Moving Drive With Win 7 To Backup Computer Without Activation

I would like to come up with a way to provide a full backup computer to my customers (offline, process control application). Currently doing this with winxp and a hot-swap raid-1 enclosure. If anything in computer1 dies, can quickly move the cables and the drive over to computer2, boot up and keep running. Now moving to windows 7, more strict activation issues. Getting a separate windows license for each computer is not a problem, but how to either change the license key easily after the swap, or avoid activation altogether?

Typical system is offline, possibly abroad and would like to make the fail-over as easy as possibly for customers. Currently using oem license but open to other ideas. Have tested with retail copy of windows 7 pro and get 3-days to activate after moving to backup computer, same as oem. Would volume licensing help me here? Other ideas?

Backup And Restore Vs External Hard Drive

I have upgraded from vista ultimate to 7. I also needed to change out my 150gb hdd for a 500gb hdd. I thought the cool thing to do would be to install 7 and all my softwareon the old drive, make a backup/image of that drive onto a spare external drive, install the new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

My plan worked to perfection with one fatal flaw. The image only created 150gb of usable space on my 500gb hdd. So i reinstalled the original 150gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd into an external drive box with usb connection. The computer immediately recognized the 500gb hdd but when i look for it on computer, it won't show up.

Neither will my other external hdd's. I have tried on different usb ports and usb cables and the device manager says that all usb devices are operational. Dell precision m4300, 4gb memory, 2. 50 gh, t9300 core 2 duo 32 bit system. Extra credit: can anyone tell me why the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon won't work? Double clicking and right mouse click have no affect.

Empty Backup Folder On External Hard Drive

This is regarding windows 7 home premium. I recently discovered the files created on my external hard drive by windows automated backup utility are empty. The backup utility continues to apparently create backups: the external drive lights up to indicate activity when the "backup in progress" symbol appears in the notification area of the taskbar.control panel>system and security>backup and restore shows a backup size of 92. 24 gb and verifies the backup location as the external drive.

The external drive itself appears to be working fine: i can move other files, such as outlook backups, to the drive and verify their file size. There are two backup-related file folders on the external drive, one with the name of the computer and the other named windowsimagebackup, which was created about two minutes after the first. But both are empty.

Restore Windows Using Backup After Completely Reformat Hard Drive

If i back up the system, then completely wipe and reformat the hard drive, will i be able to somehow restore windows using the backup, with all the software intact (aka subscriptions etc. ). Also how do i restore if the memory is 100% wiped clean? Basically i have an acer laptop with a stupid unaccessible hard-drive partition with the vista acer backup on it.

I am currently running the w7 rc and am about to upgrade to w7, there is also a vista dual-boot i will erase at the same time. I have mcafee and powerdvd subscriptions on the rc. Now when i upgrade the rc to w7 directly these subscriptions will carry over, and that's wonderful, however i still have the stupid partition problem wasting hdd space. As i understand the only way to get rid of it is a full hdd reformat, which wipes the memory. My plan is to backup the new w7 account to an external hdd, thats a ful backup of everything, perform the reformat, and somehow get the backup back onto the hdd. Only there's no windows software to run the recovery.

So, my question's are:
How do i get the backup onto the computer after the wipe, considering there is no software to read it (would i need to get†microsoft†to re-activate the product key)?
If i can somehow get all this done will the subscriptions still work?
Quite simply - is there an easier way of sorting all this out?

Usb Hard Drive Does Not Appear In My Computer

I have an ads tech external hard drive that allows one to put any regular hd in the case and connect it to the pc via usb. My 2-week-old machine has windows7 running. After successfully accessing and removing all data on a hd using the usb external, i removed it from the computer, and placed another hd inside the usb case. Upon reconnecting, win7 recognizes that a usb device is being connected.

Windows also lists the device in the device manager and it is listed under devices and printers (from the control panel). Upon attempting to troubleshoot the device, i'm told that no problem can be identified. After rebooting with the device attached and unattached, it still does not appear in the list of hard drives in my computer.

Hard Drive In Device Manager Can't Be Seen By Computer

Hard drive in "device manager" can't be seen by "computer". I installed a hard drive from a mac as a backup expecting that i could reformat it and it would all work. But, as far as i know, i need to be able to "see" it in computer in order to reformat it. It does show up in device manager. I uninstalled it, rebooted, and it reinstalled automatically, like it should. Still doesn't solve the problem.

Ide Hard Drive (usb 2.0) Not Recognized At Computer Startup

Ide hard drive in external enclosure (usb 2. 0) not recognized by windows 7 at computer startup, but recognized if it is rebooted after windows 7 is done loading. I have a western digital 500gb pata (ide) hard drive in an enclosure. I leave the enclosure on at all times since it has a cooling fan.

However, if for whatever reason i need to reboot my system, windows 7 never recognizes†this†drive unless†i turn off and on my enclosure. Once i reboot my enclosure, windows 7 recognizes the drive and tries to autoplay. I would like w7 to recognize my drive at startup so that i don't have to reboot my enclosure every time i reboot my computer. What can†i do to fix this?†

Secondary Hard Drive Not Appearing As Option To "setup Backup"

Secondary hard drive not appearing as an option to "set up backup". I recently got a computer with windows 7 home. I have 500 gb western digital wd800jd-75hka1 ata hard drive that i installed in my new computer out of my previous one. I did all the necessary things to install it as a fully functioning secondary hdd. From the my computer window, it shows up, i can access it's files, it works perfect, even listing it as a hard drive.

However, when i go to set up a backup, which is the primary reason i wanted it in this computer, it doesn't show up as an option to backup. The only available back up destinations listed are the self created "recovery e:"and my dvd-rw drive. I want my wd d:!

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Backup Onto A Second External Drive

I want a second backup on a second external drive (call it "drive2"), so i'd like to either #1) copy every now and again drive1's daily backup file to drive2, or, #2) perform an occasional separate backup directly onto drive2. I'm confused about issues with both approaches. Original title: i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches. With approach i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches.

#1, windows doesn't permit me to just drag the backup file icon from drive1 to drive2; instead, i have to open the file and then copy itsunderlyingbackup set files, at the end of which iím always asked about merging a folder (see graphic at† http://www.Box.net/shared/ykq0nikfqo): do i answer yes or no? (This merge question comes up even when copying just a single backup set file. ) And, can i drag over to drive2 just the most recent backup set file, or does the backup program update older backup set files when it runs, meaning that i would have to copyeverybackup set file anytime i copy between drive1 and drive2?†

With approach #2, i can change settings within the backup program and choose drive2 as the destination, but does that affect theexistingbackup set (which i want to continue using) by creating an incremental backup file in the new destination, or does the backup program interpret a new destination as "create a totally new backup file from scratch on that new destination"? (With xp's ntbackup, you could create different "jobs" and different . Bkf files; does windows 7 backup offer a similar choice?)
