Display Settings Lost After Reboot

I run multiple displays on my ati radeon hd4600 graphics card, but am forced to reconfigure it each time after rebooting. This is to say that rebooting resets me to a single display. I verified through device manager that i have the latest driver available. I also downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the amd/ati site; this did not fix the problem.

I verified that the problem is not specific to my account, as the same thing happens with a test account i created. I ran msconfig and tried "diagnostic startup" (no startup items or system service) and this did not fix the problem.

Display Power Settings Are Not Saved

Power settings won't stay as saved - display setting always reverts to 3 minutes after re-boot. Maybe i don't yet understand how the new windows 7 works, but i can't seem to set my power settings and have them stay there. I've set them to turn off the display after 15 minutes and put the computer to sleep at 30 minutes. But when i re-boot the machine, the display setting always reverts from 15 minutes to 3 minutes. Is there any way to save these settings and have them stay as saved?

Saving Display Settings And Monitor Position

I currently am running two nvidia graphics cards with 4 displays. I have an 8800gtx running my primary and my tv in the other room. These two displays are cloned and used strictly as a primary display. I then am running a gt220 with my other two displays as extended desktops. One on the left of the primary and one on the right. I have the displays set up correctly and working in the display settings but when i restart, the extended monitors are not oriented to split the main screen. So i have to go back in to the display settings every time and change their positions. I have the latest nvidia drivers installed.

Once again

Extended - primary / primary - extended

(Gt220)      (8800gtx)           (gt220)

I just need a way to save this setup so that i dont have to change it every time i startup or restart. I wouldn't even mind if i could have a script that i could run on startup that would set it to these positions.

Command Prompt Does Not Display Lan Settings

For a college assignment i have to go to the command prompt and type in 'ipconfig/all'. From there i should be able to see the host name, mac address, default gateway, subnet mask, etc, however. This information does not show. Its either all zeros (in the case of the address)  or its just not there at all. I can go into the network connections and view these details there. But they will not show in the command prompt. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with geeksquad just for the guy to tell me "i dont know what to tell you". Does anyone have any ideas?  This is rather troublesome considering a lot of my work has to consist of accurate screen shots of the command prompt. Thanks in advance!

Lost X64-based Display System After Optional Updates

I accepted "optional" updates and lost my x64-based display system. Was left with only a x32-based system. How do i get my x64 back without reloading hard drive and losing data? I used windows updates to accept "optional" updates to nvidia -display-geforce g105m; and atheros-network-atheros ar8131 pci-e pci-e gigabit ethernet controller. Afterwards, the screen popped up super large and i had adjust screen resolution. It only allowed me to adjust it to 32-bit resolution. 64-bit was no longer available. When i checked my system, the x64-based display system had disappeared. I now only have a x32-based system.

How do i get my x64 back without having to completely reload the back up disk and lose my data?  This happened about a week before as well, i had taken it in to the "geeks" who had a special disk and were able to just load the video part of the back up disk. I don't want to have to do this every week when there is a new update or, lesson learned, never download an optional update again. Any other options?

Display Problem With Display Driver When Multitasking

Just installed windows 7 home 64 bit a few weeks ago. I have been having a problem with my display driver. The screed flashes and turns black and then comes back on with a message in the lower right of the screen that reads "display driver stopped responding but has recovered". I have attempted to download and install a driver from amd web site, which is supposed to be the correct driver. When i attempt to install this driver my computer restarts because of a corrupted driver. Windows won't let me install the driver that is supposed to be the correct one. The graphics card is a ati hd3470. How do i fix?

Also i am missing other drivers for my fitjitsu lifebook a6220 like audio for hdmi output and many more. All was working fine with windows vista, now im missing several utility drivers i called fujitsu they say they are waiting on microsoft! If windows 7 was to be released all parties should have been sent a fix with all drivers not wait for the consumer to purchase windows 7 and have to deal with all the problems!

Power Options Page Doesn't Display "dim The Display" Option

I just installed windows 7 on my laptop and the power options page doesn't display a "dim the display" option, nor do the keyboard commands to dim the display do anything. I am running a lenovo g530 machine and there does not seem to be driver support for windows 7 on their support page. However i downloaded the mobile intel 45 chipset graphics driver for windows 7 and i downloaded the newest bios update; nether seemed to solve the problem.

Spontaneous Reboot

My problem seems similar to a few previous posts, but not identical. It's simply this: after a period of use, my pc reboots itself. The period can be anything between five minutes and maybe an hour. This seems to have been happening since i upgraded from two to four gb of ram (both the bios and windows are recognizing the amount of memory correctly).

System is a dell xps-710, maybe two years old. Os is win 7 pro (32 bit); ram (as above) is 4gb; video is nvidia geforce 7900gtx; sound is soundblaster x-fi. As far as i can tell i have the most recent drivers, and device manager reports no problems.

And here's an odd side-effect: not every time but often enough, when the pc restarts it's 'forgotten' some of my cookies, notably my igoogle preferences.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions leading to a solution.

After Reboot Printer Will Not Print

I am with the guy about the troubleshooter not working half the time. I have a lexmark z715 printer. Installed windows 7 on a new partition on a new hard-drive fresh and it detected the printer and downloaded a driver that worked and all was fine. 2 days later i shut down the computer and didn't use it for a day.

Come back online and print spooler quit working. Ok looked in diagnostics and it says is running and on automatic. Did a complete unistall of the lexmark software and that hung for 4 hours till i shut it down. So manually i went in and deleted anything associated with lexmark registry included.

Next day i thought i would give it another try so i restart computer and do a search and it finds the printer and installs a lexmark z700-900 p700-900 driver and software from the windows update sight. Printer shows up and test page prints just like it should. I do a test and print off a microsoft word file and all is good. Reboot. Now i can see the printer. Can adjust the printer properties. Yet everything i send to the printer flashes in the print queqe for a sec and deletes saying it was printed. The size of these files are 8 bytes.

I am on a dual boot system
I have windows xp installed on a c drive.
I have a backupdrive d.
I have a backup partition on c called h.
I have a tetrabyte hard drive called g where windows 7 is installed.
I have a q9650 processor with 4 gig s of ram
I have a 9800gtx+ 1 gig video card.

I can print in xp fine the printer is hooked to the usb and it turns on and prints well.
In windows 7 and in windows xp when i shut the computer down the printer shuts off also.

I have installed the windows xp driver which actually worked also till reboot. I have installed the windows vista driver that is recommended from the updater and it would not even see the printer. I after cleaning out the registry again get windows update to find that driver and it worked until reboot and at least i can still communicate with the printer.

But still cannot print. Also want to add that ive spent a good 8 hours on this researching and this seems to be an issue with alot of people. Especially with windows 7 recognizing supposedly compatible devices. Seems someone was over optimistic or manufacturers deceived in placing their equipment on the list.

Oh also i have microsoft office installed and microsoft outlook which printed fine also before reboot. I am currently looking through the forums for any other things to do. I am figuring that probably going to have to upgrade my printer due to fact that it would only cost me 50 bucks more than ink for this one. But i should not have to if its on compatible list.

Desktop Items Gone After Reboot

So i came home from work, and when i unlocked my computer it was mentioning something about damaged section on one of my 1tb hdd's. Windows 7 asked for reboot, so i accepted. Pc rebooted and a black screen came up and started to repair something. After 5-6 steps done pc rebooted again and log in screen popped up. After that i logged in and pc fully booted i noticed that my desktop items wore missing. Win 7 asked for recovery, so i accepted that, hoping it would solve my problems. After 10 min, and the recovery done i rebooted my pc.

Pc wore fully booted and icons are still missing.
I tried some trouble shooting, and after 2hr's of reading and clicking in win 7 i gave up.

I can't left click on desktop to multiple mark ether.

I cant find anything wrong, and nether can the troubleshooting program.

I have right clicked my desktop > personalize > change desktop items.
They're all marked in the box.
I have tried to end explorer.exe and boot it up again.
I tried to run backup image.

And nothing seems to help me.
Win 7 is installed on a 150 gb 7200 rpm hdd.
It's a clean hdd with only win 7 installed on it.

From my prospective i have to format c: and do a clean install.

I'll add a picture of my desktop.

Sudden Slow Reboot

I have been 'optimizing' windows 7 (using msconfig, stopping non microsoft services, uninstalling 'bloatwear' etc). The laptop rebooted consistently within 55 seconds. Then all of a sudden it's over 2 minutes. Thinking i had broken something by constant tweaking i eventually did a complete reinstall booting from the installation cd, reinstalled all the programs i wanted (firefox, ccleaner, avg, eve and a couple of adobe products). All was fine - really fast reboot until windows finds the time to install all the updates (22 of them) released since my windows installation dvd was produced. It seems to be this update that suddenly more than doubles the reboot time. Any suggestions? I can list the updates if necessary.

No Internet Access At Reboot

I installed windows 7 home. I have a netgear wireless home router wgt624v. 3 everything was working fine after setting up router. But when i reboot, it loses the router. I look under network before the reboot i see residential gateway under network infrastructure. And under network and sharing center i see netgear home under active networks. After reboot under network sharing center i see unidentified network along with netgear home network. To resolve this connection i have to disable then enable the network adapter. Then everything gets identified and i get access to the internet. I am at a total loss on what to do to fix this.

Auto Reboot Problem

I have an acer aspire m7720. It has 6gb ram, a 920 intel core i7 and nvidia geforce gt230 with 64-bit windows 7. I have been using it for 6 months with no problems but lately, actually just today, it started to restart automatically after a few minutes. Sometimes it doesn't even reach the user login page and it will restart. The problem has gotten slightly better, i think, as it only restarts every hour or so now.

I don't think theres a blue screen of death, but i may be wrong, as i have already disabled the 'autorestart in the case of a system failure' option.

Looping Reboot After Upgrade

My windows vista went through an automatic upgrade last week. After installing the upgrade, i was required to reboot the machine in order finish the installation. When the machine reboots, it will show the microsoft logo and then come up with a screen stating that it is completing the installation. After approximately 10 seconds, it will restart the machine and go through the process again. It only stopped when i shut the machine off.

I have been able to get to a dos prompt and can access the hard drive so the hardware appears okay. However, when i try a system recovery, it will say it cannot find a recovery prior to when the upgrade was installed. Any suggestions on what i can do to try to short of reformatting the entire hard drive or reinstalling vista?

Update Unprompted Reboot

I run windows 7 prof. On my laptop and yesterday, the windows update service downloaded and partially installed some security updates. Then it asked me to save my work and reboot. I declined and delayed the notification by 4 hours. I continued doing this again and again and at the end of the day i put the laptop in hibernation. The next day (today) i turned it on again and continued my work for about ten minutes. Then all of the running applications closed themselves automatically, throwing all the unsaved documents away, after what the laptop automatically rebooted and finished installing the updates.

How on earth could this be possible?! Do i look like a slave of my os? I want to reboot my laptop whenever >i< want to, not whenever microsoft wants to!

What's going on and how can i fix this?
Thanks and sorry for my crappy english.

(By the way - i wanted to share my problem with the microsoft's technical support, so i went to the ms website, where i found out i just can't! The only option offered to me was to call them, but with a small note telling me they may want me to pay for it! What?! I've got the os legally - why would i have to pay if i wanted it to do its job properly?!)

Losing Setting On Reboot

I have been getting windows 7 all installed and set up over the last few days. Did a clean install on a box that had xp. At some point today, windows 7 started losing a lot of my personal setting on every reboot. I have no idea if i flipped a setting that would do this or if something is scrooged. Examples of what is lost are my settings in ie and firefox (i use both browser as required by my job). The customization of the tool bars and which ones are displayed are all reset to defaults for both browsers on reboot. Also i lose all of my saved id/password for various web sites. I am not sure what all else is being lost, but do any of you have an idea of what might cause this?

Splash Screen To Immediate Reboot

Have a machine running windows 7 enterprise 64-bit. After waking from sleep, computer froze, and needed a power cycle to reboot. Windows tries to boot, and during splash, a brief flash (<<1 second) and back to post. Next boot, hit f8, and no option for safe mode, just recovery console. Claims a volume corruption, but is unable to repair. Using cmd line, run fdisk/chkdisk and it says everything is fine.

Reboot, goes again in recovery console, claims volume corruption, can't fix. Also to note are none of my system images or restore points are visible. Boot from cd, run windows recovery environment, fixmbr and all that jazz, and it gives no errors. Reboot, windows splash, fast bsod, and back to post. Pressing f8 never gets me to safemode options, only the recovery console, which claims volume corruption.

Remove drive, and attach it as an external device on another machine, run chkdsk, scans, you name it, all show up as perfect. Run western digital diagnostics on the drive, finds no errors. Stick the drive in an external hd hardware checker (supersonix), and also shows up as perfect. Drive back as boot drive, either boots to recovery console - which reports un-fixable volume corruption, or normally, which gives the splash screen to post error.

No error logs are written, or at least they are not saved when i browse through the disk. The video card is an nvidia, using the ms update supplied drivers. Being that i never have the option to boot in safe mode, and f8 takes me only to the recovery console, is there anyway i can boot the normal installation with limited drivers? Or does anyone have any good suggestions to try?

Ip Address Changes On Router Reboot

Running windows 7 cabled to wireless router. Occasionally broadband "drops out" and when rebooting router ip address for wireless printer (epson stylus office tx610fw) changes form 10. 1. 1. 2   to 10. 1. 1. Something depending on how many laptops are connected. As a result i have to go into control panel, hardware & sound select the printer then via 'settings' select the printer and add it manually with new ip address. Obviously irritating as other family members, despite printed instructions, cannot manage it. Please, is there anyway to 'lock' the ip address so it doesn't change?

Installation Reboot Loop

So after having a billion problems with my laptop after the first install of win7 home (its a "free upgrade" version for the new asus i bought before win7 came out) i started to just ignore my computers problems. Today i bought the sims 3 ambitions and tried to install it. It didn't work, so i tried to uninstall all sims versions to reinstall. The computer wouldn't let me uninstall it.

So i figured maybe i didn't upgrade win7 the right way, popped in the disk again and waited 2 1/2 hours (install where it supposedly keeps your files) to find out that "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed.

To install windows, click "ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation. "So i did. I clicked ok and waited. All it does now is say "setup will continue after restarting your computer" then it restarts and says "press any key to boot from cd or dvd" then takes me to a boot manager with windows 7 or windows setup rollback, automatically chooses for me.

Then the starting windows page comes up, then goes to "setup is starting services" and it glitches a bit, then straight back to the error message above. How can i fix this?! Im close to throwing my laptop. At least it kind of worked before and definitely worked before windows 7!

Upgrade Endless Reboot

I bought a satellite l505-s5971 running windows vista 64 about 3 mo ago. I tried upgrading myself on saturday and have entered the endless loop reboot cyclone mentioned across the web. Basically, the upgrade went fine, the computer restarted and a message said something to the extent that windows 7 did not load properly and the computer was reverting to vista and then it restarts and repeats this message to infinity.

I do not have a bootable vista cd to do this fix:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974078. And don't know how to get into windowsre for this fix but tried it anyways in regular command prompt (see below):http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7install/thread/02fecb91-462a-4d7a-9dad-d38f053ab5.

So i've made some poor choices:
No recovery disks
No "windows vista media" assuming those are bootable cds
No backup of my files

I have tried:

1. Pressing f12, i can boot windows 7 (asks me to restart, dead end)  or windows setup rollback which re-enters the reboot loop. Starting in safemode, low res, etc does nothing different.

2. I can also enter the toshiba recovery system where, if i made a recovery disk or backups, i could start all over just fine. I can also enter the command prompt where i have tooled around my harddrive and found none of my files (hopefully they are partitioned elsewhere?). I have looked at bcdedit and am too scared/inexperienced to change anything but it says i can boot windows 7 and windows setup rollback (see above)

3. I tried booting from the "upgrade" cd provided and am prompted that if i want to custom install i may (but my files will be wiped) in a clean install, or i should restart and run the executable as if i could still get to the windows desktop.

4. Tried the command prompt file length shortening trick just within the toshiba recovery system (second link above) but command prompt said i had syntax error. The only bad folder was under my user name i had 9 levels of "temporary internet files" folders which was too long.

Questions:

1. Is there a command prompt way i can fool vista back into booting itself up as is, so that i may backup my files then do a clean/custom upgrade?

2. Can i boot from the upgrade cd and run windowsre recovery and do the command prompt file length shortening trick?

Addition:before install, i ran microsofts upgrade assistant and toshibas. All the toshiba stuff uninstalled and reinstalled fine. I think i heeded most of the microsoft advice if not all. I run avast antivirus (didn't turn it off before upgrading, i gather from other messages this is probably part of the problem).

I did run the startup repair and it says i have no os installed (again troubling me that my c is wiped out already? Since i cant find all my music and stuff using command prompt). I did run the memory diagnostic tool (no errors). I cant run the recovery wizard, pc restore, or system restore because i have no cds.

Reboot Loop On Install

I'm trying to install win 7 home premium on a new pc, specs: proc: core i5 760 2. 80ghz lga1156mb: asus p7h55d-m pro intel h55 lga 1156 (pcx/vga/dzw/glan/sata/ddr3) matxram: kingston hyperx khx1333c9d3k2/4ghd:hdd seagate 1tb st31000528as sata ii 32mb

The problem is that just after the first splash screen, either the pc reboots, or with mouse input, attempts to show the tos window, but on clicking the check-box just reverts to the same tos window. Left without clicking, it reboots. I would be very grateful for assistance.

First Reboot During Installation Fails

When i try to install win 7, the following happens: the installation dvd runs fine. It goes through the copying windows files and expanding alright and installs features and updates. Then the reboot fails. I only get a blinking cursor, which suggests that the boot doesn't start at all. Installing ubuntu on the same disk works fine, so the disk itself seems o. K. I've tried a number of things as indicated below, but so far no success. Please help! Otherwise i've wasted my money buying windows 7.

System overview: amd sempron 3000+ 1. 8ghz; 1. 5gb ram, nvidia geforce fx5200 td 128 (agp); hard drive: 250gb sata maxtor (this drive is win7 compatible according to microsoft).
Things i've tried but didn't solve the problem:

- I've run the system repair tool from the dvd. It detects the win7 os on the hard disk. And i can see that the files are indeed present on the disk. The function startup repair doesn't detect any problem. One of the logs reads "boot status indicates that the os booted successfully".

- Use a different video card: ati radeon hd 2600xt 256 mb (agp).

- Try to install on a different drive (160 gb pata seagate), and with different partitioning (1 partition whole disk, or on 1 of 2 partitions on the disk).

- Using ps/2 mouse en keyboard connectors instead of usb.

- Change some of the bios settings, like disabling usb mouse / keyboard and disabling floppy drive support (fdc controller) is there anything else that might work?

Win 7 Changes Theme During Reboot

I run windows 7 home premium 64x on a dell inspiron 1545, purchased within the last six months. Over the past week, each time i turn on the computer and log in, the theme is changed. My background stays the same (it is one of the default windows ones), while the window color changes, and instead of aero, i have the basic windows running. Another thing is that it says that the laptop is connected to a modem for internet, instead of the wireless, where it should be connecting.

My widgets take some time to appear on the desktop as well. Also, whenever i awake the computer from sleep, or just open firefox after initial start, it takes five minutes to open instead of what used to be seconds. For this to completely change back to my original performance, it takes about
An hour, which i find ridiculous for a start up of a computer that is less than six months old. Are there any known was to fix this, or is it just a bug? Or is it a hardware problem and should i contact dell?

Bsod - Programs Not Working On Reboot

I used to have a 9800gt in my pc, and i upgraded to a hd5770 yesterday. Everything was working fine and i was very happily playing battlefield bad company 2, dawn of war 2 and team fortress 2. I had no problems whatsoever. I then overclocked my gpu, and i got it stable at 940/1370 without putting up the voltage. Everything worked perfectly fine. I started up my computer this morning and i bsoded just after getting to desktop.

When i started back up again, several things weren't working. I got tons of errors entitled "wermgr.exe" whenever i tried doing anything. I tried opening steam, but it wouldn't open. The process was there in task manager but there weren't any windows or a system tray icon. Finally, i went online using google chrome and a video crashed the flash plug-in before it even started playing.

At first i thought this might have been a flash problem, but i think a html5 video crashed as well, and other flash content remained responsive after the video became unresponsive. I tried playing bfbc2 (one of the games i hadn't bought on steam) and it worked absolutely fine. I uninstalled all of the games and programs that i had installed yesterday in case there was a conflict, and i have undone all gpu overclocks. I have rebooted several times. I have tried re-installing steam and google chrome.

Usb Drive Not Recognized After Reboot

I have a windows 7 64-bit system. I connected my maxtor 500gb usb drive while the pc was on and it recognized the drive using the default windows driver. Seagate, which owns maxtor, does not have a 64 bit driver for this drive. Seagate and microsoft say the drive should work with the windows driver. It was working beautifully.

Then i re-booted my system. Upon windows re-start, the drive came up as "usb device not recognized". In device manager it is a yellow icon next to "unknown device". I removed the usb cable and re-plugged it to no avail. I then removed the drive's power cord and plugged it back in. The drive was instantly recognized again.

What is happening on a re-boot to mess up the usb connection? How can this be resolved? I don't want to have to pull the power cord on every re-boot.

No Taskbar Or Mouse Pointer On Reboot

I have repeatedly attempted to install win 7 home professional on my intel i7 machine with an ati radeon 4870 graphics card. Many times on rebooting the screen appears normal but there is no taskbar or mouse pointer. At other times, the computer booted normally and allowed me to install programs. Now i am frozen out at described above. I suspect a driver conflict, since i can still boot in safe mode with a normal taskbar and desktop icons.

My machine did pass the windows 7 upgrade advisor test and has 12g of ram.

Programs Stop Working Until Reboot

Ever since i installed windows 7, i've had issues with programs running. Everything works fine until a certain point, where programs stop responding (such as steam and itunes). Also, i can't watch videos (such as youtube videos) or stream music without firefox or internet explorer freezing, causing me to restart the browser, avoiding videos and music in the process.

The only way to fix this issue is by restarting my laptop.
Even then, i don't know when this issue may arise again.
Sometimes, it affects me after a few days, sometimes within a few minutes.

Perhaps something is triggering it. I'm not sure what it is, though. Currently, i'm using windows 7 home premium. I upgraded from windows vista home premium. Is there any way to fix this issue? I would prefer not to do a clean install unless it is truly necessary.

Upon Reboot External Drives Are Formatted

After adding an external driver for data and backup, i partitioned the 300gb sata drive into two primary partitions and then formatted. I copied data onto each drive. I then changed the drive letters from e & f to m & n using "disk management". Then i used device manager, diskdrives, scan for drives to update. This was successful and my data was present.

After rebooting, a serious problem appeared - m: is not accessible and the volume does contain recognized file system and please make sure all the required drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted. I repeated the process with the same bad results. This is a sata drive attached to the controller via a backplate. Both of the partitions show:

(M:) and (n:) (no name)
146/151 gb raw
Healthy (primary partition)
Any ideas? /Howardj
