Program Used In Win 7 To Open Zip Files

Downloaded zip files. Accidentally tried to "open with" windows photo viewer. All zip files changed. Can't find what program to use as default for the zip files now. Tried several that were listed with in "open with", but didn't work, and when i browsed, i didn't know what to try. Can anyone help? I have checked out the control panel default settings, but i don't know which one to use to bring back the zip files, so i can extract them.

A2c Files Downloaded As Zip Files

If you go to alice.org and try to download one of their image files, ie8 changes the extension from a2c to zip making the file unusable unless the user manually changes the file extension.

http://alice.org/index.php?Page=gallery/amusement park/index

In our school network users are not allowed to change the file extension so that does not work. I found that the user when downloading has to change the file type to all files and change the file extension then. This is a bother to have to remember. When i tried with a different browser (chrome) the a2c file was recognized correctly. The computers in my school are laptops running windows xp. At home my desktop runs windows 7 and the problem is there as well. There was no problem with ie7.

Docx Files Downloading As Zip Files

I am having an issue with docx files turning into zip files when i try and download them in ie8. I have done alot of research on this problem and have looked into the 2 main solutions to this problem: 1) set security settings to "open file based on file content, not file extension" to disable  2) check the mime type table on the web server and make sure the office 2007 extensions are added.

The first step i tried and the file was still trying to open as a zip file. The second one i was only able to ask the vendor because the web server does not belong to me, but the vendor said they were able to get the same exact docx file to download as a docx file and everyone on their end was able to. I am able to save the zip file and rename the file extension to docx and open it, but sadly this will not be an acceptable answer.

I've tried adding registry settings to allow it to open with docx files as well with no success.
I am curious if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

How Do I Open A File As A Zip File?

I work with an application that packages files into "zipped folders" (yeah, just zip files), but uses a different file extension. It works exactly like . Gadget (windows gadgets) and . Themepack (windows themes) files work: you can rename them to .zip and open them with the zip viewer.

I want to skip the step of renaming it each time. I want to just associate the files with the zip viewer. In fact i don't need to associate it, just open-with a single time: i know if i can do it once, it will always be an available option on the right-click context menu of the files.

But i can't find which program is associated with zip files. I tried searching the system-32 folder.

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Difference - Program Files And Program Files(x86)

Why are there two program files on my new dell with windows 7 prof? Program files and program files(x86)? Is there a difference? What type of programs go in each?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

.exe Files Will Not Open Normally

.exe files will not open normally, they just give a message saying "choose the program you want to use to open this file" i've seen this problem elsewhere but with a few different recommendations. My windows 7 recently started malfunctioning recently after apparently contracting several viruses - i think i've gotten rid of most of the problems by downloading the free version of avg, which was recommended to me by a friend. However, two problems remain:

1. Internet explorer keeps opening erratically and immediately accessing strange websites (i'm sure this is some sort of malware still on my computer). My internet explorer folder won't delete, either (it says i need "permission from trustedinstaller to make changes to this folder").

2. I can't open .exe files normally. Every time i try to (either by double clicking an icon or from the start menu) i get an "open with" window, prompting me to pick an application to open the .exe file with. I can still open applications if i right-click on them and select "run as administrator", but something is still obviously wrong and i'm hoping someone knows what might be happening so they can help.

Oh, and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (where the "safely eject hardware" button usually is") is gone.

Cannot Open .jpg Files

It just keeps displaying "loading" but it never loads. It worked fine yesterday. I have a toshiba laptop with windows 7 home premium. It alternates between working fine and having problems. I'm wondering if it has something to do with a lexmark printer i have been trying to get to work properly. I decided to just uninstal it for now but strange things have been happening ever since. I would like to just restore to a restore point but i am unable to do that as well. I get an error message and a suggestion that my virus program may be interfering.

I disabled it but it still will not restore. I was unable to play movies, i had the problem where it would just display a still of the movie. I just decided to get a different movie viewer. Sometimes wmp works though. The other one always works. I got another picture viewer but i would really like to find out whats wrong here. The problems are starting to pile up.

Choosing A Program To Open A File

I was opening a file and right clicked to open the file, it was a picture file, and used the, "open with. " Command. I selected a program and left the check box below to have that program be the selected program for this kind of file, and all of my files from documents and other non-picture files changed to the particular program icon. All of the taskbar's pinned files/programs like control panel and the file library were all changed to be open by this particular program. It was the windows photo viewer.

I had to restore my computer in order to get it back to using the files in their normal programs. Even my files and programs on the start menu changed. I attempted to change one program back to its original state and left the box checked again, it then changed all my files and programs to this other program. How can i correct this problem so when i have a file i want to use with a certain program i can make that particular program the default but without changing all my other files and programs?

Cannot Open 64-bit Adobe Program

I bought a new dell xps 8100 64 bit machine. Then i installed my adobe cs4 and lightroom 2. Neither one will open. I am getting run around from dell and adobe techs. Both says its the others problem. Both want me to spent an additional 200 dollars, for software help, after spending 1000 on computer and 1400 for adobe products. I have used both on my old win xp system with no problems ever.

Now buy this great new high tech computer, 64 bit, and now can not use either program. Has anyone else experience a problem with this issue? If so, have you resolved it? Please help if you can. I have already spent over 5 hours on telephone between the two companies since i received my new computer 3 days ago.

Unable To Open Encrypted Files

Ok, here's my situation:- my pc came with windows xp, and i encrypted some files on it. - After a couple of years, i started getting errors that indicated the drive may be going bad. - I bought a new drive, and copied all of my data there, including the encrypted files. - Soon after, i installed windows 7 rc on the new drive, and then windows 7 home edition about 8 months later. - All this time i was able to open the encrypted files on both drives (the old drive with the original files, and the new drive with the copies). - Well, the old drive finally failed and, unfortunately, the system was still booting from that drive.

So now i had a good windows 7 installation on the new drive without a boot sector. - So, i booted with my windows 7 cd, and the only option i had was to install a new version of windows. - Now i can no longer open my encrypted files (copies on the new drive) even though my user name and password are still the same. Were the 'keys' only stored on the old drive that died ?

Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.

Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File

In my open with window the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" tick box is greyed out. I have a couple of programs on my w7 (64-bit) pc that will not automatically open when i click on a file associated with them. For example, i have a file which was created in onenote 2003.

When i want to open this file, i double click it and instead of onenote 2003 just loading and opening the file, the open with window comes up asking me to choose a program to run this file. I manually choose onenote 2003 and then try to tick the box opposite "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". But this is greyed out for some reason. And so every time i want to look at that file in onenote 2003 i have to go though this same manual process to select that program to view it.

Default Program / Icon Open Up Issue

My sister recently received an hp notebook as a gift with windows 7 installed on it out of the box. For the first few weeks it was running fine and then sometime last week while uploading pictures from her digital camera on the default program, it did something to where all the icons on the desktop and the start menu are the microsoft office picture manager icon. Whenever you click any icon, say for google chrome, or itunes, it will open up picture manager. The only icons ive been able to get anywhere with have been the system tools and i am not really sure what to uninstall to make the default program go away.

Can't Open Downloads Folder, File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". As far as i can tell, all my other folders open up fine. Last thing i did was trying to download some software that would gradually turn my volume down so that i could fall asleep to it. It didn't work (older software, seemed like it wasn't compatible with windows 7) so i deleted the application and the installer which were located in my downloads folder.
