" i.e. No cascades; serpent encryption algorithm; the ripemd-160 hash algorithm; and 7 passes. The truecrypt program checked my parameter choices and did a test reboot without any error messages. The encryption process continued for 32 hours.

After the encryption finished with a "successful" message i was a little surprised that the program didn't suggest an immediate reboot. So i looked around on the disk. My file systems appeared normal. I was able to get into microsoft outlook and download new mail. I was able to browse my favorite sites on the internet. I was also able to look inside word documents.

So i decided to reboot. Since then i have not been able to get my system to run at all. I have had no luck using the truecrypt rescue disk; or a system recovery cd; or even the original windows 7 installation disk.

I get a black screen with a 4-5cm diameter blue disk displayed in the middle with the white letters, "hp". Down in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen it says "press the esc key for startup menu". Pressing esc does nothing, unless you press it 8-10 times, when it causes a "beep" noise to sound.

The problem is that the insyde h20 bios supplied by hp is unable to communicate with either of the hard disks or the cd drive; or a usb thumb drive. The bios program does talk to the keyboard.

I have tried a strategy to reset the bios back to default. I removed the battery and power cord from my laptop. Then held down the power-up button for 15 seconds to ensure any residual power had drained. Then i plugged the power supply back in, and hit the power up key. I still get the black screen with the hp logo and the press esc message.

I tried powering up and pressing a range of function keys.
F1 gives me a , "f1.system information" message.
F2 gives me a , "f2. Startup check" message.
F9 gives me a , "f9. Change boot device order" message.
F10 gives me a , "f10. Bios setup options" message.
F11 gives me a , "f11.system recovery" message.
Esc gives me a , "esc. Pause startup" message.
. But none of these options actually work.

To me this indicates that the bios programme is working partially and able to intepret keystrokes from my keyboard. But nothing else happens other than the whirr of my fan, the led lights displaying normally around my keyboard and the sound of my dvd/cd drive spinning up, and then slowing down again. It appears that in order to bootstrap my hard disk or even bootstrap from a bootable cd the bios needs to talk to one of the (now encrypted) partitions on my system hard drive.

I have tried re-seating the hard drive cables and contacts, and even swapping the hard drives over. I've probably voided my warranty by unscrewing the covers off the underside of my laptop to access these hard drives. I don't have access to another laptop or desktop capable of mounting my western digital hard drives. So i haven't been able to try the option of decrypting my system hard drive by that method.

Can Update Patches Affect Bios?

Can the windows update patches effect the bios? I had a discussion about testing patches against different platforms yesterday. My stance was that software updates/patches have nothing to do with hardware on any given machine. The response i got was well each platform has a different bios and software updates can be affected by the bios. I have never experienced any kind of relationship between a os, application software , etc. And the bios. M i correct in saying that software updates have nothing to do with the bios of the machine unless that update is specifically a bios software update?

Bios Smart Error During Boot

First i want to be clear that there is nothing wrong with my drive physically and i am having no obvious software problems. The drive that is being effected is a new samsung f3 hdd. This problem doesn't occur under any circumstance not listed. In particular, this does not happen if i reboot from linux. This is also only referring to after i first noticed. Whether this has always (in the last month) been an issue or one that appeared within the last 2 weeks is unknown to me. Every time that i shut down windows 7, upon rebooting, immediately after post, but before grub loads (a boot loader) a list of hdd using ahci at the time is generated.

In addition to my new hard drive, i have an old seagate hdd and a newer samsung drive. Neither of these have ever given me problems aside from the excessive noise from the, presumably dying, sg drive. The error, which i cannot provide a screen shot of (for hopefully obvious reasons), is "s. M. R. T. Error" next too the serial number of the drive. Additionally my computer soft reboots shortly afterwards (a second or two), before grub loads. After going through post a second time, everything functions as if i had restarted from linux (meaning properly).

This happens consistently and without any other observable effects. I'm not sure what the proper term is for the list of smart information collected by a hard drive, so i will just call it the "smart log". The smart log shows absolutely no abnormalities. I have run benchmarks and self-tests, both read and write, and forced a check for bad blocks. There are no indications of a problem. When i reboot from linux, specifically ubuntu 9. 10 x64, i do not have this problem nor any other.

I also don't have any problems booting either operating system. While there are no obvious negative (nor positive) effects, it is extremely unnerving. Given that i spent money for this supposedly glorious operating system (windows, i didn't spend a dime on linux) i expect it to work at least as well as something that is free. After skipping over vista, i'm looking to switch back to windows, mostly because i'm getting tired of only being able to play old games that work in wine (compatibility layer for *nix systems which).

Having to listen to a error involving my hdd is very disturbing. I don't want to just hear "ignore it" or "it means nothing", i want an answer. What is causing this problem?[Edit]additionally, if you cannot answer this question, it would be helpful to know where else i can go.google wasn't of any help, and i'm unfamiliar with windows help forums.

[Edit2] it probably would be helpful for the reader to know that i installed this installation of windows 7 back in, i believe, in november without any noteworthy problems. I've used it off an on, but not that i have extra space to install things on (or so i think) i will be using it more.

Hanging After Bios Load When Restart

I first experienced this problem when i changed my os to windows 7, so i think maybe there's something wrong with my installation. But after my re-installation of windows 7, it's still happening.

Problems Updating Bios After Update

Yesterday i went to the amd site to download the latest bios. I installed sp3 for windows xp and got the bsod but no specifics, just four error codes after the 0x0000007e stop. The bios saved as a winzip, and when i opened it, it was set as a vlc media player file, which seemed wrong, and as a text file, which seemed wrong. Earlier i had been able to open it, and run it, but then it said i had to shut down to get it to activate. So when i said shut down, the system said, hold on, it's not finished and if you shut down now, you could lose files. So i waited, nothing happened.

So i did it again and it said do you want to uninstall it, suggesting it was installed already.
If it was installed, it clearly had no affect on my bsod problem. I can only boot in safe modes since i upgraded to sp3. And one issue it said could be the problem is an out of date bios.
Do i have two bios? One for the cpu and one for the motherboard? I went to try and update my asus mb, but that may have been where i got the winzip issue, not the amd bios for the cpu. Either way, still getting the bsod. And when i have booted, i don't think the version of bios has changed. But i was able to check my version versus the latest versions, and i am seriously out of date.

Bios Sees New Hdd, But Win 7 Does Not

I just did a fresh, successful install of windows 7 pro. Very happy with it. The boot drive is a 80gb sata drive, residing on sata port 0. I also have a dvd+-rw sitting on sata1. No problems with either of these following windows 7 installation.

I decided i wanted to add more storage, so i bought a new seagate 1. 5tb sata drive. I completed the physical installation of the drive, connected it to the next available sata port (sata2). I turned the machine on, went into bios, turned on sata2 in bios, saved the settings, and booted as normal. I saw a notification window from the task bar indicating the driver for the new hd installed successfully.

However, the new drive does not show up anywhere in windows 7 - not in the device manager, not in the control panel, not in drivemanger. Msc, nowhere i would expect to see it. I powered down, powered back up and went into bios. Bios reports that there's a nice 1. 5tb sata drive installed on sata2.

How is it that bios can see it, but windows 7 can't? Any advice on how to get this working so windows 7 can use it? System is functioning perfectly otherwise.

Hard Drive Is Seen In Bios But Not In Win 7

Hard drive is seen in bios but not in windows 7 pro 64 bit unless rescan is initiated under the disk management snap-in. I have a 4 hard drives and a dvd rom drive connected to an intel x58so motherboard. During post and while in the bios all drives show up correctly. When windows 7 is booted the 4th hard drive is not visible under my computer or the disk management console.

Rescan of disk in the disk management console will add it but when the computer is turned off or restarted the drive is not accessible again. I have deleted the partition, re-created a simple volume, named it, assigned it a drive letter and done a full format once it is seen but again once the machine is rebooted the drive is no longer listed. I have tried three different drives and swapped sata cables and power supply.

Pci Nic Seen In Bios But Not In Win 7

I have a dell e521 pc running windows 7 pro 32-bit. Up until an electrical storm that affected the onboard nic, everything was fine. For the time being i plugged in an old motorola usg wireless port and installed the winxp drivers for it. It is working. But. I want to go back to a wired lan because there are benefits to my doing that. I ordered and received 2 pci 32-bit cards. One is a trendnet and the other a rosewill.

They are meant for pci 2. 2 and my machine indicates it has pci 2. 3 expansion slots. Slot number 4 (1 and 2 arepci exp and mini) recognizes the nic in the bios as a network card. I disabled the on-board nic. When i boot, no network device shows up in device manager. Actually the wireless motorola shows up. But i have had multiple nics in other machines with no problem.

Does anyone have an idea why windows 7 will not recognize the card even though the bios does? This happens for both cards. The chance of both being doa is quite small. Btw. They are both supposed to be windows 7 compliant. The user reviews on newegg indicate that other users have installed these cards on windows 7 with no problem.

Win 7 Does Not See Esata Drive But Bios Does

I have a wd mybook home that i bought to use with windows 7 because the drive and my computer have esata connections. The drive works if i plug it into my mac pro, but although the bios on my pc sees it and displays the connection info at boot, windows 7 doesn't see the drive at all. Disk management does not show the drive at all. I know that both a usb2 or firewire connection will work, but that's not the connection i want to use that i bought the drive for. I have seen this issue on many forums, western digital is little help and says it is a windows 7 issue. I keep my machine right up to date with updates and am at a loss as to how to proceed.

Not Even Bios Post After Win 7 Sleep

My windows 7 installation was working fine including sleep mode for about a week, when it suddenly locked up on keyboard awake from sleep. When this occurred, the machine awakened, and the fans and disks spinned up, but the monitor showed no signal. The machine would not respond to ctl-alt-del, power button press, power button hold or reset. The only way to get it to turn off, was to flip the main (rear-panel) power switch. Since then, turning on the rear panel switch and then the front panel button causes the disks and fans to spin up, but that is all.

No bios post, nothing and, again, only hard power cycling will turn off the machine. I tried clearing the bios, but the problem persist. I checked the monitor with another machine and it is working. I tried pinging the machine after allowing it enough time to boot, but there is no response. It won't boot from cd/dvd it wont boot to safe. It doesn't even post bios prompts.

Changing Keyboard

I have a laptop with a japanese keyboard. I am running an english os. I have gone to control panel. I clicked the change keyboard. I added languages so that i have both english and japanese and both languages keyboard options installed. The ime too. When i press alt and shift, the language bar does change between en and jp. The language bar also indicates that the keyboard has changed too.

However, even when the language bar says the language is japanese and that the keyboard is japanese, the pc still types as if configured for an english keyboard. I have also tried typing with the default input language set as japanese, and then tried it set as english.

Does anyone know why, despite following all the steps; despite having text services and input languages indicating that under installed services that english and japanese input devices have been added (and yes, i pressed apply); and despite having a language bar that does switch between english and japanese when alt+shift is pressed, that nothing changes and the key board still behaves as an english (us) keyboard?

Changing Activation

I recently purchased windows 7 ultimate x64 about a month or two ago. Since then my old pc bit the dust and i just built a new one and naturally i used the same windows disc (why wouldn't i, i spent 200$ on it and only got to use it for a little over a month). Anyways my question is, is it possible to switch my activation key over to this computer or whatever?

The other pc is no longer in operation and it doesn't seem fair that i would have to buy a new operating system, i paid alot of  money for it, and i have barely used it. I have spent all day trying to find a phone number to contact microsoft but i haven't been able to find one.

Hp Pavilion A6200n - Chipset / Bios Drivers

I recently bought a 9800 gtx graphics card, have it all set up, and am running into problem after problem. By having it all set up, i mean that the fan is running right now trying to find its drivers but it can't. My system doesn't even recognize that the card is there. Evga (the card makers) suggested updating my bios/chipset drivers. But, one problem: i can't find the bios/chipset drivers.

Hp has vista drivers for the bios, but not for windows 7. I called them up, but the people that i can't even understand aren't very helpful and speak from their scripts only.could anybody help me find the latest chipset/bios drivers for windows 7 on a pavilion a6200n hp computer?

Bios Install / Corrupted Hard Drive

I need help. I've been trying both disks to boot from cd-rom. And they are both not reading at all. I have tried disabling caches, and different boot priorities. I cannot go into windows itself because of "blue screen of death".
Although, i can get into command prompt with windows 98 on the other hard-drive.

-Windows xp corrupted(blue screen of death)

-Cd-rom drive does not read windows 7 disk(went through bios)

-Windows 98 command prompt works(but can not boot into safe mode/normal mode due to missing information)

-Tried both 32-bit/64bit windows 7 disks

Can anyone help? Been at this for 2 hours now, and i cannot find anyone with the right information. Im stumped.

Win 7 Does Not Detect Dual Core, But Bios Does

Windows 7 pro does not detect dual core, but bios and intel processor id tool does; have tried everything. Have a e6600 dual core, evga 680i board, 4 gb ddr26400, gtx260, 7 pro upgraded from vista. I have looked all over and tried almost everything. Bios detects dual core as it allows me to enable or disable the second one, and intel proc id tool detects 2 cores. However, windows 7, and any other programs like cpuz and core temp report one core. Under device manager only one core is listed under processors, and under computer it says acpi x64 pc or something instead of acpi multiprocessor.

Msconfig only shows one core to be enabled/disabled. Have done repair install, full install, reformat install and still only one core shows. Tried easybcd with core=0 to try and reset, and nothing. Bios is up to date (p33), reset bios settings and even escd reset. This all started after power cut out randomly. At first, windows would not boot, but did mbr repair using a 7 home disc and it booted. Few min later comp felt sluggish so looked at cpu usage and task manager and found out about only one core detected. One graph/cpu is already selected as it is the only option.

Blank Blue Screen - No Bios Error

I recently built myself a new computer. It's components are:-2 nvidia gtx470 connected via sli-core i7 930-3 3gb ddr3 ram sticks-asus p6x58d-e x58 r motherboard-antec|tp-750 750w rt power supply now, it's been running fine for the past 2 weeks. Perfectly, in fact. However my dad dragged me away on vacation to the dominican republic so i left the computer with my mom and grandma since they use it. Now, last night my mom told me that she got a problem. When she turned it on and tried to access her session she got a blank blue screen. No error messages, nothing.

I told her to hard restart it, and when she did it gave her the "windows shut down unexpectedly, start in safe mode or boot windows normally?" Message. When she told it to boot up normally, it was fine. I told her to restart it again to see if the bios would report any errors like it normally does when there's hardware failure but nothing came up. The more i think about it though, the less likely it seems like it'd be a hardware issue though, since this problem would've arisen much sooner since before i left i was playing alot of games, wouldn't it?

This morning when my grandmother turned on the computer again she got the same problem. I told her to hard reset it again, and once more it booted up normally after that. I had her run r-kill (which reported no malicious processes) and run malware bytes and microsoft security essentials. After that i'm going to have her insert the windows 7 disc to run a repair. What exactly is the problem though? Is there anything else that i should be doing?

Win7 Can't See Sata Drives But Bios Can

My computer was running win 7 64 on a 2t stripe without any problems until last night when i tried to load a game that has anti pirate software on it. It installed the game and needed to reboot. After the reboot windows couldn't see the stripe. I can see both drives in bios but windows can't find them. I have a lot of stuff on the drives and don't really want to loose it if i can help it. I cant run any kind of repair as it doesn't see the drives to fix them.

Bios Boot Menu Goes To Starting Windows

I build a pc recently and bought windows 7 off of ebay. It was not opened and still had the plastic wrap around it. It came with a 64 bit and 32 bit home edition. When i installed win7 64 bit os on my pc, for some reason it installed as 32 bit. (I made absolutely sure that the cd read 64 bit and i reformatted 3 times to triple check {2 customs and 1 upgrade}). I talked to microsoft and they are trying to help me determine what the problem is.

My system is 64 bit compatible with:intel core i7-930 2. 8ghz lga 1366 130w quad-core desktop processor corsair dominator 6gb (3 x 2gb) 240-pin ddr3 sdram ddr3 1600 (pc3 12800) desktop memory xfx radeon hd 5770 (juniper xt) hd-577a-znfc video card gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r atx intel motherboard me and the tech rep also ran windows 7 upgrade tool advisor to double check the my system was 64bit compatible, and the test showed that my system passed. So our next idea was to try the 32 bit disc to check if maybe the labels on the two discs were mixed up. When trying to boot the 32 bit disc, i hit f12 which takes me to the boot menu.

I select cdrom and when it asks for me to press a key to boot i do so. Once i pass this part it proceeds to "starting windows" and takes me to my login screen. I have tried using this disc on my laptop to see if maybe the disc was the problem but my laptop was able to start the setup. When trying to run the disc from my computer i receive the error:"the version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

Bios Boot Configuration Changes After Installing Win 7

I installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and every since then. My bios boot configuration changes. I have a1tb hd and an external western digital book. The change will often change swap the wd book to the 1st configuration. This does not work because it does not have the operating system on it. Once it changed the 1st boot to be the cd-rom drive.

The first time, i called dell and they told me that windows 7 changes it and to press the f2-setup key and go into the bios and there is a f9 key to restore to defaults. I did that and f10 to save it. It worked great for a couple of days and then something changes it back after the computer is shut off overnight and i reboot the next day.

One thing i did notice is that when i go into the system configuration under tools in windows 7 . Under the "general" tab. The use "original boot configuration is checked. I don't know how that got checked off but it will not let me uncheck it. The other setting under this tab are "load selected items" and load system services. Those are checked. The load startup items shows blue but not checked. I don't know what that means.

I am trying to figure this out. All the post tests on the system pass. And it is a new system (less than 1 year old). It is a dell xps 435t. Dell did recommend that i update the bios with their file. And actually did that before upgrading to windows 7. I have the newest updates on the system in total.
