Network File Copy Hangs When Device List Changes

This is a problem with two parts.

Part 1: the first is that if i start a copy of a large file from a network drive to a local disk, and then, whilst that copy is happening, dismount a drive such as a usb drive, then there is a good chance that the copy will stall and never complete. The copy progress dialog remains, and continues to animate, however the actual copy process stops. This has happened ever since i installed win7 ultimate, and after this happens the only way out is to press the reset button. This leads me into the second part.

Part 2: once the copy has stalled, there is no way to cancel it, or to kill the process doing the copy. In the past, with winxp, i would use task manager to kill explorer.exe if something like this happened, but killing this "hung" copy seems to be beyond task manager with win7. From my reading, the act of killing a process is more of a request with win7 whereas with winxp it was a command
.
I have tried to use the taskkill from within a command prompt to kill the hung process. Taskkill reports success, however the hung process remains, as does the copy progress dialog. My last resort is to restart the pc, but when i do this, i get a warning about having to force the process to die. I accept the warning and tell it to do so, but the pc never, ever, ever restarts. My only option now is to press the reset button. This problem has been here since win7 was released. I'd like to see a solution.

1. The copy process should not hang, or if it depends on a stable device list, then the dismount should be forced to wait.

2. If i am an administrator, i should be able to force any process to die.

Are there any other options?

File Deletion Hangs

I've been having problems with my norton ghost backups, which hang at the very end of the backups, preventing their completion. But now, i think it's not a ghost problem: frequently when i delete a set of files using windows explorer, it's hanging at the end as well. This makes me think it's a deeper problem within the windows file system software. To be explicit, within windows explorer i select a set of files and then right mouse click and delete.

A dialog comes up to track the deletions, file by file. The deletion takes place (they are removed from the display of files), yet the dialog remains - and it will remain indefinitely. I'm suspecting that this failure to cleanly complete simple file operations is related to my hangs in ghost backups.

Setup Hangs - Required Cd/dvd Drive Device Driver Is Missing

Windows 7(ultimate) setup hangs: "a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now. " First my hardware i'm trying to get installed:

Gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p
4 wd5000aaks sata 500gb drives configured as raid5 connected to the sb750

When i start the setup, everything is fine until i hit "install now". Afterwards i'm delighted with 5-10 min. Of "setup is starting", which is followed by "a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now. "

After that i provide the "ahcix64s.sys" which is the proper sb750 raid driver.

I tried the versions from: http://america. Giga-byte.com/filelist/driver/motherboard_driver_raid_amd_sb7xx_bootdisk_win7-64bit.exe

And the one from amd: https://a248. E. Akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2. Ati.com/drivers/whql_sb7xx_raid_vista_3. 1. 1540. 127.zip

Both with the same result: "no device could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media"

Just a side note: i'm installing from a usb flash drive, which has worked already, when i connect a single sata drive in ide mode to the gigabyte sata chip (jmb322); however this is not my desired config, i need to run the system from the raid.

File Organization In List View

I just bought a new computer which has windows 7- i've used xp for the last 8 years on various computers, and there are many things which are extremely jarring. I've managed to figure out, tolerate, or get rid of most of the problematic areas, but i really can't figure this one out.

When i put folders into list view (my default since windows 95), all the files in folders are listing left-to-right (for example, amy.doc, amy2.doc, and boy.doc are all on the top of the file listing, and then the next line starts with boy2.doc, curmudgeon.doc, etc. ). Ever since windows 95, they've listed up-to-down (amy.doc, then amy2.doc directly below that). Sorry if that's confusing- i'm stuck on an old laptop with no imaging or ftp programs, so i can't provide any screen-shots of what i mean.

I can't stand this new way, i can't find anything because of it, and if there is a way to change it to the old way, i would very much love if someone could tell me how.

Network Printer Not Listed On Install List

I have a new lenovo laptop with windows 7 home premium. I have a brother hl-1240 printer available on the network. Windows finds the printer on the network but the driver for it is not listed. I checked with brother and the printer is supported for windows 7. They do not have a driver available for download but say that windows update will get the driver. How do i get windows update to fetch the driver? I don't see this as an update waiting for installation. Will windows eventually find it? Is there a way to make it happen quickly?

Shadow Copy Storage File Issue

I noted the amt of free space on my c: drive drop almost 5gb overnight. I had not installed anything new so it seemed a mystery. Windows did install several critical updates. But nothing equaling 5gb. Knowing a restore point was created before the update i checked under advanced settings system protection. And my setting for max usage is at the 4% (23. 24gb)which is where i set it. However, current usage size is 27. 34gb. The difference certainly explains away most of the 5gb of free space i lost overnight.

I did run the shadow space command from a cmd line to be sure it showed the same information, and, it did. I thought as the space reached its max allotted size that it would drop older restore points and not exceed the allotted space? Since i have the max usage set at 23. 24gb. Then how is it that the current usage is 27. 34gb

Cannot Copy Large File Between Usb Drives

Using windows 7. Have two 1tb ntfs drives and i'm trying to copy a 600g music folder from drive g to drive e. Original file from a third drive was put trough a tag editor and saved to drive g successfully. Have tried copy/paste, drag and drop and send to options. The drag and select show 13k items selected but when released over the intended folder, the copy files window pops up then disappears. Trying break into smaller transfers, was able to transfer half the "a"'s (716 folders) then was only able to transfer single folders.

There are some files where the location was lost in the renaming process or folders that got duplicated which show up as conflicts or options to skip copy or merge two folders in the file copy process at the end of the transfer. I am able to transfer files between the drives, just not this large folder. Western digital support says it's an operating system issue. I acquired the original files from four separate drives  by drag and drop recently with no issues. In compiling all the folders, maybe some errors have crept in, but i can't figure out how to find and eliminate them.

Error When Trying To Copy/paste File From External Drive

I have a new computer with a windows 7 professional 64-bit operating system (500gb drive; 8gb ram). I have two external drives, each of which has a vpc on it. I use the vpcs for training purposes. They are virtually (no pun intended) identical, so one functions as a backup if something goes wrong with the other. One vpc has problems, so i want to overwrite it with the . Vmc and . Vhd files from the other vpc.

I've done this before (on my previous computer, which had windows xp-pro). I successfully copied the . Vmc file and the hard disk 2 . Vhd file, but it won't copy the hard disk 1 . Vhd file. I get an error message (error 0x8007045d) that says there is an i/o device error. How can i fix this so that it will copy the file?

Explorer Will Not Copy 8gb Iso Image File To External Drive

Windows explorer will not copy an 8gb iso image file to an external drive with 185gb of free space says file is too large for the destination file system. I tried copying an 8gb iso image file to an external drive with 185gb of free space and windows explorer keeps giving me the message "file is too large for the destination file system".

Then i tried copying the same file to a separate partition on my hard drive and it worked smoothly. I also tried copying a folder containing the sae content and about the same size and it also copied easily. I don't understand why it will not copy the 8gb iso file. By the way i am using windows 7 ultimate.

File Sharing Network Issues

I have three computers running on my network. 2 computer have windows 7 ultimate 64bit and 1 has windows vista ultimate 32bit. One of the computers is wireless (windows 7) the other 2 are wired. When i first turn on my wireless computer i have full internet and file sharing connections. I continue to have full connections until about about a half hour or until i lock that computer. Then when i start to use that computer again i have internet connections but my file sharing connections are messed up. I only can share files with the windows vista computer. When i try to access and share files with the other windows 7 computer it says windows cannot access.

I try and click diagnose but it cannot find anything wrong with it. Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with this? The only other way i can start to share files with both computers is to either restart my computer or go into computer management disable and then re enable my network card (that seems to work most of the time). My router and wireless card are only about a year and a half old. It is a linksys speed booster brand. Wrt54gs i think.

Error - Unknown Device - Usb Does Not Recognize Garmin Device

Just recently, windows 7 home premium addition has stopped detecting my garmin device. Other usb devices such as my ipod work fine. I was able to get it to detect the garmin only a few times, it would try to install the drivers but the drivers would fail to install. The garmin was working a few weeks ago. Below is a list of everything i have already tried:

Rebooting (after everything i try)
- Turning the computer off and leaving it unplugged overnight
- Completely uninstalling all drivers and software associated with the gamin.
- Manually installing drivers
- Uninstalling the unknown device and doing a search for new hardware
- Uninstalling the unknown device and doing a search for legacy hardware (this produces a device not functioning (code 10) error)
- Reverting back to a restore point before the last windows update

Please, any help would be very appreciated. I am decently computer savvy and have always been able to fix any problems that i have. This one has had me spinning my wheels for days.

Device Malfunctioned Error Code - 43 - Usb Device Not Recognized

I purchased a new computer with windows 7.initially my ipod worked fine with this computer. It still charges the ipod but nothing else. In addition it will not work on my old computer.

1. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.

2. I reset the device losing all of my music.

3. I have gone to device manager and the ipod shows up as unkown device. I have stopped the device driver and rebooted.

4. I have tried to have attached to my old computer update and i receive the exact same error and usb not recognized message.

5. Other devices work fine on the usb hub, in addition i have tried the other usb hub.

All of the above measures have failed. This all started when i was having problems updating my music to the ipod, and i chose the restore function on the summary page of the itunes software, with the device attached, and recognized. Since then nothing? Initially when the device was attached after the restore option was chosen, i got need to attach to a 2. 0 usb  high speed hub, error message? It is a 2. 0 usb high speed device. I have reviewed other questions in this forum, on apples forums, all with the same results, nothing.

Dvd Device Driver Blocked - Unable To Use Device Code 48

I get a code 48 message. I have an intel d945psn board that has run w2000 on a eide hard drive. I upgraded to windows 7 with a new sata hard drive clean install, but transferred files with pc mover. Now my dvd burner(s) don't work citing the infamous code 48 and saying that the software for this device has been blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with windows.

Aren't cd/dvd device drivers pretty standard, and included with the bios?  How do i deal with that problem. I have tried to update drivers through "driver access", but the problem persists. The device doesn't even show up in windows explorer or my computer, but can be seen in device manager and on the cmos menu. The same is true of my second, identical sata hard drive. It appears that some of my important system drivers have been blocked.

Usb Hub Displaying As Device In Device Manager

Pretty much all my device connected to my usb hub used to show in device manager as separate devices. However, they now only show under the name "kevin o'connor" (the name of my zune). Open the device's properties and going to the hardware tab will show all the device connected via the usb hub.

Therefore, all the devices do in fact work, it's just a little bothersome to me, and the fact that i can't safely remove anything from the hub without having to eject the entire hub. Here's a screen shot that shows what the hub shows as: http://i34. Tinypic.com/34fxmp4.png

Win 7 Hangs

I have been using windows 7 rc1 for a while now and it's been very stable until last week. I had not made any changes to software or hardware. I was watching a dvd as i normally would and the computer just froze. There was no response from the keyboard or the mouse and no error message. I rebooted and went to the event log and found no error message generated. So i tried again to finish my dvd and after a few minutes it locked again. I then rebooted and tried the built in dvd player in windows media center. It had a terrible lag so that was no option.

After that i tried another dvd software that i had installed but never used and again the computer freezes. Something else i've noticed but just been dealing with is that any audio or video that i watch or listen to will jitter every so often with some static sound. It happens in any program i use to listen to audio or watch video. Don't know if that's related but has anyone else had any similar problems with system hangs and no related error message to trace the problem?  Btw, i had to dig out my previous drive with vista installed and put that back in the computer to continue my normal pc use.

Win 7 Hangs Up

I upgraded from xp to win7, got everything running smoothly and then a week later upgraded the motherboard, processor and memory. Then the problems started. I have updated every driver known to man and all looks well in the device manager. However after a smooth boot the os hangs up sometimes 10 minutes later sometimes 1 minute after boot with no activity at all. At times i can go to the internet for a few minutes and browse at times it hangs immediately.

I am running with a selective startup with only necessary services running. Makes no difference. I can view the event log and get a " the computer browser service depends on the server service which failed to start because of the following error: the dependency service or group failed to start. " But i am not sure if that is the cause or the result. Safe mode works ok.

Win 7 Hangs After Update

I have the same problem - safe mode, no problem, clean boot won't give you any help - i have already been down this road - this seems to be an issue with the last updates from ms - you will probably also experience loss of usb ports once the device that occupies the port is disconnected.
I have experienced the same problem on two (2) identical machines (hp pavilion dv7, i7, w7 home premium, 6gb ram, 640gb hd, nvidia geforce) - the problem was so annoying, especially the usb problem, that i reinstalled the os and all the programs only to encounter the problem again.

I returned the machine and exchanged it for the same machine - and now the same problems again.
This is a ms problem - clean boot won't tell you anything - just have to wait for ms to realize the problem and issue a patch.

Update Dialog Hangs Up

Yesterday in the middle of the working day my computer restarted and i lost one program i was working on (i already re-coded again). I'm thinking it might be automatic windows update. So, after that i was trying to bring this dialog and adjust my settings to install updates manually.

However, every time i try to bring this dialog and do something, it hangs and i have to kill it using task manager. Do you know what should i do? Could it be some virus instead? I'm using ms essentials as my antivirus program. Recently i ran a manual scan and it found 3 trojan (removed). I'm not sure how did they get there in the first place. Anyway, do you know what should i do in this situation?

Print Spooler Hangs

I have 2 laptops, upgraded old one to win 7, new one came with it installed. Using several different printers, from time to time the spooler will freeze up. My only solution so far has been to open services, and stop the spooler, i then have to reboot to clear the problem. Then things work fine for a while then it hangs up again. Either laptop, any printer, direct or networked. Doesn't matter which combo i use so i can only conclude the problem lies with win 7.

Update At Shutdown Hangs Up

Os: win 7 home premium 64 bit oem installed on zt 1. 5t desktop
Service pack level:  do not know. Machine is 2 weeks old and have seen 3-5 successful updates at shutdown time.

Few weeks ago bought a quad-core zt machine that came with win 7 home premium 64 bit os and a 1. 5t hd. Have been very happy with the unit, and have seen some 3 or 4 updates at shutdown with the usual banner "please do not power off or unplug your computer; installing update 1 of x. "  So, would happily head to bed and could hear the unit shut down in five minutes or so.

Not so last evening (fri, feb 26). Saw the update screen at 11 pm, and still there as of 10 am this morning. Yes, can see some sporadic hard disk activity, and the spinning cursor.

Any idea what may be happening, and more importantly how can i break out of the update, bring to a place where i can continue my work?

Btw, have two other win 7 systems that did not have the update last evening: a netbook running home premium 32bit, and a dell desktop running win 7 ultimate. All three are on a home win 7 network.

Agp440 Hangs During Boot

I recently rebuilt my pc and installed windows 7. Things seemed to be working ok with my old nvidia graphics card but it was only 128mb and i wanted to upgrade. I replaced it with an ati radeon 1gb agp card and now it hangs when booting agp440.sys. It'll sit there for about 25 minutes and then complete booting. Is there anyway of disabling this file from booting? Seems it was a big issue for xp and people could disable it in services, but its not listed in windows 7. Win 7 Hangs Randomly

Finally got a clean custom install of win 7 ultimate to a formatted partition h: on drive 0. Dual boot with working windows vista on the c: drive. Windows 7 boots and occasionally works for a period of time, accesses the internet fine, allows me to install a program, sometimes read email, but randomly freezes with a strange screen display, vertical lines over the existing display.

Eventually the screen becomes completely blurred with odd patterns and remains that way until i reboot. There is no single program that fails consistently. Word processor, and ie fail at different times. Noticed several times it occurred when entering data like password etc. , But at times it fails with a mouse cursor movement. When i boot to windows vista, thankfully it works flawlessly without failures so i can actually accomplish my work. Hoping for some help with this the win7 freeze problem.

Where Did Folder List Go?

I just received my new windows 7 computer in early april. I want to organize my files in folders and create new folders that make sense for the things i do and ways i use my computer. I went to windows explorer and there was nothing like that in there. I found the "where did the folder list go?"  Area in the help files. I tried to follow the instructions, but i do not get results like those pictured in the help file. I was able to get a navigation pane, but that does not help me much if it does not let me navigate through my "local disk (c:)".

The picture in the help file shows that it would do that. I want a folder tree so i can see what folders are already there, and make new folders in places that make sense!  I do not like to put stuff on my desktop wall paper. I only want important applications i use regularly there and i do not like clustering it up with files and folders. There is also other junk in the navigation pane like a "downloads" folder that does nothing to show me where it is located. I cannot even e-mail a file because i cannot find it, since i do not have a folder list. I can work from there if it will just show me where it is on the tree!
