One Hard Drive Not Recognized

I have 3 drives in the following configuration before installing win 7 rc:

  1. 120gb drive with xp 64 sp2 (used as a c drive)
  2. 120gb drive with vista 64 (used as d drive)
  3. 320gb drive used between them for data (used as e drive). Both oss could see the 320gb drive.

Did a clean win 7 rc install on the vista drive (replacing vista and all). Now, i can not see the "e" data drive when booted in win 7, but when i do a defrag, the defrag program (from accessories) sees the drive though not as a drive letter. Xp64 can still utilize the data drive as well. Please let me know what specific info i need to share with you if necc.

System: windows 7 professional
Machine: elitebook 8530w i have recently backed up my entire laptop on an external hard drive, after that i re-installed windows 7. Ide Hard Drive (usb 2.0) Not Recognized At Computer Startup

Ide hard drive in external enclosure (usb 2. 0) not recognized by windows 7 at computer startup, but recognized if it is rebooted after windows 7 is done loading. I have a western digital 500gb pata (ide) hard drive in an enclosure. I leave the enclosure on at all times since it has a cooling fan.

However, if for whatever reason i need to reboot my system, windows 7 never recognizes this drive unless i turn off and on my enclosure. Once i reboot my enclosure, windows 7 recognizes the drive and tries to autoplay. I would like w7 to recognize my drive at startup so that i don't have to reboot my enclosure every time i reboot my computer. What can i do to fix this?

Usb Hard Drives Are Not Recognized

My computer crashed 4 days ago and i needed to replace the mother board. During the process i was talked into upgrading from vista to windows 7. I spent the last 2 days uploading all my programs and up grading those that didn't work in windows 7.

I have a wd passport 160 gb usb hd that did not work when i plug it into the usb port. I called western digital support, thinking i needed a new driver. They told me i would need to buy a new portable drive as they were not supporting my passport. Everything works in my computer’s usb ports, flash drives, and phone. The only thing that does not work is my brand new portable drive i just bought (hp 320 gb) and my old passport. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is wrong?  Both drive work in 2 other computers both running xp. The wd drive worked well in the old vista computer.

I have called western digital and hp support. They tell me that the drives are built into windows 7. I have been surfing all night; i can’t find anyone who has a fix for the problem. I ran a system scan looking for hardware drivers from the microsoft web site. I have installed window 7 upgrade advisor and ran the scan twice. I've check for compatibility on the microsoft site which says the dive is supported i only need to plug it in and it should work. The computer won’t even recognize or acknowledge the drive is plug in. I have tried different plugs it still does not work.

Usb Flash Hard Drives Not Recognized

Since purchasing my computer, i've been able to use the various usb drives for other hardware such as wireless internet, hauppage tv reception, and wireless mouse/keyboard. However, any attempt at reading an external flash drive (then larger external hard drive) on all of the ports the drive is not successful. The drive appears in the device manager and is appropriately named, it is also listed in the disk management window as disc 5 (underneath the various sd drive ports and whatnot-one of which appears to be assigned the name of usb external hard drive when in fact it is not).

Upon attempt to reassign a drive path/letter the message appears that "disk management console view not up to date", but restarting does no good. Dell support is not supportive and claim it is a software problem because the ports work for other devices.

Upgrading Existing Hard Drive To Ssd Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a laptop with one hard drive slot. I want to change the existing hard drive slot to a ssd. My laptop came with windows 7 pro pre-installed (no disk supplied). When i purchased the machine i created the windows recovery disk.

I would like to know if the upgrade is as simple as:

1) removing the current 500g hard drive
2) installing the new new ssd
3) running the recovery disks to re-install my copy of windows 7 pro or am i missing something?

Optical Drive Is Not Being Recognized

I can see it in the bios and everything appears normal. It is visible in windows but only in the drive properties and it has a yellow exclamation mark. The device status says the following: "windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)" error message: code 52

I've tried deleting the drivers then reinstalling them upon restarting my computer, but the same thing happens every time. I don't know of anything that i have changed recently that could have caused this.

Usb Drive Not Recognized After Reboot

I have a windows 7 64-bit system. I connected my maxtor 500gb usb drive while the pc was on and it recognized the drive using the default windows driver. Seagate, which owns maxtor, does not have a 64 bit driver for this drive. Seagate and microsoft say the drive should work with the windows driver. It was working beautifully.

Then i re-booted my system. Upon windows re-start, the drive came up as "usb device not recognized". In device manager it is a yellow icon next to "unknown device". I removed the usb cable and re-plugged it to no avail. I then removed the drive's power cord and plugged it back in. The drive was instantly recognized again.

What is happening on a re-boot to mess up the usb connection? How can this be resolved? I don't want to have to pull the power cord on every re-boot.

Floppy Drive Or Disk Not Recognized

Windows7 ultimate (64 bits) does not recognize a usb-connected floppy drive or disk that works fine with windows xp and, before i installed windows7, that used to work with vista ultimate (64 bits). I can plug this teac drive into another machine, a notebook running windows xp, and there is no problem-i see the six .doc files on the diskette, and i can open all of them. But when the same drive (with the same 3. 5" floppy diskette) is plugged into the window7 machine, i am told to insert the diskette, which is never read.

A speedometer for computer slowly proceeds across the top of the screen, but nothing happens. No matter what i do, i see: "please insert a disk into floppy disk drive (a)". Rebooting does not help. And canceling and reinsertion of the diskette changes nothing. Launching word and then trying to open the files from word's open gets me nowhere. Disabling my anti-virus software changes nothing.

Windows tells me that the floppy drive is installed; i see it listed by name (teac drive) in device manager; and from device manager i have tried deleting the driver for this teac drive-windows then reinstalls it. I also tried to update this drive from device manager, but then i am told: "windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date". Please help.

Flash Drive Is Recognized Then Disappears

I bought a lexar twistturn flash drive in december. It has functioned wonderfully with windows xp and vista, but my computer with windows 7 on it has given me problems. The computer is a compaq that came with windows 7 pre-installed. When i plug the flash drive into any of the usb ports, it is recognized and autoplay starts, but about ten seconds after the autoplay window opens, it closes and the flash drive is no longer recognized. This continues in a cycle for as long as i leave
The flash drive plugged in.

I have googled this problem to death, and have found no solution. I also contacted lexar tech support and was told that the problem is likely being caused by the pre-installed drivers. I have checked that my the os is up to date (it is), as well as trying to find drivers to re-install on the manufacturer's website. They may be there somewhere, but i have been unable to find them.
I'm pretty much at the end of my rope with this problem: please help?

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Dvd Drive Not Recognized Unless Scan For Hardware Changes

I have 2 ide optical drives in my desktop, a sony ddu1612 dvd-rom (cable select in the slave position), and a pioneer dvr-116d dvd-rw (cable select in the master position).

These worked great until i installed windows 7, and actually still work great. The only problem is that each time the computer is booted, the pioneer will not show up until i go into device manager, under dvd/cd-rom drives and "scan for hardware changes" (the sony is always recognized as it should be) - then everything works fine, until i reboot the system.

Is there a permanent way to fix this so that both devices are automatically recognized each boot?

Usb Flash Drive Driver Install Failed / Not Recognized

I plugged in a flash drive to my laptop the other day and i got the plug and play message, it downloaded the driver but the installation failed. Now windows 7 will not even recognize that the flash drive is plugged in or try to install the driver again. The flash drive still works on my main computer just fine and other usb devices including other flash drivers work just fine on this laptop. Device manager and computer management under administrative tools do not register it as being plugged in either.

I could not find a way to check if maybe the driver did install and was corrupted. Is there anything i can do?

Usb Flash Drive Error - Volume Does Not Contain Recognized File System

I plugged in my usb flash drive into a computer using windows 7. It always prompts me to scan and fix or cancel. I canceled every time, but i got annoyed with it popping up every time, so i told it to scan and fix. A loading screen came up so i patiently waited. After completion it asks to format my usb flash drive. I can't format it though because i have homework files and all my other personal files on there. So i canceled the format, but every time i plug it into my computer it asks t format it. I even plugged it into a computer running on windows xp and it wanted to format it.

When i try to run it without formatting it it says, "e: is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. " My question is, what did windows 7 do to my flash drive and how do i recover my data?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

Hard Drive Not Available

I did an upgrade from vista to windows 7 home premium. I did a clean install, not an upgrade. I had 2 hard drives on the pc. At the start of the process, it asked it i wanted to partition drives. I responded yes and did the reboot from the disk. Each hard drive had 2 partitions under vista. I wanted to move to 1 partition under windows 7. It allowed me to delete the virtual drives and proceeded with the install. Everything when fine from there without any errors.

When i check my computer, only 1 of the drives is available. I went to device manager and the controller for the 2nd drive is there. It says it is working properly. I tried updating the driver and it said i had the latest driver. I checked the tab that shows drive statistics and it is blank. At the bottom there is a populate button. I clicked it and it displays the statistics for the drive correctly. It doesn't make it available. If i exit and come back in the statistics are blank again. I have done reboots and it is still not available under my computer. How do i get windows 7 to see this drive?

Hard Drive Score

I had 2 older hard drives running at 7200rpm in sata raid 0 mode and installed win7 64bit. Score was 5. 9. So i went and bought 2 new hard drives, still seagate but with 32mb cache, 500gb. Firstly i installed win7 on 1 drive and still have a score of 5. 9. Then i installed it on both new hard drives using raid 0 mode again and the score was still 5. 9. How do we get a higher score with this thing? All else is above 7 on my system but just hd's are lacking. What can i do?

Partition Hard Drive

I got a new pc with windows 7 64-bit. The c drive has 578 gb of free space. I want to partition it so the c drive has about 100gb, and then my data drive will have 478gb. When i use the shrink volume utility in computer management, the most i am able to shrink the c drive is about 302gb. That will put the c drive at 276 gb, but i would like to get it down to around 100gb. Do i need to buy some partition software to do this or is there another way to try this in windows.

I replaced my hard drive and then tried using the windows 7 upgrade for full installation and it seemed to take, but it didn't give me a chance to put the product key in and now it's asking for the product key(which i tried) and saying that i have 24 hours to put a full version product key in or i can't use my windows. What can i do? Please let me know soon.
