Folder / File Permissions In Properties Tab

I have a particular program that will not start because i do not have write permissions for the folder, sub-folders, and files associated with the program. Going to the properties tab reveals that the folder is read only. I uncheck the box but can't seem to make it a permanent change. It always comes back up as read only. I have gone into every imaginable edit/advanced tab possible and given permissions to every possible group i can think of, yet despite the fact that every kind of permission possible is enabled and visible, i still can't uncheck the read-only box permanently and i still get "you do not have write permissions" from the program. I have tried changing ownership, running as administrator, and yet no progress on this problem.

Error - Program Doesn't Have Permissions To Modify Destination Folder

I installed windows 7 32 bit (accidentally). I am now trying to install 64 bit (from download) and after unpacking i get the error that the program doesn't have permissions to modify the destination folder or something like that. Any ideas? I also tried to burrow down into the unpacked folder and run the 'setup' but it told me i was trying to install the 64-bit version over the 32 bit version, but i thought i was doing a 'clean install' and not an upgrade.

File Download Search In Folder

I use windows 7 ultimate. Firefox latest version. I download music preview files, alot and i want to find a way to better short my file during download. e.g. Axwell - take this ( dj remix )

That is a song name. I have a music folder with many subfolders ( their name are based from source of download or genre ) my problem now is a have multiple ''double'' / alot of same songs in different folders, which take too much hdd space.

When i click download, i have a pop up window, ask for ''save as'' it direct me to my music folder, now i can see if i already own the file if it's written exactly the same (ask to replace file). But when i am into a sub-folder i dont know if i already have it in music main folder or another music subfolder. ( Lets say, im into c:/music/electro , i want to know if i already have that song in c:/music/house or c:/music or all sub-folder in music without having to look every folder before download. )

Do you understand my request? Is their such feature in windows 7?

Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.

Can't Open Downloads Folder, File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". As far as i can tell, all my other folders open up fine. Last thing i did was trying to download some software that would gradually turn my volume down so that i could fall asleep to it. It didn't work (older software, seemed like it wasn't compatible with windows 7) so i deleted the application and the installer which were located in my downloads folder.

Editing Xml File In Program Files Folder

I have a .net program that reads an xml file located in the application startup folder. Under windows xp, i can simply go in and edit this file to change settings, etc. In windows 7, it is driving me crazy. It looks like i am editing it (running notepad as administrator) and writing the file back to the folder. But then i start the program, and the settings remain unchanged. I've even tried deleting the xml file completely to no avail - the program should give me an error if the file cannot be found (it does this correctly under xp), but it somehow seems to find the original file even though i cannot see the file in windows explorer or find it from a dir command in a dos box.

.xml File Located In System32 Folder, Is Not Recognised

I have a problem concerning an xml document and windows 7 system32 folder. I have recently installed the latest driver for my nvidia graphics card and one of the files it loads is nvapps.xml into the windows7 system32 folder. I also use a programme called nhancer which modifies the nvidia programme for the benefit of ms flight simulator x (my hobby).

I now find that nhancer cannot load because it cannot find the nvapps.xml file in system32. If i highlight the nvapps.xml file in system32 and press open or edit, i get the message which says :- windows cannot find "c:windowssystem32nvapps.xml". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. (Actually, i get this message three layers thick on the screen (i.e. I have to acknowledge it three times before the message disappears from the screen)). I have found that there are ten *.xml files within system32 and five of them produce the above message and the remaining five all open easily and correctly. Of the five that windows cannot find two of them are associated with the nvidia driver and the other three are not in any way connected with that driver. I have also found that if i copy the nvapps.xml file to a different folder or hard drive, then i can open or edit it quite normally and without difficulty. I would be grateful for any advice or comment that about my problem.

Full File Address In Folder Explorer Bar

How to show full file address in folder explorer bar in windows 7? Is it possible to make the address show similar to xp (c:program filesadobe. )? It's extremely confusing as it is now, especially when in a mapped drive (i would expect the base level to show the mapped drive rather than "computer").

Recycle Bin Properties

On the general tab, the settings for selected location are grayed out, so i can't change them. And by default my single local disk (c:) is set to "don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted. "I can see the maximum size was set at 17286, but i can't change the recycle bin to actually use that location.

I can find the c:/$recyclebin, and note that the folder is set to "read only". And even if i remove the read only attribute and have it applied to all of the contents, the next time i look at it i find that it is still read only. Any way to re-enable the recycle bin?

Cannot Save Properties Of Folders

I create a folder, call it test, on my desktop and click on "organize" and then "layout" and turn off the "navigation pane" this is the way i want this folder to appear. I then close the folder. If i re-open it right away it looks as i left it. However, now i click on "windows explorer" and it does not have a "navigation pane" which it needs, so i click on "organize" then "layout" and then "navigation pane". I finish with "windows explorer" and close it and go back to my "test" folder and lo and behold it has a "navigation pane". Shouldn't i be able to maintain different appearances for different folders and applications?

Everytime i try to open something it tells me that i do not have permission to view it and then gives me the link to be able to change that, and so i do, but it still wont let me access anything. It's all there, i can see the icons and such, but i cannot view it when i click to open it; no permission.

Security Permissions

I just upgraded from vista home premium 32 bit to windows 7 professional 64 bit. Before i did this i copied a massive number of files to a external usb drive. Once i got w7 64 bit installed and opened the external drive, where i put all the files, i can't see the files. The new w7 user is part of administrators. Administrators has all permissions set. When i tried to apply administrator permissions to the entire external drive i get nothing. How do i get my new w7 user to see all the files on the external drive? On all my external drives?

Permissions For Mapping C: Drive

Home network includes a vista machine and a 7 machine. I normally map the c drive of each machine to each other with a drive letter. I have mapped external drives on one machine to the other just fine. When i try to map the "c" drive i get a permission denied. Something happens if i try to map c:usersbruce. Bruce is my one and only user and is system administrator. I have gone to sharing and set everyones permission to full control with no luck. What do i have to do to see the c drive from one machine on the other.

As no one seems to have an answer to this problem or the many other similar ones posted. I guess i have no option but to re-format the hard disk and reload everything which will take at least three days. Seems like the days of early windows are back! Can anyone tell where to go to resolve this problem?

I seem to have lost quite a few administrator rights which is a real pain. How can i reset them as i am the only user on this computer and because i have lost them i can't update my web sites. Outlook will not let me import my old . Pst file.

Administrator Permissions / Privileges

Another new computer running windows 7. I'm pleased with windows 7 but have encountered the problem of being owner and administrator account but there are privileges not allowed. The error reads "cannot import c:usersdocumentsieopen. Reg: error accessing registry. " I have used this script before on a windows xp computer and had no trouble at all. I am asking someone to help me change the administrator privileges so i can add to the registry. Like the answers i read it is hard to believe a computer with me as administrator doesn't have these privileges.

Shortcut - Right Click - Properties - Target - Can't Type Into Target

I just purchased a dell netbook, with windows 7. I am installing a game called guild wars. As most fans of the game know, you can download the entire game client and updates, by adding the command -imag at the end of the "target" under properties after right clicking on the guild wars shortcut. I was successful on installing the game, but i can't type in the "target" box in order to type -imag at the end of the directory (c://. -Imag) if anyone can help me with this problem i would really appreciate it. Once again the question is, how do i make it so i can actually type in the "target" box?

I had problems sharing files on my network and i went to different support forums here looking for answers. Reset All User Permissions To Default

How to reset all user permissions to default? I accidentally stopped a user permission change task and now my system is all messed up, programs won't load correctly after reboot, etc. . I can't change the permissions back because it tells me that i do not have access to certain folders. When i try to find these folders to change them manually, for some reason they are not visible any more. (I have show hidden files to show them). I tried a system restore and the restore points are corrupt, so, i have been looking for a way to reset all permissions to default or factory setting if you will.

Is there any way to reset all permissions to default without going one by one?

Security - Total Loss Of Permissions And Access

I have been trying to work this one out on my own for over a week now. I have a pretty good idea that my computer is being used through remote desktop. My administrator rights have been trumped and i can't access important parts of my computer systems. I have tried a ton of the advanced prompts in attempts to regain rights over group policy. I didn't make the disks for a recovery, i know, what your thinking but i have only had this computer a couple of months.

Now after doing much reading about the mechanics of my computer i now realize my error. Bottom line is i need to know if there is anyway to get rid of the rif raf running my computer systems. I also have had a ton of stuff installed in my system that i don't recognize at all. (In the device manager) at times i have had my internet adapters disappear and after painstaking hours finally found a way to retrieve them. I am by no means an expert on computers but know enough to navigate it well, so if someone could help with instructions on how to clear all this out.

I know how they breached my system so once their out i know what i have to do to keep it that way but i just am struggling with getting this all fixed. I don't have a ton of money or a debit card to order the disks either. So any help or advice that i can get for free would be greatly.

I am at my wits end with this computer and am about to throw it out the window not really but, i can't take too much more, it took me all night to figure out why i couldn't get online just so i could come here and get this typed out. I look forward to any suggestions.

Tab For Recycle Bin

Can't see files in he recycle bin from drives other than c:all files deleted from the root drive c: can be seen in the recycle bin. Having multiple drives (local and networks), if you delete a file it goes to the recycle bin, but you can 't see. Steps taken. I can see all of my drives' recycle bin when i change view setting to show hidden files. What i can't do - not sure i should be able to do - is change the attribute settings on the recycle bin's to deselected hide file. Maybe that is what's missing. Any suggestions?

Reset Security Settings / User Permissions To Default

I replaced my winxp computer with a new windows 7 machine this weekend and i'm still getting my feet wet with the new os. I tried to download and install a game, but i kept getting error messages indicating that i didn't have the proper rights. The solution ended up being to set the uac settings to zero. Before i got there, i made some unfortunate attempts to change permissions on the c: drive that got stopped part way through due to errors popping up.

Is there a way to set my permissions all back to default without recovering back to before the changes were made? There would be quite a bit of work (downloaded programs, rearranging files after the transfer from my old machine, etc) lost if i just use the recovery tool.

Access Denied On Usb Drive After Removing Permissions

I accidentally removed all the access permissions from my external usb drive, after i had already taken full ownership of the drive, and now it shows me the drive icon and letter "e:", but states that access is denied when opening. Even the "security tab" is gone from the drives properties.

I was trying to change permissions to include inheritable ones, and i hit the wrong button to remove i think(i was stupidly moving too quickly through all the options, my fault), and after that i was no longer able to access the drive. I have thousands of files on this drive! Please help, anyone? The drive still shows up within windows explorer as e:, and disk management shows it as a healthy (primary partition).

Update: found the fix, thank you lord! I tried going into safe mode just in case, and it worked! Go into safe mode, and login with an administrator account. From there you will be able to right click on the drive and have the "security tab" working again, where you can take ownership and add permissions back!

Solution To Alt Tab Not Working

This is not a question but a solution that took me about a month to find.consistently found alt tab to change programs would not work, and when i hovered over the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, the postage stamp image of the application would flash on once then disappear. Sometimes i could just not get an open application to maximize. Usually use my hp laptop at a workstation but when using it in another location noticed the problem had disappeared.

Figured there was something about the workstation. Tried back at the workstation and through a process of trial and error found it was a logitech skype usb speaker phone. It is a fairly old model - maybe 2007 - which i got as a freebee when i purchased a pc. It doesn't seem to like windows 7. Unplugged it and there is no further problem.

Classic Mode Using Alt+tab

I'm running win7 ultimate in the classic mode (the aero mode was just too much visual noise) and for years i've used the alt+tab to switch between applications. Starting with vista the contents of the pop-up alt+tab window sorts and does not retain the positions as it did in xp. Are there any settings that i can change to get the xp non-sorted window. With the darn sorting i find myself searching for the "the" window i want to bring to the foreground. I almost always have several applications running (10-20) and multiple windows within each application thus it is not uncommon that i will have 30-50 windows open when i'm researching a topic and attempting to create a document or presentation on the topic.

Power Management Tab Missing

I just reinstalled windows 7 home on my tablet pc, the hp tm2t. Since i switched my hdd to an ssd. However, as i'm setting the tablet pc's multitouch function so that it would be responsive after idle (before my reinstall, i could uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"), i realized the power management tab in device manager isn't there anymore.

The item i'm looking for is under the human interface devices -> usb input device (it's not specified, but this device manages the multitouch for my tablet). I still see the power management tab for my wireless card, biometric devices (fingerprint reader) and some other usb root hubs. Does anyone else have the same problem? Or know a fix?
