Transferring Files

My computer died last week as the motherboard decided to take a permanent vacation.

I have taken my old hard drive out which was running windows xp and there is no damage to any of the data (thank goodness). The hard drive is now in place in my new computer as a slave drive only (e).

I want to transfer the settings from the old hard drive to the new hard drive which is running windows 7. I know there is a file transferring wizard however as the drive that i want to transfer from is a slave drive in what they term as the "new
Computer", i'm at a loss as to how to handle it.

The most important thing i am trying to get to happen is to transfer my settings and data from incredimail. I also want all of my bookmarks and other data too, of course.

Can anyone please offer me a solution of how to use the transferring wizard to transfer from a slave drive to the c drive?

Transferring Files From Another Hd

My old computer's hard drive had a meltdown 2 weeks ago. I got a new computer with windows 7 on it and i'm just trying to transfer the files from my backup hd onto my new hd. I thought this would be an easy transfer but it keeps telling me "you need  permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file"i keep hitting "try again" and nothing ever happens. I just hit cancel and nothing transfers. How do i fix this problem? I'm on the only account the computer has (which is an admin account) and i' getting to the end of my rope with all this.

Transferring Wma Files

When i transferred data, setting etc from old pc (xp) to new pc (windows  7) all files transferred ok except for the wma files from windows media player. When played the music is about a 2 second play then on to next song. Is this some restriction of license? Some of the music was purchased and downloaded online store. The remainder was ripped from cds that i own. The new files appear to be same size of old files. I did use the windows 7 transfer program on new and old pcs. Is there a conversion program to repair files or will all files needed to be downloaded or ripped from cds. The other possibility is i transferred them incorrectly. Any suggestions?

Transferring Outlook Files To Win7

W7 has been installed on an existing system but while files were backed up i don't think it was done in the correct manner. While i can see the . Pst files in both windows. Old & the backup location (external hd) i can't open them or transfer. Likewise if i transfer the windows contacts, windows live doesn't recognize them. Since installing w7 we are also having trouble with the sound or rather the volume. You can hear it out of the rear connection (using earphones)but not through the front or speakers. Sounds can be just heard but volume is too low to understand what is being said but the volume is set on high.

Live Mail Transferring Files

I am going to have a "clean install" done on my computer. I am upgrading to windows 7 from windows vista home premium. I know i am going to lose all of my files , programs etc but, should i copy any e-mail folders i need to keep or is it possible to download them after the install is complete. I will be most appreciative to anyone that will answer this question for me. I know one of the programs i use for mail resides on the server and one resides on my computer when i bring it up to read and then place it in a file folder.

Upgrade Fails At Transferring Files At 60%

I have a toshiba satellite m305d-s4829 laptop. I tried running the upgrade exe. Fails. I can't really catch the error message but it goes to a blue screen, and all i see is the word memory on the screen. This happened like 3 times. I read around on here, and it seems drivers can affect the upgrade process. I go to the toshiba website and download the toshiba upgrade assistant. I run it. It's automated. Does some downloads, uninstalls somethings, and prompts me to run the windows 7 iso.cool.

The upgrade gets around the same point and fails for the fourth time. What gives? I apologize for not being more specific on the error message. It clears from the screen very quickly and sometimes i even miss it. Any help is much appreciated. I rather not clean install. I have many audio production programs and i rather not have to spend days getting my stuff back in working order.

Problem Transferring Files Using Usb Drive

I am trying to use windows easy transfer via usb to transfer files and some programs new computer: i have a 16gb flash drive. When i try to d/l win easy trans file from desktop old computer to the flash drive, dialog box comes up saying 'too large file - open program and delete some files  or change to other program. I can not seem to make either work. Any suggestions?

The machine is working and many of my programs ie; office, quicken, etc are also working, however a number of other programs are not. I thought getting a print out via windows easy transfer would be useful in determining other changes needed. The computer builder may have transferred over as much possible via a hard wire between two computers, i can not find out as as he will be out of the country for a year. (In national guard, guess where he will be for a year!)

Question: if he transferred most over via hard wire drive to drive, can i still use windows easy transfer to check out what is left? Any suggestion?

Installation Stalled At Transferring Files Settings And Programs

I am doing an upgrade from vista to win 7. The installation got stuck on the last step in the list: "transferring files, settings and programs". The progress indicator show 62% for that step. At the bottom it says: "transferring files, settings, and programs (520258 of 688330 transferred)" . It has been like that for the last 3 hours or so. What are my options other than just resetting and hoping for the best?

Any time i transfer files through any usb port the computer freezes, a buzzing noise comes from the speakers, the monitor turns off and the computer restarts. This happens when putting films on my hard drive, songs on my phone and syncing my mp3 player so that i actually can't do any of them.

I have uploaded the dump files here:

Transferring Win 7

I believe someone had posted the same or similar problem like i had. But i just want to make this specific. And i am not a computer professional and i need help with this. I owned a laptop that has 2 hard drive slots. I just bought an ssd and would like to had it installed with the windows 7.

My main drive is the stock hard drive which was originally windows vista home premium 64-bit, but i upgraded it with the windows 7 professional 64-bit (by using the upgrade cd) and it has been 7 months since i upgraded.

So here is my plan, i am going to install the new hard drive with my recovery cd for windows vista, and then i am going to upgrade it with the same windows 7 upgrade cd (or with the software i downloaded with the purchase). Then i will make my stock drive as my secondary drive or the storage drive. By the way, i want to have a clean install on the ssd! Is that going to work? If not can anyone please give me suggestions and step-by-step guidance to do it.

Transferring To External Drive Before Upgrading From Xp To Win 7

Transferring to external drive before upgrading from xp professional to windows 7 professional and trying to open a . Mig file after using windows easy transfer.

Following downloaded instructions from windows easy transfer website. However -
1. External drive came under 'network' and not with usb
2. No 'check boxes' appeared - but programme paths appeared
3. No list of programmes transfered appeared

Despite the above being different from those on the windows guide, the data appears to have been transfered to my external drive and saved as savedata. Mig file, in 'from_old_computer: it has 151, 430, 517kbs. That would appear to be all the data. However, i cannot open a mig file to check.

Moreover, i have concerns that, when i go to transfer the data back to my pc after installation of windows 7, my pc does not recognize this file. On trying toopen the . Mig file, a message said it could not oped this file, it didn't know the program which set it up, and asked if i wanted to check online for the program. It took me to the windows website, which didn't recognize it either. As mentioned, i do not want to proceed with installing windows 7 until i am certain that i can transfer my data back to my pc.

Transferring Data From Other Pc Download Via Usb Stick

New pc with win7 ultimate. Purchased outlook 2007 from microsoft and delivered via e:mail link on my other office pc that has outlook 2002 running my e: mail, downloaded direct to a new 4 gig usb stick and copied to the new win7 pc via this stick, when trying to extract the program, the process starts but very quickly windows 7 reports an error basically saying not enough memory to complete the task.

This is the first s/w package put on this pc, it remains basically the way it was delivered. Has 1t/byte raid 1 drives with 12 g/byte memory. Cant seem to be able to contact microsoft or the s/w provider (digital river) to see if the s/w packaged is faulty or corrupted.

Error Message - Access Denied - After Transferring Hard Drive To New Pc

"access denied" error message after transferring hard drive to new computer. I have changed laptops. The monitor went out on one it was going to be $200+ to fix so i bought a new one. For the purpose of information recovery i took the hard drive out of the old laptop, vista os, and put it in my desktop plugged up sata to move the information over to my external hard drive.

I go to the users folder on the hard drive and see the owner profile and the public profile. Unfortunately none of my information is saved in the public profile. When i try to access the owner profile is says: "access is denied. " I feel that this is probably in part to the fact that i had a password on the profile. Is there a way that the password can be deleted from this file through the registry?

Trying the drive as the primary and not a secondary was a failed attempt. The drive would not boot all the way through the startup because of hardware on the desktop. I am at a loss, i have looked on google for a resolution but with no prevail.

Win 7 Halts When Transferring Data From Usb Device To Computer

This issue has to do with erratic performance in windows 7 when transferring data from as usb device to the computer. It does not present itself when transferring data to as usb device from the computer. When transferring data from as usb device to the computer (ie downloading pictures to the computer from a memory card), windows 7 will not allow programs to be launched and it eventually grinds to a halt on any existing programs. Performance returns if the data transfer is canceled or allowed to complete.

The data transfer will almost always complete if not canceled. This is a problem when there is a large amount of data to transfer as the computer is not usable until the data transfer is complete. Not something i expect from a brand new computer.

I have tried several different usb devices with the same result so i know it is not the device itself. Hp tech support had me run a diagnostic on my motherboard and everything checked out ok.
The computer is a hp e9300z with amd athlon ii x4 630 processor and 6 gb memory. It has a foxconn motherboard with american megatrends bios.microsoft reports a known issue similar to this in article kb976972. I tried this but it did not fix the problem.

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

A2c Files Downloaded As Zip Files

If you go to alice.org and try to download one of their image files, ie8 changes the extension from a2c to zip making the file unusable unless the user manually changes the file extension.

http://alice.org/index.php?Page=gallery/amusement park/index

In our school network users are not allowed to change the file extension so that does not work. I found that the user when downloading has to change the file type to all files and change the file extension then. This is a bother to have to remember. When i tried with a different browser (chrome) the a2c file was recognized correctly. The computers in my school are laptops running windows xp. At home my desktop runs windows 7 and the problem is there as well. There was no problem with ie7.

Docx Files Downloading As Zip Files

I am having an issue with docx files turning into zip files when i try and download them in ie8. I have done alot of research on this problem and have looked into the 2 main solutions to this problem: 1) set security settings to "open file based on file content, not file extension" to disable  2) check the mime type table on the web server and make sure the office 2007 extensions are added.

The first step i tried and the file was still trying to open as a zip file. The second one i was only able to ask the vendor because the web server does not belong to me, but the vendor said they were able to get the same exact docx file to download as a docx file and everyone on their end was able to. I am able to save the zip file and rename the file extension to docx and open it, but sadly this will not be an acceptable answer.

I've tried adding registry settings to allow it to open with docx files as well with no success.
I am curious if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?
