How To Move Program, Program(86) Data Folders ?

I'm going to install win 7 64-bit on a 64 gb ssd and i want my program files to be on my hdd or my d:/ drive. I've read a few articles that contradict each other - one that states to use a registry change, a microsoft article that states ms doesn't support such a registry change, and a suggestion that all one need do is to change the drive letter on the installation of the program.

I'd appreciate it if someone would help me understand the best way to change the location of my program files. I am also concerned about leaving my temp, tmp, and perf files on the ssd. Should those be moved? And if so, what might be a good way to do this?

What Is Data Execution Prevention Program ?

Data execution prevention can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely. If dep notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you. I have done everything i was told to do to fix this problem and i still keep getting this message. It always says, "internet explorer has stopped working. I don't know what to do.

What is data execution prevention?
Data execution prevention (dep) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory locations reserved for windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files.

Data Execution Prevention Program Error

I keep getting the following error message associated with data execution prevention:

Event type: bex: iexplore.exe  p2: 8. 0. 6001. 18702  p3: 49b3ad2e p4=unknown  p5=0. 0. 0. 0 p6:00000000  p7: 05493cd8 p8: c0000005 p9: 00000008

This is an error associated with windows xp service pack 2. I have service pack 3. The error message appears as a popup whenever i am on the internet, enabling me to report the error to microsoft. All of my updates are current via automatic downloads from microsoft. I have tried every fix and work-around from microsoft's knowledge base and nothing, repeat, nothing has solved this problem. They do not work!

Please pass this to someone who can solve this problem, or tell me how i can remove data execution prevention from my computer. I have plenty of alternate protection through symantecs norton software.

Any help would be appreciated, my free support expired two weeks ago (although the problem has been happening for weeks, i just today was able to track it down).

Two Separate Program File Folders

When i transfered my files from my old windows xp pc to my new windows 7 pc using windows file transfer it created two distinct "program files" folders. One just says program files and the other is program files (x86). This is causing me lots of problems in that there are xp and windows 7 versions of the same programs and i keep getting all sorts of error messages. What is the best way to resolve this problem as i am reluctant to "uninstall" various programs using the control panel as only one version shows up in the uninstall process and i do not know which one it is referring to.

Duplicate Program File Folders On Win 7 Pro 64-bit

I clean installed win7 pro 64 bit os from win7 pro 32 bit on my laptop and duplicate program files folders (with and without x86 designation) have been created. The duplicated files are windows programs, internet explorer, windows defender, windows mail, windows media player, windows nt, windows photo viewer, windows portable devices and windows sidebar. Does this mean that these duplicate windows apps are needed for 32 bit and 64 bit software to be able to work with that type of software respectively? Do i really need a 32 bit and 64 bit versions of internet explorer, windows defender, mail, media player, nt, photo viewer, portable devices and sidebar?

It would have been nicer just to have one set of these windows applications that works with both 32 bit and 64 bit software. These windows applications use a lot of hdd real estate. It would also be good to be able to have the option of uninstalling one of the duplicate sets. Is the ability to do just that available now?

Move User Folders Off System Drive

Move user folders off system drive? Want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not individually, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on a brand new notebook with win 7 home premium preinstalled. Using win 7 language. I shrank the hard drive volume to 55gb.

Made new simple volumes. I want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not by individually changing the location tab on dozens of folders, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e from the gitgo. In xp, i could just change the "my documents" link on each desktop to go to e*. * Instead of c*. *, But with win7?

Like windows home server and most wise os installations, the system drive is isolated and a drive or 2 or 3 for everything else.get a problem? Just restore the system drive.

Setting Live Mail Program As Default Program

I am trying to set windows 7 live mail program as a default program. It does not show up as an option on my "set default programs list". I know that i have it because i am using the program. Where else can it be? I asked this question earlier in the context of trying to attach smaller picture files to an email. I followed the written instructions in the help section and those of the person who replied to my earlier question(ramesh). They both said to select live mail from the default programs list-but as i said before it is not on the list. Do you have any other suggestions?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Do You Want The Following Program To Allow Changes To This Computer

I always get message "do you want the following program to allow changes to this computer?" When starting mozilla thunderbird after upgrade from vista to windows 7 home premium. I have changed the "privilege level settings" of thunderbird to "run this program as administrator", but it still makes me log on as administrator every time i start thunderbird to see my email.

This is not only annoying (i.e. Having to login as administrator every time i start thunderbird), but also prevents thunderbird from starting when accessed, for example, from "windows photo viewer" email button (apparently, it tries to start thunderbird, but doesn't have enough permissions so fails).

I don't get this with any of my other applications (e.g. Firefox, etc. Run fine without requiring me to logon as administrator). I'm not sure if i have installed thunderbird odd, or did something else different, but this never happened to me in vista. I don't want to remove all uac security for all programs. What can i do?

This File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. " Error when double clicking folder or c drive. Can open c drive or folder by double clicking. I have had an issue for quite some time with open my c drive or any folders. Every time i click to open either one, i get: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default program control panel"

However, if i right click on the mouse and choose open, i can access the drive/folder with no problem. How do i correct this back to ordinary clicking on the drive/folder?

Program Crash

I have recently purchased a new dell vostro 1220 laptop with windows 7 home prem installed. I also have a web design package known as incomedia website x5 evolution installed, the problem is it doesn't seem to want to operate under windows 7. The program crashes frequently and the only information i have as to why is listed below. I have tried the following:

-Uninstalling and re-installing (as administrator)
-Setting compatibility mode as windows vista
-Uninstalling again (and deleting the actual program directory from the programs folder)
-Re-installing the software again and installing the latest update for it

It still will not work, i have also submitted this question to the manufacturers of the software, incomedia, but thought i would also ask here too just in case someone has a quick and easy answer to sort this out.

Program Development

Part 1: why on earth do you keep moving things around every time you upgrade your products?
I have just installed windows 7 and once again i am reduced to a novice user because nothing is where it used to be. ("My files" is now a "library", my "user account" blocks my access to ordinary user files, i have to "hack myself" into the administrator account to be able to use ordinary programmes, all the "shared" and "private" setup is once again different. It just goes on and on and on and on. )

How do you expect me to become an advanced user of all the new options you are keen to include if i have to spend my time relearning all the basics for every update? By all means keep improving the program and the way it works behind the scenes and add fancy layout, but why change the basics just to fit some kind of new interface logic! To learn how to work inside someone else's way of thinking takes years, i really. Don't. Want. To. Start. All. Over.

Part 2: if you want something useful to stick your hands on, develop a spare part of memory to have a manual override for any process that is accidentally started by misclicks. For instance, if i clicked internet explorer and it does not respond because my network router is off, i want to be able to override the program by clicking to shut it. I do not want to have to wait for the explorer to analyze why it does not get a network connection. I am happy to let it analyze if i don't know what's wrong. But most of the times i know what's wrong. I misclicked. I just want it to stop - shut - immediately and let me click the right button without a 30 second analysis delay while every ounce of windows is occupied on this task.

It's all there, i can see the icons and such, but i cannot view it when i click to open it; no permission.
