Dvd Refuses To Take On Drive Letter

I just recently upgraded my windows vista 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit. After the upgrade, a problem came up. My dvd drive no longer appears in my computers, but it does show up in the device manager. I have tried all methods listed on the internet like reinstalling the driver, but to no avail. Then i tried microsoft's mats_run. Dvd and it identified a problem. The problem was that my dvd drive was not assigned a letter. However, the dvd drive "refuses" to take on a letter. I even tried assigning a letter to the drive myself via "disk management. " So my question is, why is it doing this and how do i fix it?

Win 7 Fails To Assign A Drive Letter To A Usb Drive

Windows 7 fails to assign a drive letter to a usb drive (in this case an olympus ls-10 recorder). I have a plug and play ls-10 recorder. It works fine on all of my xp systems. When i plug it into my windows 7 64 bit system, "nothing" happens. Upon further investigation, the disk manager sees the drives (there are 2), but no letter is assigned. I tried assigning, but i keep getting a message that asks me to refresh, restart or reboot, none of which works. I have tries to uninstall and install the devices - same result. I tried to assign the drive letters in command mode, but i get a "no volume" error. Ny suggestions?

Drive Letter Changes

I recently installed win 7 on my computer. I have three sata drives in it. Every time i reboot, two of the drives switch letters. Any way i can control this unwanted change of letters? D and e. Disk "d: appears in explorer, however, i went to disk management, and even though disk "d" is shown only on the bottom part (without a letter), it does not appear on the top list of drives.

When i tried to activate the disk or change the drive letter, it tells me the disk management is not up to date. I tried refreshing and restarting, but nothing works.

Matching Drive Letter With Physical Drive

I know there must be a simple way of doing this. I have 5 sata drives on my windows 7 system. The boot drive (c:) and another drive (e:) are 150 gb wd raptors. The two raptors are connected to the mobo's sata1 and sata4. But how can i tell whether the c: drive is on either sata1 or sata4? All in can see in the device manager is the drive s/ns. In disk management, all i can see are the drive letters and the drive type, but not the s/n. I know that i could power down, unplug one of the drives from the mobo and see what happens when i reboot, but i was wondering if there was some way to find out from the os.

The only other way i decided that it might be possible to find out is to use the bios to examine the s/ns and try booting from each drive using the bios and see what happens.

Change Os Drive Letter From D: To C:

Can i change an os drive letter from d: to c:? I have a desktop with a dual boot setup. Vista ultimate 64-bit on c: and windows 7 pro 32-bit on d: these are two separate hard drives. I want to run with only the windows 7 os and do away with the vista os. I can simply disconnect the unwanted drive and run a repair from 'boot with cd' to write a new bottmgr, but i am uncertain if this will work? Also will this process effectively reassign the drive letter of the windows 7 os?

If it does change the os drive letter to c: will all the applications etc run properly as they were loaded whilst the os was in fact a d: drive?

Win 7 Does Not Assign A Drive Letter

Windows does not automatically assign a drive letter to any of my usb hard drives or flash drives, if i go into the disk management utility the drive is always sitting there online and active, and all i have to do is right click and assign a drive letter and everything work as usual. However that is super annoying and there is no reason windows shouldn't be doing this for me. I assure you there are no driver problems corrupted drives, jumpers or anything out of whack, i am an it guy myself. I have just never ran into the situation and couldn't find an answer after looking on here for 20 minutes and googling around and checking other sources.

How To Change Drive Letter To C For New Win 7 Upgrade?

How to change drive letter to c for new windows 7 upgrade from xp on new drive? Ok, so i was one of those guys who tried to upgrade from xp to windows 7 home premium directly from the dvd. After many errors from and a bad memory stick, and many activation failures, i upgraded to windows 7 from within xp. But, i installed windows 7 on a new drive, using custom as it states.

Now the only problem i have, before i go installing my applications, it that the windows 7 is on e drive. I pulled out the old ide drive that contained my xp, and now only have my sata drive. But i have drives e and f. How do i fix the drive letters, so windows 7 os, is installed on the c drive ?

Hard Drive (boot) Letter Changed

Upgraded from windows xp to windows 7. Before upgrade i installed a new larger hd. It was the only hd in computer. Installed windows xp and no programs. Followed by installing windows 7. When went to install my programs only then did i learn the computer gave the new hd the letter "i". No "c" drive is shown. No changes were made to the bios or motherboard. Just unplugged the old hd and removed it and using the same plugs to plug in new larger hd. What happen? Want my primary and boot drive to be id as "c" drive. How may i change it?  Will start all over if necessary. Once this is fixed plan to reinstall old hd as secondary drive and use it for backup.

Mystery Drive Letter In Windows Explorer

I have a strange problem with windows 7. When i open "my computer" i have a drive named "local disk q" which seems to be a phantom drive. I can't get any information on it and, while i can rename it, that is all i can do. It does not open and there are no clues as to where it is located or why it is appearing. (It does not appear in the drive management area, only in windows explorer and any box that refers to the drives on the computer. ) Does anyone have a clue as to how to get rid of this or where it may have come from?

Win7 Change The Drive Allocation Letter

I have a dual boot system vista 64 bit on c: (which i would love to get rid of) and i allocated b: as the drive letter for my windows 7 64bit op which is the default boot system. I've had one or two problems with installing ati drivers for one but my main problem seems to be the inability of w7 to recognize large usb drives (iomega- seagate freeagentgo) both should but won't be recognized.

I've tried disk management to change the drive letter (as b is supposed to be reserved for floppy drives) but it won't let me. I have tried to remove vista and restore images of 7 but they always fail, so without a massive reinstall how can i change the drive letter to anything but b. I do have a lot of drive configuration and cloning tools so if any ones ever been in the same boat help me i'm sinking fast

Programs Not Functioning Properly After Drive Letter Change

I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. When i first partitioned my hdd, the 2nd logical drive was labeled j:, which was the next available letter after all the optical drives and built-in flash memory readers. I prefer to label it d: (to immediately follow from the boot partition which is c:). I used the disk management feature to change the drive letter from j: to d: (and of course moving the rest of the optical drives and built-in flash memory ready by 1 letter).

When i run some programs, i get this error message: "there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive deviceharddisk4dr4. " The options to click below that message are "cancel", "try again" or "continue". For some programs, like google chrome, microsoft works word processor and spreadsheet, clicking on any of the 3 options will allow the program to run normally.

For other programs, like windows live movie maker, clicking on any of the options will result in a "drive not ready" message and lead to more problems. For example, i cannot load any of my existing projects because i cannot get to the screen that allows me to navigate drives and folders to choose my file.

I uninstalled and reinstalled movie maker, but the problem is still there. Seems to me that it is not the individual programs that are causing the problem but something in windows 7 itself. How do i get rid of the error messages and get the programs to function normally? Do i have to edit the windows 7 registry? If so, what exactly needs to be changed?

Can't Assign A Drive Letter / Mount In Disk Management

Windows 7 shows external drive in device manage but cant assign a drive letter/mount in disk management. I have an external seagate 250 gig drive which currently works fine on my xp netbook and which worked fine on my vista laptop until i "upgraded" to windows 7 (manufacturer's upgrade via dvd).

Now the external drive (ntfs) is seen in device manager but does not mount. In disk manager it just labels this drive as "disk 1 online". If i try to assign a letter i get an error message that cant be done because the console is not up to date (ie the message tells me to refresh, restart the manager, or the computer). Of course none of those 3 options work!

Acer Aspire Refuses To Shut Down

I bought an acer aspire 5738 just before christmas and sent off for the windows 7 upgrade disc and installed it. It was working fine until today, when all of a sudden it refused to shut down.
I've left it for over an hour, and all it that happens is the screen switches off after a while. Every occasion so far, i've had to hard shut down the laptop. I've tried restoring from an earlier point, closing everything down via task manager before shutting down and the various windows diagnostic tools, but nothing seems to be working. I don't understand why it wasn't a problem until now, and is now screwed up, as i haven't installed any new software in a couple of months. Can anyone help me?

Win 7 Refuses To Permit Driver Update

I am trying to update the driver for my intel wireless 5300 from version 12. Xx to version 13. Xx.

I've downloaded the updated driver from intel several times and run the executable, but when i check device manager, i'm stuck at the old driver. I have clicked uninstall in the device manager as well. The device disappears from the device manager. When i install the updated driver, the old driver somehow rises from the dead and the new driver is nowhere to be found.

Finally, i've clicked on update driver in the device manager and had the computer look for the driver. At this point, my computer tells me "windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" which is 1. Incorrect and 2. Annoying as i don't need some dingbat computer telling me, with absolute conviction, what i know is not true.

Ie7 Refuses To Open - Net Framework Issue

Via email a ms tech support advised me last week to uninstalled all .net framework components using win installer clean-up download which i did. Then download the .net framework packages. None of the downloads will install. Some instructions i've used seem to require ie for downloads but my ie is inoperable right now. Ie will flash for a brief instant then go hidden.

This self-help via ms links odyssey began when i tried to install update .net framework sp1 and .net fw 3. 5 family update v 2. 0-3. 5(kb951847)x86 and it always fails to install. 3 days ago i was told in an email that an xp support professional would contact me w/i 72 hrs. That has not happened. My whole system is a mess. How do i unravel this mess and get back to where i was? Also, system restore will not restore to an earlier date.

The drive did not respond in a fixed time to the access attempt 1100:012a, 1100:022a, 1100:032a, 1100:042a. My cd/dvd drive stopped working. When i attempt to reinstall the driver, it fails. On the drive properties, i see "drive cannot start code 10". I have replaced the drive, and the sata data cable, and still have exactly the same problem. I have run the psa test and it revealed the error code listed int he title of this message.

Fixing Cd/dvd Drive

My cd drive has been missing for several weeks, and do not know exactly when it disappeared. I went through the deleting upper and lower filters as most places say, then rebooting, and it didn't help. I have created a new reg file and merged, and that brought the drives back, but they did not show that a cd was in. It has since disappeared again, and i do not have lowerfilters.

I have tried system restore, but i always get an error code because it "cannot access the file". I have updated the firmware from the dell website, and ran several different virus scans. Itunes and my computer say the drive is missing, but device manager says it is functioning correctly and completely updated. My dvd drive is there, it is only the cd drive. I am running windows 7, and have a dell inspiron 1750.

Also, i checked my brothers computer, who has the same set-up, and his registry files are all identical to mine, and his drive works just fine.

Dvd Drive Disappeared

My dvd drive disappeared even though i stopped making virtual dvd drives for iso images. I thought upgrading to windows 7 might resolve the 2 problems rpc sever is unavailable and the dvd drive not detected. I upgraded to ultimate as my computer is windows vista home basic. Its compaq. Sorry for bad spelling. When i want to make a partition rpc server is unavailable. Dvd drive is not in device manager. The hardware and devices troubleshooter thinks i have no dvd drive. I have no iso imaging programs now but i need one.

Dvd-rw Drive Disappeared

I install a antivirus software in my laptop and then suddenly my dvd-cd-rw drive disappear. I have a vista premium and after i understand that the antivirus is for window xp. I don't see the driver when i go in to my computer. In the device manager there is no dvd drive. There is "a" drive and i uninstall the software and restart my computer twice; but the dvd-cd-rw drive did not come back.

I then reboot my computer, lost everything, the software came only that day and did not work properly because it only work with a cd not a dvd. But by the next day it gone again. Cd/dvd Drive Has Gone Missing

I have a new computer with windows 7 professional 64 bit and everything was fine but now my cd/dvd drive has gone missing. It's nowhere to be found in explorer and if i insert a cd or dvd nothing happens. I tried the troubleshooter but it tells me i don't have a cd/dvd drive. It's also not listed in device manager. I'm a complete non-techie type of person but was wondering if my drive has just gone kaput or maybe one of the leads internally has become disconnected. The computer is only about 3 months old. I have done all the updates that have been recommended. I would love it if someone could give me some ideas about fixing this.
