Win 7 Sees External Usb Hard Disk But Can't Access It

I'm using windows 7 home premium and had a power supply go out causing my computer to shut down in the middle of moving some large files to a fantom 1 tb external usb hard disk. I've got the system back up and running (after repairing the boot disk that had a corrupt boot sector) but when i plug in the external disk, windows won't allow me to access files. It does recognize the drive when i plug it in but if i go to properties and try to look at drive details or do disk maintenance, it gives an error message saying it can't access the drive. Also, the external drive is not partitioned.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the fat or partition table that got messed up when the power went out. I ran the easeus data recovery wizard-it was able to access the drive just fine and tells me the data is still there.

Any thoughts?

Access Denied With External Usb Hard Drive

I messed up on this one. I was removing advanced sharing on an external usb hard drive. First i turned off sharing, then i went to the security tab and removed "everyone" which was the only user listed. I got a warning that this would only allow the originator to access the disc. Since i was the originator i clicked okay. Bad move! Now i cannot access the disc. I now realize that i should have added "administrator" to the users when i deleted "everyone".

Now for the question. Does anyone know how to restore permissions on this ntfs external usb hard drive so it can be accessed? Since access is denied, i cannot restore permissions with the advanced sharing wizard in win 7 ultimate.

Error Message - Disk Is Corrupt Or Unreadable - External Hard Drive

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Tried everything, i can plug it into windows 7 pro x64 and get an immediate prompt to reformat, followed by disc is corrupt or unreadable. I can disconnect immediately and plug into a xp home computer and it works just fine.

Tried doing the security allow all users so its not locked from this new computer, didn't work, installing drivers hasn't worked, basically at a loss here, not enough room to back it up on the working computer, format on the new, and reinstall it on newly formatted hdd.

When i try to backup or save a file on the external hard drive, i get the following error message: "unable to access disk in drive e:. Please make sure disk is ready and not write protected". How can i get access to this drive other than using the backup utility in windows 7?

External Usb 2.0 Hard Drive Not Detected

I am running windows 7 and trying to plug my 200 gb hard drive from an old computer with xp into my new computer via usb 2. 0 from an external enclosure. The external enclosure is has its own power source and does not require drivers. When i plug it in the usb port i hear the chime indicating window detects an external device and it will appear under usb devices in device manager but only for about 10 seconds and then disappears.

It never shows up under disk management nor under computer as a mass storage device. I have tried using other usb cables/ports. I have tried exchanging the external enclosure for a new one thinking the first was faulty but that didn't help.

Unable To Use 2 Hard Disk Through Usb Connection Simultaneously

Unable to use 2 external hard disk through usb connection simultaneously connected - with each disk of different capacity. When using 2 external hard drive one of 1 tb another of 2 tb on a single computer together - one of them gets recognized properly the other one does not get recognized. Inserting the same drives one at a time make them work fine. The drives are seagate freeagent drives.

The computer nearly hangs when the drive that is not properly recognized is accessed. If it does not hangs it may show situations such as drive needs to be formatted - or does not have any data etc. I am facing these on problems in two computers - one core 2 duo desktop pc using intel motherboard and running windows 2008 server (with all important updates applied) and another core 2 duo dell inspiron laptop intel chipset running windows vista home basic (with all important updates applied). I am sure it is driver issue - but the drivers are provided by microsoft not seagate here.

Permission Problem With External Usb Hard Drive

I keep getting change permission to open file messages when trying to access files. I had a pc with windows xp home addition on which packed up. So i've just brought a new laptop windows 7. I need to access some files on the old pc so i took the hard drive out a placed it into an external case. When connected through usb to the laptop i can explore the old hard drive and see all the files i need. But when i try to open or copy the files to the laptop i keep getting permission errors.

I've changed the permissions to the admin on the laptop and checked i have all rights to the files but its still not letting me access them. Is there anyone that can help or is there a program out there that can help me access my files.

Creating System Image On External Usb Hard Drive

Creating a system image on an external usb 2. 0 hard drive
Applies to: windows | windows 7 | system repair and recovery

We have a new hp g60-533cl notebook running windows 7 64-bit home premium. Attached to it is a new hp usb 2. 0, 500 gb pocket media drive (pmd). I use windows 7 to create a system image of the laptop's hard disk(s) onto the pmd. In the windows 7, create a system image dialog box you see the following selected drives:

Drive used space

System (system) 33. 66 mb
(C:) (system) 40. 76 gb
Recovery (d:) (system) 9. 87 gb

Space required to save a backup of the selected drives: 50. 66 gb

I watch the winodws 7 progress thermometer as it creates the image for these drives, and you see that all 3 drives are "imaged" to the pmd. Once the process has successfully completed, the pmd has a folder on it titled, "windowsimagebackup".

I then right-click on this folder and select properties. It provides me with the following information.

Location: f:
Size: 33. 9 gb (36, 501, 698, 638 bytes)
Size on disk: 33. 9 gb (36, 501, 749, 760 bytes)
Contains: 21 files, 4 folders

My question: why are there only 33. 9 gb of information saved to the image, when the 3 drives listed above required 50. 66 gb of space? Is all of the information listed above actually being saved? What's happening ?

External Usb Hard Drive Problem, Hotfix Won't Work

When transferring larger files from my computer (windows 7) it stops, and then won't recognize my usb device. Another forum identified the nvidia chipset and found a hotfix, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?Kbid=976972. I downloaded and ran it but unfortunately i get the message "this update is not applicable to your computer".

I have an acer aspire x1800 (new, which the retailer replaced thinking the usb issue was a motherboard problem), but the same problem still exists on my replacement computer when copying files to a usb external drive. My processor is intel 2 quad cpu @2. 33 ghz. Ram is 4gb. My ide ata/atpui controller is nvidia nforce serial ata controller.

Sata Hard Drive To Usb Adaptor Cannot Access

I cannot get my windows 7 x64 laptop to access my sata hard drive connected via a usb adaptor. Upon connecting for the first time or after you have uninstalled the usb mass storage device, it successfully installs the drivers. But you cannot see the drive listed in "my computer" nor access it. If you go to disk management the drive is acknowledged but offline. I had no problem accessing an ide drive connected via a usb adapter that was made by the same manufacturer that makes the sata to usb i am using. I have read/wrote to this sata drive and usb adaptor plugged in several other machines using vista and xp. My sata to usb adaptor:

Hard Disk Cleanup

I did something dumb. I moved a program (not installed a program) to program files (not program files(x86)) of my local c hard disk. I realize it shouldn't be there and want it off. When i look at the instructions for disk clean up i get confused about what to choose and find that for such  a potentially ruinous application the instructions are too simplistic. I don't want to ruin anything and want to be sure i'm doing the right thing first. I have windows 7 pro.

The program does not show up at the control panel uninstall although the uninstall should be with the program. I can't find it anywhere. The program seems to work fine but i'd like to install it properly. Everything is working fine so i'd rather leave things as is if i would run a risk of any malfunctions. So if anyone out there can convince me on how to get rid of the offending program i'd bevery thankful.

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Hard Disk Space Unusable

I am using windows 7 32 bit edition on dell inspiron 1545. The specifications are
Intel core 2 duo
2 gb ram
250 gb hard disk

There is only one drive ( c drive ) in the partition. Only 232. 77 gb is allocated out of 250 gb. The problem is that 118 mb is unallocated. It was the oem's partition but i formatted it because i didnot knew what it was for. The left over 118 mb cannot be merged with 232. 77 gb. It only shows the option of creating new drive. On the other hand c drive does not show the option of extend volume. How can i use the 118 mb ? Do i have to format ?

External Hard Drives Disappear

My external hard drives "disappear" and are not recognized by windows 7 after it's been running for 5 to 30 minutes. I installed windows 7 on november 1 to the computer which had been running vista since its purchase in july. I have two external hard drives a 250 gb seagate freeagent (it has its own power source hooked up via usb) and 1 tb hp personal media drive (slides into the personal media drive bay of my hp computer). I have had the seagate drive for two years, and it worked well with my old computer, never a problem. I have had the hp drive for two months, and it has experienced only light use.

Last week, after windows 7 had been installed for a week with no issues, when i went to save a .doc file on my seagate drive, it said that the drive could not be located. I ended up saving the file to internal disc and restarting the computer. After the restart, my computer recognized my seagate drive, and i was able to save the file. A day later, i attempted to save an image i had been editing, and the same thing happened. The problem began to occur more frequently.

Then, last night, i opened itunes and tried to create aac versions of songs from 2 new audio cds. Halfway through then ten songs on the first cd, an error message popped up indicating that the seagate drive was no longer there. After another failed attempt to import the songs, i popped in the other cd, but itunes could not copy the files to my desired directory. I changed the directory where i save files to the c: (internal) drive, and songs were successfully copied.

I restarted my computer and tried to import songs on the seagate drive once more. It finished the songs on the first disc successfully, without incident. Then i put the second disc into the cd drive. After importing one song, an error message again popped up. I clicked the computer icon on the desktop, and it indicated that the seagate drive was still there. I double-clicked the seagate drive, and instead of displaying files and folders, all it said was "this folder is empty. " I then disconnected the seagate drive from my computer. The computer folder still displayed the seagate drive as connected to the computer.

Fearing seagate drive failure, i pulled out my old computer and hooked up the seagate drive, just to check. All files & folders on the seagate drive were present. I decided to hook up my hp personal media drive to my old computer and proceeded to copy all files on the seagate drive to the hp drive. This took about two and a half hours. I then hooked my hp drive back up to my new computer and tried saving word files, image files, and importing audio files from cd into itunes. Again, just like the seagate drive, things worked well to start, but after 5 or 10 minutes, the drive had disappeared. Every time i restart my new computer, the drive is there for anywhere from two minutes to half an hour, and every time the drive disappears.

I have tried going in to disk management and rescanning disks. I have tried going in to device manager and uninstalling both seagate and hp disks, then restarting the computer, and then hooking them up once more. I have no idea why the drive would be recognized for a short amount of time and then disappear. I have checked for loose cables. It's just bizarre because i didn't really notice any issues with either drive for the first several days after i had installed windows 7.

External Hard Drive Issues

I have just upgraded to windows 7 premium from vista premium & tried to attach an additional external hard drive fitted in an appropriate caddy and connected to my pc via a usb lead, i can see the hard drive in device manager as a separate drive, however i cannot see it anywhere else and therefore cannot use it, this was exactly the same in vista premium. I had previously reformatted and zero filled the external hard drive and not reinstalled any software.

Ejecting External Hard Drive

Using the ejecting external hard drive procedure, i get a ms typed response that drive is in used and directed to close off any program using it. None is being used at the time. Opening up "devices and printer" gives me a trouble shooting opportunity to no avail. Other than doing a restart or shut down, what can i safely do to pull out usb port connection of external hard drive. Any suggestions?  This is my first time using forum, i hope this works. Because i gave my email address in the sign up, i am expecting a response through that method.

External Hard Drive Problems

I am having a problem with an external hard drive (toshiba multimedia center gigastore) which worked with an old laptop on xp but that has died a death now, i have connected the drive  to my latest laptop with windows 7 and on switching it on my laptop gives the usual 'ping' to say the it has detected a usb connection but then nothing happens.

If i go to my 'computer' the hard drive is not showing but if i go to 'devices & printers' the hard drive is there but i am unable to open it, this hard drive is important to me as it has a music collection on it spanning many years and is pretty much irreplaceable. Everything says that the device is working properly & i have searched for drivers etc. Without luck, can anyone help ?

External Hard Drive Troubles

I have a windows 7 starter netbook that refuses to let me use my newly formatted external hard drive. It was formatted in fat32 and i had some large hd videos that i wanted to store on it so i formatted it to ntfs. Now the only place i can find the hard drive is under "devices and printers". It is not under "computer" with the rest of my drives. This hard drive works fine on all the other computers in the house including two other windows 7 starter netbooks, a desktop running vista, and two other desktops running xp. Do you guys have any idea what is wrong?

Edit: it is also recognized under os x 10. 6. 2

External Hard Drive Unreadable

I very recently ran into a major problem with my external hard drive. It's a samsung hm120jc inside a usb external enclosure which i have been using for a few years as a backup and additional storage device.

Today i plugged it into my computer to transfer some files when it told me that i needed to format the disk in order to use it. There was a single ntfs partition on the disk containing about 100gb (out of 120gb) of mixed data, some of which are very important.

I did some googling and found the testdisk program. I ran it and it managed to find the partition and seemed to be able to detect all my files within. I tried to have it repair my partition tables to no avail. Going into the file system options it showed that the boot sector was "ok" as well. I also installed the free tool recuva from the makers of ccleaner, which also seemed to be able to find my data.

As said before, it tells me i need to format the disk whenever i plug it in. Also, double clicking on it in my computer brings up an error saying the disk is corrupt and unreadable. The disk management utility shows all 120 (113) gb free and in the raw format (huh?). The same shows when plugging it into other computers.

Before i go any further, i'd like all your opinions. As i said, the data is important and must be recovered if there is a way to (cost-free if possible ). What should my next step be? Can the drive be restored without formatting or using data recovery software? If i need data recovery software, what are the best free options?

Authenticate External Hard Drive

I have a western digital my book external hard drive that i somehow blocked myself from being able to access my stored files. I can go through the individual files, open the properties, go to the security tab, change the ownership, then allow myself access, but i have thousand of files on there and it would take me a lifetime that way.

I called wd support and was told that i needed to contact support.microsoft.com and ask them how to "authenticate my external hard drive" to regain access to the entire hard drive at one time. Since it's the hard drive that won't let me open the files, i figured it would be something wd should be able to tell me how to do, but at their instruction, i'm turning to microsoft for help. Can anyone help?

External Hard Drive Not Recognised

I bought an asus intel pentium with window 7 installed - i also had comodo but changed to avg - as the former blocked everything coming to my computer. Although the computer recognizes that i have attached a wd external hard drive or cruzer usb stick - it does not let me open it. In addition it does asks me repeatedly to back up my computer, but then does not recognize my dvd burner. Never had these problems before - my old dell is still working fine and recognizes all the external apparatus.

External Hard Drive Cannot Be Read

I'm using a maxtor (now seagate) external hard drive. I've had it less than 6 months and all was fine until i installed windows 7. When my computer tries to read the data (all my backups and personal files!) A message comes up which says i need to format the external hard drive. I'm sure if i do this i will lose all my data. I've emailed maxtor (seagate) about the problem but had no reply.

I've tried turning the computer off with it plugged in, unplugged it after restart. Didn't work. I've unplugged it when the computer is on, restarted my computer; then unplugged it and plugged it in again. Didn't work. How on earth can i retrieve all my data? Please can someone advise me?
